Boogie-Woogie is the original blues played on the piano, only faster and perhaps more technically demanding. One person who can explain it in more detail and, above all, play it is ALEXANDER BLUME from Thuringia. Alongside Jürgen Kerth, Waldemar "Waldi" Weiz and Lutz Kowalewski, he is the fourth outstanding man of the Thuringian blues scene, from which the Blume family also comes.
He was already sitting at the piano at the age of 8, he played music early on in the legendary Eisenach jazz club and was a musician in the Travelling Blues Band at the age of 16. That was in 1977. A year later, Stefan Diestelmann brought him to Berlin to join his FOLK BLUES BAND, with whom he recorded two of Diestelmann's three LPs. Although the third album "Folk, Blues & Boogie" was not officially released on vinyl due to Diestelmann's departure to West Germany (only a cassette was delivered), a few copies were saved from destruction and found their way to interested collectors.
After the FOLK BLUES BAND disbanded, ALEXANDER BLUME moved to Big Joe Stolle's group ZENIT, where he perfected his playing. In 1985, "Dr. Blues", the first studio album by the ZENIT group, was released by AMIGA. Since 1985, ALEXANDER BLUME has also worked as a freelance music teacher. In the same year, he began studying at the Berlin "Hanns Eisler" Academy of Music, but gave this up again in 1986 for political reasons. One year later, his first solo LP "Boogie Woogie Piano" was released by AMIGA, which already at that time established him as one of the best musicians on this instrument and in all things boogie woogie. In 1988, ALEXANDER BLUME founded his first band, the INTERCITY BLUES BAND. Here he worked again with Big Joe Stolle, with whom he had already played in ZENIT. With this band, Blume released the album "Reflection in Blues" in 1990. In 1992, he and his wife founded a private music school where, as a music teacher, he passed on his knowledge, skills and credo to his students. From 1995 onwards, guest tours took him to the USA, Sweden, Lithuania, the Czech Republic and Turkey, among others.
Blume founded the ALEXANDER BLUME JAZZ FAMILY in 1998. Here he played together with his sons Michael (bass), Maximilian (drums), Cornelius (trumpet), Daniel (clarinet, saxophone) and the trombonist Gunter Mlynski. Another band he founded is the ALEXANDER BLUME TRIO, which he launched in 2003. Here he plays together with his son Maximilian on drums and Andreas Buchmann on bass. The trumpeter Daniel Hofmann also plays occasionally. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, ALEXANDER BLUME also worked with other musicians, for example with Jana Wiesenthal, Rüdiger Feuerbach and Postel & Pötsch.He also left his mark on the Weimar KASSETURM JAZZBAND.
The last project founded by ALEXANDER BLUME is the ICELAND BLUES BAND, which was founded in 2007. In addition to Blume (piano), this formation also included Daniel Hofmann (trumpet, flugelhorn), Wieland Götze (drums), Christian Patzer (saxophone) and Ole Rausch (guitar). Since the 2010s, Alexander has mainly performed with his son Maximilian, who often have other guests, e.g. Bernd Kleinow or Andreas Buchmann. In 2012, father Alexander and son Maximilian released the album "In & Out (Vol. 1)", followed in 2018 by "In & Out (Vol. 2)". Since 2017, the group ZENIT has also been back, and Alexander is once again a member of its line-up. He can also be seen live with them again.
