After a health-induced hiatus, Popa Chubby, the legendary blues-rock guitarist, roars back with "I Love Freddie King," a heartfelt tribute album to the late great Texas Cannonball himself. Produced by Popa Chubby and Gulf Coast Records' executive producer Mike Zito, this 11-track masterpiece was recorded at G.B.'s Juke Joint and features contributions from an all-star roster of modern guitar heroes: Joe Bonamassa, Mike Zito, Christone "Kingfish" Ingram, Eric Gales, Albert Castiglia, Arthur Neilson, and V.D. King.

Reflecting on the album, Popa Chubby calls Freddie King his lifelong muse, whose music "changed my soul forever." The album brings King's legacy roaring back to life, spanning his early instrumental hits, Shelter Records era, and more. With a core band of Mike Merritt (bass), Andrei Koribanics III (drums), and Mike DiMeo (keyboards), this record captures the sweat, soul, and unrelenting energy of Freddie King.

Tracks like "I'm Going Down" (ft. Joe Bonamassa) and "Big Legged Woman" (ft. Christone 'Kingfish' Ingram) explode with fiery guitar work and passionate vocals. Other standouts include "She's A Burglar" (ft. Mike Zito) and "Hideaway" (ft. Arthur Neilson). Each collaboration brings something special to the table, making this album a must-listen for blues fans and guitar lovers alike.

Despite battling a rare spinal disorder during production, Popa Chubby pressed on to create what he calls "a journey of love and homage." His raw determination, combined with the extraordinary talent of his guest musicians, resulted in a fitting tribute to Freddie King - the bridge between blues and rock, who forever altered the genre's course.

Popa Chubby & The Beast Band : Popa Chubby (guitar, vocals); Mike Merritt (bass); Andrei Koribanics III (drums); Mike DiMeo (keyboards); Harold Horowitz (trumpet); Curtis Hotgrefe (saxophone); Eliza Neals (backing vocals).

The new album was recorded at G. Bluey’s Juke Joint in Long Island City, New York, on October 24 and 25, 2022, and features Popa Chubby (guitar and vocals), backed by his all-star “Beast Band,” which consists of Mike Merritt (bass); Mike DiMeo (keyboards) and Stefano Giudici (drums). “This record is a reunion in a lot of ways,” stated Popa Chubby. “Rejoining with my long-time ally and bassist extraordinaire Mike Merritt and recording in my old Manny’s Car Wash engineer Glen Forrest’s studio. The icing on the cake was Mike Dimeo on keys. Add the Centurion Stefano Giudici on drums and you’ve got some heavy blues rock! It’s a live best of for the ages!”

“In the early ‘90s, Popa Chubby was the house band at New York City’s Manny’s Car Wash,” says the man, himself. “I hosted the jam every Sunday that saw everyone from the Allman Brothers, Stephen Stills, Joe Sample, Odetta and many more pass through. The apprentice Soundman was Glen Forrest. I had a small recording studio in the West Village and I hired Glen to work for me. He proved himself beyond my expectations and with great vision and perseverance set out to create the ultimate recording environment. He landed in Long Island City, New York, where he holds court over three floors of a building which house the studio, lounges, art galleries and warehouse. We recorded the record there because it gave us a great vibe, sound and an intimate live in the studio setting.”

Born Ted Horowitz, Popa Chubby is a long-time, New York City veteran blues rocker, who also produced and mixed his upcoming new album. He’s been hard-rocking the blues in his fierce and soulful way for more than 35 years. Over the course of his career, he has been a force to be reckoned with on the guitar, and his tempestuous, soulful playing has never been more powerful. An imposing figure with a shaven head, tattooed arms, a goatee and a performance style he describes as “the Stooges meets Buddy Guy, Motörhead meets Muddy Waters and Jimi Hendrix meets Robert Johnson,” Popa Chubby is an endearing character who has become one of the genre’s most popular figures.

