- SUMMER VACATION TIME IS HERE FOLKS! -

Well folks, it's time for us to have ourselves a little summer vacation. Like most people, we too need some time off to concentrate on our own lives and spend time with family and friends. This means that from JULY 1 until JULY 19 there will be no new posts and we will not attend to re-up requests.

We ask you kindly NOT TO ASK FOR ANY RE-UPS while we're on vacation since we don't want to be swamped with work once we are back. Thanks in advance for being understanding. The Basement will of course still be available for those of you who want to help each other out with certain requests.

We wish all you visitors a good time while we're away. This place wouldn't be what it is if it wasn't for you guys, so enjoy summer and keep the blues alive. Go to some nice live blues concerts, listen to your favourite blues albums or do whatever makes you happy. See you all when we're back. Best wishes from all of us to all of you!

Former Roomful of Blues vocalist and saxman Greg Piccolo was born May 10, 1951 in Westerly, Rhode Island. At the age of 13 he was playing sax with a six-piece rock band, the Rejects. Two years later he joined Duke Robillard as a vocalist for the Variations, a British Invasion cover band. Piccolo rejoined Robillard in 1970 to create the first incarnation of Roomful of Blues, inspired by Buddy Johnson's R&B band. The group was further modified in 1971 and Piccolo began playing sax. The band worked up and down the Northeast, gradually building up a national following. Robillard left the group in 1979 and was replaced by blues guitarist Ronnie Earl. By this time, Piccolo was the de facto leader. Dressed Up to Get Messed Up features a number of his compositions.

The group stayed together until the early '90s, when Piccolo went out on his own. Piccolo released two solo albums in an acid jazz vein, Heavy Juice on Black Top Records (1990) and Acid Blue (1995) on Fantasy. In 2000 he released Homage, a solo album that paid tribute to classic tenor players. During the new millennium he has remained active as a sideman, including playing with Jimmie Vaughan's Tilt-A-Whirl Band at live gigs across the United States. /Biography by Michael Erlewine, AllMusic

Johnny Neel, who lost his sight as an infant, began writing music at an early age, recording his first single at just 12 years old. Born in Wilmington, Delaware, he got radio airplay in the region as a teen and in the years to come developed a following for his Johnny Neel Band. A move to Nashville in 1984 brought him to studios and stages there, which in turn brought him to the attention of Allman Brothers guitarist Dickey Betts. Impressed by what he witnessed, Betts asked Neel to join his band on tour.

After hearing Neel’s contributions to the Dickey Betts Band’s 1988 album, "Pattern Disruptive”, Gregg Allman got the same idea, asking him to tour with The Gregg Allman Band, and finally with the reunited Allman Brothers. Neel not only played on the band’s “Seven Turns” album, released in 1990, he also co-wrote their hit comeback single, “Good Clean Fun”, along with three other LP tracks. The song went to No. 1 on Billboard’s mainstream rock chart.

Neel had a thriving solo career as well, with a dozen albums to his name, the most recent being 2012’s “Every Kinda' Blues... But What You're Used To”. He was also the owner of Straight Up Sound Studio in Nashville. When not writing, recording, or playing live, Neel was a session musician who contributed to songs by Gov’t Mule, Michael McDonald, Jeff Coffin, David Allen Coe, Suzy Bogguss, and other artists and acts. In 2019, the Delaware Rock & Roll Society inducted him into its Hall of Fame.

Personnel: Johnny Neel (vocals, keyboards, harmonica); Jack Pearson (guitar); Larry Chaney (guitar track 1); Tim Loftin (bass, backing vocals); Bob Babbitt (bass track 1); Dale Armstrong (drums, percussion); Craig Krampf (drums track 1); Dariush Rad, Etta Britt, Glenn Middleworth, Kelli Bruce, Vickie Carrico (backing vocals).

Note: Johnny Neel passed away October 7, 2024.

Born from a shared love of jumping 50s rhythm & blues, swing, soul and early rocksteady, Jump 66 have been getting crowds up on their feet since 2008. Laid down over a weekend at Gaz's alpaca farm in Welwyn outside London, this is Jump 66's first album of original material.

