Leroy Carr & Scrapper Blackwell - When the Sun Goes Down 1934 - 1941

By the late summer of 1934 Leroy Carr and Scrapper Blackwell were among Vocalion's biggest sellers. Despite the Depression, they had visited the studio every year except 1933. Only Leroy Carr's death in 1935 brought their success to an end. Several factors contributed to this success. Carr's blues where urban in their performance, structure and in the warmth of his vocal style. The vast majority of his songs were blues. These often had a wild bite which resulted in an intensity, heightened by an almost unbearable poignancy on his finest sides. After Carr's death, it was primarily Bumble Bee Slim and Bill Gaither who filled the huge void in the world of the pre-war blues. Both singers were among the finest and most popular of the 1930s. The were superb lyricists who produced enduring examples of the genre. As Memphis Minnie said "they carried the good work on". Leroy Carr is a seminal figure in the development of the blues and it is entirely fitting to let him have the last word in the last song he recorded: "Just remember me baby, when I'm six feet of cold, cold ground. Always think of me mama, just say there's a good man gone down".

Leroy Carr & Scrapper Blackwell - How Long Has That Evening Train Been Gone 1928-1934

Over the course of its four discs and 95 songs, this box set tells you pretty much all you could wish to know about pianist Leroy Carr and guitarist Scrapper Blackwell. They did plenty of solo work during this period, but between 1928 and 1934 they were also one of the most successful blues duos in America. Though this comprehensive collection is described as “early recordings,” there's not much more to the pair's story, since Carr died in 1935, driving a mournful Blackwell into decades of retirement. From the classic “How Long, How Long Blues” to later sides like the sorrowful “Blues Before Sunrise,” Blackwell's jazz-schooled guitar licks and Carr's urban piano style combined for a more sophisticated sound that foreshadowed blues's eventual move from the country to the city. -- Allmusic.

Leroy Carr - Sloppy Drunk

Leroy Carr was one of the most famous artists in the history of early blues (1928-1935). Together with his longtime musical partner and guitar player Scrapper Blackwell, they took their music to the top of the race music charts. They managed to build an impressive body of work with a simple concept, catchy blues based figures by Carr's keys and Blackwell's chordal accom- paniment. Many of the songs followed the same replicated structure, only deviating in terms of lyrical imagery and vocal delivery. Carr's voice was a perfect match for the blues, high-pitched and haunted with a fatalistic resolve that mirrored the sorrowful content of the songs. Meanwhile Blackwell's strumming worked mesmerically at caulking all the rhythmic nooks and crannies. Together the two blend in a tightly crafted tandem that still retained a rough and tumble coarseness. Leroy Carr sang city blues about his life, friends, acquaintances, and people he heard about secondhand and third-party. A prolific writer too, Carr scribed most of these tunes, which he sings in a sincere whisky-drenched delivery (as the title implies). These songs provide an intimate peep into black life in the late 1920s/early 1930s. This remarkable 2 disc set moves through the duo's first session to their last. - All-About-Jazz/Allmusic.

This is a CD designed to emphasise the guitar playing of Scrapper Blackwell, a blues guitarist of the late 1920s and 1930s. It also showcases the piano playing of Blackwell's long-time partner, Leroy Carr. In fact, as good as Blackwell definitely is, I found that it is the piano playing of Carr that holds much of the CD together. His playing underscores Blackwell's guitar by providing a very solid bass rhythm that provides the fundamental basis for the toe-tapping style behind many of the tracks. A prime example of this is the fantastic "Barrelhouse Woman No. 2." The themes found on the CD are the normal classic blues themes, although they are definitely flavoured by a northern urban environment, as is most glaringly demonstrated by "Down South Blues," a litany of yearning for the south as seen by a transplanted southerner(Blackwell played out of Indianapolis). Another theme is alcohol. "Whiskey Man Blues" is hilarious, but at the same time the celebration of unrepentant over-consumption has gloomier overtones. Finally, for just sitting back and listening to some excellent guitar picking, Blackwell is a treat, and definitely worth the price of admission. ~Acnoth
