Although the 24 selections on this CD have been reissued under pianist/vocalist Charles Brown's name, he is actually the featured sideman with Johnny Moore's Three Blazers, a band also including guitarists Johnny Moore and Oscar Moore, plus bassist Eddie Williams. However, putting it under Brown's name is only fitting because he has vocals on all but one of the selections (the instrumental "Scratch Street") and is the most impressive soloist. These performances, cut for the small Los Angeles-based Exclusive label, are mostly little-known (making them formerly rare collector's items), and the set overall has more tempo and mood variation than the earlier classics; the band was not trying as hard to duplicate the success of "Driftin' Blues." On Sugarcane Revival, (May, 2015) Mississippi native, Beth McKee offers fiery-sweet songs of tenacity and purpose, sung to a deep southern groove. The resulting sound is a composite of the places she’s called home; Mississippi, Texas, Louisiana and Florida.

Downbeat Magazine’s four-star review states that Beth “honors blues, r&b, gospel and Southern rock traditions just as surely as she gives them contemporary voice in her fresh-as-a-Gulf-breeze music.” Living Blues describes Sugarcane Revival as a “superb album of introspective Gulf Coast roots music” and New Orleans Offbeat says “This is accessible music with real substance.” The appeal of her honest vocals and roots-y piano style was evident on McKee’s previous solo albums, Next to Nowhere (2012) and I’m That Way, the 2010 tribute to Chess Record’s Louisiana legend Bobby Charles. McKee used the albums to establish a solo career after her 1990s success with New Orleans-based MCA Records act Evangeline. Bobby Charles was so impressed with Beth’s interpretations of his songs that he asked her to sing with him on his own record, “Timeless,” which would be the last before his death. “Bobby Charles mastered simplicity and universal truth in his songs; Beth was his favorite interpreter of the bared-soul truth his songs communicated,” says Jim Bateman, Charles’ longtime manager. “Everything she does taps into that universal thread that everyone understands without thinking.”

A working pianist from the age of 14, Beth Mckee’s musical identity began catching wind once she moved to Austin, Texas. After some time spent playing in bars and blues bands, Beth was recruited by Greg “Fingers” Taylor to join his band and embarked on a tour opening for Jimmy Buffett. Afterwards, Beth moved to New Orleans to join Evangeline and the group was quickly signed to Buffett’s MCA Nashville imprint, Margaritaville Records. Beth released two albums with the group before setting off to create her own musical legacy.

The band's 4th release "Basically Blue" is a collection of the band's favorite tracks from the previous 3 Georgia Blues Dawgs Cds. Guitarist David T. states: "I think this collection is the best representation of the music I envisioned when I started the band. I think every track on this Cd is pretty strong. It is a fun album to listen to while driving down the road. Mike lays down some cool grooves which uplifts the tracks.

Joining David T. on this release are bassist Steven Taylor and drummer Mike Haid. Mike has performed and recorded with some of the world's most accomplished musicians including; Ray Gomez (Stanley Clarke), Oscar Cartoya (Spyro Gyra), Steve Wood (Kenny Loggins), Kirk Covington (Tribal Tech, Allan Holdsworth, Joe Zawinul), Gus G, and countless recordings as a session drummer. Mike is also currently a major reviewer for Modern Drummer magazine. Steven Taylor is mainly a session player who has appeared on a few of David's other releases most notably "Rock Solid Guitar." The Georgia Blues Dawgs are a showcase for Southern Georgia Blues with a touch of rock that will leave everyone wanting more.

Baby Isaac – the band, was formed in 1992 by Gary Arnott (vocals & harmonica), Eddie Eugster (vocals & keys) and Derek Welsh (guitar). The catalyst was a shared love of blues and roots music, but also witnessing Paul Lamb & The Kingsnakes performing at the local ‘Kelty Rock Club’. Authenticity was a key factor in developing the Baby Isaac sound – it was all about the feel, and the natural, energetic performances.