There are seven new tunes that the band have thoroughly tested on the road, alongside a handful of favourite cover versions. Getting the Jump 66 treatment are tunes from James Harman, Albert King, John Nemeth, and Eddie 'Cleanhead' Vinson, plus a jaw-dropping version of an old Blind Willie McTell acoustic blues played in an outrageously skanking dancehall style.

Personnel: Paul Kissaun (vocals); Rhod Davies (guitar); Paul King (bass); Gary Richardson (drums); Andy Burns (saxophone); Peter Saunders (keyboards).

Ghalia Volt - Burn The House Down

Wow! Ghalia Volt has been with us for a decade already. She begins her second decade working in yet another new configuration on her sixth album. The Belgian-born, ever-evolving, once one-woman band Ghalia Volt teams with fellow guitar slinger and producer JD Simo on Burn the House Down, the title exemplifying the blues rock she is known for. We’ve heard her absorb the New Orleans style of blues and perhaps are most familiar with her North Mississippi Hill Country style, first honed with Cody Dickinson, before she embarked on a couple of years of constant touring as the One Woman Band.

This time, she recorded in Nashville at the aptly named The House of Grease. Not only does Simo play the guitar, but he also engineered, produced, and mixed the album. Alongside them are the bass-drum tandem of Brian Allen and Chris Powell. All three are presumably working with Volt for the first time. This is as raw as a recording gets with the four of them playing in a single room. Unlike albums where the dual guitarists are featured one in each channel, they eschew that notion here, as the guitars bleed into each other. Both are credited with “guitars, slide guitar,” so it is impossible to determine who owns the riffs and leads. Interestingly, the album is void of extensive jams or solos, only the economical and crisp variety. The dual guitars are complementary, providing an energy surge without sparring with each other.

Volt wrote or co-wrote the eleven tunes, one aspect of the record that Simo did not participate in. Volt is not one to aim for perfection. She loves the raw edges, saying, “We’re not looking at a polished jewel, but more a raw diamond.” Simo’s production values follow suit, far more ‘dirty’ than ‘clean’. [---] Volt’s songs on Burn Down The House are perfectly designed for live performance, full of hand-clapping rhythms and sing-along choruses, songs that she can easily deliver in a power trio format, like her previous record, Shout Sister Shout. My guess is that is how she will tour the album. /Jim Hynes, Rock & Blues Muse

What is the soul of the blues? The Bluescats featuring Greg Copeland have set out to find it – and discovered that the journey is the destination. It’s not the answer that matters, but the search itself.

Greg Copeland, born in Virginia and now living in Hameln, Germany, began his career as a singer after serving in the US Air Force. Together with the Bluescats, he developed a program that explores the soul of the blues. The starting point of this musical journey is his rich, resonant voice: his very presence is impressive, but as soon as he sings the first note, you’re instantly transported back to the 1960s – a time when blues and soul dominated the charts. From velvety smooth to raw and gritty, Greg Copeland interprets the blues, always imbued with the spirit of soul.

The Bluescats – Jens Filser (guitar), Bernd Oppel (drums), and Till Brandt (bass) – once again demonstrate their knack for providing the perfect accompaniment for a guest artist. With a modern groove and a deep respect for tradition, they create the ideal setting to showcase Greg Copeland in all his facets. The program “The Soul Of The Blues” consists of half blues and soul classics and half original compositions written in collaboration with Greg Copeland. /Bluestown Music

A historic venue, a hometown crowd and one of Europe’s most electrifying blues bands. Live At Hotel Cecil captures Thorbjørn Risager & The Black Tornado at their most powerful - live on stage in Copenhagen. The album was recorded at Hotel Cecil, a historic venue in the heart of Copenhagen. Built in 1936, the building originally served as headquarters for the Danish women’s rights movement. Today its Art Deco atmosphere and smoky club vibe provide the perfect backdrop for an evening of blues, soul, and roots rock.