Popa Chubby - One Million Broken Guitars

Album: One Million Broken Guitars
Size: 127,5 MB
Time: 54:55
File: MP3 @ 320K/s
Released: 1997
Styles: Blues-rock, rock
Art: Full

1. Nobody Knows You When You're Down And Out (4:39)
2. What's Your Point? (5:11)
3. Dance The Night Away (4:46)
4. Real Thing (5:12)
5. Laya What Ya Tryin' To Do (3:59)
6. Long Way Home (4:36)
7. Protected (3:19)
8. It All Turns To Gold (3:23)
9. What's Your Problem? (4:02)
10. Naughty Little People (5:28)
11. Nobody Loves Me Like I Love Myself (5:13)
12. Oh Roger (From Road Rot) (Bonus) (4:59)

Over the course of his career, Popa Chubby hasn't exactly grown. Instead, he's found his formula and he's sticking to it, thank you, no matter what anybody else might say. That's probably why he didn't quite cut it as a major-label artist - there is a market for his competent, muscular blues-rock, just not a large one. That cult audience is the reason why he's better suited for the indies, but on One Million Broken Guitars - unbelievably, his fifth album (only one was a live effort) - he's not distinctive enough to be a true cult artist.

He turns out amiable post-SRV blues-rock, spiked with a couple of jazz flourishes, and while the end result is enjoyable, it's not necessarily memorable. Even the better moments are usually instrumental highlights, not actual songs, which fade immediately after they're played. Again, it confirms that Chubby is a fine guitarist, but his weakness as a songwriter is beginning to overwhelm him, and One Million Broken Guitars is a testament to this Achilles heel. /Stephen Thomas Erlewine, AllMusic

Popa Chubby - Emotional Gangster

Size: 124.6 MB
Time: 53:03
File: MP3 @ 320K/s
Released: 2022
Styles: Electric Blues, Blues Rock
Art: Full

01. Tonight I'm Gonna Be The Man (4:34)
02. New Way Of Walking (5:15)
03. Equal Opportunity (4:18)
04. Hoochie Cootchie Man (5:14)
05. Save The Best For Last (3:28)
06. When You Wanna Make War (3:27)
07. Dust My Broom (3:19)
08. I'm The Dog (3:11)
09. Doing OK (4:32)
10. Fly Away (5:58)
11. Why You Wanna Make War (French Version) (3:27)
12. Master IP (Bonus Track CD Only) (6:14)

Twelve new tracks featuring the Chubbfatha on many instruments and doing all the mixing and recording duties. "This record definitely reflects happier times and good solid dose of classic blues!", says Popa from his studio full of guitars in the Hudson Valley. "l specifically included covers like Hoochie Coochie Man and Dust My Broom to show respect for the Fathers. Willie Dixon has always been my idol, you know."

But the real gems here come in Popa's original compositions. "Equal Opportunity" is a light hearted sing along that celebrates the feminine at a time when ii is seriously needed. And songs like "Fly Away" and both versions French and English of "Why You Wanna Make War?" Are big standouts! There is more than an ample amount of pure guitar bliss on this record and slide guitar on tracks like "Tonight I'm Gonna Be the Man" add flavor to a savory mix!

For an added bonus, Harmonica Wizard Jason Ricci joins Popa on the Blues Rock anthem "New Way of Walking" and the swing shuffte "Save the Best for Last".

This record is indeed made in the spirit of new shoes!
A new way of walking. lt's created with the intention of moving forward to an old truth and a new reality that all are appreciated for the unique energeticcontribution they bring to our collective life. Love is all there is.

I love you all ~Papa Chubby 2022

Popa Chubby - Tinfoil Hat

08. Boogie For Tony (4:42)
09. Cognitive Dissonance (4:23)
10. Embee's Song (4:25)
11. 1968 Again (4:27)

Be assured that even dawning on sixty and with a career spanning more than 30 years, Popa Chubby continues to fight against the injustices of this world!

And the least we can say about 2020 and the Covid-19 pandemic is that it offered him the “magnificent” inspiration that fed into the creation of his new album “Tinfoil Hat”!

As he writes himself, this record’s creation was self-evident from the beginning of the first lockdown in March. Back at his base in the Hudson Valley and following his last show played in Florida, our man immediately wanted to send a message of empathy and support to his fans, and that’s how the song “can I call You My Friends?” was conceived’.

The reaction was so sudden, warm, and intense that he found there was enough material for continuing this ,’dialogue” by composing other songs that today form the framework for “Tinfoil Hat

The whole thing was entirely “homemade,” recorded and played by Popa Chubby with the extra Guts and Soul that great causes often bring to life.

“Tinfoil Hat” and the 11 songs that make it up were born from a mixture of love, despair, fear, frustration, pain, joy, sorrow, resolution and the leap into the great unknown imposed by the coronavirus that has been with all of us all since last March.