Angela Moore came to the band’s attention around 1995, as being an incredibly talented local singer. Angela was offered to join, initially only having a few songs of her own to perform. Very quickly, the band added many more songs to the repotoire that allowed Angela to come to forefront of each performance. She took the reins and has never looked back since.

Jimmy Reed made a comeback in the mid-'70s before passing away, and was not the Jimmy Reed of his heyday. These cuts, featuring a lot of newly "written" material, sound like the old stuff but not as fresh or potent. In fact, listeners will easily be able to identify which of these "new" tunes closely resemble specific well-known hits. Still, it's Jimmy Reed, the sweet, simple, easygoing bluesman playing the relaxed and loping music he is instantly identified with. If anything, his voice is noticeably diminished and the harmonica is out of tune, on the sharp side. The short-shrift CD runs just a tad under 37 minutes, but those who love Reed will likely still want it. ~Michael G. Nastos

These tracks sound like reissues -- the Crown Prince of Dance's gruff baritone is unusually strong for a guy his age -- but these are actually new recordings cut with many of the musicians and vocalists from Stax' heyday, including Mabon "Teenie" Hodges, Carla Thomas, and Michael Toles. This endearing set is blues-based with an ample helping of '50s R&B thrown in. As recordings go, it's a keeper; some highlights are Thomas' rendition of Ike Turner's R&B classic "Rocket 88," as well as some true-to-the-genre blues wails à la "Just Because I Leave, That Don't Mean I'm Gone" and energetic jumps like "Fool for You Mama." ~Andrew Hamilton

A masterful comeback album from a blues and soul veteran who was assumed to be ready for the retirement home. Rufus Thomas went back to the comic blues that had been his forte in the 1950s, and the edge in his voice and defiance in his tone proclaimed that he wasn't finished yet. After years of taking heat from purists for not issuing enough "real" blues albums, Alligator didn't get nearly enough credit for being the only label to give Rufus Thomas a fair shot in the 1980s. ~Ron Wynn

André Christovam is a noted Brazilian bluesman. His first group was Fickle Pikle in the late '70s. As guitarist and composer, he recorded in that period with Kid Vinil e os Heróis do Brasil. Studied in the Guitar Institute of Technology of Los Angeles, played with Rita Lee (participating in Flerte Fatal, 1987), Raul Seixas (Panela do Diabo, 1989), and Marcelo Nova (Blackout, 1991). He became a solo artist in the '80s, recording the first individual album in 1989 (Mandinga, Eldorado). Followed A Touch of Glass (1990) and The 2120 Session (1991), recorded in Chicago with American musicians. In the '90s he formed the André Christovam Trio with drummer Athos Costa and bassist Izal de Oliveira (replaced by Fábio Zaglanin in 1996). The trio recorded the CD Mississippi Saxophone in 1996. In that year, they performed with Carlos Santana in his Brazilian tour. In 1997, they released Catharsis. ~ Alvaro Neder

Med inspiration i denne periode og i vores egen blege skandinaviske baggrund, har vi skrevet et par håndfulde originale sange, som vi blander med nogle af de gode gamle klassikere fra perioden.

Peps Persson - The Week Peps Came To Chicago (2 CD Edition)

Peps Persson was probably the most important artist in introducing blues to Sweden in the late '60s and early '70s. Since then he has had a reputation of being mainly a blues artist, but his discography shows a much wider range, including Afro-pop, reggae, R&B, and folk. Peps Persson is most easily recognized by his full and trembling voice, and his extreme deep south (Swedish) dialect that gives him a wide selection of words and rhymes. In a peculiar way it also helps him to adapt Swedish to blues music, a thing not many have mastered. In 1966, Peps Persson formed the group Downbeat Crowd and released a cover of Muddy Waters' "Got My Mojo Working" as a single.

The first LP, Blues Connection, was released 1968 on Gazell and the name of the band was now Linkin' Louisiana Peps. The coming few records were released on Sonet, a label he would keep to for most of his career, and followed a traditional blues and R&B formula. The Week Peps Came to Chicago was recorded in Chicago 1972 with Sunnyland Slim, Carey Bell, Mighty Joe Young, The Aces and Jimmy Dawkins.

