Jimi "Primetime" Smith is likely the only person who can say that he was homeschooled on guitar by Jimmy Reed and Eddie Taylor. He is also one of the few guitarists on the present scene who learned early on how to accompany blues pianists such as Sunnyland Slim and harmonica players such as Big Walter Horton. Jimi Smith is simply not one to blow his own horn, crafting his own carreer in a remarkably humble and preserverant manner.

Jimi “Primetime” Smith came from the heart of the Maxwell Street blues scene — the son of influential blueswoman Johnnie Mae Dunson, he learned guitar from Jimmy Reed as a teenager, and performed with scores of blues artists at major clubs and festivals. Blues harmonica master and producer Bob Corritore has gained a strong presence in today’s blues market by releasing a solid output of music from his storied “Vaults” as well as current gems. Bob been teaming with Jimi since reconnecting in Arizona seven years ago, and this album documents their musical adventures so far — lots of good, rowdy blues fun from these modern day Chicago blues masters! These Chicago veterans deliver a collaboration of hard-hitting, real-deal blues! The son of veteran Chicago blues songwriter Johnnie Mae Dunson, Jimi "Prime Time" Smith checks in with a live album recorded at Blues Alley in Minneapolis, MN on two nights in 1998. Kicking off with a jazzy instrumental, Benny Golson's "Killer Joe," Smith immediately shows us that he's no Stevie Ray Vaughanabee, spraying tight licks over a loose framework that allows the whole band to breathe as one. A Jimmy Reed-styled original, "You for Me," is up next, with a guest appearance on harmonica from Tom Burns.

A slow blues dedicated to Albert Collins (his "If Trouble Was Money") shows off Smith's fretboard firepower, while "Tipping" and "Walkin' the Dog" - the latter featuring a guest turn from Brother Jack McDuff - show off the band's funk and jazz sides. Other highlights include his mother's "When You're Doin' Alright" (originally recorded by Jimmy Reed), Luther Allison's "Soul Fixin' Man," Albert King's "I'll Play the Blues for You" and the Mar-Keys' "Last Night." Jimi Smith was born into a musical family in Chicago and came under the tutelage of blues legend Jimmy Reed. Jimi gained an invaluable education in his younger years, playing guitar with Reed and with many of the bands and blues players around the Midwest. He relocated to Minneapolis at age nineteen and has been a integral part of the Twin Cities music scene ever since. Joining several solid local and national acts sharpened his playing and songwriting skills and now fronts his own band - Blazin'.

This 12 song CD is peppered with his fine blues originals in a wide scope of grooves. Two songs were penned by his songwriter/drummer mother, Johnnie Mae Dunson. Jimi is ably assisted here in the studio by several long-standing friends and bandmates to assemble this fine collection of straight-ahead rockin' blues. Jimi Smith has the classic touch on guitar and vocals and plays inspirational mainstream American roots blues.
