The Hipshakers started as a five piece blues band in 1988. Reforming in 2011, on stage whether as an acoustic duo or with a band the dual frontman chemistry between Blake & Counsel is irresistible. This album is the first volume of the Legendary Gilbert Place Sessions recorded live on a four track Tascam Cassette Porta-Studio on January 24 1988. Only a stereo cassette mix remains, transferred and mastered at 96k, 24bit, this amazing set of 12 songs sounds as fresh and exciting as the day it was recorded. The album is dedicated to HipShakers guitarist Gordon Leach (28/11/1956 to 22/11/2021).

London's Premier Blues outfit The Hipshakers features Adam “BottleNeck” Blake on guitar and vocals and Steve “BluesHarp” Counsel on Harmonica and vocals. “BottleNeck” Blake is an amazing lead guitarist in the great British Blues Boom tradition completely at home in the Chicago style whether it be the slide style of Elmore James and JB Hutto, or the lead and rhythm styles of such Chicago greats as Jimmy Rogers, Magic Sam and Otis Rush, he is also a major exponent of the acoustic delta blues slide style of Mississippi Fred McDowell as well as a wide gamut of Blues greats. As a long time sideman in the Errol Linton Blues Vibe, Blake has toured extensively and recorded several notable albums.

However it is within his partnership with “BluesHarp” Counsel that Blake really excels, sharing center stage affords Blake the opportunity to “wow” audiences with his gritty and evocative vocal prowess interlaced with raw, jaw dropping, bone picking, no nonsense guitar licks. Steve “BluesHarp” Counsel was also born and raised in London but lived and worked in the states for over 20 years before moving back to London in 2011. In the 90's he formed and led the infamous Los Angeles Blues band the Homewreckers. A critically acclaimed CD produced by Kim Simmonds of Savoy Brown was released on New York's Viceroy Records in 1994 called "Out Of The Shadow's," it was also released in Europe though Viceroys German based subsidiary and Rough Trade.

Ira Robbins in New York Newsday described Counsel as a “Harmonica Powerhouse” and recently Counsel was described by Mike Rimmer in Cross Rhythms Magazine (UK): "Counsel blows a mean harp ...vocally he sounds like a young Van Morrison spitting out the words here with a raspy soulful passion". Together Blake and Counsel bring a wealth of experience and a love of the blues that is infectious and both pleases and excites the purest and the casual blues listener alike. On stage whether it is as an acoustic duo ala “Sonny & Brownie” or in the Hipshakers electric line up echoing the dual front-man approach of “Junior and Buddy” the chemistry between these two musicians is irresistible.
