A direct descendant from the traveling bundled artist packages of the '60s right down to its retro "hatch show"-styled cover art, Tommy Castro and his band play host to a relatively diverse assortment of high-energy blues and soul acts. The concept originated on the yearly Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise where such musical collaborations are typical. Castro's concept was to take that concept on the road, resulting in this dozen-track live album cherrypicked from various tour stops. It's a rollicking, very plugged-in affair, perhaps not surprisingly geared toward some of Castro's current crop of Alligator labelmates such as Janiva Magness, guitarist Michael Burks, and ex-Little Charlie & the Nightcats frontman-gone-solo Rick Estrin. Still, a handful of non-Alligator names like Debbie Davies, Joe Louis Walker, and "Sista" Monica Parker also appear. The varied collective features youngsters Trampled Underfoot as well as lesser-known veteran Theodis Ealey, both of whom handily hold their own next to the more popular participants. Castro takes lead vocals on four tracks, and he, along with his horn-enhanced band, provide backup for the majority of the other artists. Everyone is at the top of their game with an electricity and vein-popping excitement that can only be generated when musicians feed off each other live. Castro in particular seems to relish his master of ceremonies role, charging through a soulful version of Bob Dylan's "Gotta Serve Somebody" and a sizzling "Serves Me Right to Suffer." The latter suddenly shifts tempos from a cracking slow blues to a driving "Radar Love" boogie beat and displays his sometimes underappreciated guitar skills. Most impressive, and rather unexpected, is the number of females in the lineup, a refreshing change from the typically male-dominated blues field. Not only do guitarist Davies and vocalist Magness turn in some thrilling performances (Magness on a tough, horn-punched, swampily rearranged version of James Brown's "Think"), but Monica Parker's slow blues boils, and Trampled Underfoot's bass-playing lead singer Danielle Schnebelen's sexy/angry vocals will have you checking the liner notes to see who this newcomer is. Estrin adds both humor and harp to the generally guitar-oriented lineup with "My Next Ex-Wife," and Michael Burks' ten-minute grinding blues "Voodoo Spell" will make an instant believer of anyone who might not be familiar with his slashing guitar attack. The disc moves from one highlight to the next with the primary detriment being that it's not a double CD to provide more of what's here. Perhaps volume two is in order. ~Hal Horowitz

Riding the wave of support following the IBC, Trampled Under Foot was ready to take their style of power blues/rock to audiences around the world. After a series of headlining tours and stand out performances at blues festivals across the globe, TUF earned the reputation as one of the hottest bands on the blues circuit.

While watching their fan base grow world-wide, the trio released multiple CDs and DVDs under their own label, TUF Records, including the highly acclaimed 2011 album Wrong Side of the Blues. The success of that album caught the attention of many throughout the music industry and in 2013 the band partnered with Concord Music Group to release their major label debut, Badlands. Hailed by fans and critics alike, Badlands revealed a musical sophistication well beyond the band’s years and provided further proof that Trampled Under Foot was the real deal.

In 2014, after brother Kris announced he was leaving the band, Danielle and Nick solicited long-time friend and fellow KC musician Jan Faircloth to join them on drums. Jan brought with him years of experience as a musician in the Kansas City blues scene and provided a fresh take on the band’s trademark sound. The addition of Jan inspired TUF to make other changes in their line up and the group added keyboardist Mike “Shinetop” Sedovic as an official member, turning the trio in to a 4-piece powerhouse blues band and adding a new dimension to their already stellar live performance.

The three siblings in Trampled Under Foot - Danielle Schnebelen, lead vocals and bass; guitarist and vocalist Nick Schnebelen, and singer/drummer Kris Schnebelen - are the children of blues musicians Bob & Lisa Schnebelen. The folks never made it big outside of their hometown of Kansas City, but their kids have been tearing up the scene since they started playing together. Regular gigs around their hometown started the buzz that intensified when they took first place at the Blues Foundations International Blues Challenge in 2008. Nick took home The Albert King Award for most promising guitarist that same year, which led to headlining shows at festivals all over the U.S. and Europe. A 2014 Blues Music Award winner, there's not a time in her life that soul singer-bassist Danielle Nicole (born Danielle Nicole Schnebelen) doesn't remember loving to perform. The Kansas City-raised daughter of musicians developed a solid blues foundation touring the world with her brothers, Nick and Kris Schnebelen, in the sibling band Trampled Under Foot, which released Badlands in 2013. Debuting at #1 on Billboard's Blues Chart, Badlands revealed a musical sophistication well beyond the band's years. As Trampled Under Foot wound down after 13 years, Nicole formed her own band and on March 10, 2015 makes her Concord Records solo debut with the release of a New Orleans-flavored six-track EP, featuring GRAMMY®-winning producer-guitarist Anders Osborne, Galactic's co-founding drummer Stanton Moore, guitarist Luther Dickinson (North Mississippi Allstars) and her regular keyboardist Mike Shinetop Sedovic. Nicole was well aware of the Crescent City's formidable musical mojo, but she had no idea she could fall so deeply under its spell until she hooked up with Osborne, who proved to be the perfect shaman. So...Creedence Clearwater Revival has been gone for what, over forty years? The life expectancy of most bands is probably less than 6 years of what some of us refer to as critical i.e. commercial success.

Creedence is indeed the band that will not die. Countless collections and retrospectives on their all too limited discography have been offered up. Most are horrible.

A Blues Tribute to Creedence Clearwater Revival is perhaps the finest "tribute" release to have surfaced with stellar performances from Sonny Landreth, Leroux, and Duke Robillard among others. The true blues infused swamp sound of this legendary American institution is embraced with that same raw edge that took America by storm in 1969.
