Allman Brothers Band founding member and drummer, Butch Trucks, joins jam band Great Caesar’s Ghost for an evening of improvisational rock, blues, and jazz. Butch has been the “Freight Train” that has driven the rhythm section of The Allman Brothers band for the past 45 years. Great Caesar’s Ghost is a jam band that is celebrating it’s eleventh year of playing original and varied styles of music including the music of The Allman Brothers Band and The Grateful Dead. Hittin’ The Note Magazine wrote this about Great Caesar’s Ghost: ” ......Every now and then a band comes across our radar that has that rare ability to ‘hit the note.' It is even more rare for us to come across a band that can play the Allman Brothers' music so well that it gets our attention. Great Caesar's Ghost is such a band."

Great Caesar's Ghost - Dragonfly (2 Disc Set)

The most telling part of Great Caesar's Ghost's new double album, "Dragonfly" (Great Caesar's Ghost) is that when the Bridgehampton-based jam band moves from its version of the Rolling Stones' "Sympathy for the Devil" into the album's title track, it's practically seamless.

The same goes for the move from "Dragonfly" into the Grateful Dead's "St. Stephen," which also includes a bit of the Allman Brothers Band's "Mountain Jam." Guitarists-vocalists Bosco Michne and Larry Schmid show how the band plans to carry on, following the death of guitarist Ray Penney in 2012, while keyboard player Keith Hill, drummer Ed DiCapua and newcomer bassist Klyph Black maintain a solid groove.

"Better Off Dead" represents some of the best versions of Grateful Dead songs by the band Great Caesar's Ghost that have been recorded over the past six years. Many of these tracks appear on GCG's other three CD's: "Live at Berkner Hall with GE Smith", "One More Ride", and "Means To An End". All of these CD's have been heard coast to coast on xm/sirius radio. Great Caesar's Ghost is not a cover band nor a tribute act and do play a great deal of their own original music. "Better Off Dead" is what a lot of people have been asking for: all the DEAD covers together in one place....so here they are!!

"To play the music of the Allman Brothers Band, and play it well, you need chops and technique and first-class musicianship, but you also need more than that. There is a spirit to their music, a feeling that it creates in both the performers and the listener when it's done properly. Original ABB bassist Berry Oakley had a term for those magical moments when the universe aligns and everybody is feeling the music. He called it "hittin' the note."

At Hittin' The Note magazine, every now and then a new band comes across our radar that has that rare ability to "hit the note." It is even more rare for us to come across a band that can play the Allman Brothers' music so well that it gets our attention. Great Caesar's Ghost is such a band.

It's not that they copy the Allmans' music exactly. Considering that the ABB themselves never play a song the same way twice, that would be pointless. Rather, they embody that same spirit of joyous communion that makes the original versions so special, while still putting their own stamp on them. So their version of "Les Brers" has a Marshall Tucker-ish flute solo where one of the guitar solos would be, for example, but it still respects the original in every way.
