In this album, Ivan has written a picture through words and songs of his experiences traveling through local communities in Kimberley over a 20-year period. Charming to say the least. And I will present this footage in the not too distant future for your viewing pleasure. Born in Alexandria, Egypt and migrated to Perth in 1963, Ivan Zar was drawn to the Blues at an early age and taught himself the harmonica and Delta Blues style Guitar. In 1968, he formed his first band "King Biscuit Co", as well as writing his own songs. After playing in several bands, Ivan formed a band called The Elks in 1975, which was to introduce the Chicago style of Blues to the mainstream. The band toured the South West and across to major cities in the Eastern States. They had the opportunity to support B.B King, Rory Gallagher, Joe Cocker and Ike and Tina Turner, and recorded an album Refer to Drawer, which is now a sought after Australian Blues album by blues affeciandos. In 1981, Ivan recorded some of the material that he had written and worked in a duo with Brian Fitzgerald called The Deltatones. They worked in cafe's, folk festivals, small bars and supported John Mayall, Mick Jagger, John Hammond and Leo Kottke. In 1983, they recorded Me and the Devil as well as a cassette Harp of the West, which featured some of WA's most prominent harmonica players. Both of these recordings are also sought after blues fans alike. Going solo again, Ivan had the opportunity to play with such acts as The Black Sorrows, Paul Kelly, Bondi Cigars and Cold Chisel. From 1992-95, he opened The Bindoon Rock Festival and has been a part of Blues at Bridgetown since it's inception in 1993. During this period Ivan was busking in the streets of Northbridge every friday and saturday night - occasionally with other players. He also got the chance to start touring throughout outback WA, playing in pubs, Aboriginal communities, schools and many royal shows. 1995 saw the release of Ivan's first CD Track me Down, for which he received the 'Outstanding Recording Award' at that year's Blues at Bridgetown. In 1996, with John Wilson, he toured Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania. 1998 saw the release of Ivan's second CD Afrika Tide and he again toured the eastern states. While there he had the opportunity to record with some friends from Perth and came up with the next CD Ivan Zar's Deltatones. Back in Perth, a chance meeting in May 2003 with 13-yr-old Ben Witt saw the two working in local pubs and a live recording at the Perth Blues Club in June. They also performed at Bridgetown Blues in 2004 and 2006. Both Ben and Ivan were invited to be part of the West Australian showcase at Goulburn Blues Festival in NSW in 2007.

Thank you MapleBlues and Bob Mac

Australian born recording artist Anni Piper, known as the First Lady of the Blues in her homeland, returns with a new album. “Men Are Like Potato Chips” is the seventh studio recording from Piper, who now resides in Portland, Oregon. She is not only a sultry vocalist but an accomplished bass player, insightful composer, and show stopping performer.

The nine songs that make up the recording are originals with the exception of John Prine’s ‘Angel from Montgomery’ featuring Tim Langford of Too Slim & The Taildraggers on guitar. Piper made this album a family affair and is proud to feature her son Flynn Piper on backing vocals. Stylistically, it is a diverse collection, ranging from traditional blues to face-melting blues rock. Piper’s originals are thematically quirky, often humorous, and offer a bold, unique perspective on relationships and intimacy.

Piper states unabashedly “It’s been more than twenty years since I released my first album. Over time I got so tired of hearing that I needed to be careful not to be ‘too sexy’, and finally I said ‘f**k that’. I’m a sensual person, and I’ve been doing this too long to not release art that authentically reflects my personality.”

Piper’s debut album won Best New Talent at the Australian Blues Music Awards. She subsequently secured a deal with Blues Leaf Records in New Jersey. Piper decided to make her home in the USA, where she has performed at festivals and distinguished blues venues in over 40 states, breaking hearts and taking names everywhere she goes. /Bluestown Music

A deep thinker and truth speaker, with a penchant for all things peculiar. Songwriting that cuts to the bone.

A full band explosion of songs, stories and musical mayhem; Gretsch electric guitar, horns, reeds, Hammond organ, drums and bass. All the while, Wearne's crooning, cutting, monolithic vocal keeps lyricism and poetry at the forefront. Kara Grainger - That's How I Got To Memphis

Album: That's How I Got To Memphis
Size: 83,6 MB
Time: 36:15
File: MP3 @ 320K/s
Released: 2025
Styles: Blues/Soul mix
Art: Front

1. Texas Blues (4:44)
2. That's How I Got To Memphis (4:07)
3. Light Your Fire (3:32)

6. Love Played A Game (3:18)
7. Doodle Loop (World Is A Little Bit Under The Weather) (3:23)
8. Same Old River (3:35)
9. Lessons (4:07)

Australian-born, Nashville-based Kara Grainger has been gracing the international blues and roots circuit for almost two decades. Originally hailed as a guitar slinger, for her adept picking and slide skills, Grainger has developed into a triple threat with formidable singer-songwriter skills. As the album title, “That’s How I Got to Memphis,” suggests, Grainger has fulfilled a lifelong dream by recording in Memphis. Not only that, she recorded this, her fifth album, at the iconic Royal Studios under the direction of the celebrated producer, Lawrence “Boo’ Mitchell, while in the company of the Hi Rhythm Section. Grainger points to Al Green and Ann Peebles as two of her all-time favorite artists, obviously honored to be indirectly associated with them on this project, as the Hi Rhythm Section played for both of those artists as well.

