Arthur Crudup may well have been Elvis Presley's favorite bluesman. The swivel-hipped rock god recorded no less than three of "Big Boy's" Victor classics during his seminal rockabilly heyday: "That's All Right Mama" (Elvis' Sun debut in 1954), "So Glad You're Mine," and "My Baby Left Me." Often lost in all the hubbub surrounding Presley's classic covers are Crudup's own contributions to the blues lexicon. He didn't sound much like anyone else, and that makes him an innovator, albeit a rather rudimentary guitarist (he didn't even pick up the instrument until he was 30 years old).

Around 1940, Crudup migrated to Chicago from Mississippi. Times were tough at first; he was playing for spare change on the streets and living in a packing crate underneath an elevated train track when powerful RCA/Bluebird producer Lester Melrose dropped a few coins in Crudup's hat. Melrose hired Crudup to play a party that 1941 night at Tampa Red's house attended by the cream of Melrose's stable: Big Bill Broonzy, Lonnie Johnson, Lil Green. A decidedly tough crowd to impress -- but Crudup overcame his nervousness with flying colors. By September of 1941, he was himself an RCA artist.

Crudup pierced the uppermost reaches of the R&B lists during the mid-'40s with "Rock Me Mama," "Who's Been Foolin' You," "Keep Your Arms Around Me," "So Glad You're Mine," and "Ethel Mae." He cut the original "That's All Right" in 1946 backed by his usual rhythm section of bassist Ransom Knowling and drummer Judge Riley, but it wasn't a national hit at the time. Crudup remained a loyal and prolific employee of Victor until 1954, when a lack of tangible rewards for his efforts soured Crudup on Nipper (he had already cut singles in 1952 for Trumpet disguised as Elmer James and for Checker as Percy Lee Crudup).

In 1961, Crudup surfaced after a long layoff with an album for Bobby Robinson's Harlem-based Fire logo dominated by remakes of his Bluebird hits. Another lengthy hiatus preceded Delmark boss Bob Koester's following the tip of Big Joe Williams to track down the elusive legend (Crudup had drifted into contract farm labor work in the interim). Happily, the guitarist's sound hadn't been dimmed by Father Time: his late-'60s work for Delmark rang true as he was reunited with Knowling (Willie Dixon also handled bass duties on some of his sides). Finally, Crudup began to make some decent money, playing various blues and folk festivals for appreciative crowds for a few years prior to his 1974 death. ~Bill Dahl

In 1946, 'So Glad Your Mine' reached No 3 and 'Ethel Mae' made it to No 4. 'That's All Right' was cut in September 1946 doing only modest business at the time. Later it would be taken up by Elvis Presley, who made it a national hit. Crudup had arrived. Disputes over royalties caused him to avoid the recording studio, but he became a valued performer - never short of work but always, it seemed, short of money.

In the year of blues, amid the Martin Scorsese films and their requisite 30 CDs of material, other labels with substantial blues holdings got in on the act to (over)saturate the market. The good news is that a lot of material came out on CD for the first time, interesting anthologies abounded, and even the harder to find works by major and mid-level artists came to the fore. Worried Life Blues is just such a collection from BMG's massive Bluebird vaults. These 16 recordings are a who's who of the pre- and WWII era (only one cut, "Sweet Little Angel" by Tampa Red, was recorded after 1948). From Sonny Boy Williamson's "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl," Big Maceo's "Worried Life Blues," Bessie Smith's "Downhearted Blues," and Leadbelly's "Midnight Special" to Tommy Johnson's "Canned Heat Blues," Big Joe Williams' "Baby, Please Don't Go," Big Bill Broonzy's "Keep Your Hands Off Her," and Alberta Hunter's "Beale Street Blues," this collection runs the gamut of prewar blues. There are a couple of real surprises here, tracks not usually included on blues compilations -- though they should be: Robert Petway's "Catfish Blues," Lil Green's "Why Don't You Do Right," St. Louis Jimmy's "Goin' Down Slow," and Johnny Moore's Blazers read of "How Blue Can You Get." In all, this is a fine-sounding, well-compiled set with great notes by no less than Colin Escott. ~Thom Jurek

Around 1960, Arthur Crudup retired from music and became a manager of itinerant labor, driving workers from Florida to and from Virginia. This was interrupted briefly by a trip to New York to record an album (Mean Ole Frisco) for the Fire label, issued in 1962, just prior to the firm's bankruptcy. Following up on a lead from Big Joe Williams, Delmark sent a letter in care of the postmaster in Forest, Mississippi, Crudup's birth town. The letter was forwarded to his new Franktown address and in ealy 1967 Delmark received a reply which indicated Arthur Crudup was alive and willing to re-enter the recording studio. Crudup was brought to Chicago and appeared on the University of Chicago's 1967 Rhythm and Blues Festival. A first session in May was held with bassist Ransom Knowling for accompaniment. The session was so succesful that a full album might have been issued from this material alone, but Delmark producer wanted a bit more of variety. So a second session in June took place with guitar player Edward El, bassist Dave Myers and drummer Judge Riley. This date also came off very well and so we have here an album that presents Big Boy Crudup in two settings, reminiscent of his Bluebird days and an idea how he sounded on the King Biscuit Flour Show with Elmore and Sonny Boy.