While Charlie Musselwhite has always been an adventurous musician -- take into consideration his fine Cuban inflected Continental Drifter, the Americana drenched One Night In America, and the rollicking rock and soul on Sanctuary -- the Delta of his upbringing has never been left out of the mix entirely. Musselwhite may have had a reason to dig so deeply into the hard-edged roots of Delta by way of Chicago blues on this set: he lost both his parents in 2005. The CD booklet is filled with pictures of the sites of his life in Mississippi. Delta Hardware was recorded with Musselwhite's road band, and it has the feeling of motion along with its looking into the past. Guitarist Chris "Kid" Andersen, bassist Randy Bermudes, and drummer June Core hop into the heart of the electric trancelike blues that have been a part of Musselwhite's backbone his entire performing career. Delta Hardware is a raw, squalling album heavy on brittle guitars, trancelike rhythms, and of course, Musselwhite's harmonica filling the gaps where his world-weary voice shouts, hollers, and bellows. Musselwhite and band dig deep here. The set opens with the strolling minor-key rock & roll blues of "Church Is Out," where Musselwhite offers an autobiographical sketch with boasts worthy of Jay Z. This shimmy shaking electric blues is merely a portent of things to come. On the track that follows, "One of These Mornings," all hell breaks loose. A call and response between Musselwhite and Andersen shuffles like a train off the track to Core's triple-time drums. When he sings, it's more like a roar; unfettered, full of power and the grit necessary to wail above a band playing their asses off. His harp solo is just a scorcher, and it all happens in two-minutes-and-thirty-seconds. "Sundown" is a classic one-four-five shuffle, but with dueling slide guitars popping over the top of Musselwhite's voice. The blunt edge of the blade comes home to roost on "Black Water," where Musselwhite, his harp, and Andersen's guitars are a wandering band of prophets from the old testament warning of the perils of the present age; Musselwhite sounds sad but determined; he's unflinching in his terror-vision and it is bleak. The music is sad as well; it's trancelike, Junior Kimbrough-styled -- repetitive, percussive, snaky -- and when it's time for his brief harp solo, the instrument sounds like it's weeping. Little Walter's "Just a Feeling" is just plain slow and mean. It's a swampy moaner and Andersen's guitars are like fine forged steel with a serrated edge. When Musselwhite digs into his spoken word bag over the tough-assed blues as on the opener and "Invisible Ones," there's not a second that doesn't work. His jeremiad is pure working-class poetry. There is proof in the pudding too, where the crowd expresses its appreciation for the hip-shaking "Clarksdale Boogie," recorded at Red's Juke Joint in that very town. Delta Hardware is the kind of record only a veteran could make, full of backbone, spit and vinegar; it is an early candidate for blues record of the year. -- Allmusic.

The textbook charge usually levelled against Alligator sessions are that they're sanitized. You couldn't lodge that one against this set with a straight face; if anything, somebody turned Sonny Terry loose. It didn't hurt that Johnny Winter was around on guitar and piano, playing gritty blues with a passion. It didn't help that Terry didn't put any amplified muscle behind his harmonica, however. Sandeep Hunjan: I'm an English-born, British singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and recording artist of Indian origin, living in America for half my life. Much of my writing flows in the vein of blues, but my diverse musical influences also embrace Americana, alternative, rock, jazz, electronica, making it impossible for me to stick to a specific genre and impossible to peg me down. Tom Principato has spent the last 40+ years as a guitarist and singer based in his hometown of Washington, D.C. In the 1970's, Tom was leader of the legendary band Powerhouse, an East Coast phenomenem who released an album "Night Life" to critical acclaim. Tom Principato Band "Live in Europe 1988" captures a particularly inspired night in Germany performed during the years when Tom and his band first became prominent in Europe and the U.S. in the mid-1980's, through the world-wide release of their first two albums "Smokin'!" and "I Know What You're Thinkin'..." Most of the material here is live versions and sometimes extended renditions of material from these two albums such as "Blue Lights", and the Band's enormously popular take on Sonny Landreth's "Congo Square" (recorded years before the Neville Bros. and John Mayall),as well as some vintage blues and R&B chestnuts such as Albert King's "Cold Women With Warm Hearts", a smoking version of Tiny Bradshaw's "Well Oh Well", and a re-working of Louis Jordan's "Saturday Night Fish Fry".

