Crazy Legs is Jeff Beck's tribute to the player who inspired him to pick up the guitar, Cliff Gallup of Gene Vincent and the Blue Caps. The fact that this collection of rockabilly tunes is also one of the liveliest albums of Beck's long career also underscores the fact that the brilliant guitarist is one of rock's greatest underachievers. Apparently unable to sustain working relationships with players as strong as those in his early groups, Beck has become a top-dollar guitarist for hire who has traded sustained musicality for isolated moments of virtuosity. But slumming with the Big Town Playboys, a respected British revival group, Beck is not just flashy window dressing but the lightning rod in a red-hot combo.

Beck has said that his biggest challenge in mastering rockabilly, a style that calls for the guitarist to mix single-note runs with snappy clusters of chords, was learning to play without the volume and distortion that has informed his playing since his mid-'60s tenure with the Yardbirds. That's what gives Crazy Legs its swing, for instead of dominating the music with sheer sonic muscle, Beck achieves the same end by bouncing his encyclopedic bag of riffs off a rippling rhythm section of drums and stand-up bass. Throughout these 18 well-chosen selections, Beck is equally apt to whip out a propulsive rhythm ("Lotta Lovin'"), a string of arpeggios ("Blues Stay Away From Me") or a wildly scrambled solo ("Cruisin'"). If guitarists earned degrees, Crazy Legs would be Beck's thesis toward a doctorate in rockabilly.

Crazy Legs is unlikely to be more than just another odd patch in Beck's crazy-quilt career. Rockabilly, after all, has been a retro novelty ever since the early Beatles covered tunes by Carl Perkins. The Playboys are certainly less self-conscious than the Stray Cats, who enjoyed 15 minutes of fame in the 1980s, though you can bet your ducktail that the Playboys wouldn't be on a major label without Beck on guitar. In that regard, Crazy Legs is oddly akin to Eric Clapton's Unplugged, for in both cases, celebrated guitar gods respectfully re-create the music that had first stirred their passions. Beck doesn't add anything new to the rockabilly vocabulary, but he plays this music as well as it's ever been played. Billy Lee Riley, one of the Sun Records legends of the ’50s, has fashioned a disc which triumphantly recalls the distinctive sounds of two other influential labels from that era, Vee-Jay and Excello. In recent years Riley has been inaccurately labeled a rockabilly, yet a closer look at his work reveals more of a kinship with R&B and blues than country music. His best known Sun recordings, “Red Hot” and “Flying Saucers Rock ’n’ Roll,” were hot tongue-in-cheek ravers in the Little Richard fashion. Such later regional successes as “I’ve Got a Thing About You Baby” and his cover of “In the Midnight Hour” were also drawn from the realm of blues and soul. Unlike most of his contemporaries (Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Charlie Rich, etc.) who eventually gravitated towards country music, whenever Riley had an artistic statement to make he has always turned to the blues.

The Arkansas-born Riley’s third all-blues album, Shade Tree Blues, outstrips his Grammy-nominated Hot Damn with respect to production sense and easy groove. Taking his fondness for the works of Jimmy Reed, Slim Harpo, Lazy Lester, et al., into the Sun Studios in Memphis, Riley does a remarkable job achieving the seductive swing and intimacy of their finest sides while asserting his own identity as a bluesman. Riley’s harmonica playing may seem more sophisticated than either Reed’s or Harpo’s, but it captures much of the same expressive feel. The studio chemistry between Riley and engineer/guitar ace James Lott is undeniably strong. Whether they trade evocative lead spots or carom swooning slide fills around tart electric solos, the effect is eloquent yet loose and appealing.

Vocally, Riley sounds great from the get-go. The a cappella intro on “Gonna Bring It On Home To You” is chillingly effective, and his understated vibrato effectively implies all manner of deep emotion. Slow numbers such as “Without You Baby” and “Dark Clouds Rollin’” benefit greatly from his use of subtle dramatic irony and rueful humor. The mid-tempo shuffles “I Don’t Know,” “I Hear You Knockin’,” “Wild Cat Tamer” and “Little Piece at a Time” shudder with playful tension and release. He imbues Big Bill Broonzy’s “Gonna Worry You Off My Mind” and Junior Parker’s “What Goes On in the Dark” with palpable sensuality and sly suspicion, ratcheting simple tales of domestic discord into moving paeans of guilt and paranoia. Shade Tree Blues is one of Riley’s most inspired efforts and should please both his rock ’n’ roll fans and the more discerning blues crowd. /Ken Burke

Cuby + Blizzards – also known as Cuby & the Blizzards were a Dutch blues group, founded in 1964 by vocalist Harry Muskee, and guitarist Eelco Gelling. During the 1960s, the band's mixture of sound, drawing upon a variety of genres which included blues and rock and roll, gave them a pioneering sound which was completely different from any other Dutch band in the same time period, using the name Peter & the Blizzards. The spelling of the name varies, with 'Cuby' also written as 'QB' and the ampersand (&) also written as 'and' or '+' and the 'and' sometimes left out. The spelling 'Cuby + Blizzards' was used on the first albums.

