The range of styles included here - pretty much covers every blues form (except the country, bottle-neck variety) and handsomely showcases Arsen?s talents. His throaty yet smooth vocals particularly impress. His piercing, rapid-fire guitar runs a gamut of inflections from funk to jazz to CW, while never straying outside the borders of the blues itself. This CD also represents an evolution in his tone which now sports an unmistakable twanginess in both the upper and lower registry (check out the licks on track #4). Throughout, Arsen is ably supported by Bek Mamyshe on drums and Aslan Zhantuyev on bass. Arsen and his band spent over a decade honing their craft as bluesmen.

Arsen Shomakhov, is a Maple Blues Award-nominated guitarist and singer-songwriter with a Russian background. He is an electrified blues artist who is really committed to roots music. But he also does not shy away from the related musical styles. Arsen had status as a blues-dedicated virtuoso musician in his native Russia and reached the International Blues Challenge (IBC) in Memphis in 2005. He also won the new talent competition at the King Biscuit Blues Festival in Helena, AR in 2007. After his moving to Vancouver, BC in 2008, Arsen formed the Arsen Shomakhov Trio together with bass player Bruce O'Neill and drummer Chip Hart. He is truly an international artist who is now also conquering Europe and the US outside of Canada. Arsen's album "On the Move", released in the US in 2010, reached number two in America and a top ranking in Canada in the airplay charts of Roots Music Report. The release reached the top 25 of "Blues Albums of The Year" worldwide. In the same year, the Toronto Blues Society nominated Arsen for the Maple Blues Awards. Arsen Shomakhov Band went to Memphis to represent the White Rock Blues Society at the IBC in 2014 and 2016, and progressed to the semi-finals. The third album "Dynamic" was released in August 2014. Now there is "Rain City Blues". For this, singer / guitarist Arsen went with drummers Alexander Pettersen (track 1-5) and June Core (track 6-10) to Kid Andersen’s Greaseland Studio in San Jose, CA. The ten original songs diverge like never before. Kid is not only responsible for the production, but is once again becoming a true instrumentalist. The kick-off is given with the handsome blues shuffle "Full-Time Lover". Special guest Aki Kumar immediately comes into the spotlight with his blues harp. "No More" is an exciting piano jump boogie-woogie song and contrasts with the soul-sensitive "Sunset Beach" and the deep groove from "Woman and Whiskey". A quick trip to the West Coast for the swinging "Strolling In San Jose" and then head north for the Chicago blues driven "Rain City Blues". From the funky "Boogaloo!", Which is full of wah wah pedal tricks, the quick goes to the instrumental "Three Arrows" and the jazzy "Sitting On A Fenche". The concluding "Little Bird" is a fine example of dobro virtuosity. Let the party begins! ~Philip Verhaege

The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming! Not only the title of the 1966 comedy featuring Jonathan Winters, Carl Reiner and Alan Arkin, it now stands for the country's latest export - the blues. One of the leading exponents of Russian blues is guitar player, singer and songwriter Arsen Shomakhov. Shomakhov fronts the blues band Ragtime, who are one of the leading acts on the Russian blues scene.

The blues band Ragtime (after the E.L. Doctorow novel) was formed in 1991, and the band first participated in the St Petersburg Neva Delta Blues Festival, which in 2001 led to a series of gigs at the best blues venues in Moscow. In April of 2002, the band released their debut album, "Heavy Steppin'", which led to gigs at venues such as the legendary B.B. King Club in Moscow.

The album received good press and has enjoyed international and national (Russian) airplay. In May of 2003 the band received an award at the All-Russia Spring 2003 Blues Festival in Moscow, and was invited to participate in early September 2003 in the first International Moscow Blues Festival.

Personnel: Arsen Shomakhov (guitar, vocals); Aslan Zhantuyev (bass); Sultanbek "Bek" Mamyshev (drums).

Arsen Shomakhov - 2 albums: Dynamic / On The Move

Arsen Shomakhov, known foremost as a virtuoso guitarist, exploded into the blues music scene in the early 2000s. His club tour to Moscow in 2002, managed by the Russian Blues Internet Community, received good press and was covered on a Jazz and Blues Program on Russian TV. His quick ascension from the provincial periphery to the top of the metropolitan blues scene resulted from his talent and skill honed in rehearsals and performances in Nalchik, Russia with his first band, ‘Ragtime’.

In January 2005, he made his way to the International Blues Challenge semi-finals held in Memphis, TN. The next year brought his debut album, released on Blues Leaf Records in the US. In October 2007, after competing at the Arkansas Blues & Heritage Festival with other blues bands from around the US, Arsen was chosen as the winner in the “Emerging Artists” category!

Apart from his mastery of the guitar, Arsen is noteworthy for his vocals and songwriting. He feels good within the blues framework while exploring adjacent spheres, stylistically ranging from funk to rockabilly to hard-rock. As for the blues itself, some of his songs sound like they were composed in the Mississippi Delta a long time ago. Arsen’s interpretation of blues cover songs and old-time hits are not only dusted off and fresh, but pleasantly surprising in a most unusual way! He makes them his own.