Connie has been recognised as one of the finest Blues singers in the Uk today. The winner of “Best Female Vocalist Uk” no less than five times has earned Connie her place in the Gallery of Greats, alongside Alexis Corner and Eric Clapton to name just two. Her incredible stage presence and powerful vocal have also been recognized overseas as she was twice voted “European Blues Vocalist of the year” by the “Blues Trophies Awards” Pride of place is her award from the people of Liverpool for “Performing Arts”....and is still being nominated.

Connie grew up in Liverpool and was singing in her church and school choirs from the age of 5 yrs. Singing was never a career option, nor did Connie wish to until she met and married Bass Player Terry Harris who persuaded Connie to step on stage. Since that first night, Connie decided she never wanted to leave. Together they have shared that stage since. Connie burst onto the blues scene making her debut at the “Great British R&B Festival at Colne and never looked back.

Performing in over 30 countries, Connie has wowed audiences in Europe and from Moscow to LA. Some of the more memorable occasions included: In New York at the famous “Bitter End” Recording at “Cotton Row” Studios Memphis, with the great Teenie Hodges known for his work with Al Green, whom Connie later met at his church. And of course singing at BB Kings Club, Beale Street, not to mention singing on Hollywood Boulevard.......Then there was Glastonbury. But most of all for Connie has to be touring UK with the late, great BB king, culminating in a show at the world famous Royal Albert Hall London. Connie herself said “Nervous? I was both nervous and ecstatic at the same time! Not only was I on stage at the Albert Hall, but BB King was listening backstage!” As BB King said “That woman makes my heart sing”

Most of these recordings apparently started out on an album by a band called The Enemy Within released in 1986 and the album was called "A touch of sunburn". Then a few years later, the album was repackaged a few times over with bonus tracks, this is one of the rehashes wherein the releasing label was blowing up the fact that Peter Green (among others) had played on it (albeit in an obviously very minor way). I've heard rumblings that "Chinese white boy" may be the only track to include Green's work but even then, I don't know how reliable the information is that he is even on that track as I wouldn't have known he was on that track by listening to it. I only "know" from what tales I've heard. Green is listed as playing guitar and bass on this CD but states nothing further regarding his appearance so anyone's guess is as good as mine as to where he may be on this platter as I don't even know if the "Chinese white boy" legends were made before the releasing of the bonus tracks (which of course confuses the issue even further in that questions then arise to the effect of "Is he on any of those?"). Pressing on to the Enemy Within's music itself, these guys were obviously trying to do something they felt would be groundbreaking in some musical sense but I think few have been influenced by the recordings enclosed on this disc. The aforementioned "Chinese white boy" is a back and forth bouncer with twangy guitars (possibly trying to give it an oriental feel) and fuzzy vocals. "All quiet" is a funkish opener, "Rock and roll feeling" is a straight ahead rocker, "Doctor" is a rasping chirper, "Four minute melody" is a bouncy tumbler, "Post modern blues" is a plinking doodle, "Eprom song" starts promising but fades fast. "Intensity of vision" tries to sound futuristic and sophisticated but fails, "Camel's eye blues" includes thin searings, "Way you dance" is a new wave blues boogie that's not very useful, "End zone" has a suspenseful theme but instead of building off of hat, it goes nowhere. "Nietzsch's ass" is an unfunny rolling twanger, "Who do you love" is a cold mechanical cover, "Stab the knife" is a galloper that I think could've worked had it been done in a straightforward way and the yowler "Rosy" is a bland closer. Purely for Green completests and no other reason. ~John Fitzgerald