The band's first single, a blues-based track bearing similarities to The Pretty Things output, was "Stumble and Fall" in 1965. From the start, they were a big hit in the Netherlands. In 1967 they toured with Van Morrison (after he had left Them), recorded an album, "Praise the Blues" with U.S. blues musician Eddie Boyd and scored a hit with "Window of my Eyes". That year, John Mayall stayed at their farm and the next year they regularly played with the "king of British blues" Alexis Korner, who is featured on their album Live in Düsseldorf (1968).

The line-up of the band changed regularly, but founders Harry Muskee and Eelco Gelling remained at the core of the band until 1976. Herman Brood was the pianist from early 1967 until mid-1968 (which kickstarted his career) and again in 1976. Also in 1976, Gelling left to join Golden Earring. Muskee then decided to drop the name C+B and to form the Harry Muskee Band. This band recorded one album before Muskee decided to leave the music business. In 1980 he formed the Muskee Gang with a line-up of Herman Deinum (bass guitar) and Hans la Faille (drums), who had both joined C+B in 1969, together with saxophonist Rudy van Dijk, Paul Smeenk (guitar) and Jeff Reynolds (trumpet).

In 1996 Cuby + Blizzards re-formed without Eelco Gelling, who was replaced by Erwin Java on guitar. In 2004 they went on a theatre tour to honor John Lee Hooker. C+B came to an end when Harry Muskee died of cancer on 26 September 2011.

Soul and blues have never been mutually exclusive. They’re a perfect pairing, like red wine with beef and white wine with fish. New York’s Art Halperin and his latest band, Widow Blue, blend the best of both worlds on their debut album. Who’s Going to Take Care of Lucille offers eleven songs that will please longtime fans and newcomers to the blues in equal measure. It’s already pleased critics, reaching #10 on Ben Vee’s Roadhouse’s “Best of the Blues 2018.” It presents a near-perfect balance of wallop-packing tracks with slower, more mellow selections. With his two other bands, Work of Art and the Natural Mystics, Art has toured the U.S., Europe, South America and the Caribbean. He’s been a headliner and an opening act for bands such as Santana, Jerry Garcia, Third World, Jimmy Cliff, The Police, Bo Diddley, and Chuck Berry. As a solo artist, he’s shared the stage with such icons as Eric Clapton, Bonnie Raitt, and Marty Stuart. Remember the 1983 John Sayles movie Baby It’s You? Work of Art was featured in it. Widow Blue consists of Steve “Skrilla” Riddick on lead vocals, Art “Ski” Halperin on lead guitar and backing vocals, Al Maddy on rhythm guitar and backing vocals, Ed “Ignatz” Stein on keyboards, Sue Williams on bass, and Jon Bates on drums. Special guest stars include drummers Patrick Conlon, Warren Odze, and George “M16” Mussington; vocalists Debbie Major, Sybil Scoby and Coco Michelle; and trombonist Fred Simmons. The opener/title track is the perfect homage to BB King and his “queen”, a slow burner full of classic blues sound and poignant songwriting. Sybil Scoby laments, “You won’t hear her [Lucille] crying on this dark blue day and age. All you’re gonna hear is silence now that her man has gone away.” Following that is the up-tempo “That’s What I’m Talkin’ About”, and I’m talking about its electric disco vibe. It’ll get people dancing and thinking that its running time (3:53) is far too short. Instrumental “Pow Wow Blues” slows things down a bit, featuring Patrick Conlon on evocative percussion. “Snake in the Grass” is another highlight, featuring a killer acoustic guitar intro & harp by Art Halperin. Sue Williams provides a soft, ominous bassline. After the roaring rocker “Wonderful Feeling” come the sweet love songs “When Nighttime Turns to Day” and “Back In Your Arms.” On “Nighttime,” notes fall from Debbie Major’s lips like rain on a warm summer afternoon, as they do from Halperin’s electric guitar. “Arms” may be short, but it’s a lusty acoustic ballad with old-fashioned oeuvre. Then listeners behold a “New Sun Rising” – the smoothest, most melodic tune of all. Superb harmonic vocals from Ms. Major and Coco Michelle seamlessly mesh with “Art Ski’s” keyboards in this hope-offering anthem. Closing things out are “Why Don’t You Treat Me Nice?”, “Slow Blues and a Shot of Gin” and “Broken Heart for Sale.” Number nine’s my favorite, with ragtime trombone by Fred Simmons. The other two are solid “traditional contemporary” blues rock numbers that just might be played at one’s local bar or in an upcoming roadhouse movie. Widow Blue’s debut is a stunner in several ways: high quality, variety of songs, broad audience appeal, and the musical chemistry among the various artists involved. It’s as tasty as barbecue pork at a “fusion” restaurant, showcasing the flavors of both classic and contemporary blues.

