Down In Texas ’71 captures a special snapshot in time during the pivotal year of 1971 for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame group. Coming two months after the release of At Fillmore East in July and occurring one month before the death of Duane Allman in October, the Austin show presents the original ABB line-up—Duane Allman, Gregg Allman, Dickey Betts, Berry Oakley, Butch Trucks and Jaimoe—at the peak of their creativity. An innovative “You Don’t Love Me” and the jazz-inspired “Hot ’Lanta” give hints of where the group may have taken their music if Duane had lived. In addition, Down In Texas ’71 features saxophonist Rudolph “Juicy” Carter sitting in on six out of the CD’s nine tracks, which is the most extensive guest appearance available with the band’s first incarnation. Juicy and Jaimoe had played together with Percy Sledge, and it was Juicy who coined the moniker Jaimoe for the drummer born as Johnny Lee Johnson.

On September 21, 2000, following the passing of Allen Woody, a founding member of Gov’t Mule and longtime Allman Brothers Band bass player, many of his friends and musical heroes came together to celebrate his life at a historic concert at Roseland Ballroom in New York City. “One For Woody” was a landmark event that lives on as a cherished memory for all those who were in attendance.

On November 22, 2010 at Roseland, “Another One For Woody” will feature sets by The Allman Brothers Band, Gov’t Mule and The North Mississippi Allstars Duo (Luther and Cody Dickinson) along with many special guests who were touched by Allen’s friendship, music and memory. Like the original concert, “Another One For Woody” all net proceeds will go to a cause near to Allen’s heart. This 10th Anniversary event will raise money for musical education in schools.

Bill Graham s Fillmore East Last Three Nights, featuring major artists; Albert King, J. Geils Band, Edgare Winter, Mountain, the Beach Boys, Allman Brothers Band & Country Joe McDonald, June 1971. The Fillmore East opened in Manhattan in March 1968. Over the next three years it hosted almost every major rock artist of the era, as well as giants of soul, blues, folk, gospel and jazz. Bill Graham decided to close it in June 1971, but before doing so he assembled a remarkable 3-day bill featuring some of the most iconic and influential acts in America, spanning pop (the Beach Boys), blues (Albert King), rock n roll (the J. Geils Band, Edgar Winter, Mountain, the Allman Brothers Band) and folk (Country Joe McDonald a nod towards the venue s psychedelic roots). The swagger that distinguished the original lineup of The Allman Brothers Band is on full display here in "Don't Keep Me Wondering," but a comparable confidence permeates this entire performance captured roughly two months before the untimely death of founding member guitarist Duane Allman. Recorded August 26th 1971 at New York's A&R Studios (and broadcast live on WPLJ-FM radio), the sextet is clearly sensing the realization their hard work was beginning to come to fruition with the burgeoning success of At Fillmore East (Atlantic, 1971) released the previous month.

Comprised of a setlist not all that different than that which comprises the iconic concert album, the musicianship here is also of a comparably high level of inspiration. Duane sets the tone with fiery, abandoned slide playing the likes of which illuminates "Statesboro Blues" and "Trouble No More," yet the rest of The Brothers are not far behind in their contributions of subtlety: guitarist Dickey Betts, in fact, almost steals the show from his counterpart on "You Don't Love Me (even given Skydog's heartrending tribute to King Curtis on the "Soul Serenade" interpolation).

Gregg Allman's rich soulful vocals, such as on "Stormy Monday," radiate an intensity equal to the improvisations, his work on Hammond organ bespeaks a confidence he shares with his bandmates and his piano work on "Done Somebody Wrong" injects a barrelhouse flavor into the arrangement not always so prevalent in other versions of the tune. And The Allman Brothers' ability to find nuances in such tried and true material such as that and "One Way Out," is one of their most distinctive collective virtues. Berry Oakley stepped into the void of the elder Allman's presence in the year before the bassist himself died in a motorcycle accident eerily similar to his comrade's, and A&R Studios illustrates how much he lent to the integrity of the original ABB lineup. Equally melodious and rhythmic instrumental lines underpin each successive segment of "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed," and it's the low rumble of the bass on the uncommon closer "Hot 'Lanta," that imparts so much drama to its concluding crescendo.

