Debut album by this delightful two-fisted boogie-woogie pianist, saxophonist, and songster. Highlights abound everywhere, but of particular note is her striking originals "Over Thirty" and "Morning Glory."

Drawing on a variety of musical sources ranging from boogie-woogie to New Orleans R&B to swing to rock & roll, singer and barrelhouse pianist Deanna Bogart emerged as one of the most eclectic performers in contemporary blues. Born in Detroit in 1960, she cut her teeth on the Maryland blues circuit, developing a crowd-pleasing style that often found her leaping up from her piano bench to chat with the audience; clad in her trademark black fedora, Bogart was also known to blow a mean tenor saxophone. A gifted composer as well, her debut LP, Out to Get You, appeared in 1991, followed in 1992 by Crossing Borders; a four-year hiatus preceded the release of New Address on Lightyear. Timing Is Everything was self-released in 2003, followed by Real Time on Blind Pig Records in 2006. 11th Hour appeared in 2009 from Vista Music. ~by Jason Ankeny

Deanna Bogart, the award-winning, multi-instrumentalist known for her vast musical range, broadens her horizons even more on "Just A Wish Away ..." Her newest Blind Pig Records release finds Deanna in territory that is at once unfamiliar and intriguing, intimate and provocative. She invites us on her own personal and musical transitional journey that's taken her in a single year from the Chesapeake Bay to Nashville, and from the high desert of Southern California to deep in the Louisiana bayou, where this CD was recorded.

"Just A Wish Away ..." features some of Deanna's strongest songwriting to date, artfully evoking the excitement of new possibilities tinged at times with a hint of wistful melancholy at what is left behind. From the locomotion of "If It's Gonna Be Like This" to the tender and surprising "Back and Forth Kid" to the sultry, horn-driven "Collarbone," Bogart's signature cut-above songwriting demonstrates the diverse dialects of her musical fluency.

She and producer Joe Michaels created a band of world class players - Marty Rifkin (Bruce Springsteen), Bonerama Horns (Harry Connick Jr.), Charlie Wooton (Royal Southern Brotherhood), Scott Ambush (Spyro Gyra), Cris Jacobs (The Bridge), Terrence Houston (George Porter), Derwin "Big D" Perkins (Jon Cleary), and more. Reviewed in The Washington Post by Richard Harrington, Wednesday, February 2, 2005: "That two conjoined 18th-century barns could prove so hospitable to so much fine music won't surprise anyone who's ever visited them at Wolf Trap. In fact, 17 acts have recorded live albums at the Barns since they opened in 1981 as the smaller, year-round adjunct of Wolf Trap, and a handful of compilations have also come out of assorted folk-focused programs. This new CD gathers one track from each of 16 artists, about half of them local, and captures the venue's populist appeal, nowhere more raucously than in the opening track, "Rock This House," a Jimmy Rogers blues classic delivered with typical bravado by the Nighthawks. The Barns' juke joint feel is brought home in similarly energized performances by the Deanna Bogart Band, the Grandsons and the aptly named Roomful of Blues, who romp through the T-Bone Walker instrumental, "Two Bones and a Pick." Beausoleil's "Perky Dance Two-Step" and the Iguanas' sinewy "Para Donde Vas" exemplify why the Barns also doubles so effectively as a dance hall. On the other hand, its superb acoustics are well suited to the subtler singer-songwriter offerings of Nils Lofgren (the airy, hopeful "Some Must Dream"), John McCutcheon and Chris Smither. Among the previously unreleased tracks: Tom Paxton's gentle evocation of the '60s folk boom, "Did You Hear John Hurt?," with harmonies from Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer, whose wry and mirthful "Daughters of Feminists" is a highlight. So is Eddie From Ohio's "Great Day," a rousing a cappella gospel quartet built around Julie Murphy Wells's sterling lead and underscored by clapping hands and tapping feet."

Deanna Bogart is a blues pianist and sax player with an eclectic resumé that includes years in the Western swing band Cowboy Jazz and a long tenure with Root Boy Slim's skewed R&B outfit. She also has impressive country, jazz, and boogie-woogie chops, the latter showcased on two standout tracks here -- Erroll Garner's "Boogie Woogie Boogie," a romp that shows of her strong syncopated left-hand bass runs, and Pete Johnson's "Death Ray Boogie," where she concentrates on bright, jazzy right-hand fills. Her original tunes provide the album's heart and soul. "Where the Well Never Runs Dry" is a slow, fervent love song that urges lovers to ignore the pain and go deeper to find deliverance. Bogart's soulful keyboard work and Scott Ambush's brooding electric bass support her fervent vocal. She's more upbeat on "In the Rain," a jaunty tune about looking for better times, featuring bright, sparkling keyboard work and Jeff Reed's driving acoustic bass, while "Blues at 11" is, not unexpectedly, a lonely, late-night instrumental delivered by Bogart alone at the keyboard. The album's showstopper is her smoldering version of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." Most singers emphasize the song's message of hope and its dream of better days, but Bogart slows the tempo way down and delivers a vocal that's full of sadness and desolation. Her bluesy take reminds us that we're usually under the rainbow, and the rain clouds, hoping for a better day that most likely will never come. ~J. Poet

The Blues Broads CD/DVD includes both familiar songs associated with their respective august careers as well as newly written material that underscores the creative might of these four remarkable women. Each brings a unique perspective and history to the group that coalesced earlier this year under the aegis of Bob Brown, the album's executive producer and whose Rancho Nicasio venue in Marin County serves as the Blues Broads' unofficial home base. The DVD was directed by John Korty, the noted filmmaker, awarded both an Oscar and Directors Guild Award for the documentary Who Are the DeBolts? And Where Did They Get Nineteen Kids? and an Emmy for The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman. He called the Blues Broads "living testimony to the persistence and longevity of musical talent, proving the value of life experience in making art." He added, "It was an honor to work with them."