The Trump administration’s chaotic and reckless management of the crisis provided Popa Chubby with the inspiration for uncompromising lyrics. Like those of the title song (supported by, to say the least, an explicit clip) or themes such as “You Ain’t said shit,” “No Justice, No peace, or,”Another Day ln Hell.”

Without forgetting to pass on messages of hope (“Someday Soon, Change ls Gonna Come”) or even for good behavior in the face of the virus with “Baby Put On Your Mask.” ln the album notes, he writes, “Like all of you, this pandemic has pushed me to the very edge of my humanity. But the music, the sweet music, has put me back on the right path once again’ So I offer this work with humility and the deep devotion I have for you !”. That says it all!

With this new album the New York City blues inventor is back in force to celebrate his career of 30 years.

15 magnificent titles: tender and bestial Popa, full of rage and love, electricity and emotion. A must have for all his fans !

This album is a treat because it goes through the whole range of emotions and sentiments that can be put into songs. including love, of course. For dessert, Popa Chubby covers Kiss. Not the group Kiss but the song by Prince. “Prince, really had a big influence on me.as a guitar player. There really nobody above him except maybe Hendrix. I love that song, my girl friend loved that song when I played it for her. Kiss is a blues song!”

Popa Chubby is returning to the roster of the Dixiefrog label after five years of infidelity. Dixiefrog meant a lot of good for Popa Chubby and vice versa. And, as sings Popa Chubby in the middle of his new album: The best is yet to come.

06. Pawn Shop Blues (Roadhouse) (Feat. Popa Chubby & Dave Keyes) (3:22)

Gritty voiced Eliza Neals belts out the boogie blues with the juke jointing team of guitarist Popa Chubby, keyboarder Dave Keyes, bassist Chris Gambaro-Vega and drummer John Medieros Jr on this full fisted ep. A horn section supports the shuffling “Pawn Shop Blues” that has Neals growling like a hungry lioness, while Keyes’ dark organ oozes ominious moods while Neal years on the thunderous “Blackish Grey.” The team drives like a Mack Truck as they run through a brick wall on “”Bitten By The Blues” and Chubby makes the strings cry for mercy on “ Livin With Yo Mama.” A trip down the dusty roads on the acoustic “Knock Knock Knockin” has Neals rasping through her last breath. Gotta see this band in concert, if my hubcaps aren’t ripped off in the parking lot!

Ted Horowitz, a.k.a. Popa Chubby, definitely did not have the easiest start. As a white blues artist the American singer, songwriter and guitarist often provoked a massive critique. But he consistently pursued his goals, never got off track and with his unique style and his love for both, blues and hard rock, Popa Chubby became one of the world’s most innovative blues rock artist with a rich musical foundation with many studio albums.

Now the "Beast" is back with an album that represents over twenty-eight years of rocking the blues as Popa Chubby. "Prime Cuts: The Very Best Of The Beast From The East" truly is a treasure box and contains songs from his early albums as well as songs from the successful albums that were released during the last couple of years, such as "The Catfish" and "Two Dogs".

"I handpicked these tracks", says Popa, "going through a catalogue that is 28 years big. These are truly the 'prime cuts'. The best the chef has to offer. Seasoned perfectly and served with love. Play them loud, play them often and always." But Popa would not be Popa if he would not have more brilliant songs to share with his audience. With the physical 2 CD album this versatile and genre-defining artist delivers 11 additional and previously unreleased songs (nine studio- and two live songs).

Theodore Joseph "Ted" Horowitz, who plays under the stage name of Popa Chubby (a play on the slang idiom "pop a chubby", meaning to get an erection), is an American Rock / Electric blues singer, songwriter, and guitarist. His career has always been about moving forward and carving a place for himself in the imposing terrain of the music business, overcoming odds to continue growing and maturing as a creative force. He has built a constantly increasing base of fans across the world, where in many territories he is a star.

“People ask me why 2 dogs? It’s an old fable – 2 dogs, 2 wolves”. We have become polarized as a race. There is a battle inside each of us. Each day we rise and must choose our path calling upon each other and our own spirits for strength and courage. The dog we feed is the one that rules the dog we starve dies of neglect. It is up to each of us to use our spirit to feed the dog that will enable all of us to thrive. I believe in the triumph of the human spirit, I believe that a grain of hope is more powerful than a mountain of fear. And I believe I love. We are here to love. Love each other, love the gift that is this life, and love music. So my dear friends, I make this offering to you with love, hope and the awareness that the dog I feed is the one that will help me to bring all the love in my soul to you.”