About halfway through the nine-minute "Come on in My Kitchen," the listener will realize that Pyeng Threadgill's hommage to Robert Johnson, Sweet Home, is not simply a Cassandra Wilson knock off. In fact, it should come as quite an epiphany that this recording is something very rare and special. Johnson's tome of longing is transformed, in turn, from a '40s girls' ensemble piece into a funeral dirge dominated by Threadgill's elastic voice, Kevin Louis' trumpet and the mourning piano of Dave Pier. That is followed by a trombone-trumpet-voice Monteverdi polyphonic madrigal that flows into a New Orleans gumbo gospel vamp, spearheaded by the trombone and then the full band, replete with muted trumpet. After that, the closer, "Ramblin? on my Mind," sounds almost down right pedestrian until one realizes that this is the most typical blues form on the record and that is really saying something. Pyeng Threadgill is the daughter of saxophonist Henry Threadgill, long associated with the Chicago avant-garde scene. His beautiful and creative spawn has made a record of such fearless daring and crystalline invention that this may be the most effective tribute to the Phantom yet digitally applied. In these 70 minutes, Miss Threadgill and her able band deconstruct and reconstruct the heart of the Johnson canon. Instant kudos to her for covering "Phonograph Blues;" even with its shaky gender center, the song remains one of the greatest double entendres committed to record. "Dead Shrimp" contains what one would thinks is a perfect Latin vamp, but sounds more other-worldly with each listen.

The Silvertones: Texas Blues is a band that been a staple in the North Texas Music scene for over 27 years. Founded in 1993 by Brian Wicker and Kyle Copeland. The original line-up included Joe Williams (bass), Brent Childers (drums) and Bill Jones (vocals). Their inaugural gig was at The Filling Station in Terrell, Texas. Like many bands, The Silvertones have had several line-up changes throughout the years. One of the most influential Silvertones members was Walter Delesandri on lead guitar. Sadly, Walt passed away in 2003 from a massive heart attack and he is still greatly missed.

Each member that has moved through the band brought their own style, soul & contributed their talents to The Silvertones reputation as a “killer” live blues band, in addition to being a four-time winner of the Dallas Observer Best Blues Band award. Since 2012, the band's lineup has solidified with original member and founder, Brian Wicker on bass, Randy Ball on drums, Leo De La Vega on guitar, and Rob Donavan on lead guitar. The Silvertones’ set-list, with about half being original, reflects the various influences that the band members grew up listening to. Their sound is primarily blues, with a hint of jazz, and an infusion of swing, rockabilly, and rock & roll.

Averaging 80 gigs a year, you can see The Silvertones live at Dallas and Fort Worth music festivals, clubs, restaurants, and even at Fort Worth Swing Dance Society dances. You can also book The Silvertones for private parties. The Silvertones, to date, have recorded five CDs starting with their freshman album, Cruisin, self-produced in 1999, Hot in The Hole, recorded live in July 2002 at The Hole in the Wall in Dallas, Texas. In 2005, The Silvertones signed with Deep South Productions in Austin and recorded Ride in My Cadillac in 2005, You Got Me Spinning in 2011, and Silvertone Avenue in 2014.

The Lemon Squeezin' Daddies have been rockin' it up for nearly 20 years. Shortly after being formed, the Lemon Squeezin’ Daddies won the talent contest at the Australian Blues Festival in 2000. They have since been nominated as Best New Talent for the Chain Awards and have been finalists in the Sydney Blues Society’s “Blues Performer of the Year”.

