Barrence Whitfield And The Savages are back after a 5 year hiatus with a new LP titled Glory on FOLC Records that was recorded in Valencia Spain in May 2023 at the completion of a long Euro tour. Much of the material was written and developed on this tour. The Savages are now in their 40th year of recording and this LP is a genre bending pile driver that has the same energy as their self titled LP from 1983. The band features original line-up core members Barrence Whitfield, Peter Greenberg and Phil Lenker along with Andy Jody and Tom Quartulli who have been with the band a dozen years.

The LP was produced by Mike Mariconda and the Savages were joined on this recording by Spencer Evoy on Baritone Sax. The Savages most recently had a successful run of recordings on Bloodshot Records, having re-grouped in 2010. They continue to unleash their distinctive brand of rock & roll that mixes up a cocktail of soul, blues and garage. It is timeless and highly recommended! /Sonic Rendezvous

When Barrence Whitfield and the Savages came blasting out of Boston, Massachusetts in the early 1980s they brought the world exactly the kind of high-octane rhythm and blues (with a little rock’n’roll on the side, just for good measure) of which it was in desperate need. The impact of their all-action live shows was reinforced by a trio of albums that scythed through the sterility of a studio and served up a very close approximation of what you could expect from them on stage. They still do, for that matter.

After their initial onslaught, Barrence and the band took a 22-year break, reuniting after Ace had reissued their first independently produced album to great acclaim. It’s gratifying to know that we were instrumental in helping them get their groove back – and obviously to great effect, as they are still together and releasing great albums. The guys are currently putting the finishing touches to a new one for release on Chicago’s Bloodshot Records. For now, though, we’re delighted to bring together on CD their first two albums for Rounder Records: “Dig Yourself” and “Call Of The Wild”, both first issued in the mid-1980s.

Barrence and the Savages still perform many of the songs featured on these two albums in their current live set, including Don Covay’s ‘Rockin’ The Mule Back In Kansas’ and their own ‘Stop Twisting My Arm’, ‘Big Mamou’, ‘Juicy Fruit’ and the ever-popular floor-filler ‘Bloody Mary’. Both albums still sound as vibrant and essential as they did when recorded more than 30 years ago. It’s worth noting that “Dig Yourself” has surprisingly never been released anywhere in the world on CD before, while “Call Of The Wild” is being reissued for the first time in its original running order.

Barrence Whitfield & The Savages - 2 albums: Ow! Ow! Ow! / An Audiotree Live Session

A Boston-based singer of what one might refer to as "traditional" R&B (i.e.,'50s- and '60s-style), Barrence Whitfield is the owner of one incredible pair of lungs and limitless energy and enthusiasm for his music. A soul screamer in the spirit of Little Richard, Wilson Pickett, Solomon Burke, and early Don Covay, Whitfield & the Savages, though never breaking big nationally, are a great cult act, a triumph of substance over style, with a bunch of terrific records to boot.

Whitfield (real name Barry White, no joke!) came to Boston from New Jersey in the late '70s to attend Boston University. Prior to college, he'd spent time singing in an assortment of ill-fated hard rock, disco, and even progressive rock bands, never really singing the soul music he grew up loving. His move to Boston was a way of putting (at least temporarily) his musical past behind him. He had no intention of starting another band; his focus was on college. That was until he fell in with a bunch of Boston musicians led by ex-Lyres guitarist Peter Greenberg, who shared Whitfield's love of raging soul and R&B. After hearing Whitfield sing, Greenberg was convinced they'd found the best voice in the city and Barrence Whitfield & the Savages were born.

A specially extended reissue for the 1984 album Barrence Whitfield And The Savages. Originally released on the Mamou label, this enhanced edition, co-ordinated by the album's producer (and Savage guitarist) Peter Greenberg, almost doubles the original album's 30 minute playing time.

Tracks 14 and 15 are out-takes from the original album, while tracks 16-18 are previously unreleased earlier recordings, and tracks 19-23 are live recordings.

The album's release in 1984 led DJ Andy Kershaw to pronounce it the greatest rock 'n' roll record he had ever heard. He brought the band to the UK and Robert Plant and Elvis Costello could be seen grooving at gigs. /Amazon

Since the mid-'80s, Barrence Whitfield has dedicated his life to reminding people that rock & roll and rhythm & blues are not separate but equal institutions, but healthy branches of the same tree; on-stage or in the studio, Whitfield howls vintage R&B tunes with the fury of a hot-wired rock band, and belts out vintage-style rock with a healthy portion of swagger and soul. In Whitfield's world, it's all loud and furious, and makes you want to dance, and really, who doesn't want some of that in their life? After a detour through other projects, Whitfield resurrected the Savages in 2011, and 2015's Under the Savage Sky, the group's third album since returning to duty, stands proudly alongside mid-'80s landmarks like Dig Yourself and Ow! Ow! Ow! as a master class in souped-up and full-bodied roadhouse rocking. Whitfield turned 60 not long after this album came out, but you'd never guess by listening to it; he can still shout with the best of them, and if he isn't always subtle, he's not here for introspection but to get the dancefloor shaking, and that's what he does anytime he steps to the mike. And the band -- guitarist Peter Greenberg (also one of the group's primary songwriters), bassist Phil Lenker, drummer Andy Jody, and saxman Tom Quartulli -- roars just as loud and proud as the frontman, conjuring the glorious sound of a crowded bar in full celebratory mania on a Saturday night. The production captures the raucous sound of the Savages' live show with good and greasy accuracy, and when Barrence sings "It's no sin to lose control," he's neatly summed up what's great about this band -- and this album.