Born Ted Horowitz in the Bronx, NY, Popa Chubby was the son of a candy store owner. At 13, Chubby began playing drums; shortly thereafter, he discovered the music of the Rolling Stones and began playing guitar. Although he grew up in the 1970s, Chubby took his cue from artists of the 1960s, including Sly & the Family Stone, Jimi Hendrix, and Eric Clapton, among others. By the time he was in his early twenties, he enjoyed and played blues music, but also worked for a while backing punk poet Richard Hell. Chubby's first big break was winning a national blues talent search sponsored by KLON, a public radio station in Long Beach, CA. He won the New Artist of the Year award and opened at the Long Beach Blues Festival in 1992. Chubby has continued to play more than 200 club dates a year through the 1990s. ~Richard Skelly

His Sony/Okeh debut, Booty and the Beast, was produced by longtime Atlantic Records engineer/producer Tom Dowd, whose recordings by Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Wilson Pickett, and others are legendary. In 1994, Chubby released several albums on his own Laughing Bear label, It's Chubby Time and Gas Money, before landing his deal with Sony Music/Okeh Records for Booty and the Beast, his major-label debut, released in 1995. In 1996, the 1 (800) PrimeCD label released a live recording of Chubby's, Hit the High Hard One. Two years later, One Million Broken Guitars was released on Lightyear Records; Brooklyn Basement Blues followed in 1999. In 2000, Chubby signed with the Blind Pig label and released How'd a White Boy Get the Blues? in 2001. The disc turned out to be a slight departure, incorporating elements of contemporary pop and hip-hop. 2002's The Good, the Bad and the Chubby showed great development in the artist's songwriting and included the 9/11 commentary "Somebody Let the Devil Out." Blind Pig released a collection of early Chubby recordings, The Hungry Years, in 2003. Troubled by the war in Iraq, Chubby released his most political album, Peace, Love and Respect, a year later. Two albums previously available only in France -- Live at FIP and Wild -- were compiled by the Blind Pig label and released as Big Man Big Guitar in 2005, followed by a new studio set called Stealing the Devil's Guitar a year later. Electric Chubbyland, a two-disc set of Chubby covering Jimi Hendrix songs, appeared from Dixie Frog that same year, and then was repackaged and issued as two single discs by Blind Pig in 2007. In 2008, Chubby released the country punk inflected Vicious Country on Dixie Frog, followed by a return to blues rock in 2010 with The Fight Is On. The year 2011 found him moving to the Provogue label for the album Back to New York City. ~by Richard Skelly

Popa Chubby - Universal Breakdown Blues

Year: 2013
Bitrate: MP3@320K/s
Time: 58:40
Size: 137,1 MB
Styles: Electric blues, blues-rock
Scans: Full

1. I Don't Want Nobody (4:20)
2. I Ain't Giving Up (4:37)
3. Universal Breakdown Blues (4:42)
4. The People's Blues (8:47)
5. Rock Me Baby (4:58)
6. 69 Dollars (4:03)
7. Over The Rainbow (8:57)
8. I Need A Lil' Mojo (3:54)
9. Danger Man (3:07)
10. Goin' Back To Amsterdam (Reefer Smokin' Man) (4:26)
11. The Finger Bangin' Boogie (2:36)
12. Mind Bender (4:09)

Unhappy with what he sees as an uncertain era, Popa Chubby aggressively delivers the Universal Breakdown Blues ("A shakedown you can use") on this 2013 release, but the end message is one of hope. Still, it takes a lot of shouting, screaming, and intense blues rock to get there, beginning with the hard-rocking, boogie blues opener “I Don’t Want Nobody”, where Hammond organist Dave Keyes gives the funky support over which Chubby churns out the riffs.

Later, there’s the title track where Chubby’s love of Hendrix-styled playing meets his socially conscious and socially disgusted lyrics, plus the shuffling breakup number “69 Dollars”, where an ex’s weekend whiskey bill is added up, but the key cut has to be the epic “Over the Rainbow”, delivered in a version that evolves so significantly, it could very well be called a “suite.” That stellar cover is a giant step forward for Chubby, and he’s not one known for his love of growth and progress, but if sneering at giving the people what they want, or doing what you do best is an issue, then this ain’t your Popa. Chubby’s fans can think of it as the album with a little more social commentary, plus the usual guts and grit, or standard issue but quite satisfying. /David Jeffries, AllMusic
