Not to be confused with the late rock & roller Joe Turner, this gentle giant of the blues boasts a forty year career that has seen him play record, arrange and tour with all the greats from BB King and Albert King to Little Milton, Al Green, Isaac Hayes and many more.

Big Joe's career though is inextricably tied in with the very best years of BB King. As a core member and band leader of BB 's classic 50's line-ups, Big Joe would think nothing of recording three albums in a day with the same rhythm section, often backing the very best blues artists on his native Beale Street.

Joe also appeared in Isaac Hayes' groundbreaking "Wattstax" movie, and appeared on vinyl with Chuck Berry, when it occurred to him that he should step out in his own right.

Having established himself as both a master bass player, band leader and arranger, and talent scout Big Joe has spent the last decade honing his song writing skills. A move to Europe led him to signing to Mystic records with whom he cut three albums with lead vocalist Eugene Bridges.

The albums impressed not least because Joe wrote nearly all the material , including the show stopping "Blood On Your Hands"; "Bad Luck"; "Evil"; and the self explanatory "I Am The Blues". Moreover Joe Turner expanded his audience base by heading off to the continent and settling in France.

Since that time three years ago, Joe has unveiled a brand new talent in front man Carl Wethersby, a fine blues vocalist and song writer - his self penned "Rock Your Town" is on the new Big Joe Turner Live CD.

What you can expect from a Big Joe concert is the concept of a good time blues show with magnificent playing, great songs, and of course passionate blues. Big Joe Turner paid his dues for over 4 decades, and his Memphis Blues Caravan joyfully fulfills his potential. The Blues never sounded so good.

In 2017 Eugene Hideaway Bridges was honored by The Jus’ Blues Music Foundation and awarded The Albert King Lifetime Award, “The Lucy Award”, for his outstanding contributions in continuing to keep the style of traditional blues alive. Inspired by this award and in memory of his bluesman father, Othineil Bridges Sr “Hideaway Slim” (1938–2015), Eugene has gone back to his roots. To the music Eugene learnt as a child sitting on the front porch, where “Hideaway Slim” showed Eugene how to play the blues.

His 2018 release reflects this Live In Tallahassee. Recorded at the historic Bradfordville Blues Club in Tallahassee, Florida on August 11th, 2017.

Singer/guitarist Bridges knows how to rock the house. He might not be doing anything new, but he can find a groove and hold on to it, with some strong blues heavily spiced by his native New Orleans in the rhythm and delivery. There's even a gospel flavor to some of the tracks, although the overall feel is just having a good time (he does, however, get more serious on "Living").

This is a much more consistent album than his last effort, and Bridges sounds more assured both vocally and instrumentally, while his compositions, if not sophisticated (hardly a word that applies here) have moved up to the next level, and are sounding distinctive rather than generic. His band is also far more together. That he's a B.B. King fan is quite apparent from his guitar work (and there are certainly far worse role models), but you can also hear people from Otis Redding to Sam Cooke in the way he phrases a song. This is a great album from one of the best blues guitarists and singers currently playing. Eugene "Hideaway" Bridges plays the blues like he was born to it (and is also a brilliant showman). This album from 1998 captures him with a backing line up of piano, bass, drums and organ, playing an excellent set that draws on inspiration from BB King and Sam Cooke among others.

Eugene "Hideaway" Bridges is a blues artist who offers music that is not advanced or out of the ordinary, but assures everybody a real good time. These live sessions at Chango's Havana Club in San Antonio, TX, showcase Bridges and his band at the height of their party-making powers in a very strong set of electric blues featuring original material. Where Bridges might be a bit short-sighted in that many of these songs bear familiar or even classic titles, they are not the songs seasoned blues lovers would know.

Nonetheless, the bandmembers play with their collective hearts and souls, while the leader sings tough, rough-and-ready modern blues with an urban edge similar to a cross between B.B. King and Bobby "Blue" Bland. Organist David Webb and electric bass guitarist Eric "Lollipop" King are well above average as accompanists, while trumpeter Justine M. Miller and saxophonist Seth Kibel add plenty of soulful punch to a potent band that Bridges commands.