The recording took place during a sold-out concert on November 29, 2025, at the end of the band’s House of Sticks winter tour. That night, the eight-piece band delivered a performance that perfectly captured their powerful live reputation. “Hotel Cecil is intimate,” Risager explains. “It’s big enough to create a powerful sound, yet small enough to really feel the audience in the room. That pushes you to go deeper, both musically and emotionally.” The singer still thrives on the anticipation before stepping on stage. “I need that focus before a show. We approach every concert with respect. It’s not about recreating the record exactly - it’s about creating a moment that exists only that night. I hope people leave with more energy and feeling lighter than when they arrived.”

Live At Hotel Cecil features a strong mix of recent material and well-loved songs from the band’s catalog. Tracks like “Said I Was Hurt” and “House of Sticks” come from their 2024 studio album, while others - including the uplifting single “Hold My Lover Tight” - reach back to earlier releases such as Change My Game from 2017. Driven by a tight horn section, soulful grooves, and Risager’s unmistakable voice, the band has built a reputation as one of Europe’s most exciting live acts. Over the years, Thorbjørn Risager & The Black Tornado have become a major force on the international blues and roots circuit. The band has won four Danish Music Awards and was named Best Band at the European Blues Awards.

With more than 1,500 concerts worldwide and over 32 million streams, the group continues to reach new audiences. They have shared stages with artists such as Bonnie Raitt and Buddy Guy, while actor and blues enthusiast Dan Aykroyd has also expressed his admiration for the band. With Live At Hotel Cecil, the band shares a special hometown moment with fans around the globe. “Copenhagen is our home,” says Risager. “Having friends and family in the audience made that night even more special.” /The Blues Magazine

In this album, Ivan has written a picture through words and songs of his experiences traveling through local communities in Kimberley over a 20-year period. Charming to say the least. And I will present this footage in the not too distant future for your viewing pleasure. Born in Alexandria, Egypt and migrated to Perth in 1963, Ivan Zar was drawn to the Blues at an early age and taught himself the harmonica and Delta Blues style Guitar. In 1968, he formed his first band "King Biscuit Co", as well as writing his own songs. After playing in several bands, Ivan formed a band called The Elks in 1975, which was to introduce the Chicago style of Blues to the mainstream. The band toured the South West and across to major cities in the Eastern States. They had the opportunity to support B.B King, Rory Gallagher, Joe Cocker and Ike and Tina Turner, and recorded an album Refer to Drawer, which is now a sought after Australian Blues album by blues affeciandos. In 1981, Ivan recorded some of the material that he had written and worked in a duo with Brian Fitzgerald called The Deltatones. They worked in cafe's, folk festivals, small bars and supported John Mayall, Mick Jagger, John Hammond and Leo Kottke. In 1983, they recorded Me and the Devil as well as a cassette Harp of the West, which featured some of WA's most prominent harmonica players. Both of these recordings are also sought after blues fans alike. Going solo again, Ivan had the opportunity to play with such acts as The Black Sorrows, Paul Kelly, Bondi Cigars and Cold Chisel. From 1992-95, he opened The Bindoon Rock Festival and has been a part of Blues at Bridgetown since it's inception in 1993. During this period Ivan was busking in the streets of Northbridge every friday and saturday night - occasionally with other players. He also got the chance to start touring throughout outback WA, playing in pubs, Aboriginal communities, schools and many royal shows. 1995 saw the release of Ivan's first CD Track me Down, for which he received the 'Outstanding Recording Award' at that year's Blues at Bridgetown. In 1996, with John Wilson, he toured Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania. 1998 saw the release of Ivan's second CD Afrika Tide and he again toured the eastern states. While there he had the opportunity to record with some friends from Perth and came up with the next CD Ivan Zar's Deltatones. Back in Perth, a chance meeting in May 2003 with 13-yr-old Ben Witt saw the two working in local pubs and a live recording at the Perth Blues Club in June. They also performed at Bridgetown Blues in 2004 and 2006. Both Ben and Ivan were invited to be part of the West Australian showcase at Goulburn Blues Festival in NSW in 2007.

Together with organist Dirk Schaadt, with whom Jens Filser plays in his Organic Blues project, they wanted to return to the origins of the blues. This led to the idea of recording a CD consisting exclusively of Willie Dixon's compositions.

