Born in El Paso, Texas in 1956 and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio, singer-harmonica player Kat Baloun discovered her passion for blues music as a teenager. The passion grew again in the early 1990s, first in San Francisco and then from 1994 onwards in Berlin, where Baloun made her permanent home. Touring adventures across Europe finally brought her to Finland in 2010, when she found common ground with the Tomi Leino Trio. Two years later, the joint album "She's Got It" was released. Since then, Kat has returned to the country at regular intervals (most recently in July 2024), always accompanied by at least part of the same line-up.

One of the lady's recent visits was in the summer of 2023, when the performances were also recorded with a view to future publication. That time, only the perpetual motion bassist Jaska Prepula from Leino's trusted band made it. Along with him, guitarist Jonne Kulluvaara and drummer Juppo Paavola are responsible for the gig album recorded at Lossiranta in Angelniemi, Haliko, Salo. The recording in January 2024 was one of the last assignments of the late respected kapula artist that was immortalized until publication.

Baloun, who has a great sound both as a soloist and as a drummer, serves up a strong round of blues, rhythm'n'blues and soul blues on the CD. The set, which starts with his own brisk Jimmy Reed-style Can I Call You Honey shuffle, whips up a suitably unsophisticated flight, including Ruth Brown's jump-rumba 5-10-15 Hours , LaVern Baker's harsh gospel-driven Saved , Howlin' Wolf's How Many More Years and Freddy King's Sittin' On The Boat Dock . More regular members of the standard club appear in the form of Little Walter's Can't Hold Out Much Longer and Buddy Guy and Junior Wells' dance groove Snatch It Back And Hold It.

A slightly more recent era is symbolized by the swamp pop-tinged ballad Ain't No Hurry To Go Home, written by the Swede Allen Finney and previously covered by Sven Zetterberg, and, believe me, Beast Of Burden from The Rolling Stones' "Some Girls" album , which can also be tamed as a soulful stage interpretation in an exemplary way to its rooted blues stable. ~Pete Hoppula

THE MUSIC:
A self-described “preservation band,” Macon Music Revue celebrates the artists and songs associated with its namesake city. The five-piece group mines the catalogs of hometown heroes Little Richard and Otis Redding while also exploring the output of Capricorn Records. Between 1969 and 1979, the venerable Macon label and studio produced nine platinum and 17 gold albums by artists including The Allman Brothers Band, The Marshall Tucker Band, Charlie Daniels Band, Wet Willie, Sea Level, Swamp Dogg, Elvin Bishop and more. The Revue also puts its spin on cuts by James Brown, whose career kickstarted in Macon, as well as Atlanta Rhythm Section, whose lead singer—the late Ronnie Hammond—was a native Maconite, and R.E.M., whose drummer Bill Berry and bassist Mike Mills became best pals and early bandmates while attending Northeast High School. With more than 140 songs and counting, Macon Music Revue digs deep into Macon's significant musical inheritance.

THE BAND:
The members of Macon Music Revue all grew up inspired by their city's soul and Southern Rock roots. The band's own mixed musical bloodline combines the powerful gospel and music theatre-honed vocals of Charles Davis, the exceptional blues/rock guitar and slide work of guitarist Dustin McCook, and the organ and piano of Ethan Hamlin, a classically trained player whose style draws from the influence of Macon keyboard legends Gregg Allman and Chuck Leavell. The Revue’s locked-in rhythm section—drummer Caleb Melvin and bassist Evan Bentzel—embodies the laid-back groove that is a signature of the Macon sound and spirit.

He formed a trio and in 2025 they competed at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, reaching the semifinals.

Now he presents a new album where he made up his mind and to record it with a full band formed by himself on guitar, vocals and harmonica in one song, Kevin Fletcher in harmonica, George Wolf in bass and vocals, Cameron Palmer in drums and the collaboration of Victoria Hines in backing vocals on a song.