The leader favors a style not so much in the Texas swing blues tradition, but does gravitate toward music influenced by big-name predecessors. A song built on the "don't go away" theme, "Rome Wasn't Built in a Day" is a fairly good cover of Sam Cooke, while Cooke and Lou Rawls wrote "Movin' and A-Groovin'," done without commercial concessions. All the rest are written by Bridges, though the rocking warm-up "I Got the Blues," midtempo "Woke Up This Morning," funky and contemporary "Little Boy Blue," and outstanding lone real Texas swinger "Won't Be Your Fool" all have copped headers from great blues songs, but different lyrics.

"Real Hero" is totally original within its king-meets-kingsnake slinky singing and big beat bass drum accents, the autobiographical "Bluesman" is an on-the-road song from the personal perspective of Bridges, and "I Know That You Love Me" deviates somewhat in its good-time bompity-bop calypso rhythms. In an extension of Cooke's traditional spirit soul-blues, "I Found It" stands out not only for its honest and pure intent, but it also seems more naturally derived.

But when it's time to party and get down, Bridges and his band cut loose on "Giving Up on Love," tossing away any airs or pretension to rock the house down, while the equally energetic closer, "Jump the Joint," recalls Louis Jordan's "Let the Good Times Roll" in that the band could indeed likely play all night long. While the band and Bridges are in rare form, this release cannot completely capture their charisma and dynamism as experienced by patrons actually being at a live show. Still, a companion DVD notwithstanding, this audio offering is going to be an item all fun-loving electric blues lovers will want in their collections, and comes recommended without reservation. /Michael G. Raised in Texas and Louisiana, while still a small child Bridges performed on stage with his father, guitarist Slim 'Hideaway' Bridges. Briefly forsaking the guitar, he joined his brothers to form a gospel group, the Bridges Brothers, and he also sang with the choir of his local church. He continued to perform both sacred and secular music, the latter with his own R&B band, the Five Stars. In his mid-teens Bridges served in the US Air Force and in his late teens, military service now behind him, he sang and played in the New Chosen Singers and then the Mighty Clouds Of Joy.

A later group was the Eugene 'Hideaway' Bridges Band, with which he toured nationally from his Houston, Texas home base. He also visited Europe as a solo act, playing in France and the UK where he became popular first with the Memphis Blues Caravan and later in his own right, becoming highly rated in blues magazine polls in both countries. It was a UK company, Armadillo Records, that saw Bridges' potential and signed him in 2000. In addition to touring Europe, Bridges also visited Australia and New Zealand where he attracted enthusiastic audiences.

In 1995 singer Dana Gillespie came up with the idea of holding a blues Festival on Mustique -- the island usually billed as a “luxury holiday hideaway”. Held annually at Basil's Bar with a stage surrounded on three sides by clear turquoise water, the event raises money for an educational charity on neighbouring St Vincent.

Born in New Orleans, Eugene is a nomadic musician living his life on the road travelling from America through Europe, to Australia with many other stops in between. A towering man with a huge voice, playing an unparalleled brand of blues, oozing enough genuine charm to light up a small city. If you like your blues music laced with soul, funk, gospel and rock, delivered with buckets of class and warmth take a listen to Eugene’s musical catalogue.

In 2000 Eugene signed to Armadillo Music and released his CD, Man Without A Home, which got worldwide airplay. Eugene appeared, often headlining, at major festivals in the USA, all over Europe, Singapore, New Zealand and Australia, whipping up a storm wherever he went with his distinctive southern sound. The 2003 release, Jump the Joint, reached Number 4 in the US Living Blues Charts, charting for three months. Eugene’s songs also appeared regularly in The National Association of Rhythm & Blues DeeJay charts. He was nominated for three 2003 US Cammy Music Awards.

Turning fifty in 2013, Eugene wanted to put together an eclectic, retrospective collection of thirteen of his own songs and four covers. Moving from a traditional song learnt in church as a young child, to songs about his life, travel, lost loves and a treasured 1981 Datsun 720 truck Nelly Bell! Here we have Roots & Vines.
