Ghalia Volt - Burn The House Down

Album: Burn The House Down
Size: 87,3 MB
Time: 37:41
File: MP3 @ 320K/s
Released: 2026

Art: Front, back

Wow! Ghalia Volt has been with us for a decade already. She begins her second decade working in yet another new configuration on her sixth album. The Belgian-born, ever-evolving, once one-woman band Ghalia Volt teams with fellow guitar slinger and producer JD Simo on Burn the House Down, the title exemplifying the blues rock she is known for. We’ve heard her absorb the New Orleans style of blues and perhaps are most familiar with her North Mississippi Hill Country style, first honed with Cody Dickinson, before she embarked on a couple of years of constant touring as the One Woman Band.

This time, she recorded in Nashville at the aptly named The House of Grease. Not only does Simo play the guitar, but he also engineered, produced, and mixed the album. Alongside them are the bass-drum tandem of Brian Allen and Chris Powell. All three are presumably working with Volt for the first time. This is as raw as a recording gets with the four of them playing in a single room. Unlike albums where the dual guitarists are featured one in each channel, they eschew that notion here, as the guitars bleed into each other. Both are credited with “guitars, slide guitar,” so it is impossible to determine who owns the riffs and leads. Interestingly, the album is void of extensive jams or solos, only the economical and crisp variety. The dual guitars are complementary, providing an energy surge without sparring with each other.

Volt wrote or co-wrote the eleven tunes, one aspect of the record that Simo did not participate in. Volt is not one to aim for perfection. She loves the raw edges, saying, “We’re not looking at a polished jewel, but more a raw diamond.” Simo’s production values follow suit, far more ‘dirty’ than ‘clean’. [---] Volt’s songs on Burn Down The House are perfectly designed for live performance, full of hand-clapping rhythms and sing-along choruses, songs that she can easily deliver in a power trio format, like her previous record, Shout Sister Shout. My guess is that is how she will tour the album. /Jim Hynes, Rock & Blues Muse

Boogie Beasts - Don't Be So Mean! A Tribute To R.L. Burnside

10. Snake Drive (Feat. Kenny Brown) (3:10)
11. Alice Mae (4:13)

This year, Belgium’s alternative blues rockers Boogie Beasts turn 15 - and they’re celebrating in style. The timing is perfect: it also marks 100 years since the birth of R.L. Burnside, one of the band’s greatest inspirations and a true legend of North Mississippi Hill Country blues. To honour both milestones, the band is releasing a brand-new collaborative album - a tribute to R.L. Burnside. Don’t Be So Mean! goes beyond a tribute. It’s a unique collaboration bringing together artists from both sides of the Atlantic who share a deep love for Burnside and Hill Country blues.

The album features three Mississippi musicians who once shared the stage with Burnside. His son, Duwayne Burnside, lends vocals to two tracks. Longtime guitarist Kenny Brown - Burnside’s right-hand man - also appears on two songs. Luther Dickinson (North Mississippi Allstars, ex–The Black Crowes) adds his signature slide guitar. From Philadelphia, G. Love brings a smooth hip-hop twist to “Shake ’Em On Down.” On the European side, Boogie Beasts are joined by Pablo van de Poel of Dutch psychedelic rock trio DeWolff, and Belgian garage rocker Cedric Maes (The Sore Losers, The Sha-La-Lees), each adding their own distinctive energy.

With Don’t Be So Mean!, Boogie Beasts return to the roots of their sound - gritty grooves, hypnotic riffs, and the untamed spirit of Hill Country blues — while staying true to their wild and uncompromising style. One of the most iconic tracks by R.L. Burnside, built around that hypnotic, repetitive riff. We’ve added a driving dance groove underneath as a nod to his remix albums. When Pablo van de Poel, singer and guitarist of the Dutch trio DeWolff, first heard the base track, his immediate reaction was: “Delta disco!”

Jan and Gert have known Pablo for years, going back to when their former band played several shows supporting DeWolff in the Netherlands. While DeWolff isn’t typically associated with hill country blues, Pablo clearly has an ear for it, and a few records by R.L. Burnside sitting in his collection. He didn’t hesitate for a second when asked to join this tribute. He contributes backing vocals (falsetto) and a great guitar part, adding an extra layer that gives the track a distinct psychedelic feel. /Bluestown Music

Personnel: Jan Jaspers (guitar, vocals); Patrick Louis (guitar, vocals); Gert Servaes (drums); Fabian Bennardo (harmonica).

