I just can't believe that so little has been written about this - yes, well - unpretentious masterpiece. Just a craftsman with an impressive voice and quite a personal history having a good time with two talented fellow-musicians . The pianist and the bass-player create a most respectful frame for a singer who sings gospel, blues, rock `n roll, etc. as if he invented the genres himself. He does not even have to do his best. At least that's what it sounds like. He actually breathes music. I envy the ones who were actually in the audience that night. Willy is so relaxed, so much on top of his game that in between songs he fools around with his fans. The atmosphere in the concert hall is therefore warm, relaxed and friendly. No wonder, they must have felt that they were witnessing a most memorable performance. The sound quality is perfect. Put it in your cd-player at home, close your eyes and try to believe that you are listening to an artist who once upon a time performed in Berlin. You won't be able to believe Willy Deville has died since. Well, anyway, his music is still alive and kicking.

Jan Douwe Kroeske is a Dutch program maker and presenter of television programs, but he is also regularly heard on the radio.

He started his career in music at the beginning of the 1980s as a disc jockey at Bar Dancing De Mac in Harderwijk and from the second half of the 1980s presented programs for the successive VARA, RTL 5 , Kink FM and Teleac.

However, Kroeske became best known with its series of music programs under the name Twee Meter De Lucht In and 2 Meter Live on Kink FM. Twee Meter De Lucht In was broadcast on Radio 3FM until the end of the 90s. There is also a television version of the program, 2 Meter Sessions. The formula of the program is that artists record a session especially for Kroeske, an acoustic version of their songs.

For years it’s been available in bootleg quality only, but now the Cologne label MEYER RECORDS is rereleasing the recording professionally. Mr. Heart & Soul has seldom sounded so poised and soulful – a master at his very best. The lineup of instruments nearly defines the performance’s subsequent character. Grand piano, upright bass, dobro, acoustic and electric guitars provide an intimate setting and frame Willy DeVille’s unforgettable voice just right. Willy needs nothing else. Another good thing about this recording is that it gives this deep and highly emotional musician plenty of space to tell his stories. Willy has always been a good story-teller, but during this concert, performed in Berlin, he was unusually chatty. Almost every song has its own anecdote. The record producers were smart enough to leave room for these, and this lends the recording a unique quality.