I'll be the first to admit I'm not as on-the-ball as I used to be and chances are I would've been ranting and raving about this Texas Blues Harmonica king a lot earlier, but we'll settle for getting hip in 2003/4. His last disc, "Deadly Nightshade" was truly a mind blower. There are hordes of heavy-breathing harpmeisters out there, but having been raised on Slim Harpo, Alan Wilson, James Harman, and King Biscuit Boy(hey, what a 4-some!); I'm both spoiled and enlightened. Out of 426 harpists making a living in 2004 perhaps 19 turn my crank and Mr. Nevling is in the top 5. What was it about ""Nightshade" that had us so knocked out? Well, how about this for a combination; exceptionally melodic/creative blowing, nice tone, wonderful original material, an appealing voice/vocals, a typical superstar Texas backup crew in support (stunning guitar!), and really fine production and sound. Not bad, eh? How does "Heady" compare? Let's just say it's an extension of "Nightshade" in every way, so that means it's a killer-diller! (Perhaps progression is a more appropriate term), David told me, a couple of months back, "Matt Johnson isn't playing on this new one, but I think you'll dig our new guy, Adam Burchfield." Hey, he was right! Something in the water down there has 5 thousand pickers all playing perfect Blues guitar and Burchfield sounds like he was raised on a strict diet of nasty Texas boogie(his solo on "Jonina" got 4 repeat listenings and a "Wow!) All 12 tunes are Nevling originals and each and every one is a smoker. "You the One" is a Chicago shuffle at a tempo perfect for all those Shaggers in North Carolina. Bob Armour lays down a tine shuffle beat on the drums. "Dip My Wick" is a song of regret (of course) where Dave pays some painful consequences for sampling(musicians might not relate to this tune, being the chaste-type characters the are.....ha!) "I Can't Pretend" is an atmospheric piece slowed down a trifle with beautiful picking from Adam. It's a tune about being played for a fool(knife-in-the-back stuff)that's simply stunning for the harp solo from Nevling. "Jonina" rocks the boogie with an infectious beat, Chicago-style 1950's for "It Ain't Love"(a sure hit in Myrtle Beach, N.C.) and "Only You" is another knockout shuffle for Shaggers to relish. Nevling has the smoothest voice in Texas and the fattest harp tone anywhere(wonder what mike he uses?). Melodic, heavy harp a la Big Walter just flows from this guy and the instrumental "In and Out" is a nice, simple but powerful piece that shows off Nevling's reed ability perfectly, and Adam smokes a wild guitar solo. "Sweet-Thing" is a killer-diller, slow burner that shows Nevling's pipes off perfectly and "Leon's BBQ" is a fun New Orleans style swinger that will have dance floors packed. Closing off is the killer-diller, "Front Porch Boogie" that reminds us of "Whammer Jammer" for its harp shuffling-nice. So, here we have it, Dave Nevling has delivered another Killer Texas harp Blues Masterpiece and the level of music and talent requires us to lay out 5 Big Lone Star Bottles. Dave Nevling has little real competition when it comes to exciting, pure Blues harp blowing , singing and song writing. Check him out.-Andy Grigg

The themes are varied as well. The title track "Sweet Bijou" is about a man very much in love but unfortunately she doesn't feel the same way. "Josiah" is about a young Houston man sentenced to 25 years in prison for a rape he didn't commit. The Innocence Project in Houston took up the case and he was released after serving 4-1/2 years. Many bands come along laying claim to the Delta Blues and Mississippi vibrations that have for years added to the heritage that is the “well-known-blues-tunes.” Or as stated on the Black Oil Brothers bio, the sound of a good man feeling bad. Now as far as this insistence goes, Black Oil Brothers in fact bring a new sector to the mixing kettle of Delta and down right Dirty Blues.

Black Oil Brothers recently put together an LP titled ‘Mean Business’. First off the LP title feels questionable…until the tracks start to roll out. With some sort of special magic, this band takes from the past Blues men who sang about crossroads and battered times; all the while never at any point does Black Oil Brothers come across as a put together act hoping to accomplish a decent Blues album.