The recording gathers seven songs framed in roots blues with touches of North Mississippi Hill country blues, where Jon Hines develops his peculiar guitar style that could be defined as swampy, rough and raspy, along with a disturbing and sometimes haunted voice that serves him to honestly introduces his songs that mainly show the concerns of a sincere musician gifted with good doses of credibility who, If he persists in the attempt, he can become on the next future an outstanding performer of a tough bare and raw blues, but that will directly and deeply go into listener’s hearts.

The Rusties Blues Band is a four musician group from Gerona in the north east of Spain which started to play in 2013. In 2015 they released a double album, the first cd with their own compositions and the second one with versions of classic blues songs. This second cd led them to produce a show entitled “Traveling along the Blues Roads” where they brought the history of blues to varied general audiences with small documentaries and the band live music.

Now they release a second album, that becomes a tribute to the legendary bluesman Robert Johnson, and they do it on a simple humble way with an impressive respect for this incredible artist but, at the same time, with good doses of quality, performing technique and honesty. Of the twenty-nine songs Robert Johnson recorded during his life, The Rusties Blues Band has chosen eleven that represent the legacy of this key figure in the blues world who had a deep influence not only in blues music but also in rock and popular music.

The band leader Miquel Grifell is on guitar, Resonator, cigar box, harmonica and vocals, Manel Gaspar is on piano and Hammond, Miquel Pascal is on electric bass and double bass and finally Angel Abad controls drums and washboard. /La Hora Del Blues

10. Struggle To Believe (6:16)

Great artists take the pulse of their times and Walter Trout holds a mirror up to society’s anger and angst on "Sign Of The Times". In his half-century as a street-level social observer and scaldingly honest songwriter, blues-rock’s resilient icon Walter Trout has never told his fans what to think, how to feel, or where to stand politically. But in an era when his home nation – and the wider world – is ripping at the seams over the battlelines of modern life, the iconic US bluesman’s hard-rocking new album, "Sign Of The Times", is a primal scream and pressure valve for all of us.

The album explodes to life with the first single and opening song, "Artificial" - a scornful, satirical, harmonica-spiced rebuke of the fake world we risk creating. It feels like the amps have barely cooled from 2024’s "Broken", which debuted on Billboard at #1. But the era-chronicling songs from "Sign Of The Times" wouldn’t wait, these urgent riffs flying off the guitarist’s fingers, assisted once again by Marie, Walter’s wife, manager and co-writer. Even by Trout’s standards, "Sign Of The Times" is a record that puts you through the emotional wringer. But as long as there’s poignant and relevant music, we have a fighting chance. /Bluestown Music

11. Passion Of The Night (3:12)
12. Dimes In The Jar (4:59)
13. Elena (2:54)

Three decades into his career, Brian Setzer's sound is so well-established that his only trump card lies in formal aesthetic experiments, and he pulls out a doozy with 2009's Songs from Lonely Avenue. Far from being a Doc Pomus tribute album, Songs from Lonely Avenue is a "soundtrack to an unwritten film," an album equally inspired by '50s film noirs, R&B, and rock & roll, a conceptual stroll through smoky clubs and dimly lit back alleys.

There are no surprising sounds here - Setzer hauls out his jump blues and slow-crawling ballads - but that doesn't mean this is tired: Setzer is reinvigorated by his concept, turning in his first collection of all-original material in his entire career. Although the songs are essentially vehicles for the concept, the entirety of Songs from Lonely Avenue shows Setzer to be a master of mood, maybe not digging too far underneath the surface, but creating a record that is an engaging slice of noir fantasia. /Stephen Thomas Erlewine, AllMusic

The Rusties Blues Band is a band from Girona that has been on the Spanish blues scene for years. They have released several albums and their enthusiasm for bringing the blues to all corners of Spain is commendable. On their latest album, they've taken a leap of faith. Instead of presenting a standard tracklist, they've decided to pay tribute to the three "Kings" (Albert King, B.B. King, and Freddie King), playing both covers and originals that these three guitar kings once recorded.