Willie Dixon decisively shaped the development of the blues in the 1950s and 60s. He was not only the house bassist at Chess Records in Chicago but also a veritable song factory for the artists signed to the label, such as Muddy Waters and Sonny Boy Williamson, to name just a few. However, it was bands like the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, and Eric Clapton who truly made his songs famous in the 1960s and 70s.

The Bluescats belong to the generation that thought "Bring It On Home" was a Led Zeppelin song, Jim Morrison was the Backdoor Man, and Mick Jagger was the Little Red Rooster. It took them a while to get to the roots and explore Willie Dixon and the many other blues greats of his generation. Brenda and Tommie inspired them in this search and shared their experience with them. The CD was recorded in a single day at Rockcity Studio in Solingen. The song selection, the arrangements – everything happened spontaneously, guided by a single principle: the sheer joy of playing the blues together.

Personnel: Brenda Boykin, Tommie Harris (vocals); Jens Filser (vocals, guitar); Till Brandt (bass); Bernd Oppel (drums); Ralf Grottian (harmonica); Bernd Winterschladen (saxophone); Dirk Schaadt (organ).

Kid Carlos is undoubtedly an emblematic musician. Introverted, unassuming, and an exceptional guitarist. He is only interested in his guitar and his music: the blues in its purest form. He is from Seville, in southern Spain and one of the cradles of flamenco, a place where the blues has its own river and from whose banks the blues first began to be heard in Spain. Carlos founded the Kid Carlos Band in 2007. and released his first album "Talkin' About The Blues" which is now out of print. After years of learning and life on the road, the legendary British blues producer Mike Vernon (who passed away on March 2) invited him to join his project The Mighty Combo, with whom he recorded two magnificent albums.

With his inseparable bandmates, vocalist Txaco Jones, bassist Lalu Cordón and drummer Stefano Di Rubbo, Kid Carlos band has released four albums and performed in clubs and festivals throughout Spain and across the rest of Europe. Together with Quique Bonal, another leading blues guitarist in Spain, he released the instrumental album "Fango" in 2018. Later, his friendship with the European harmonica legend Mingo Balaguer - a pioneer of the genre in Spain - led Balaguer to invite him to be the guitarist on his album "Blue Shadow", one of the best blues records released in Spain in recent years. Finally, Mike Vernon proposed a new project to Kid called Cat Squirrel. With the addition of Mingo Balaguer himself, they recorded a musical milestone titled "Blues What Am" which is already part of the essential canon of blues in Spain.

Carlos' most recent collaboration can be found on the 2025 album "We Like To Groove" by blues and boogie pianist Lluís Coloma and the also legendary saxophonist Lou Marini. There may be more tenacious guitarists than Carlos in Europe, but none capable of conveying their music with sincerity and generosity with which Kid Carlos plays his guitar. Don't look for it, you won't find it.

Personnel: Kid Carlos (guitar, backing vocals track 9); Txaco Jones (vocals); Lalu Cordón (bass); Stefano Di Rubbo (drums).

That Decca Records became the major blues label of the 1960's is basically down to the exhaustive efforts and enthusiasm of one man: Mike Vernon. Having joined the Artists & Repertoire Department of the company in November 1963 in a minor capacity, he progressively worked on his seniors until given the go-ahead to produce his first album, interestingly enough by one of the acts featured here: Curtis Jones. From this modest beginning Mike Vernon was eventually able to lure several 'name' Stateside blues men to 'The Supreme Record Company's' then head offices on London's Albert Embankment, for the purpose of inking a recording contract, and thereafter driving them to West Hampstead - Decca's studio complex.

