One of the pleasures of traveling around the U.S. is listening to bar bands in out of the way dives. Whether you're in Oregon, Georgia, Colorado, or Pennsylvania, a good bar band may not be cutting-edge, trendy, or experimental but can win you over with its infectiousness and its sense of fun. One such bar band is Dr. Hector & the Groove Injectors, whose Emergency makes you feel like you've wandered into a cool dive somewhere in Middle America.

People who heard this 1991 release tended to place it in the blues-rock category - and, to be sure, "Downtown Drinking" "14 Carat Fool," and "Bad News" are catchy examples of blues-rock. But many of the other tunes are best described as roots rock with a strong southern soul influence. Tracks like "Southern Fried Groove" and "Don't Be Afraid" give the impression that Dr. Hector & the Groove Injectors have spent a lot of time listening to Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Sam & Dave, and other southern-style soulsters who were big in the 1960s.

And, in fact, Dr. Hector & the Groove Injectors are a southern band; Emergency was recorded at King Snake's Sanford, FL studio. Although not the most original album in the world, Emergency is easy to enjoy if you have a taste for earthy, unpretentious bar bands. /Alex Henderson, AllMusic

Today, blues and R&B music are no longer the preserve of working class African Americans and, although the city of Memphis itself has changed, the influence of its legendary performers can be heard in the recordings on this cd. The selections here, taken from the current generation of blues and R&B artists, represent the best of the new era of Memphis Music.

Although they are continuing the traditions of artists such as B.B. King, Howlin' Wolf and Sonny Boy Williamson, these artists sing new songs with new voices; however, the intertwined threads of anguish and joy, agony and celebration are still present, as they in the primitive blues that W.C. Jacksonville, Florida-based Dr. Hector & The Groove Injectors have a reputation for being a fantastic road band, a throwback to some of the great Southern rock bands of the 60's and 70's. This is not surprising since guitarist Dru Lombar served for 10 years as the leader of the Southern rock band Grinderswitch, along with his work as a songwriter and session player for Capricorn Records in Macon, Georgia, working with some of the immortals of Southern rock. However, unlike their rock predecessors, Dr. Hector & The Groove Injectors make their living playing blues and R&B.

The latest CD from former Grinderswitch frontman, Dru Lombar, and his hot rocking band, Dr. Hector & the Groove Injectors arrived in 1998. With lots of good ol' rock & roll soul, a massive dose of rhythm & blues, and some infectious guitar playing, Cure for the Common Groove hits the spot better than an Alka Seltzer after a huge Mexican dinner. This is a disc that begs, no, demands to be heard time and time again. Set the repeat button on the disc changer, sit back and groove. That's what the doctor orders. It'll heal your afflictions, for sure. Celebrating ten years of red-hot recording, the CD includes tracks from previous Dr. Hector offerings such as "14 Carat Fool," co-written by Lombar and King Snake label chief and producer, Bob Greenlee, or "Pickin' the Blues," an Elmore James favorite that showcases Lombar at his guitar pickin' best. Cure rocks its way through the opening cut, an original electric blues number called "Risky Business," and gets downright funky with a saxophone-laced rendition of the J.D. Loudermilk composition "Bad News." "Safe in Your Arms Again" is a stone-cold blues throw-down that will have everyone closing their eyes and swaying from side to side like a Ray Charles wannabe while pretending to play some blues air guitar. R&B takes over with "I Wonder Where I'm Going to Sleep Tonight," and then carries on with the theme, with an almost Motown-sounding "Can't Take No for an Answer." One of the best tracks on the record is the energized "Two Strong People," a cut with all the heart and soul of an Ike & Tina Turner romp. "Emergency" closes out the 18-song set with Lombar tossing in some Duane Allman-influenced slide guitar over yet another excellent beat and lyric. Dru Lombar has one of the finest voices in Southern music, and his guitar playing is always right on the money. Cure for the Common Groove is just what the doctor ordered.