The songs are well known to all fans, just mention titles like “I’m Tore Down”, “Born Under A Sign” or “The Thrill Is Gone”, three songs written by one of the Kings. But there are also versions of other songs not written by them but that they also recorded such as “Caledonia” by Louis Jordan, “Everyday I Have The Blues” by Memphis Slim or “Call It Stormy Monday” by T-Bone Walker to name six of the twelve songs they perform on this album, and which serve to give the fans an idea of what they are going to find on this album.

An album made with humility and simplicity, which simply aims to be a tribute from true fans to these three artists who have undoubtedly left a profound mark on each and every blues lover. /La Hora Del Blues

Step into the soul of rock & roll with “I’m Just Johnnie” - a wonderful collection of tracks from Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Johnnie Johnson. This album captures everything we love about Johnnie: the foot-stomping energy of “Let the Good Times Roll,” the storytelling swing of “Three Handed Woman,” and the piano magic of “Blues in G.”

From the heartfelt groove of “Stagger Lee” to the autobiographical charm of the title track, this album is a front-row seat to one of the elder statesmen of the blues and founding fathers of rock and roll. Includes special studio interviews with Pat St. John, Bonnie Raitt, Gene Ackmann, and Johnnie himself - a rare and intimate look behind the music.

Johnnie Johnson was more than a legendary pianist - he was the rhythmic soul behind the birth of rock & roll. Best known for his groundbreaking work with Chuck Berry, Johnnie helped craft classics like “Maybellene,” “Roll Over Beethoven,” and the iconic “Johnny B. Goode.” A Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee, he also played alongside Eric Clapton, The Rolling Stones, The Kentucky Headhunters, Bob Weir, Bo Diddley, Buddy Guy, and many more.

But beyond the spotlight, Johnnie was a humble, joyful spirit who loved fishing, Cardinals baseball, and spending time with friends and family. His unmistakable boogie-woogie groove, warm smile, and deep St. Louis roots left an unforgettable mark on every stage he played. Whether behind a piano or casting a line at a quiet lake, Johnnie lived with heart. His music and legacy continue to inspire generations.

Personnel: Johnnie Johnson (piano, vocals); Max Baker (guitar); Dickie Steltenpohl (bass); Paul Willett (Hammond B3 organ); Pat Liston (backing vocals); Henry Lawrence (vocals); Kenny Rice (drums); Gus Thornton (bass, vocals).

Every decade has its own retro craze spearheaded by a true believer who brings classic sounds and style back into vogue. Brian Setzer performed this trick not just once but twice, first as the leader of the Stray Cats, the trio that brought rockabilly back into the charts during the '80s, then he helped popularize the swing revival of the '90s with the Brian Setzer Orchestra. Both of these sounds were grounded in the '50s - that's when rockabilly was born but also the heyday of the kind of jump blues Setzer loved, music by Louis Prima and Big Joe Turner - and while the Stray Cats were purists of sorts, indebted to the big beat of Eddie Cochran and Gene Vincent, as a solo act Setzer wound up fusing these aesthetics together, playing rockabilly guitar to a swinging beat.

With this jumping sound, he cultivated a loyal following - consisting of not a few latter-day disciples - that stretched well into the new millennium, developing the long-running, successful career that many of his idols never had. /Stephen Thomas Erlewine, AllMusic

Down The Hatch, the new album from four-time Grammy winner, producer/drummer/songwriter Tom Hambridge showcases the joy Tom receives from creating music - especially for his own releases. The 12 original track-album offers a mix of songs that represent the blues sounds of the past, present and future. Some of the tunes were originally written for others by him, like "Willie Dixon's Gone", "You Gotta Go Through St. Louis", "Every Time I Sing The Blues", and are included as he wanted to do his version - the way he heard them in his head while writing them.

There are also a handful of new tunes. All the songs have a common thread - Tom. Whether he's in the studio creating for Kingfish, George Thorogood or Buddy Guy, the award-winning drummer is motoring the whole thing - in this case he's the original producer, songwriter, drummer and arranger. "Down The Hatch is basically me being me", says Tom. "I love the blues, I love rock 'n' roll, I love Willie Dixon, I love Buddy Guy - it's me, doing and feeling me".