Grainger delivers six originals of the nine, with Tom T. Hall’s title track, a Memphis standard co-written by Peebles, and another from NOLA’s The Meters. It’s a short listen, running only for 36 minutes. The backing band has many familiar musicians who have appeared on Memphis albums through the years. Among them are the two Hi Rhythm Section stalwarts Reverend Charles Hodges on the B3 and Leroy Hodges on bass. The Norman sisters (Shontelle and Sharisse) contribute background vocals, along with the modern-day Memphis Horns – trumpeter Marc Franklin and saxophonist Kirk Smothers. All considered, it’s a large cast of 14 in the credits.

Recording under Boo Mitchell’s direction and with the vaunted Hi Rhythm Section makes for a “can’t miss” project. Grainger admirably states her case within these hallowed walls with mostly her own material and adherence to her own style. She rarely allows herself to fall into the trap of R&B cliches, which is tempting in this setting. In short, she does it her way, while honoring the legacy of the Memphis sound. /Jim Hynes, Rock & Blues Muse

Gwyn Ashton - Grease Bucket

Album: Grease Bucket
Size: 88,3 MB
Time: 37:58
File: MP3 @ 320K/s
Released: 2025
Styles: Blues/Rock
Art: Front

1. Something That The Cat Dragged In (3:11)
2. Howlin' At The Moon (4:21)
3. Evil Child (4:15)
4. Green Light Blues (4:43)
5. When The Well Runs Dry (2:42)
6. Little Bit Of Crazy (3:06)
7. Somebody (4:08)
8. Self-Isolation Blues (3:33)
9. Down & Dirty (3:50)
10. Blues For The Tortured Soul (4:05)

Gwyn Ashton is a bit of a maverick, a nomadic troubadour, born in Wales, raised in Australia, and on the road ever since. "Grease Bucket" is visceral, as raw as feasting on bloodied steak. Ten totally original blues tracks, for tortured souls, with Aussie bassist Chris Lambden and drummer Paul Wheeler. Brace yourself to be blitzed in the Ashton liquidiser. Thumping drums, a filthy five-string ’60s guitar, and thundering bass open "Something the Cat Dragged In" – a serious night on the tiles. It’s rock ’n’ roll, daytime is for sleeping it off. Guaranteed to wake you up. They slip straight into the funk groove of "Howling at the Moon", full of heavy bass riffs and howling slide. Guest organist Jesse Deane Freeman steps up for "Green Light Blues" - green means go, but it’s the end of the road – a more soulful shade of blues.

Seriously fuzzed-up lap steel assaults our ears in the swaggering "When the Well Runs Dry". Vocals are delivered punk-rap style, but ask yourself: what are you gonna do when the money runs out? Savage but addictive. Drums bring in the Cream-like "Somebody" – a great slice of rock-blues, with insistent, punchy rhythm, and guitar and slide as raw as a paper cut. A brilliant, unmissable track. Hard-edged as a knuckle sandwich, "Self-Isolation Blues" may feel a bit behind the times now, but it’s in yer face and impossible to ignore. Ashton sees the coast is clear: time to get "Down and Dirty". The title sums it up – it’s about grabbing the moment when it’s presented, and yes, we’re talking s-e-x. Wonderfully filthy slide and greasy lyrics.

The album closes with "Blues for the Tortured Soul" – solid, driving rhythm, plastered with plenty of slide-edged guitar. A strong finale to what is probably Ashton’s best album to date. Ashton has recorded with with Rory Gallaghers band, played with Robert Plants, and worked through a bucket-list of rock-band musicians. On this album he leaves nothing out: playful lyrics delivered like custard pies, mean guitar riffs filling your mind – a full-on assault. Gwyn Ashton has created an excellent, seismic record. /Graham Munn, Slap Mag

It's been decades since the Melbourne Age recognized Nick as “Australia’s virtuoso of acoustic roots and blues” and in those intervening years the legend has grown with every US tour, now totalling thirteen and every new acclaimed album, now more than twenty.

Classic blues and country fingerstyle underpins a vast repertoire, but the influences are diverse. They range from his ragtime guitar heroes Big Bill, Blind Blake and of course Robert Johnson but include obvious references to players as eclectic as Doc Watson, Merle Travis and the modern school of John Fahey, Leo Kottke and even the English icons Bert Jansch and others.

His songs have won countless awards including the Australian Song Contest twice, every conceivable Australia blues award multiple times, and festival song competitions in the USA. In late 2025 a track from his latest album Further Down the Line won the Victorian Blues award for song of the year.

At the recent International Blues Challenge in Memphis Tennessee Nick won “Best Solo/Duo” guitarist from a staggeringly large competitive field further highlighting his standing.

A typical performance can include classic fingerstyle instrumentals such as Sleepwalk and Albatross, reflective Dylanesque lyricism and high energy roots and blues. Along the way you will hear a lifetime’s stories and songs from a vast career. At times you might also glimpse wonderful twelve-string tunes and stinging bottleneck slide on his trusty resophonic guitars.

Nick has headlined at most Australian blues, folk and jazz festivals including twenty-five times at Port Fairy, and multiple appearances at many others. A splendid time is guaranteed for lovers of fine acoustic music!

With influence from the deep south, these guys have heart. This band was not created to play in a restaurant. Fronted by Mississippi Jeff Cripps, (well known owner of A# Sharp Recording Studio and 2002, 2003 and 2005 Australian Blues Music Awards’ Producer Of The Year, with a dozen of his artists also having won Australian Blues Awards) on slide guitar and vocals. The band is driven by John Gannon on bass with Derek Smith on drums in the engine room.

With grand performances at the Goulburn, Thredbo, Launceston, Newcastle, Forth Valley, Gosford and Davistown Blues Festivals, and sundry other gigs in Sydney, Perth, Tasmania, Canberra and the East Coast, it has been proven without a shadow of a doubt, Mississippi Shakedown never fails to please an audience, whether it be an audience of blues aficionados, or Joe Public.