‘Mean Business’ guarantees an 11 track slide guitar enthusiasts dream. While each song brings a tribute to varied sections from curses to disappearances, there never comes a point where Black Oil Brothers present themselves as a gimmick or parody of the old time Mississippi front men before them. Take the 9th track ‘Black Tie Crowd’ where a singular guitar is being plucked until a mass build up from the heavy bass line and electric guitar giving the song an almost ‘The Devil Went Down To Georgia’ repetitive adjustment.

If at any point ‘Mean Business’ comes across as a fine-tuned LP, it would be as the 10th track ‘Rhea‘ played out. Because ‘Rhea‘ comes off as a foot-stomping jig that sings about putting someone in the ground and digging their own grave. Without ever crossing the overly morbid barrier, Black Oil Brothers found an existing line where playing with the thought of murder could essentially be humorous.

Again being able to toe the line between humor and a luscious dark tune, can easily be messed up and become received as a rookie mistake. However, Black Oil Brothers send out a picturesque album that involves a quarrelling nature of the crossroads to the inner workings of the human soul and the hell that burns the bridge at both ends.

The TRIBUTE TO INSPIRATION album was born out of gratitude for, and is dedicated to, all of the people that taught and directly inspired Carlton and Peyton McDowell to become better musicians. While the music on this album crisscrosses blues, jazz, and R&B genres, the musicians who contributed to this album, many of which are the inspirations, are equally as eclectic. The McDowell Brothers have never put themselves into one category or another. They respect all types of music. They’ve always played the blues, because their grandmother Nancy L. Rice, is one of blues music’s biggest champions, and gave them their first music lessons.

Although Carlton is 16 years-old and Peyton is 13 years-old, they’ve literally been musicians over half of their lives because of the following individuals: Mrs. Neva Artis, John Falstrom, Fernando Jones, Rose Reed and the entire Jimmy Reed Family, Frank Anestos, Dr. Roosevelt Griffin, artist Brother Jacob Schultz, & Jamiah Rodgers. Carlton and Peyton McDowell are fortunate to have benefitted from the Homewood School District #153 Music Program with great musicians/conductors/music educators such as Mrs. Kim Tallungam and Mr. Matthew Zimmerman. While there's no denying the importance and quality of Columbia/Legacy's Complete Recordings series, nine discs may seem a bit intimidating to the newcomer. Collection, a mid-priced, 16-track collection which spans most of Smith's career, ultimately does a better service to the casual listener with a limited budget. Yngve & his Boogie Legs is a band with roots in the blues and rock-genre. With focus on self-made material, a unique sound and a breathtaking live-act, Yngve and his Boogie Legs are one of the most innovative band on todays Norwegian Blues and Rock scene. Yngve & his Boogie Legs started up in 2009 as a trio, but wheels really started to turn when they with 5 members participated in the Union Blues Cup at Notodden Blues Festival in 2011 and won a large Norwegian Tour as "Union Blues Band 2012". During this period they did 52 concerts all over Norway and recorded their first album - "Yngve & his Boogie Legs" with Martin Windstad as their Producer.

In 2013, the band was chosen to represent Norway in the International Blues Challenge in Memphis and the European Blues Challenge in Toulouse. This resulted in concerts in Germany, Denmark and Sweden the same year. During November 2013 their second record - "Straighten Up" was released, still with Martin Windstad as producer. It was recorded in Athletic Sound in Halden, with the legendary Kai Andersen on the controls. Like the debut record, all songs are self-written with great determintation to breathe new life into the blues genre.