Guy Verlinde - Best Of Blues

Album: Best Of Blues

10. Heaven Inside My Head (3:19)
11. I've Got You (2:35)
12. Treat Me Right (4:28)

Guy Verlinde is one of Belgium’s most devoted blues storytellers, an artist who does not merely play the blues but truly lives it. Since the age of sixteen, when he first picked up a guitar and harmonica, he has followed a path driven by perseverance, deep emotion, and an unwavering love for the genre. Born on March 22, 1976, in Aartrijke near Bruges, he became captivated as a teenager by the great masters, ranging from Mississippi John Hurt to Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, and the raw slide sound of Hound Dog Taylor. That discovery marked the beginning of a musical journey that now spans more than three decades.

After his early bands Smokin’ Chillums, Backbone, and Mo’ Rice, Verlinde grew into a performer with a distinct and recognizable signature. His powerful vocals, expressive slide guitar, and deeply felt harmonica playing form a style that is firmly rooted in the blues tradition while remaining personal and contemporary. Over the years, he evolved into an artist who does not imitate, but transforms his influences into an authentic musical voice of his own.

In 2026, Guy Verlinde turns 50. He celebrates this milestone with a Best of Blues album. All twelve songs on this album have been remastered to bring out their fullest sound. Two fan favorites, “Do That Boogie” and “Gator Bop,” received fresh remixes, while “Me & My Blues” and “Heaven Inside My Head” were re-recorded, breathing new life into them. Revisiting these songs was a reminder that the blues is not only about the music itself, but also about the people met along the way.

The record offers nearly fifty minutes of warm, organic sound - recorded live in the studio with only minimal overdubs. The five musicians of The Dibs may have climbed many musical mountains over the years, but they still play with the enthusiasm of a young band. Formed in 2019, the group has grown into a tight unit that blends experience, musical curiosity and pure enjoyment.

Their sound moves effortlessly between blues, soul, funky grooves, jazzy touches, gospel and even a hint of country and blues-rock. On Just For You, that musical openness translates into a cohesive album full of groove, emotion and strong songwriting. Importantly, the band chose a fully organic approach: no electronics, no artificial intelligence - just musicians in a room capturing the moment. The result is rhythm & blues soaked in what the band calls “a hot soul sauce.”

Fronted by the honey-toned voice of singer Peter Jacobs, The Dibs present a set of original songs that highlight each member of the band. The musicianship is tight yet full of character, blending soulful vocals with tasteful guitar work and deep grooves. With Just For You, The Dibs show how wide the rhythm & blues tradition can stretch - from deep soul to funky blues grooves - while keeping the music warm, authentic and full of life. /Blues Magazine

Blues Karloff - Light and Shade

10. Blackout Blues (3:55)
11. Pills and Booze (4:03)
12. Don’t Tell Me What to Do (3:15)
13. Evil (3:07)

The Belgian blues band Blues Karloff was founded a few years ago by guitarist Fonzie Verdickt and drummer Georges Milikan. After a few changes in the line-up, the band got its current line-up in 2013 with singer Alfie Falckenbach, bassist Frans Ruzicka, drummer George Milikan and guitarists Paul “Shorty” Van Camp and Thomas Vanhaute. Blues Karloff gets its musical inspiration from the blues as it was made in the 60s and 70s mainly in England by The Yardbirds, The Pretty Things, The Jeff Beck Group, John Mayall, Fleetwood Mac and Led Zeppelin. Their debut album ‘Ready For Judgement day’ (2014) was an ode to their blues heroes Robert Johnson, Jimmy Reed, John Lee Hooker, Albert King, Howlin’ Wolf and Muddy Waters. Last month, Blues Karloff's second album, 'Light And Shade', was released, which, unlike its predecessor, contains not only covers but also original songs. It is a very heavy blues rock album. It hits the mark right away with the opener, the Willie Dixon-written I Ain't Superstitious. Ripping guitars and a heavy rhythm section that reminds one of The Jeff Beck Group's version. The heavy guitar solos then continue in the exciting, thundering rock version of Jimmy Reed's classic Close Together. Love Doctor, known from George Thorogood, is another fierce blues rocker with passionate vocals by Alfie Falckenbach. The lyrical guitars are beautiful in the slow blues Don't Lie To Me. Take These Chains (From My Heart), recorded by Hank Williams in 1952, is given a heavy version with blazing guitar solos. Influences from Led Zeppelin and The Free mark the guitar riffs and rolling bass drenched I’m A Bluesman. The Womack and Womack composition and especially from The Rolling Stones known All Over Now has become a steaming version and the Bob Seger number Hey Gipsy is again characterized by the driven vocals. An “odd one out” is the Jagger/Richards composition Looking Tired that in the performance of Blues Karloff becomes a nice groovy acoustic version. That was also the only resting point on the album because after that the blues rock violence breaks loose again. Flaming guitars, the omnipresent rhythm section and the driven vocals in Blackout Blues, Pills And Booze and Don’t Tell Me What To Do. The closing number is another cover, the Evil written by Willie Dixon and especially known from Howlin’ Wolf. The almost distorted performance by Blues Karloff has a big Led Zeppelin content with a hard hitting drummer.

