The Son Lewis Trio is an ELECTRIC live ensemble that performs a BUNCH of traditional Chicago Blues, Classic R&B and Roots and Americana Music. Featuring Son Lewis on guitar and vocals, Rich Downes on bass and vocals and Alan Camlet on drums and vocals, their music is often raw and tribal and sometimes punctuated by very sweet 3-part harmonies. This was RECORDED LIVE with no "sweetening" or magical editing and represents what you hear at one of their typical Blues gigs at one of New Jersey's premier "listening rooms", Van Gogh's Ear Café in Union, NJ.

A group of New Jersey-based entertainment professionals and musicians have joined together to create an album that showcases some of the most talented blues-oriented bands that the Garden State has to offer. Standing Room Only: Songs from the Last Roadhouse. The diverse group of featured performers is comprised of several well-established acts, such as The Son Lewis Blues Band, The Crescent City Maulers, and Roadside Louie & the Dusters, as well as such up-and-coming artists as Sharp Edge and The RaunchTones Standing Room Only: Songs from the Last Roadhouse songs. The CD contains over one hour of music and encompasses many different facets of the blues genre including swing/jump blues, delta blues, Chicago blues, rock 'n roll, and even a touch of country.

Son Lewis has been an active figure on the Blues music scene for some time. His work as a modern day exponent of the Blues, and R&B, has led him to recognition as a performer and recording artist. Son began playing Blues guitar in the 1960’s, influenced greatly by artists as diverse as Robert Johnson, Hubert Sumlin (whom he accompanied on stage in December 2006), Otis Rush, and Elmore James. His own particular guitar style developed under the guidance of Blues guitarist Danny Kalb (founder of the Blues Project, a seminal Bluesband of the 1960's). Lewis' reputation has been built upon solid live solo performances and with his own SON LEWIS Blues Band, which has featured members of MINK DEVILLE, THE RICKI LEE JONES BAND, THE JITTERZ, EXUMA, IMPACT, THE VOODUDES, and CASTLE BROWNE. As a solo artist, performing the traditional country Blues, and with his band, rocking juke joints with electric blues, Son has become known as a faithful, and loving interpreter of this nearly lost musical art form. In live performance, TV, radio, and on recordings, Son Lewis has proved to audiences everywhere that the Blues is a vibrant, and exciting form of musical entertainment!

This music comes from deep down in the soul of artist Son Lewis... Original tunes that reflect his life and up-bringing as well as covers of some of his (and his fans) favorite tunes. Steeped in Blues, Funk and Americana, this release figures prominently in the progression of Son's music since the late 1960's and pays homage to some of his fondest influences like Sleepy John Estes, Tim Hardin, John Lee Hooker and the 50's doo-wop classic "Speedo" by The Cadillacs! As with many of Son's recent releases, ALL the instrumentation and sequencing is by Son himself... Sarasota County is a new recording of a song written by Son in 1970 reflecting on the poverty and deprivation surrounding one of America's "resort communities" and the time spent there in his youth. The title cut is a Latin-tinged Blues that will make you want to dance all the way to the Gulf Coast from WHERE EVER you might be!

In his homage to youthful days spent along Florida's Gulf Coast, Son Lewis has included seven new original tunes and five covers of some of his favorite songwriters and tunes, inlcuding Speedo, Crawling Kingsnake (a perennial favorite at his acoustic shows), Sleepy John Estes' Leaving Trunk and Murray McLaughlin's dark take on homelessness amongst military veterans. While most of the originals are "brand new", the collection also includes Sarasota County, which Lewis wrote back in 1970 but just now decided to record. It tells the story of the "other side" of Florida's Gulf Coast; a side seldom seen by the tourists... the poor side of the County. The title track is a Latin-tinged Blues that fairly well bounces ALL the way to Tampa! Like most of his recent recordings, this was done by Son in his First House Studio, featuring him on all instruments and vocals.

Stages is the 20th recording by Son Lewis and his 18th for Silk City Records, the label he helped launch in 1988! These particular recordings were culled from archives of live performances at The New Daisy Theater in Memphis, a Television Sound Stage, The Great Notch Inn (a famous NJ Roadhouse), a Benefit for the ailing Walter Trout and some solo acoustic songs from live radio performances at local University Blues Radio Shows.

Lewis has long been known to surround himself with the outrageously talented and creative musicians and these sessions are no exception. Members of his own band feature Alan Camlet and Tony Carbonaro on drums, Rich Downes and Nicholas D’Amato on Bass, Ron Petronzi on guitar, Jerry Fierro on Harmonica and John Pittas on keyboards.

As coincidence would have it, a one-time performance with local legends Bob “Hoochie Coochie” Paolucci (harmonica/guitar), Larry “Talbot” D’Albero (bass/vocals) and Paul “Hernandez” Unsworth (drums) was captured on digital audio tape when they performed with Son as “The Blues Alliance”. D’Albero’s impassioned lead vocal on “I’ve Got A Right To Sing The Blues” is a highlight of this recording. Also featured is the late K-Ron Brandt singing “Nothing, No Nothing” with The Son Lewis Band backing her up.

The masters for these tunes were uncovered quite by accident while Lewis was preparing for his next studio recording on Silk City and as live performances, they have all the excitement, energy, spontaneity and improvisational excellence that have become hallmarks of the Son Lewis Band and Son Lewis solo over the years… and yes, some of the sonic imperfections that have made live two-track Blues such a staple of musical history in the last 100 years.
Listen up… Listen close… but most of all, have as good a time listening as the guys did playing…!
