Three big-city guys playing a 21st century version of country blues, Daddy Long Legs showed they knew how to kick up a down-and-dirty ruckus on great early albums like 2012's Evil Eye on You and 2014's Blood from a Stone. However, after moving from scrappy Norton Records to the larger and better-financed Yep Roc label, the band have been faced with the dilemma of how to make a more polished recording that will appeal to a larger audience without washing away the sweat and blood that made them memorable in the first place. Daddy Long Legs hadn't quite worked that out on their first Yep Roc LP, 2019's Lowdown Ways, and though they still haven't figured out all the details, 2023's Street Sermons does a noticeably better job at delivering the best of both worlds.

Producer Oakley Munson has tightened up the band and buffed off a bit of the distortion that made Daddy Long Legs sound so gritty, while getting more energetic performances out of the group than they delivered on Lowdown Ways. Lead singer Brian Hurd (aka Daddy Long Legs) bellows with potent ferocity on these tracks, and his harmonica work wails hard, especially on the Stones-influenced "Been a Fool Once" and the rollicking "Rockin' My Boogie." Guitarist Murat Aktürk doesn't get his leads as far up in the mix as Hurd, but he sounds commanding when he gets the chance to step forward, especially when his slide work pushes his amp into the red, and drummer Josh Styles keeps the beat just lively enough to keep the performances interesting without losing focus on the backbeat that powers it all.

The trio aim for a jug band vibe on "The Ding-Ding Man," and they wisely brought in Lovin' Spoonful legend John Sebastian to play guitar on the cut. On "Silver Satin" and "Nightmare," the credits say Wreckless Eric is one of the folks singing backup, though he's not readily audible in the mix, and having the good sense to get him involved certainly speaks well of the participants. Daddy Long Legs' best-recorded work has been the least fussed with, where the band just set up their gear and drew sweat in front of live mics. If Street Sermons is more elaborate than that, the sound still honors the interplay of the musicians and the taut power they generate together, and that's why it works. /Mark Deming, AllMusic

Lowdown Ways marks a quantum creative leap for Daddy Long Legs, the scrappy New York trio known for their stripped-down roots sound and in-your-face intensity thats garnered them fans in their hometown and overseas, where theyve toured with such kindred spirits as The Damned, Blackfoot Gypsies, Hurray for the Riff Raff and the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. They've been recognized by Rolling Stone, who aptly compared them to Chicago blues fired at the moon, played by the demented children of the Pretty Things.

This expansive, new territory that the band covers on Lowdown Ways is thanks to producer (and JD McPherson bassist) Jimmy Sutton, with whom the band recorded the album at Chicagos Hi-Style Studios, applies his technical know-how to broaden the sound of such instantly memorable tunes as Pink Lemonade (co-written by McPherson), Ding Dong Dang and Bad Neighborhood, which resonate with the down-and-dirty roots that have always been Daddy Long Legs inspiration. Meanwhile, the band ventures successfully into unfamiliar territory with the pub-rock-style Winners Circle, the bittersweet acoustic ballad Back Door Fool and the dramatic album-closer Wrong Side of the River.

From the esteemed Norton Records label comes one of the wildest and most exciting groups of the current roots and blues revolution. Daddy Long Legs-named for its harp-blowing, blues-bellowing frontman, is a blues hollerer who blurs any definition by age or color. He growls, barks, yelps, and wails without sounding like an imitation of anyone or anything. This is simply pull-the-cord-and-let-the-snot-fly blues.

His partners in crime are cut from the same sweat-and-whiskey-soaked cloth. Guitarist Murat Akturk cranks out everything from powerhouse country blues rhythms to slinky-assed multi-stringed slide riffs that bump and grind up against Daddy Long Legs’ harp. Drummer/percussionist Josh Styles keeps it simple and right on, sometimes locking in with his bandmates for a triple-punch deep-as-Hell-itself groove; other times head-down and leading the charge himself, slamming shovelfuls of coal into the beast.

The resulting gutsy, rocking blues spans the gamut from the churning romp of the album opener “Death Train Blues” to the nasty hoodoo stomp of ''Evil Eye'' that closes things down. Yeah, you’ve heard players bring the train into the station before – but by the time Daddy Long Legs wrestles the thing to a halt, everyone’s covered in sweat.

Their ''Evil Eye On You'' LP was definitely not an attempt to domesticate the sound of Daddy Long Legs in a studio setting; the twelve cuts are wild and wooly and real. Infuse a few hisses and pops into the tracks and it would be easy to believe this music was recorded a few decades ago, but no – Daddy Long Legs is happening right now, boys and girls.