Georgia-raised lead singer JOHN MAYS has had a storied career that began in the Southern gospel tradition, crossing over into Doo-Wop, R&B and Blues, not to mention a stint with the Godfather Of Soul JAMES BROWN. He has won numerous Maple Blues Awards for “Male Vocalist Of The Year”. Band leader AL LERMAN is a journeyman musician who plays with sizzle and a whole lot of soul. He’s garnered several MAPLE BLUES AWARD nominations for both his harp and saxophone playing as well as his song-writing. Bassist BOB "OMAR" TUNNOCH played in seminal Toronto bands Whiskey Howl and Wooden Teeth, and has played with John Lee Hooker, Etta James and Paul Butterfield. Jimmy Sutton’s Four Charms debuted their fusion of classic American music on New Years Eve, 1998. The bands intense chemistry and energetic show was an immediate hit. For four years, from 1999 to 2003, the Four Charms performed to a standing room only audience at Chicago’s historic Green Mill jazz club. A quartet that were versatile in all forms of American roots styles, the Four Charms recalled the sincerity and musical depth of Tiny Grimes, Merle Travis, The Treniers and Willie Dixon’s Big Three Trio, to name a few. Key elements of the Charms sound are their dynamics, guitar/sax harmonies and their call and response style, as evidenced on their original tunes, “Sherry Flip”, “Dont Make Me Beg” and “Triskaidekaphobia”, as well as their translations of familiar and obscure material (from Roy Brown’s “Up Jumped The Devil” to the lesser known Five Blazes tune “Chicago Boogie”).

Jimmy Sutton has been playing the doghouse bass since his high school days. Nominated twice by the Illinois Entertainer as the best bass player in Chicago, Sutton incorporates many diverse musical styles. He has recorded with highly acclaimed rockabilly, country and blues artists, including Ronnie Dawson, Koko Taylor, Willie Big Eyes Smith, Deke Dickerson and has shared the stage with a roster of greats, as well. Most notably, Jimmy Sutton was co-founder of Chicago’s Mighty Blue Kings. You can now find Jimmy Sutton performing with The Del Moroccos, The Western Elstons, Deke Dickerson, Chicago Blues Round Robin, and performing under his own name. After three years with the Mighty Blue Kings Sutton teamed up with Madison, Wisconsin blues guitar ace (and vocalist) Joel Paterson. You can now find Paterson performing with The Western Elstons and his own group The Modern Sounds. Sutton and Paterson then recruited former Mighty Blue King tenor and baritone saxman, Jonathan Doyle. Doyle was a fixture on the Chicago jazz scene, until his relocation to Austin, Texas, where he played with the Asylum Street Spankers and Witt Smiths Hot Jazz Caravan. He was just recently touring with Willie Nelson and Asleep At The Wheel, and also The White Ghost Shivers. Cincinnati, Ohio export Jim Barclay on drums rounded out the quartet.

In 2000, the debut disc from the Four Charms, Flatland Boogie, was received with tremendous reviews and sold 5,000 copies. In 2005, The second disc, Triskaidekaphobia, is a current favorite for American and European rockabilly and blues audiences The Charms have played across the US and Europe and have had the opportunity to share the stage and back up some legendary acts such as Jimmy McCracklin, Joe Houston, The Calvanes, The Cleftones, The Teenagers, Billy Lee Riley, Wanda Jackson, and Vernon Taylor. In 2001, the band won the Chicago Musicians award for Best Rock Entertainer. The quartet performed their last show under The Four Charms name in 2007. The Charms still live on in their two albums, Flatland Boogie and Triskaidekaphobia. Call them swing, call them rockabilly, call them jump rhythm-and-blues, call them jazz…..just don’t call them before noon!

A 1991 collection of Albert King's recordings for Stax, Roadhouse Blues doesn't quite live up to its title, as it isn't down and dirty like the blues played at an out-of-the-way juke joint. Instead, this is slick, funky soul-blues that emphasizes the blues somewhat but certainly has a bit of the slick, keyboard-and-horn-fueled funkiness of the '70s. There are a couple of oddities here - a version of "Killing Floor" that has a vocal, a live version of "Match Box Blues" from Wattstax - but this is best thought of as a nice sampler of Albert King's somewhat unheard and definitely underrated early '70s work. /Stephen Thomas Erlewine, AllMusic