Steeped in the tradition of Leslie West & Mountain, The Jeff Beck Group and early Led Zeppelin, Blues Karloff throw down some of the hardest-edged rock and blues grooves on the planet. On "Ready For Judgement Day" Blues Karloff serve up a powerful blast of hard rocking blues, each track road tested and fine-tuned in neighbourhood bars, barbecues and clubs. The band salutes some of the blues legends that every member of Blues Karloff has been listening to since childhood.

The album features songs by Robert Johnson, Jimmy Reed, John Lee Hooker, Albert King, Howlin Wolf and Muddy Waters; vintage blues gems revisited, like the British blues-rock greats such the Rolling Stones, Savoy Brown, Free and Eric Clapton with the Yardbirds did back in the sixties and seventies. Blues Karloff is all about these musical influences - Black and White, British and American - that shaped the musical tastes of the individual band members in their youth. /Amazon

‘Big’ Dave Reniers has been known for years as one of the best mouth organ players in Belgium and of course we know him as the frontman of Electric Kings and the Dizzy Dave Band, and this giant sings the blues like no other. His brand new band, Big Dave & The Dutchmen, has been around since 2023 and specializes in pure blues from the 50s and 60s. Where other bands are just echoing, these guys dive deep into it.

Their boogie blues stinks of whiskey and comes straight from the smoky, sweaty clubs of Chicago. They feel it and you can hear it. The band also consists of well-known guys from the genre: Roel Spanjers (Luther Allison, Smokey Wilson), piano and vocals; Mischa den Haring (T-99, Chung Kings) on guitars and vocals; Darryl Ciggaar (Dry Riverbed Trio, Ian Siegal, Minko) on drums and vocals and Dusty Ciggaar (Ian Siegal, The Rhythm Chiefs, Minko), bass guitar and vocals. /André Dieterman

Fred & The Healers are a blues band from Belgium active on the European scene since 1994.

The band originally comes from the french speaking country side of Belgium, from a small village named Maredret.

The original name of the band was 'The Healers' but was soon changed as it was already taken by a contemporary band from Antwerp (with Tee & Wuff).

We play our own electric blues songs - we are no cover band although we regularly pay tribute to our idols by covering some of our favorite blues and blues-rock songs. We are influenced by the main Chicago artists who have electrified the blues in the 50's and 60's, by the British blues of the 60's, by some blues rock and rock artists of the 70's and by some other more contemporary bands.

The band won the Belgian blues prize in 1997 and the Belgian Blues Challenge in 2014.

Five years ago on March 6, 2015, Missy Sippy Blues & Roots Club started off with a fierce opening party and since then has only gone from strength to strength. The monthly blues jams, local heroes concerts, club concerts with international stars, lindy hop evenings, burlesque shows and a genuine Blues and Roots festival during the ‘Gentse Feesten’ provide a constant stream of quality evenings. These evenings usher in the necessary fresh wind that reclaims blues and roots music from oblivion and makes it sexier and more appealing to younger generations. Since its inception, Missy Sippy has been the ideal place for musicians with a heart for blues and roots to meet, jam together, form bands and pursue personal artistic development.

When the Belgian blues musicians Tiny Legs Tim and Guy Verlinde were introduced by a mutual friend 10 years ago, neither could have guessed this would turn out to be the proverbial big bang that created the vibrant blues & roots scene in Ghent, now based in Missy Sippy. The first years of this evolution and numerous crucial encounters – such as with the owners Marie Follebout and Jelle de Boeve – that led to the first real blues club in Ghent, is sublimely documented in the film ‘‘Goin’ Down To Missy Sippy’’ (a production by Dominique Willaert, 2020).

Last winter, Tiny Legs Tim went into the studio with about 20 of these resident musicians to capture the musical identity of the first 5 years on tape. The 12 songs on Missy Sippy All Stars Vol. I are an illustration of the wealth of young talent, diversity and collegiality that are so characteristic of the Ghent blues scene. The recordings were conceived according to the principle of the blues jams: 2 fixed rhythm sections were combined with alternating line-ups. In order to guarantee spontaneity, everything was played live and recorded on tape with analogue equipment. The result is a multicoloured album that captures the essence of ‘making music together’; a sample of the quality and diversity that explains why Missy Sippy is the epicentre of Belgian blues & roots music today.