Simultaneously, his was the influence which convinced some of Britain's finest home-grown exponents of the genre to follow a similar course. This package, aptly titled Raw Blues, was assembled by Mike and issued on Decca's subsidiary 'Ace Of Clubs' label in January 1967. /Excerpt from the liner notes by John Tracy

In an era where digital precision often replaces live performance, the Delta Generators - comprised of frontman/vocalist/harmonica player Brian Templeton, guitarist Charlie O’Neal, bassist Rick O’Neal and drummer Jeff Armstrong - are moving in the opposite direction. Their latest album, On & On, is built on a simple premise: real musicians, playing live, capturing moments as they happen. Unlike many modern recordings, On and On was reportedly written, arranged, and recorded in an unusually short window - just over a week from start to finish. The result is a record that prioritizes feel over polish. Guitarist Charlie O’Neal has emphasized that the process was intentionally unstructured. Rather than chasing a predetermined sound, the band allowed songs to evolve naturally in the studio.

While the band is rooted in blues traditions, their sound reflects a broader set of influences. O’Neal’s admiration for players like Albert Collins and B.B. King is evident, but so is the group’s connection to rock energy and dynamics. That duality - blues as structure, rock as momentum - has helped define the band’s identity within the Boston music scene and beyond. The addition of vocalist and harmonica player Brian Templeton marked a turning point for the band. A longtime fixture in blues and roots music, Templeton brought both stage presence and songwriting depth. His arrival helped elevate the band from a strong regional act into something more cohesive and dynamic.

Despite multiple recordings, the Delta Generators remain a live-first band. Their philosophy is straightforward: connection with the audience matters more than technical perfection. That mindset carries through On & On, which captures the immediacy of a live performance rather than the precision of a heavily edited studio production. At a time when much of the industry leans toward digital refinement, the Delta Generators offer a counterpoint. Their approach is less about innovation and more about preservation - holding on to the core elements that made blues and rock resonate in the first place. That clarity of purpose gives On & On a distinct identity: unfiltered, collaborative, and grounded in musicianship.

How does a 19-year-old kid raised in Vicksburg, Mississippi, play his first gig in Chicago and wind up with 165,000 views and 4,000 shares of his performance on Facebook? Well, if you are Harrell ‘Young Rell’ Davenport, who started playing harmonica and guitar at seven years, the answer is easy: he is a rising star in the blues world. A dexterous and inventive guitarist and a fat-toned harmonica phenom, Young Rell is already a commanding vocalist and a poetic and poignant songwriter. Whether he is accompanying himself on guitar while playing harmonica on a rack and singing, or alternating between guitar and harmonica with an ensemble, Young Rell sings his songs with sincerity and without a hint of affectation, working the stage with the poise and charisma of a veteran performer.

A prolific and engaging presence on social media, Young Rell has created a global community of fans and followers who have not only praised his talent but engaged enthusiastically with him on the subject of musicianship, musical instruments and past generations of famous and obscure blues inspirations. As a child, Rell navigated personal struggles and trauma by immersing himself in music that was born in response to oppression and hardship. He found solace studying and expressing himself in the blues.

His community building and graceful social interaction have landed him relationships and experiences with the greatest blues artists alive today. He has been championed by Billy Branch, Kingfish Ingram, Bob Margolin, Bernard Allison and many others. He has already performed at the Notodden Blues Festival, King Biscuit Blues Festival, both of Morgan Freeman’s Ground Zero Blues Clubs in Mississippi, Red’s Juke Joint in Clarksdale, and many more. He has also been nominated twice by Blues Blast Magazine for the Sean Costello Rising Star Award (2024 & 2025) and once by SPAH for the Bernie Bray Harmonica Player of The Year Award (2025).

10. Money (7:07)
11. Moondog Boogie (3:23)

Former Roomful of Blues saxophonist Greg Piccolo stretches his musical wings even further on this, his third solo outing since leaving the group in 1990. In addition to his brawny tenor sax wailings, Piccolo also plays lead guitar (in a crude, but effective style somewhat reminiscent of Roy Buchanan and Carlos Santana) and alto sax this time around, coaxing acid-jazz sounds out of the latter instrument.