Soon after Crudup's return in music, he was managed by Dick Waterman, who booked a few concerts and club appearances on the East Coast, including a concert in Central Park with Buddy Guy and Junior Wells and the Ann Arbor Blues Festival. This second Delmark album is made up of material recorded during Crudup's first session with Ransom Knowling and a some material from a data with the eminent Willie Dixon. On that session, Crudup was his usual relaxed self, letting the blues come through his guitar and voice, as he used to say, "right out of the sky".

Arthur ‘Big Boy’ Crudup was a Mississippi Delta blues guitarist, singer and noted songwriter who was often known as “The Father of Rock ‘n’ Roll”, because even in the early ‘40s he was playing in a style which unmistakeably provided many of the essential roots of the musical revolution that was still more than a decade distant. He wrote classic songs like “That’s All Right Mama”, which became Elvis Presley’s first commercial recording, and other songs covered by Elvis like “My Baby Left Me”. He was a vital bridge between acoustic country blues and the electrified urban sound he developed after he hoboed his way to Chicago, and was among the first blues artists to play with bass and drums accompaniment. This great value 94-track 4-CD collection comprises all the records he made which were commercially released during the period covered by the anthology, encompassing his recordings which came out on the Bluebird, RCA, Checker, Trumpet, Champion, Groove and Fire labels. It gives a thorough and entertaining overview of the two key decades of his primary recording career.

Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup - Father of Rock n Roll 1941-1947

Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup (1905-1974) was a Delta blues singer, songwriter and guitar player, but in his early life he lived and worked throughout the South as a migrant worker. He sang gospel before he began his career as a blues singer in Clarksdale, Mississippi. He learned playing the guitar in 1937, at age 32. He traveled around the South, playing street corners, houseparties and juke joints. After visiting Chicago in 1939 he decided to stay, but he barely made a living as a street singer. According the legend Crudup lived for three weeks under a railway bridge because he had no money for a train ticket. On the street he was accidentally heard by talent scout Lester Melrose, who hired him to play music at a party in Tampa Red's house. Crudup played songs by his idols Big Bill Broonzy and Tampa Red without knowing that they were present at the party. On the advice of Tampa Red Melrose signed the singer for the Victor label and the rest is history. His songs "Mean Old 'Frisco Blues", "Who's Been Foolin' You" and "That's All Right" were popular in the South. Some of his songs were recorded by Elvis Presley at the Sun studios. Crudup stopped recording in the 1950s because of further battles over royalties. He realised his songs made some people very rich and he stayed poor. Crudup returned to the South, worked as a laborer and bootlegger. In the mid 1960s he recorded again for the Fire label en Delmark Records. In 1970 he toured in the UK and recorded "Roebuck Man" with local musicians. In March 1974 he died from complications of heart disease and diabetes.

This is great, but Big Boy Cruddup's original recordings (a major influence on Elvis) were on RCA's race label Bluebird Records, and have been compiled on RCA. Those dated from the 1940's. This Tomato release features mono re-recordings from the early 1960's on Fire Records. This is a satisfying CD, but just a word of warning if you expect the RCA's. ~Mark Schlesinger

When Muddy Waters declared that the blues had a child and they named him rock & roll, he knew exactly what he was talking about -- rock & roll was very much an outgrowth of the blues. Country, jazz, and gospel all influenced early rock & roll, but the blues were the most important influence of all. And no discussion of rock & roll's blues heritage would be complete without some mention of Chicago, which is where many of the songs on When the Sun Goes Down, Vol. 4: That's All Right were recorded. Not everything on this 72-minute compilation (which spans 1939-1955) was recorded in Chi-Town, and not all of the artists had a Windy City address -- in the '30s, '40s, and '50s, Southern bluesman sometimes traveled to Chicago to record. But it is safe to say that Chicago-style blues is a high priority and that all of the artists helped pave the way for the rock & roll revolution of the '50s -- artists like Memphis Slim, Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup, Tampa Red, Roosevelt Sykes, and Big Maceo Merriweather. This disc has its share of songs that became standards, including Merriweather's "Worried Life Blues," Austin Powell's "I'd Rather Drink Muddy Water," and Crudup's "That's All Right" (which became a hit for Elvis Presley in the '50s). Other highlights of the disc range from Lil Green's 1941 version of Joe McCoy's "Why Don't You Do Right" (which Peggy Lee didn't embrace until 1943) to Little Richard's 1951 recording of "Get Rich Quick." The latter is downright fascinating. Although "Get Rich Quick" was recorded four years before Richard's commercial breakthrough and isn't as guitar-oriented as his subsequent work, he already had a recognizably flamboyant vocal style. Blues and rock & roll enthusiasts are both advised to give this fine CD a close listen. ~Alex Henderson

Best known for "That's All Right" and two other songs covered by Elvis Presley, bluesman Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup was born in Forest, Mississippi. Crudup visited Chicago in 1939 as a member of the gospel group The Harmonizing Four and stayed to work as a solo artist but was not successful. Record producer Lester Melrose allegedly found him living in a packing crate. He toured the country in 1948 with Sonny Boy Williamson II and Elmore James. Throughout his career Crudup recorded for Victor, Ace, Checker, Trumpet, Bluebird, Trumpet and in the 60s Delmark. This session was recorded November 10, 1969 and features Jimmy Dawkins and Willie "Big Eyes" Smith. Crudup's guitar was amped through the same rotating Leslie speaker that Buddy Guy used on Junior Wells' Hoodoo Man Blues (Delmark 612) for seven of the nine songs here. There's also a nice talk section between Crudup and producer Bob Koester.