Singer-guitarist Guy Verlinde is a popular figure in the Belgian (and wider) blues and roots scene. He has made thirteen albums in twelve years, which were well received. Verlinde was preparing for his next album, when the corona virus threw a spanner in the works. About 150 concerts were cancelled, and the money he had saved for the production of album fourteen was spent on living expenses. Guy Verlinde decided to set up a crowdfunding campaign and to his surprise the response was overwhelming. Standing in the light of a brand new day could be made. Guy decided to involve as many musicians as possible who had ended up in the same boat in the project. That is why seventeen musicians lent their cooperation. Among them names such as Tom Beardslee (guitar, banjo), Nils de caster (violin), Roel Spanjers (piano) and Olivier vander Bauwede (harmonica, guitar, harmonium, vocals). The CD opens instrumentally with a short prelude that is an ode to the break of day: Breaking dawn. This is followed by a lot of variety – from (semi)acoustic songs to exuberant brass, to fast guitar work. You will find wonderful guitar strumming in, among others, The unsung (the never sung heroes), If I were your God and The way you are. Beautiful ballads that radiate peace. How much more festive does I’m your man sound. Tough Springsteen-like material can be found in Up on the mountain (which deals with the circle of life), while the melancholy of Caroline brings drips off. To conclude with In July, with a harmonica blown in Toots Thielemans style, which sets the mood in an ode to a summer day. Guy Verlinde was determined to deliver a positive album, and together with the eagerness of the musicians, who are allowed to work together again, this results in a particularly good-sounding and sympathetic end result.

10. Pursuit Of Happiness (3:54)
11. World Goin' Wrong (3:42)

Belgian blues pride Guy Verlinde is back with a new blues album. We proudly present Promised Land Blues, the acoustic blues album he recorded with Tom Eylenbosch. Over the years, they have developed a unique sound with their narrative blues songs, which resonates deeply with blues audiences in Belgium and beyond. In 2024, they were awarded the Belgian Blues Award for Best Duo.

Every song on this album reflects their shared passion for the blues. In Guy’s guitar and vocals you can hear the spirit of the blues greats, while he also introduces fresh, contemporary elements. Tom’s piano and banjo form the perfect counterpoint with which he musically colors each song.

You’ll hear a mix of new socially critical songs, such as “Tears Over Gaza” and “World Goin’ Wrong”, alongside traditional blues gems such as “You Gotta Move” and “A Worried Man Blues”. Some songs, such as “Heaven Inside My Head”, “Do That Boogie”, “Reckonin’ Blues”, “Gotta Let Go”, “I’ve Got You” and “Pursuit of Happiness”, became crowd favourites during the concerts. Although they were released earlier, they were given a new acoustic arrangement on this album.

In true blues tradition, reworking songs is a hallmark of the genre, allowing artists to breathe new life into their music over time. No album would be complete without a Tiny Legs Tim song, and “Hard to Admit” is a heartfelt tribute to their dear friend, who passed away some time ago. Promised Land Blues is an acoustic blues album that is deeply rooted in tradition, but not afraid to explore new horizons. /Blues Magazine

On Friday evenings in pubs over pints of beer (in this case trappist beer Orval), plans are often hatched. On one such occasion, two unique characters devised a plan to make music together. Their shared love for blues from the 1950s and 1960s quickly established the musical direction they would pursue. Putting their words into action, they went into the studio after just two rehearsals armed with infectious grooves, fragments of lyrics, and a whole lot of passion. One of them wielded an old Airline guitar and Fender Deluxe amp, while the other brought along a dozen Hohner harmonicas, an antique bullet microphone, and a dusty 5-watt amplifier.

Two afternoons later, they emerged from the studio with ten tracks. Everything you hear on the abum. "Bad Love," was recorded live (with the exception of the kazoo and washboard on "Greasy Meat" which were overdubbed), and the imperfections (of which there are quite a few) were intentionally left untouched. These ten blues songs. with their raw texture. shuffle along gently, sometimes aiming for the hips and other times tugging at the heartstrings. "Bad Love" is more than just a tasty interlude - it is an infectious collection of original compositions complemented by two covers (C.C. Rider, Rambling On My Mind).

Personnel: Steven Troch (vocals, harmonica); Bart Jult (guitar).