The Charles Walker Band, formerly known as the Charles Walker Blues Band, was formed by tenor saxophonist and keyboard player Charles Walker in Milwaukee, WI, in 2003. Walker had studied jazz at the University of Wisconsin at Eau Claire, leading to an extensive career as a jazz saxophonist. Prior to forming the Charles Walker Band, he was a member of Muddy Blue, which released the album Low Down Dirty Blues.

Lead singer Shanna Jackson, a native of Milwaukee, began singing at the age of five and attended the city's School of Fine Arts, after which she sang in female vocal groups. Lead guitarist Misha Siegfried (who replaced Emre Alp) is from St. Paul, MN, but moved to Milwaukee in 2002. His prior affiliations include Fire on Your Sleeve, the Genie Halliday Revue Band, the Mixx, Reverend Raven and the Chain Smoking Alter Boys, Blues Wagon, and Mississippi Gun & Gun Smoke.

Bassist Kent Hamele of Madison, WI, had been playing for over 30 years before joining the Charles Walker Band. Drummer Joey B. Banks (who replaced Nic Fugate) began playing the drums at the age of six and studied at the Musicians Institute of Technology in Los Angeles. He joined James Earl Tate and the Million-Dollar Blues Band in 1991. He also has backed a number of different performers including, in 1996, the Spinners and the Four Tops.

The Charles Walker Band released Keep Takin and Hotel Room Blues in 2005. Live and Low Down followed in 2007. The World and Things, initially issued in 2007 and re-released on Lucky 13/BC Records on January 15, 2008, was the group's first to be billed to the Charles Walker Band. /Biography by William Ruhlmann, Allmusic

Two-time Grammy winner, Blues Hall of Famer and 16-time Blues Music Award winner, Bobby Rush does it again with his new album All My Love For You. It’s a delight, funny, and sometimes raunchy, with well-crafted songs and stellar musicianship. Rush is one of the greats, a legendary bluesman, and All My Love For You is one of his best. At age 89, that is no small accomplishment. But for Rush, who seems to have an endless supply of energy, maybe it is.

An album of ten original tunes written and produced by Rush, All My Love For You is semi-autobiographical. And rich history it is. Rush has led a fascinating life from being The King of the Chitlin Circuit, performing with Elmore James and B.B. King, Howlin’ Wolf and Muddy Waters, to winning his first Grammy Award at age 83 for his album Porcupine Meat. Since then he’s only gotten better, more popular. His last album Rawer Than Raw also won a Grammy Award, followed by the re-recording of his 1971 hit Chicken Heads with Buddy Guy, Gov’t Mule and Christone ‘Kingfish’ Ingram. Not content to stop there, he wrote his critically acclaimed autobiography ‘I Ain’t Studdin’ Ya: My American Blues Story’.

Growing up in rural Louisiana, Bobby Rush (Emmett Ellis, Jr) picked cotton at age nine on his family’s farm, living in a home with no electricity or indoor plumbing. Rush uses that history as fodder for fascinating stories in the form of well crafted, funky, bluesy songs. In each one, you feel his joy and humor, his soulfulness in his singing, harmonica and guitar. Bobby Rush is an inspiration. And he’s backed by a kickass band who really get him and his in-the-pocket groove. They are Dexter Allen (guitar, bass) and Joey Robinson (keyboard, drums.)

Kicking off the record is the catchy standout “I’m Free,” a funky autobiographical tale about Rush picking cotton in the fields. It’s his ode to getting out of that life at such a young age and running his own show with no one telling him what to do. With backing singers, horn section, and compelling piano and guitar, this is one of many on the album where the rhythm section is so deep in the pocket that you can hear the intuitive sparks fly between the band members. Rush’s expert harmonica rides the groove. “I’m free, I’m free, look at me,” he sings. “I got the shackles off my feet, chains off my mind.” It’s a testament to his life, his history and resilience.

Humor is part of Bobby Rush’s All My Love For You, complete with laugh-out-loud lyrics. He communicates feel-good humor with his vocals, like on “TV Mama”, another standout tune about the woman he loves “the one with the big wide screen.” His harp playing is as good as ever, as if Rush lives and breathes that instrument. “I’m the One,” another standout, is all Bobby Rush and how he was born to sing the blues. But not like B.B. King, Guitar Slim or Muddy Waters. “I’m the one who put the funk in the blues,” he sings. Celebrating his history, including what he learned from B.B. King and Muddy Waters after arriving in Chicago in 1952, this song has hit all over it.