The sound quality on this CD varies slightly at the start, perhaps not surprisingly as the engineers dial in an appropriate balance. And even though the overall mix is slightly muffled in the low registers, the stereo separation is superior to some of the officially sanctioned archive ABB releases. More importantly, the precision, passion and spontaneity in the musicianship is at least on par and may, in fact, be a cut above that of the closing Fillmore set on the 'Deluxe Edition' of Eat A Peach (Universal, 2006). A&R Studios New York 26th August 1971 is a must have for fans of The Allman Brothers Band and anyone else who relishes improvisational rock of the highest order. ~Doug Collette

Various - All My Friends: Celebrating The Songs & Voice Of Gregg Allman (2-Disc set)

On January 10, 2014, a multi-generational assortment of musicians from the worlds of rock, blues and country joined together at Atlanta's historic Fox Theatre for a once-in-a-lifetime all-star performance to pay tribute to the life and music of the legendary singer/musician/songwriter Gregg Allman. That live musical event can now be experienced via the new multimedia package All My Friends: Celebrating the Songs & Voice of Gregg Allman.

Shot in high definition video with 5:1 Dolby sound, this one-DVD, two-CD package captures the four-hour concert event in its entirety. The show features a diverse assortment of high-profile Allman admirers paying tribute to the iconic veteran rocker, delivering distinctive new performances of classic material drawn from his four and a half decades as a recording artist, encompassing his landmark work with the legendary Allman Brothers Band as well as his parallel solo career. The variety of the artists paying tribute to Allman, and the diversity of their interpretations of his songs, attests to the broad appeal of Allman's talents, which transcend stylistic and generational boundaries.

With musical direction by noted producer/musician Don Was, several of the guest performers are drawn from the Allman Brothers Band's extended musical family, including current ABB guitarists Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks (who also appears here with his wife and frequent musical partner Susan Tedeschi) and Gregg's talented son Devon Allman. The prestigious slate of performers also includes such Allman contemporaries as Jackson Browne, Dr. John, John Hiatt, Taj Mahal, Wet Willie singer Jimmy Hall and classic soul man Sam Moore (of Sam and Dave fame), along with such younger acts as Robert Randolph, Keb' Mo', Widespread Panic and Pat Monahan of Train. The world of country music, long a key component in Allman's musical consciousness, is represented here by such notable guest performers as Eric Church, Trace Adkins, Vince Gill, Martina McBride, Zac Brown, Brantley Gilbert and Jess Franklin.

All My Friends: Celebrating the Songs & Voice of Gregg Allman would not be complete without Allman's own authoritative voice, which is spotlighted here on collaborative readings of landmark tunes with Gregg's onetime L.A. roommate Jackson Browne ("These Days," "Melissa"), Vince Gill and Zac Brown ("Midnight Rider") and Taj Mahal ("Statesboro Blues"). Gregg also joins with the Allman Brothers Band to deliver fiery readings of the classics "Dreams" and "Whipping Post," which precede a set-closing "Will the Circle Be Unbroken," performed by the show's full cast. With the recent announcement that the Allman Brothers Band will cease touring at the end of 2014, these may be among the last recordings of the band on stage.

The All My Friends show also features a prestigious house band that includes Don Was on bass, former Allman Brothers Band members Chuck Leavell (keyboards) and Jack Pearson (guitar), ex-Black Crowes guitarist Audley Freed, Wallflowers keyboardist Rami Jaffee and renowned drummer-to-the-stars Kenny Aronoff. As Allman later enthused, "That show was one of the highlights of my life. It was great to see old friends, and everyone was so gracious and really poured their souls into my songs. It was a very special night."

They say you never forget your first time.

For nearly 25 years, traveling to New York's Beacon Theatre to see The Allman Brothers Band play a stretch of high-spirited live shows has become a rite of passage for fans old and new. What began as a daring ten-night run at the acclaimed venue is now a symbiotic relationship between a band, a venue and a devoted fan base, the likes of which are virtually unprecedented in rock and roll history.

Play All Night: Live At The Beacon Theatre 1992, is a new two-disc set showcasing The Allman Brothers Band s very first time playing such an extended run at the Beacon.

In more than four decades together, The Allman Brothers Band have faced personal setbacks and enjoyed monumental reinventions in the studio and on the road. The announcement of a 20th anniversary tour in 1989, after a seven year hiatus from recording or performing, made even the most faithful fans wonder how the band could rise again.

But the group was doing much more than merely reuniting. Founding members Gregg Allman (vocals/keyboards), Dickey Betts (guitar), Butch Trucks and Jaimoe (drums) were joined by a trio of talented up-and-comers: Allen Woody on bass, Marc Quinones on percussion, and Warren Haynes on guitar. The hiring of Haynes, a then little-known guitarist who'd toured with Betts, was a considerable stroke of genius; his guitar approach heavily evoked the spirit of Duane Allman's playing, drawing a clear line from the band's past to its future.

That reunion tour saw The Brothers first take the Beacon's stage for an extended run - a residency that s now a tradition for both band and venue. The band would tape two of their 10 shows at the theater in March 1992. Amazingly, material from these electrifying shows has seen virtually no release - until now.
