1960 may have been the big year for Instrumentals, but back in 1959, several white instrumentals acts were already making a dent in the pop charts, among them the Virtues, the Rebels, the Rock-A-Teens and the Fireballs. Duane Eddy had broken through in 58 but in 1959 he had no less than seven singles on the Hot 100. Johnny & the Hurricanes had their first success this year with three big hits. Black artists, however, had less mainstream success. Jimmy Beck sneaked in at #82 for two weeks with Pipe Dreams, Larry Kerrin s The Hunch was a hit for both Paul Gayten and the Bobby Peterson Quintet; Bill Doggett had three discs in the R&B charts but apart from a couple of organ hits for Preston Epps and Dave Baby Cortez, that was it for R&B instrumentals chart-wise. If you re knocked out by what you hear from 1959, just wait till you find out what was on offer in 1960 and 1961.

Sammy Price had such a flexible piano style that he could fit into swing, boogie-woogie, blues, R&B, and rock & roll settings without altering his approach. During 1956, 1957, and 1959, Price led a series of blues-oriented instrumental jams featuring some notable sidemen in his quintet/sextet, including at various times tenor saxophonist King Curtis, guitarists Mickey Baker, Kenny Burrell, and Al Casey, bassists Leonard Gaskin, Jimmy Lewis, and Al Lucas, drummers Bobby Donaldson and Panama Francis, and sometimes baritonist Heywood Henry. The music included on this two-volume set (the complete sessions) is fairly basic and blues-oriented, and often has an early rock & roll beat. The solos of Price and Curtis (in a couple of his better instrumental outings) make this perfectly conceived two-fer of strong interest to jazz listeners. ~Scott Yanow

Sammy Price had a long and productive career as a flexible blues and boogie-woogie-based pianist. He studied piano in Dallas and was a singer and dancer with Alphonso Trent's band during 1927-1930. In 1929, he recorded one solitary side under the title of "Sammy Price and His Four Quarters." After a few years in Kansas City, he spent time in Chicago and Detroit. In 1938, Price became the house pianist for Decca in New York and appeared on many blues sides with such singers as Trixie Smith and Sister Rosetta Tharpe. He led his own band on records in the early '40s which included (on one memorable session) Lester Young. Price worked steadily on 52nd Street, in 1948 played at the Nice Festival with Mezz Mezzrow, spent time back in Texas, and then a decade with Red Allen; he was also heard on many rock & roll-type sessions in the 1950s. In later years he recorded with Doc Cheatham. Sammy Price was active until near his death, 63 years after his recording debut. ~bio by Scott Yanow