Rush gets serious on “You’re Gonna Need A Man Like Me” a bluesy number about love lost. Rush delivers a soulful song about his wish that the woman who left him would return. Billy Lee Riley was a rockabilly singer and multi-instrumentalist. An alumnus of Sun Records, he was one of the most crazed, unabashed rockers that label had to offer - in the company of Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, and Sonny Burgess, that's saying a lot. Proficient at harmonica, guitar, bass, and drums, Riley contributed as a sideman to many a classic Sun session, and his combo, the Little Green Men (most notably guitarist Roland Janes and drummer J.M. Van Eaton), in time became the Sun house band. Riley recorded for a number of labels in a variety of styles, especially effective with blues. Though never commercially successful, Riley's Sun recordings of "Flying Saucer Rock 'n' Roll" and "Red Hot" (both covered in wooden renditions by Robert Gordon) remain landmarks of the genre. In 2017, the boogie-woogie pianist Mitch Woods released a swinging album of (mostly) duets with some of his pals and favorite blues-style players. Friends Along the Way featured the Bay Area musician playing and singing with such notables as Van Morrison, Taj Mahal, and John Lee Hooker. The 16-track record featured classics by Ma Rainey, Huddie (Lead Belly) Ledbetter, and Professor Longhair, as well as originals by Woods and his contemporaries, including Charlie Musselwhite and Ruthie Foster. Critics praised it then, but the record company that released it focused on other projects and did not promote the jam-packed 68-minute record.

Woods decided to repurchase the master tapes and release the music as a double disc with five additional tracks by artists who already appear previously (Cyril Neville, Kenny Neal, John Hammond, Maria Muldaur, and Joe Louis Walker). The five new tracks are fine, but the original 16 cuts make this Deluxe Edition worth hearing. Bringing these songs back into print is worthwhile in and of itself. This music has been living in purgatory for too long and deserves a broader audience.

Impeccably produced by Sam Charters for the swedish company Sonet, this typical Chicago Blues album in which shine Joe's subtle guitar and his warm voice. Some remarkable titles are born of these sessions : "Baby please", the instrumental "Just a minute", "Wishy washy woman", "Sweet kisses" (where he is brilliant on guitar), "Lookin' for you". First-rate sidemen are present : Bob Riedy, Sylvester Boines, Alvino Bennett, Charles Beecham and Walter Hambrick. The disc - more traditional than "Blues with a touch of soul" - is a major achievement of this often underestimated artist. In parallel to his career as a leader, Joe continues to appear alongside Willie Dixon ("Peace"), Detroit Junior ("Chicago urban blues") or Willie Mabon ("Willie Mabon is back funky").

Omar Kent Dykes finally returns with What's Buggin' You?, his first since 2017 when he contracted a muscle disease in both arms that prevented him from playing guitar. In May, he was able to go back to the studio to record 10 original songs and one cover, "Crackin' Up" by Bo Diddley (coincidentally both from McComb, Mississippi-maybe it's the water). Somewhat recovered, Omar was able to play guitar on four tracks and harp on another but he still sings up a storm. The ever-evolving Howlers this time around are the stellar Eve Monsees on lead guitar, longtime Howler Jason Crisp on bass, Mike Buck (LeRoi Brothers, Fabulous Thunderbirds) on drums, and engineer Nico Leophonte from Alnico Recording Studio on percussion. Omar calls this his "man and beast" record because of the titles of the songs. "Lover Man" was on Blues Bag (1991), but Omar plays it this time as a shuffle. "Gator Man" is a swampy new song that features Greg Martin from the Kentucky Headhunters on guitar.

First formed in 1984, bass player Ian Jennings is the sole surviving founder member of The Big Town Playboys but those that play in the band look on it rather like a private club; people come in, stay for a bit, go and come back again. This obviously makes for an interesting line-up at any gig, whether in the UK or abroad. Their songs of choice are derived from the black America of the 1950s. Rockabilly and swing music were influences, but nobody was experimenting with west coast rhythm and blues; Amos Milburn, Willie Littlefield, Willie Egans – and that's where the Big Town Playboys found their niche.

Stylistically it’s a more saxophone and piano based feel with bigger line-ups and it is more dance oriented than Chicago blues. The contagious dance grooves, the boogie piano, the sax riffs, the overdriven guitar solos and the wailing blues of the vocalists are all part of the reason for this band’s obsession with the music known as Rhythm and Blues. By the end of the 1990s the band had visited the USA three times, including a residency at Mick Fleetwood's club in Los Angeles, a tour of the West coast, a TV show and a trip to New York.

