Blues and R&B legends Little Willie Littlefield and Champion Jack Dupree had much in common. Both had extensive recording careers stretching back into the 1940s and recording for independent record companies; both decided to live in Europe; both recorded albums in Europe and they headlined at the first ever Burnley Blues Festival in the UK in 1989.

Blues fans were treated to a weekend of blues, R&B and boogie with Willie topping the bill on March 23rd and Jack the following evening backed by the Big Town Playboys, who perfectly recreated the type of rhythm and blues Willie and Jack recorded in the late 1940s and 1950s.

The tracks here come from their shows at Burnley with the exception of three tracks Willie recorded with the Playboys at the Belgium Blues Festival in 1986 later broadcast on national BBC radio on the Paul Jones show.

One of rock’s first teen sensations who went on to a long-lasting career that saw only brief flurries of commercial success, but who built an enduring reputation that lasted into the next century.

Littlefield was born in Texas in 1931 becoming proficient on guitar by age six, then finding his true métier on the piano the next year. By fourteen he was playing bars, his flashy technique already drawing notice and just before turning seventeen a local Houston record shop owner, Eddie Henry, started his own label specifically to record the young rock prodigy, releasing a handful of sides over the next few months before Littlefield was scouted and signed by Modern Records of Los Angeles, a much more established independent label.

Immediately upon arrival he notched his first hit and followed it with two more records that made the still skimpy national charts, while also scoring numerous regional hits along the way.

Though an excellent boogie pianist Littlefield’s biggest influence came with what he called his “floating right hand” which introduced the value of piano triplets behind mid-tempo and slower numbers, something Fats Domino picked up on and popularized throughout the next decade, always crediting Littlefield as his source of inspiration.

Vocally Littlefield was very similar to fellow Texas rock pianist Amos Milburn, using a disarmingly lethargic delivery with a warm mellow tone to convey an enormous amount of soul in his singing. Despite writing most of his own material Littlefield was an early recipient of some of Jerry Leiber & Mike Stoller’s compositions when they were just starting out, including the original version of “Kansas City”, which Federal Records confusingly renamed “K.C. Loving”, perhaps costing themselves sales in the process. A few years later when Wilbert Harrison used Leiber & Stoller’s preferred simpler title and scored a #1 hit with it, prompting many to go back in the years since and explore Littlefield’s original which as a result remains his most identifiable recording.

After a commercial downturn in the mid-50’s he returned to the charts on tiny Rhythm Records in 1957. Oddly enough, despite this revival of his fortunes and the subsequent revisiting of Kansas City in 1959, Littlefield’s recording career – at least in terms of released singles – was essentially over by 1960, save for a few stray sides coming out. When touring opportunities dried up, though he was still just in his early 30’s, he settled into the San Francisco club scene playing a varied set list that encompassed everything from classics to country and western along with his preferred rockin’ boogie style.

Rediscovered in the mid-70’s he played U.S festivals and traveled overseas for the first of many highly acclaimed European tours which led in turn to his first opportunities to cut full-length albums in the early 1980’s. In addition he met and married a woman from the Netherlands and settled in that country where he remained for the rest of his life, touring fairly steadily until 2000. His retirement lasted until 2006 when he got tired of fishing and returned to the stage, as vibrant a performer as ever, until cancer claimed him in 2013 at 81 years old.

Before he was 21 years old, Texas-born pianist Little Willie Littlefield had etched an all-time classic into the blues lexicon. Only trouble was, his original 1952 waxing of "Kansas City" (here titled "K.C. Loving") didn't sell sufficiently to show up on the charts (thus leaving the door open for Wilbert Harrison to invade the airwaves with the ubiquitous Jerry Leiber/Mike Stoller composition seven years later).

Influenced by Albert Ammons, Charles Brown, and Amos Milburn, Little Willie was already a veteran of the R&B recording wars by the time he waxed "K.C. Loving," having made his debut 78 in 1948 for Houston-based Eddie's Records while still in his teens. After a few sides for Eddie's and Freedom, he moved over to the Bihari Brothers' Los Angeles-headquartered Modern logo in 1949. There he immediately hit paydirt with two major R&B hits, "It's Midnight" and "Farewell" (he added another chart entry, "I've Been Lost," in 1951).

Littlefield proved a sensation upon moving to L.A. during his Modern tenure, playing at area clubs and touring with a band that included saxist Maxwell Davis. At Littlefield's first L.A. session for King's Federal subsidiary in 1952, he cut "K.C. Loving" (with Davis on sax), but neither it nor several fine Federal follow-ups returned the boogie piano specialist to the charts.

Other than a few 1957-1958 singles for Oakland's Rhythm logo, little was heard from Little Willie Littlefield until the late '70s, when he began to mount a comeback at various festivals and on the European circuit. While overseas, he met a Dutch woman, married her, and settled in the Netherlands, where he remained active musically into the 2000s. He died of cancer in 2013. /Biography by Bill Dahl, AllMusic

Little Willie Littlefield began his career as a recording artist at the age of 16 for Eddie's Records in Houston. His first recording “Little Willie's Boogie” was a hit in Texas. In Houston Willie recorded 8 tracks for Eddie's Records and Freedom Records in 1948/1949.

