Formed in 1996, the band first became crowd favourites in Hamilton, Ontario’s famous Hess Village. Seven independent album releases, international radio play, and a large local fan base propelled the band to venues across the continent. The group’s last three albums were international hits reaching the top of the Roots and Blues charts and garnering 5-star reviews in blues magazines and blogs around the globe.

The band’s previous release, “Cigar Store”, won 3 Awards at the Independent Blues Awards: Best New Blues, Best R&B Song, and Best Modern Roots Album. “Cigar Store” spent over 47 weeks on the Top 50 Roots Music Reports Blues Charts reaching #2 in Canada, #6 in USA, and #16 in Australia. On the home front the group has been nominated and won several awards including: Hamilton Music Awards, Hammer Blues Awards and Maple Blues Awards. Red-hot live performances have become the talk of the town at venues across the county and beyond – including a three-night stand at Club 152 during the 2016 International Blues Challenge in Memphis, Tennessee.

By the time that Corey Lueck And The Smoke Wagon Blues Band's stellar new release, "It Ain't Easy", had finally come up for review, I had already been grooving on this album for over a month. It had quickly become one of my favorites and most often played albums, as well as, one of the most requested of my friends when they came over for a visit.

Formed in 1997, Corey Lueck And The Smoke Wagon Blues Band, have been a perennial favorite of Southern Ontario, particularly the Hamilton area, known as a hub for great Blues for many years. They perform their unique blend of Chicago Blues, New Orleans Swing, and original material, all along featuring "Funky Harmonica, Whiskey Stained Vocals, Slick Guitar Work, and a Solid Rhythm Section ". With all this, Corey Lueck And The Smoke Wagon Blues Band, have managed to bring forward a unique and creative sound, that instantly becomes additive after only a short while of listening to.

"It Ain't Easy" consists of 15 great Tracks of which Corey Lueck is credited with co-writing all but one, along with Mike Stubbs. Other co-writing credits on a Track each go to Scott Silverthorn and Scott Pritchard. The one cover on "It Ain't Easy" is credited to Rudy Stevenson, whom in addition to Guitarist, mostly Jazz, "was a producer and manager and wrote songs for Nina Simone, George Benson, Joe Zawinul, Herbie Mann, and Dexter Gordon. He does not say a word about it. I just do music! That’s my job!, says the legendary and in the meantime 84-young guitarist ." Rudy Stevenson passed away in 2010.

Although Corey Lueck is a super accomplished Harp player, after listening to "It Ain't Easy", I must say that his true forte is his Vocals. His singing reminded me a lot of a toned down Joe Cocker, with that unique gritty edge. Additional singers on "It Ain't Easy", including Robin Banks, whom sang solo on Track 13, "Where Did I go Wrong" and with Corey on Track 8, "That Voodoo". Rhonda Davidson is credited with Backing Vocals Track 9, "Tongue Tied", as was Guitarists Mike Stubbs. In addition to Lueck and Stubbs, the other member of this trio is Steve Sherman on Drums, as well as Bass, on several Tracks. Additional musicians and performers included Robin Banks, Jesse O'Brien, Gordon Aeichele, Scott Pritchard, Nick Succi, and the Kingston St. Quartet. ~John Vermilyea

Opening with Walking Cane, a funky blues rocker, Corey Lueck has the lead on vocal and Jason Colavecchia on bass and Tibor Lukacs add the hot bottom. Nick Succi brings it on piano and Gordon Aeichele lays down a cool sax solo. Must've Read It Wrong is a driving blues rocker with a solid bass line by Colavecchia. Succi and Aeichele each lay in nice solos and Mike Stubbs' on guitar and Lueck on harp add the dressing. On R&B style track, I Tried, Stubbs lays in a nice intro and Aeichele plays warm sax lines complimenting Lueck's soulful lead vocals. Hoodoo Woman has a real interesting contemporary blues sound, stripped down and basic. With cool raspy vocals and a simple melody line and guitar riff, reinforced by Lueck's harp work. Put The Quilt Out To Dry has a cool percussive feel over a basic, Sonny Boy Williamson feel. With it's dual rhythms, it really digs in, making it one of my favorites on the release. Rock n' roller, Directly Under Her Thumb, has a cool boogie rhythm dressed perfectly by Succi's piano work and the walking bass line of Colavecchia. Stubbs stretches out a little on guitar and Aeichele's sax work is cool. Title track, Cigar Store has a cool walking bass line and with a taste of New Orleans, has a cool horn solo, slide solo and of course boogie piano. Lueck's intro on resonator on White Mule is way cool. The track reminds me quite a bit of Neil Young's Are You Ready For The Country but with an Allman Brother's guitar riff. Interesting. King Biscuit Boy's Mean Old Lady has a cool hi stepping feel with nice slide work by Lueck, a prominent bass line and a real nice piano solo by Succi. Following a smooth R&B hit format, I Can't Change is the most certain radio track on the release with sure footed lead vocals by Lueck and a soulful sax solo by Aeichele. Steve Sherman's organ opener on Quarter Mile really sets the pace for a rolling rocker with a driving drum beat by Lukacs and Stubbs slide work nicely pushing Lueck's lead vocals. Aeichele's aggressive sax solo really gives the track pop and Lueck hit's it hard on harp giving this track real starch. Wrapping the release is a casual, rag style track, You've Been a Good Old Wagon. It has just the right feel with sassy New Orleans style sax work, piano and harp... it's a great closer for a solid release by Smoke Wagon. ~bman
