Other Rooms, the 18th album from New Orleans-based songwriter Andy J Forest, adds another chapter to his portfolio, which he’s quietly built into one of the most impressive songwriting catalogs in the city. The prolific Forest has developed a knack for romanticizing life on the streets of his Bywater neighborhood, and he leads off here with another song in that genre, “Franklin Avenue,” about the street that marks the dividing line between the Marigny and Bywater neighborhoods. The song moves merrily along with a second-line beat propelled by Kirk Joseph’s sousaphone, percussion from Pablo Leoni, Washboard Chaz and Gary S. Underwood, and a punching horn section of Ian Smith and Riccardo Gibertini on trumpets, Mike Kobrin on trombone and Jason Mingledorff and Marco Zaghi on saxophones.

The uptempo vamp “Watch Your Back” features Forest’s harmonica in a great call-and- response with the horn section. “She,” a song written for Forest’s partner Karen, also features a terrific horn arrangement. The album includes Forest’s moving tribute to longtime friends Coco Robicheaux and Kenny Holladay, who died within a month of each other last fall. Forest wrote “That Was Our Goodbye” so quickly after their passing that he was able to play it at the memorial show for Holladay at Check Point Charlie. Anders Osborne played the song with Forest that day and appears again here on the album.

One of the most remarkable things about Forest’s career is that he’s adhered faithfully to a blues format yet found ways to grow musically within it. Most blues players describe a very small and very emotionally intense circle and stay within that over the course of their career, but Forest is continually pushing his blues frameworks into funk, traditional R&B and swing directions to accommodate his extensive lyrical wordplay. Forest has matured as both a vocalist and harp player over the years, scaling back some of his wilder eccentricities as he plays with the melodic content of his songs.

The album hangs together really well considering it was cut with different bands in three different countries. My only complaint is that it’s only nine songs long. The first time I listened to it, when the album came to the end I thought my CD player had broken. I guess Forest is working off the old show-biz adage, “leave ‘em wanting more.” These days everything is about individual tracks anyway, not album concepts, so I guess it no longer matters how many songs are on an album. /John Swenson, OffBeat Magazine

Andy J. Forest comes at you from all sides. A talented musician, poet and painter, he is one of those people whose life is a non-stop work of art. "Andy is such a force," said Anders Osborne, who has produced Forest's last two albums. "Once he starts playing there's so much energy." Last year Forest bought a house in the Ninth Ward on Piety Street and he's had his hands full renovating the place from stem to stern ever since. His 15th album, "Deep Down Under In the Bywater," is filled with songs about his new home.

Osborne sought to bring out Forest's individuality in the recording." What I like about Andy is the way he writes in a different kind of poetic style, especially with his blues background," said Osborne. "The first time we hooked up he brought me pages and pages of song ideas and lyrics and they were really stories. So the idea came up, 'What if you just read the stuff, not so much as a spoken word thing, but telling the story as you go."

" On '...Bywater,' Anders added a lot to the arrangement," said Forest. "That groove on '...Bywater,' that octave thing, I've been doing that for years, so I decided to write a song to it. I like some of the lines in there. The line about hearing the washboard: "hear the rattle of the washboard beat," that's for Washboard Chaz, who I play with from time to time, he lives down here on Mazant, he's my neighbor."'Fat Chance' was originally a 12 bar blues and Anders said 'Just hang on the one' so he brought some arrangement to it. He kind of pushed the melody into a different direction. "Voodoo Lips" is already one of Forest's most popular live numbers. "When I do that live and I'm selling CDs after the gig people invariably ask 'Which one has "Voodoo Lips?' That's a good sign." 'Weak Point' was another poem. Anders didn't initially want to do it, he didn't think it would fit in. When we were done we still had another hour left in the studio. I said 'C'mon let's do that Weak Point tune, 'cause bassist Jesse Boyd's a jazz guy,' and he said 'OK, but only if I get to play drums.' I knew he used to be a drummer when he was a teenager but I'd never heard him play. He sounded good.

"Anders made up the bass line on 'Levee En Rose.' I wanted an instrumental with a Leslie harp on it. I put a wah wah pedal on there. I just wanted to do something different. On 'Sunday Rhumba' I did an instrumental, a kind of distorted, Jimi Hendrix thing, and a lot of people commented on it, WWOZ played it a lot, so I figured I'd do an instrumental on this album. "Anders completely changed 'All I Need,' It had a different melody, different groove. He said 'Let's do it Mississippi John Hurt style'."

The entire album was a Ninth Ward project. The tracks were recorded at The Truck Farm. "A couple of people from Kingsway opened up this house right up on St. Claude just about three blocks away from us. Andrew Gilchrist engineered and mixed it over there along with Anders, and John Fishbach mastered and edited it right down the block at Piety Street Recording. ~ JOHN SWENSON

So I'm leaving Rome to get away from the influence of the nuns and the Vatican ... I hitch hike to London to play "4 tips Only" form home bathroom to Hyde Park corners... when it does not rain! So, missing the sun, I decide to slide over to California!

Artistically grown in England and especially in the U.S. where she performed at the House of Blues and BB King Blues Club in Los Angeles, has his recording debut in 2002 with the so-called "Dues Blues", recorded live at Big Mama, the home of the blues in Rome, following a dense concert season, getting a great response from audiences and critics.
She performed with Scott Henderson, Andy J. Forest, Roberto Ciotti and Blues Staff.

Participate in the Pistoia Blues Festival where he opened for David Crosby; Blues Festival in Salerno with Taj Mahal, Macchia d'Isernia Blues Fest, with Rory Block, Taranto Soul & Blues with F. Cerri and Gege Telesforo; Fussy Blues with Willie Murphy, Trasimeno Blues, Blues Festival Aventine in Abruzzo, Hard Rock Cafe in Rome, from which is extracted a television special; Rome meets the World at Villa Ada with Alex Britti and Louisiana Red.
She collaborated with Massimo Nunzi & Jazz Orchestra for the event "History of Jazz" at the Teatro Sistina in Rome, in theater she has worked next to director Francesco Apolloni, at the Sala Umberto in Rome and at the Giffoni Film Festival.
She is acclaimed by the press as "the Blues made in Italy most beautiful hope" , high class singer and grit guitarist ,
featuring an intense personality that is reflected in his voice, sensual and scratchy, and in his guitar phrasing, with the slide guitar and Dobro."