Cuby + Blizzards – also known as Cuby & the Blizzards were a Dutch blues group, founded in 1964 by vocalist Harry Muskee, and guitarist Eelco Gelling. During the 1960s, the band's mixture of sound, drawing upon a variety of genres which included blues and rock and roll, gave them a pioneering sound which was completely different from any other Dutch band in the same time period, using the name Peter & the Blizzards. The spelling of the name varies, with 'Cuby' also written as 'QB' and the ampersand (&) also written as 'and' or '+' and the 'and' sometimes left out. The spelling 'Cuby + Blizzards' was used on the first albums.

The band's first single, a blues-based track bearing similarities to The Pretty Things output, was "Stumble and Fall" in 1965. From the start, they were a big hit in the Netherlands. In 1967 they toured with Van Morrison (after he had left Them), recorded an album, "Praise the Blues" with U.S. blues musician Eddie Boyd and scored a hit with "Window of my Eyes". That year, John Mayall stayed at their farm and the next year they regularly played with the "king of British blues" Alexis Korner, who is featured on their album Live in Düsseldorf (1968).

The line-up of the band changed regularly, but founders Harry Muskee and Eelco Gelling remained at the core of the band until 1976. Herman Brood was the pianist from early 1967 until mid-1968 (which kickstarted his career) and again in 1976. Also in 1976, Gelling left to join Golden Earring. Muskee then decided to drop the name C+B and to form the Harry Muskee Band. This band recorded one album before Muskee decided to leave the music business. In 1980 he formed the Muskee Gang with a line-up of Herman Deinum (bass guitar) and Hans la Faille (drums), who had both joined C+B in 1969, together with saxophonist Rudy van Dijk, Paul Smeenk (guitar) and Jeff Reynolds (trumpet).

In 1996 Cuby + Blizzards re-formed without Eelco Gelling, who was replaced by Erwin Java on guitar. In 2004 they went on a theatre tour to honor John Lee Hooker. C+B came to an end when Harry Muskee died of cancer on 26 September 2011.

Pittsburgh-based blues/rock/R&B outfit Billy The Kid & The Regulators display big-league taste and talent on their new release Nice Ain’t Got Me Nothin’. It’s an outstanding set of blues music that touches on a variety of styles and feels from vintage to contemporary and gets lowdown with them all. Frontman Billy Evanochko is a mesmerizing presence on vocals and guitar at center stage and exudes the power and grit of which legends are made. Nice Ain’t Got Me Nothin’ punches hard but also shows the kind of skills that bring nuance and expression to the forefront. Billy clearly knows where he wants to go and wastes nary a note in the process of getting there.

Billy The Kid & The Regulators have been blasting their blues from the group’s Pennsylvania home since 2000. They’ve become known as one of the mightiest acts in their region and have also rocked innumerable clubs, concerts, and festivals around the country. Billy’s personal blend of blues and R&B has won him and his band a large, loyal following, critical praise, and a slew of awards. The band took Third Place at the International Blues Challenge in 2014, First Place from the Blues Society of Western Pennsylvania in 2013, and First Place from the West Virginia Blues Society in 2007. They were also a Top Five Finalist at the IBC in 2013 in the Best Self-Produced CD category. BTK and his current lineup of bassist John Bartholomay, keyboardist Owen Dougan-Bacha, and drummer Ben Davis absolutely know how to turn heads around and this new record vibes like it’s going to break big.

Evanochko kicks things off with his title cut “Nice Ain’t Got Me Nothin’.” It’s a fully-energized blast of modern-day blues that’s well-written and muscular. It’s a classic heartbreak song with a crisp, funky pocket and outstanding performances at all positions. Billy is an excellent singer and guitarist with a strong identity and a vocal tone that cuts through the band. The whole group slays this one, especially the rhythm section. Drummer Ben Davis is the man and puts the entire arrangement in gear. “Sweet Honey Child” downshifts into a more hip-shaking feel and features Billy ripping on slide guitar. Keyboardist Owen Dougan-Bacha is a large presence here and his piano licks are tight and rhythmic. Billy’s bold vocals keep things focused on the microphone and come off as intuitive and real.

One of the best cuts on Nice Ain’t Got Me Nothin’ is the hardcore slow blues “Bullshit Barbie.” It’s all about trouble and deception in the game of love and Billy hits it with his best back-alley style. His guitar solo is volcanic from the jump, letting his blues fall down like rain. Lyrically, he holds nothing back, so don’t play this one at the office. The hard funk of “Bang Bang Baby” is also an album highlight. The bass line drives the beat right through the floor and Billy throws down everything he’s got on top of it. It’s a dance-til-you-can’t situation that will put any size crowd in motion with its live-off-the-floor sound. Other can’t-miss cuts include “Shake That Thang” and “Nasty Habits.”