While in Houston, word reached the Bihari brothers (owners of the Modern-label in Los Angeles) about a teenage wonderboy pianist who was currently breaking up at the Eldorado Ballroom. Before leaving Houston Jules Bihari had already inked a contract, recorded Littlefield's first side “It's Midnight” and arranged for Littlefield to come to the West Coast.

When Littlefield arrived in L.A.later that month “It's Midnight” was a big hit (peaked at 3) in the charts nationwide and he was booked in L.A.'s Melody Club and in Johnny Otis' famous Barrelhouse in Watts. He was an overnight sensation. “It's Midnight” not only established him in the Rhythm and Blues field, but also left an impression on other upcoming stars such as Fats Domino who developed his triplet piano- style from the Littlefield recording.

Littlefield recorded about 30 tracks for Modern in 1949, 1950 and 1951 and scored some more hits such as “Farewell”and “I've been lost”. He recorded with L.A.'s leading Rhythm and Blues session musicians including saxplayers Maxwell Davis and Buddy Floyd, guitarists Chuck Norris and Johnny Moore and drummers Al Wichard and Jessie Price.

This is a 25-song compilation drawn from Littlefield's output for Modern between 1949 and 1952, including the sole hit he scored for that label, "It's Midnight (No Place to Go)." Littlefield is somewhat more obscure than many other artists mining a similar blues/R&B crossover field in Los Angeles studios in the early 1950s, such as Charles Brown, Amos Milburn, and Floyd Dixon. On the basis of the music here, Littlefield deserves to be in the same echelon as the aforementioned performers. He was a fine pianist who was skilled in the boogie woogie style and tempered for the times with a modern R&B influence. His use of triplets, according to the liner notes, influenced Fats Domino. He was also more versatile than some piano bluesmen of the era, and was comfortable with slow and melancholy-tinged ballads as well as jumping uptempo R&B tunes (the boasting "I Like It" is a standout). His singing was more easygoing than distinctive, but still had a relaxed charm. Many of the sides here were cut with some of the Los Angeles studio musicians -- horn player Maxwell Davis, guitarist Johnny Moore, and others -- that were instrumental in setting the paces for the jazzy, urbane R&B music of the early 1950s in L.A. The sound is very good, and is mastered from the original acetate lacquers, with only occasional (and slight) surface noise peeping through. The disc includes five previously unissued cuts (three of which are alternate takes). Little Willie Littlefield was Modern Records' new discovery in 1949 when his first side for the company, It's Midnight, whizzed to #3 on the R&B chart. The teenage piano-playing star and vocalist had been talent scouted by the Bihari brothers, Modern's owners, after seeing him at the Eldorado Ballroom in Houston. They took him into a local studio where they produced It's Midnight using his old schoolmate, Don Wilkerson, on tenor sax. After the session the brothers encouraged Littlefield to move to Los Angeles by sending him a train ticket. When he arrived on the West Coast he was on the charts and became an overnight sensation at the clubs in Los Angeles' Central Avenue.

Littlefield went on to cut many fine sides, including Happy Pay Day for Modern, but never attained the chart success of his first recording. However, Littlefield's unique triplet piano playing influenced the young Fats Domino in New Orleans. In late 1952, he was snatched up by Ralph Bass, A&R man for Federal. For that company he became famous for his recording of KC Lovin', later reprised by Wilbert Harrison as Kansas City For Fury, topping the charts in 1959.

Littlefield moved to the Bay Area in 1957 where he signed with Rhythm Records and had regional success with Ruby, Ruby. He married and made his home in the Netherlands in the 80s. He is a popular artist in Europe and has become a regular visitor to the UK, where he has toured with the Big Town Playboys. He recorded an album for Ace entitled Happy Pay Day in the early 80s, and has since cut many albums for various European labels.

The blues/R&B set opens with the three of the kings of the Blues Elmore, the Wolf and John Lee, though the current indisputable King of the blues B.B. makes a wonderfully low-key appearance later. By the way, the version of House Rent Boogie here has never been released on CD before. We go down home for a couple of cuts from Drifting Slim and Joe Hill Louis, before heading back up town, going way out west with some cool LA sounds from John Watson and Pee Wee Crayton just two of the great guitarists to be found here. Check the lyric on Big Duke's Hey Dr Kinsey never has an academic report on sexual proclivities been put to music with such deep-felt passion. Young Jessie continues the discussion on Don't Happen No More while Lil Greenwood and Helen Humes are one either side of him with clear opinions on the matter also. Of all people Ike Turner cools things out with a fine rockin' instrumental. The set closes with a beautiful soulful performance from Little Johnny Taylor that we have never issued before.

VA - Houston Might Be Heaven

This interesting box set packages 103 sides of vintage Texas blues, jazz, and early R&B recorded in Houston studios immediately after WWII between 1947 and 1951, a boom time when clubs and independent labels were flourishing in the city, and it ends up being both a musical snapshot of a particular place at a particular time and a fun and varied playlist to listen to -- the box set version of a hat trick. Full of rare sides of boogie piano, uptown blues, and swinging little jazz-blues orchestras, Houston Might Be Heaven has some delightful gems, Carl Campbell's swirling, clarinet-led “Goin’ Down to Nashville,” L.C. Williams' blues piano ballad “Louise,” Smokey Hogg's reckless, loose, and yet somehow endearingly lovely “She’s Always on My Mind,” and Peppermint Harris' sparse and stately take on “Rainin’ in My Heart” among them, all of which show what a fine and bright music scene Houston had going in the postwar period.