With his regular working combo Heavy Juice providing stellar support in a multiplicity of styles (Piccolo jumps from swing to bop to acid jazz to soul ballads and even a taste of rock'n'roll on this one) and 14 Karat Soul providing backup vocals on "Money" and the title track, Red Lights is Greg Piccolo's most musically ambitious album to date. /Cub Koda, AllMusic

Eddie Kirkland - Pick Up The Pieces

8. I've Got To Leave Your Town (7:10)
9. I'm A Stranger (5:43)
10. Pick Up The Pieces (6:41)

By 1980, when he made this album, Eddie Kirkland was already a blues legend. That was little help to him, since legend or not the blues was in one of its perennial quiet periods. When JSP boss John Stedman came across him in a New York club, it turned out that Eddie was not only looking for a record deal, but he had a set of songs ready for release.

Here's the result - the sides from an LP that has never before been transferred to CD and, for the first time, some tracks that didn't (for space reasons) make it onto the original album. This is hard blues by a master who's seen it all. If the business is in a trough, so what - the man still gives of his best. The previously unreleased material is from a different session - a little funkier and with a fascinating alternative version of the title song.

5. My #1 Son (8:10)
6. Let's Straighten It Out (11:21)
7. You Don’t Have To Go/Bright Lights Big City/Going To New York (13:05)

Carlos Johnson, Chicago's most talented blues guitarist, and Hideaki Tanaka, a guitarist who was influenced by Carlos's playing, have collaborated closely on this collaborative album. Chicago guitarist/singer Carlos Johnson has served as Otis Rush's right-hand man since his 2004 stroke, and his passionate performances as a solo artist have earned him immense support from Japanese blues fans. Admired by Otis Rush, he embarked on a musical career. In 1999, Japanese guitarist Hideaki Tanaka moved to Chicago, where he was deeply inspired and influenced by seeing Carlos perform live, and spent four years there.

This album showcases the direct connection between these two, master and disciple. From the instrumental opener "I Wonder Why," a signature Otis classic that Carlos inherited, to the closer, Jimmy Reed's "You Don't Have To Go," which Carlos also featured on a previous live album, the two engage in a lengthy conversation through guitar. The resulting album is both relaxed and intense.

14. Back On My Stompin' Ground (5:28)

Joe Bonamassa’s The Spirit Of Rory: Live From Cork stands out as one of the most authentic blues-rock tributes of 2026. Recorded in Rory Gallagher’s hometown, the album captures the emotional depth, technical brilliance, and raw live energy that defined Gallagher’s legacy - reimagined through Bonamassa’s signature guitar style. Recorded live in 2025 in Cork, Ireland - Rory Gallagher’s hometown - the album captures the energy of three sold-out shows. But more than that, it documents a moment where legacy, place, and music come together.

Performing in Cork adds emotional depth to the project. Bonamassa and his band honor Gallagher’s legacy with faithful interpretations, while injecting their own intensity and musical voice. “I never had the honour to meet him, but his music looms large in my life,” Bonamassa explains. Introduced to Gallagher at a young age, his connection to this music runs deep. What started as an invitation from the Gallagher family quickly grew into something bigger. “The very thought frightened me,” Bonamassa admits, “but I felt honoured to be asked.” Rather than reinvent the material, he chose a different path: “The best I could do was approach his catalog with humility and reverence.”

Since his passing in 1995, Rory Gallagher’s influence has only grown. His raw, uncompromising guitar style inspired generations of players across blues and rock. Artists like Slash, Johnny Marr, The Edge, Brian May, and James Dean Bradfield all cite Gallagher as a defining influence. This release shows why that influence still matters today - not as nostalgia, but as living music.

Featuring standout performances of Cradle Rock, Bad Penny, and A Million Miles Away (the album’s focus track), the release moves across the full spectrum of Gallagher’s catalog. From the explosive energy of Walk On Hot Coals and Bullfrog Blues to the emotional depth of A Million Miles Away, Bonamassa delivers performances that balance power with respect. A particularly special moment comes with As The Crow Flies, performed on Gallagher’s own 1930 National Triolian resonator guitar, loaned by the Cork Public Museum. /The Blues Magazine