Nice Ain’t Got Me Nothing comes off like a turning-point release that will exponentially raise Billy The Kid & The Regulators’ profile. The album is full-on hot sauce from end to end and shows Billy Evanochko to be an artist a lot more people need to experience. David Maxwell has amassed an enormous resume throughout the years playing piano with some of the greatest and well- known musicians in the blues. David plays many styles of blues, jazz and improvised music, but he is best known for his soulful virtuosity and unmatched ability to reach the heart of post-war Chicago Blues. Through his work, he has gained the respect of artists, critics and fans and has established a reputation as one of the finest blues pianists alive. In the last decade , David has received over a half dozen WC Handy and Grammy nominations and a Grammy Award for recorded work, as well as Handy nominations for instrumental performance He has played with many of the greats including tours with Freddie King, Bonnie Raitt, James Cotton, Otis Rush, Buddy Guy, Hubert Sumlin, Jimmy Rodgers, Charley Musselwhite, Johnny Adams and Ronnie Earl; and gigs with Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Levon Helm, Jimmy Witherspoon, Lowell Fulsom, Junior Wells and many others. He has been involved in well over fifty recording sessions and can be found playing keys on many blues albums that have been released over the last 25 years. When the oldest continuously running blues society in the world says you're the "real deal", that has to mean something. Blue Edge collects 25 remastered and remixed versions of Terraplane tracks from 2004-2006 that appeared on the albums Do The Don't and Secret Life as well as in scores for theatrical works. Legendary iconic guitarist Hubert Sumlin is featured on a number of songs and vocalists include Tracie Morris, Eric Mingus, and Dean Bowman.

Elliott Sharp's Terraplane is back to follow up their fantastic Blues for Next, switching from the now defunct Knitting Factory to Gaff Music. While Blues for Next had them really expanding on the sound offered up on Terraplane, their fairly straight blues debut, Do the Don't has them distilling all the elements that made Blues for Next such a success into a sharply focused (pun intended) future blues that actually has stronger ties to the raw eclectic blues of the '50s and '60s than just about any other blues album recorded in the last 20 years. While the last album had one disc devoted to the guest artists and one disc more devoted to expanding the blues tradition in new ways, Do the Don't succeeds in integrating the two approaches in a remarkably organic way. There's no doubt that these are deep blues tunes that are fully imbued with everything that would mean to even a casual blues listener; it's a feeling you can't deny. On the other hand, there are sounds on this album that have probably never been heard on a blues album before, and the band pulls it all off without a hitch. Sam Furnace, mostly on baritone sax, sounds fantastic here, in what were among his final recording sessions. As a rhythm section, Dave Hofstra and Sim Cain are right in the pocket, and while Cain comes on like Drumbo on "Oil Blues," he also knows when to lay behind the beat for a real blues feel. Eric Mingus and Dean Bowman are both excellent vocalists, and along with Sharp, supply bluesy lyrics that never rely on standard blues clichés. Of course, the real star is Sharp's guitar playing. He's got a range of the nastiest guitar tones imaginable, and his guitar cries, screams, and growls with abandon. His solos are reckless and dizzying at times, but never lose the feeling of the blues, which is quite an accomplishment considering some folks will be scratching their heads trying to figure out how he's doing what he's doing. There are also some tasty production details in the mix: the swirl of tremolo guitars in the background of "Lost Souls" and "Stop That Thing," the judiciously used triggers in Cain's hybrid kit on "Life in a Crackerbox," and the programmed rhythm of "In the Drift." "Lost Souls" is also notable for its work-song like chorus and wailing lap steel from Sharp. In fact, just about every track has a jaw dropping guitar solo, whether it's electric, acoustic, or lap steel. Do the Don't is modern, contemporary electric blues that never forgets the grit and grease of the men who pioneered it, and that totally eschews the sheen and safe blues licks of so many contemporary blues albums. This is the real deal, played by men who really understand what real blues is all about. Maybe that's why a blues guitar god like Hubert Sumlin has been sitting in with these guys for years, and not with blues posers like Jonny Lang or Keb' Mo'. Highly Recommended. ~Sean Westergaard

