“I joined the British rock band Supertramp back in 1985 following the release of Brother Where You Bound, an album that featured a long David Gilmour guitar solo on the title track," says Verheyen. "My job was to perform something comparable on tour, tall shoes to fill. We first met backstage at the Royal Albert Hall during one of our week-long stints there. Spiral Glide, [on the new album] is my tribute to Gilmour, a true English gentleman and lifelong inspiration.”

The album features bassist Dave Marotta, drummer John Mader and keyboard player Jim Cox, from Verheyen's touring band, as well as contributions from Big Big Train drummer Nick D'Virgilio and Chad Wackerman.

08. Mustang Run (4:39)
09. Fourth Door On The Right (4:51)
10. Spirit Of Julia (4:20)
11. Last Days Of Autumn (4:07)

About Mustang Run Starting with ""Taylor's Blues,"" an up-tempo blues shuffle, the listener is drawn in by the familiar yet unique take Verheyen has on this age-old form. This is followed by a tone poem, ""Julietta and the St. George,"" which begins as a classical acoustic guitar and piano duet that evolves into a funk groove. Next is a straight-ahead jazz-fusion song called ""Fusioneers Disease"" featuring Simon Phillips on drums. Verheyen's soaring melody on ""Last Days of Autumn"" calls to mind Jeff Beck's more sensitive side, while the deep groove on ""Amandola"" supports a melody that sticks in the mind long after it's over. Says Carl, ""There are so many guitar shredder records out there, but if I buy them I tend to listen once and file them away. I wanted to make a melodic statement on a record that would bear repeated listening for years to come."" Being with Supertramp for so many years, Carl has played ""Bloody Well Right"" 1,000 times or more. On this, the only vocal tune on the album, he reworks it with a swampy treatment on slide guitar and fellow Supertramp member John Helliwell on sax. The music really ramps up as Carl's ode to coffee drinking called ""Riding the Bean"" gets underway. Featuring the amazing Stu Hamm on bass, the song's outro connects to the title song's intro via an impromptu studio jam improvised right on the spot. The haunting melody of ""Mustang Run"" features a wild solo outing from electric violinist Jerry Goodman. Chad Wackerman and Jimmy Johnson, a rhythm section that works for such diverse artists as Allan Holdsworth and James Taylor is featured on ""Fourth Door on the Right."" This up-tempo jazzer also features saxophonist Bill Evans. On this and every other tune, Carl's unique brand of improvising is presented with the gorgeous tones he's known for. The CD closes with ""Spirit of Julia,"" a soul-baring blues lament in the style of Ray Charles' deepest church-inspired hymns, bringing us full circle back to the bluesy language that began the record

With Scott Henderson, Joe Bonamassa, Steve Morse, Rick Vito, Robben Ford, Albert Lee, Jim Cox as guest artist, there is a lot of great playing to listen to on this album! It is a treat to hear these great guest players trade off solos with Verheyen, and especially fun since they all have very unique styles. My favorite is probably Bonamassa and Henderson's appearances - some wickedly tasty licks and lines happening there by both the guests and Carl!

There are a couple of songs that are a bit dull and boring, but the rest of the tracks make up for that. Lots of great tunes. By the way, Carl sings really good too, this was a pleasant surprise! Great voice. ~DolphinStreet

Mike Sponza & The Central Europe Blues Connection - 2 albums: Kakanic Blues / Kakanic Blues 2.0

Blues, soul e rock’n’roll are the key words to describe Mike Sponza, guitarist, singer and composer, on the European blues panorama since early 90’s. A lifetime commitment to develop a personal style, contemporary and rich of different flavours. Original tunes and detailed arrangements are the main ingredients of Mike’s music. In the last years Mike Sponza established his name on the international scene with his discographic projects and his performances, showing the great vitality of Italian blues from a new point of view.

Since his discographic debut in 1997, Mike did a long road, not only on the artistic side: international festivals, club gigs and cooperations catalyzed the attention of blues audiences on his vision of a contemporary European blues, which is not afraid of purists’ opinions as well as avoiding overseas stereotypes.

In 2005 Mike Sponza started the project “Kakanic Blues” the first Central European blues initiative: a cd and a dvd have been released under the name “Central Europe Blues Convention” with some of the most outstanding musicians of this area and guitar legend Carl Verheyen, as special guest. The project has been reviewed worldwide with a strong interest for the musical results as well as for the cultural, social and political background, where musicians find a common language and understanding in the blues. In 2008 the cd “Kakanic Blues 2.0” has been released with the participation of 25 musicians from Italy, Austria, Slovenja, Croatia, Serbja, Hungary, Ireland, Great Britain, USA, including as special guests the great Ian Siegal and Carl Verheyen.