Dr. Feelgood was the ultimate working band. From their formation in 1971 to lead vocalist Lee Brilleaux's untimely death in 1994, the group never left the road, playing hundreds of gigs every year. Throughout their entire career, Dr. Feelgood never left simple, hard-driving rock & roll behind, and their devotion to the blues and R&B earned them a devoted fan base. That following first emerged in the mid-'70s when Dr. Feelgood became the leader of the second wave of pub rockers. Unlike Brinsley Schwarz, the laid-back leaders of the pub rock scene, Dr. Feelgood were devoted to edgy, Stonesy rock & roll, and their sweaty live shows - powered by Brilleaux's intense singing and guitarist Wilko Johnson's muscular leads - became legendary. While the group's stripped-down, energetic sound paved the way for English punk rock in the late '70s, their back-to-basics style was overshadowed by the dominance of punk and new wave, and the group had retreated into cult status by the early '80s.

Brilleaux (vocals, harmonica), Johnson (guitar), and John B. Sparks (bass) had all played in several blues-based bar bands around Canvey Island, England before forming Dr. Feelgood in 1971. Taking their name from a Johnny Kidd & the Pirates song, the group was dedicated to playing old-fashioned R&B and rock & roll, including both covers and originals by Johnson. John Martin (drums), a former member of Finian's Rainbow, was added to the lineup, and the group began playing the pub rock circuit. By the end of 1973, Dr. Feelgood's dynamic live act had made them the most popular group on the pub rock circuit, and several labels were interested in signing them. They settled for United Artists and released their debut, Down by the Jetty, in 1974.

According to legend, Down by the Jetty was recorded in mono and consisted almost entirely of first takes. While it was in fact recorded in stereo, the rumor added significantly to Dr. Feelgood's purist image, and the album became a cult hit. The following year, the group released Malpractice - also their first U.S. offering - which climbed into the U.K. Top 20 on the strength of the band's live performances and positive reviews. In 1976, the group released the live album Stupidity, which became a smash hit in Britain, topping the album charts. Despite its thriving British success, Dr. Feelgood was unable to find an audience in the States. One other American album, Sneakin' Suspicion, followed in 1977 before the band gave up on the U.S.

Sneakin' Suspicion didn't replicate the success of Stupidity, partially because of its slick production, but mainly because the flourishing punk rock movement overshadowed Dr. Feelgood's edgy roots rock. Wilko Johnson left the band at the end of 1977 to form the Solid Senders; he later joined Ian Dury's Blockheads. Henry McCullough played on Feelgood's 1977 tour before John "Gypie" Mayo became the group's full-time lead guitarist. Nick Lowe produced 1978's Be Seeing You, Mayo's full-length debut with Dr. Feelgood. The album generated the 1979 Top Ten hit "Milk and Alcohol," as well as the Top 40 hit "As Long as the Price Is Right." Two albums, As It Happens and Let It Roll, followed in 1979, and Mayo left the band in 1980. He was replaced by Johnny Guitar in 1980, who debuted on A Case of the Shakes, which was produced by Nick Lowe.

During their first decade together, Dr. Feelgood never left the road, which was part of the reason founding members John Martin and John Sparks left the band in 1982. Lee Brilleaux replaced them with Buzz Barwell and Pat McMullen, and continued touring. Throughout the '80s, Brilleaux continued to lead various incarnations of Dr. Feelgood, settling on the rhythm section of bassist Phil Mitchell and drummer Kevin Morris in the mid-'80s. The band occasionally made records - including Brilleaux, one of the last albums on Stiff Records, in 1976 - but concentrated primarily on live performances. Dr. Feelgood continued to perform to large audiences into the early '90s, when Brilleaux was struck by cancer. He died in April of 1994, three months after he recorded the band's final album, Down at the Doctor's.

The remaining members of Dr. Feelgood hired vocalist Pete Gage and continued to tour under the band's name. Former Feelgoods Gypie Mayo, John Sparks, and John Martin formed the Practice in the mid-'80s, and they occasionally performed under the name Dr. Feelgood's Practice. Wilko Johnson was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2013 and was expected to live no more than a year, but he responded well to surgery and returned to music in 2014, continuing to perform and record up until his death on November 21, 2022 at the age of 75. /Biography by Stephen Thomas Erlewine, AllMusic