The Chess Project was assembled by Marshall Chess, son of Leonard Chess, one of the two brothers who ran Chicago’s storied blues label Chess Records from the 1940’s through the 1960s, issuing records by Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Koko Taylor, Little Walter, Etta James, and many other greats. The The Chess Project has an album out now called New Moves on which they recast some old Chess label hits, and some blues classics that weren’t on the Chess label. One of the four Neville Brothers, Cyril Neville was the youngest, born on January 10, 1948, in New Orleans, LA. Cyril picked up his love of music from his parents and his older brothers at an early age, but it wasn't until 1967 (at the age of 19) that Cyril began singing professionally, as he united with brothers Art and Aaron in the outfit Art Neville and the Neville Sounds, playing the New Orleans club circuit on a regular basis. Cyril and Aaron eventually left the group, forming another outfit, Soul Machine, shortly thereafter. 1970 saw the release of Cyril's debut solo single, "Gossip" b/w "Tell Me What's On Your Mind," which included backing music by brother Art's new outfit, the Meters. Soul Machine relocated to Nashville, then New York, but both moves failed to help put the group over the top. It just so happened at this time that the Meters were looking to expand their lineup, and asked Cyril to join in on vocals and congas -- contributing to such albums as 1972's Cabbage Alley and 1975's Fire on the Bayou, while the Meters opened up for the Rolling Stones during a sold-out 1974 U.S. tour.

Just as the Meters splintered in 1976, Cyril became enraptured with reggae music (thanks to Bob Marley's landmark Natty Dread album), as all four Neville siblings formed the Neville Brothers group, issuing numerous subsequent recordings. In addition to his work with the Neville Brothers, Cyril has formed other bands over the years, including the Endangered Species Band in 1983 and the Uptown Allstars Band, while he also found time to launch his own record label, Endangered Species. Cyril also founded the New Orleans Musicians Organized (NOMO), which helps musicians who need business advice with their careers. Cyril Neville has issued several solo albums on his own over the years, including 1995's The Fire This Time, and a pair in 2000, New Orleans Cookin' and Soulo. Plus he has guested on various other artist's recordings over the years, including albums by Edie Brickell, Jimmy Buffett, Dr. John, Bob Dylan, Daniel Lanois, and Willie Nelson, among others. ~Greg Prato

Dragon Smoke is a band that formed as part of the New Orleans Jazz Fest tradition known as the “Superjam”. The “Superjam” idea is to put together a band of people who don’t normally play together and see what happens. With the dual vocals of Neville and Lindell, matched with the Galactic rhythm section, the band quickly realized, “We are on to something” and has played every Jazz Fest since it’s inception in 2003. This inception took place at the famed Dragon’s Den, hence the name of the band.

The music centers around Lindell’s blue eyed soul , Neville’s funk and R&B, and Galactic’s groove. Besides a few trips to the West Coast, this band has been strictly playing in New Orleans. With everyone in the band being a leader on their own, it is rare to get this band together. And when it does, it shows that these guys are really having FUN! From the interplay between the members, you would think that Dragon Smoke has been playing shows forever.

The Radiators got started on January 28, 1978, during a rehearsal in the garage of one of the bandmembers; by the late '80s, they had become one of New Orleans' most popular rock & roll bands, serving up a smorgasbord of musical styles that included blues, R&B, funk, and rootsy rock & roll. Founding members keyboardist/vocalist Ed Volker and guitarist/vocalist Camile Baudoin began playing together in the 1960s. Drummer Frank Bua began working with the two in 1970, and guitarist Dave Malone and bassist Reggie Scanlan played with other New Orleans bands until they formed as the Rhapsodizers in the mid-'70s. They changed their name to the Radiators in 1978 and released their debut, Work Done on Premises, two years later on their own Croaker Records. Heat Generation followed in 1982, and the band began to develop a loyal following in the Crescent City by the time percussionist Glenn Sears joined in early '80s, making them a sextet. The Radiators developed a reputation for intense, lengthy marathon-like live shows that would last three hours or more, akin to what the Allman Brothers and Little Feat were doing; their shows became highlights of the annual New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, and word of their reputation spread. In 1987, the Radiators signed to Epic Records and released Law of the Fish, followed two years later with Zig-Zaggin' Through Ghostland. After the release of Total Evaporation in 1991, the band issued Snafu 10-31-'91, 1995's New Dark Ages, and 1996's Party On. The group continued being active into the new millennium, releasing the self-titled The Radiators in 2001 and Dreaming Out Loud in 2006. ~Richard Skelly
