Steve Plater and Marion Turner have been busy writing new material, and finally has come to fruition. Just about all of the songs are their own originals and with the cigar box guitar featured on this album, this primal sounding instrument is the strong edge to Salty Dog's unique sound.

Steve makes his own guitars that feature screaming electric pickups. They are based on a one stringed instrument actually created from a large cigar box that conjures up images of that post depression earthy sound from street-corner performers which clearly adds a strong edge to the music on this album. Not only does this work of art instrument sound great, it clearly looks cool and attracts major attention when Steve cranks them up. With Marion's amazing vocals and her harmonica this music is awesome raw and gritty.

Personnel: Steve Plater (guitars); Marion Turner (vocals, harmonica); Nick Gunsser (bass); Geoff Hassell (drums); Rhiannon Simpson (drums, tracks 10 & 11).

One of Victoria's hardest working acts, Salty Dog has released a compilation featuring the best of its previous 4 albums. These days consisting of Steve Plater and Marion Turner alone, the band has evolved over a long and winding road, both literally in their touring, and in their past recordings. Soon to commence work on their 5th album, Salty Dog considered this a good time to look back over their recorded history.

All previous albums are represented, with the outstanding tracks from each being selected. As well as playing to their loyal fans, the "Dogs" have won many awards for their brand of country Blues. These include: Female Performer Of The Year Victorian/Tasmanian (VicTas) Blues Awards 1999, Male Performer, Band/Duo, Album VicTas 2000, Album Of The Year, Australian Blues Awards, (Chains) Goulburn 2002.

Thanks to Ballas.

14. Can't Be Satisfied (2:39)
15. The Things You Do (3:11)

It's 2003 and suddenly the word 'Blues' is all over the music industry, due to acts such as the John Spencer Blues Explosion, The White Stripes and the Black Keys, amongst many others, bringing a sound to the world that they announce as the blues. But while these artists proclaim the influence and inspiration of the great Blues men and women, very few actually ground themselves in the actual playing of the Blues. Not so with Salty Dog - Steve and Marion not only explore the history of the Blues, they learn it, absorb it and rework it.

Here are the songs of Blind Lemon Jefferson, Hound Dog Taylor, Jessie Mae Hemphill amongst others, all performed in the unique style that Steve and Marion bring to their craft. To aid the authenticity of their sound, Steve is now performing the songs on a Didley Bow, the 3 string guitar type instrument made from cigar box that was the actual instrument on which much early Blues was performed, and Marion just grows in stature with every recording, both on harmonica and vocal. She is now most definitely Australia¹s leading female Blues harmonica player.

Take this album as, not just the authentic entertainment that it is, but also as the work of 2 people who have studied and explored the Blues, and who bring you, the listener, the results of that search. /Liner notes by John Durr

Steve Plater: A dynamic wicked guitar player, both electric and acoustic, has gained the recognition as one of Australia's finest multi-instrumentalists. Steve is a one man band performing on drums, snare and hi-hat with his awesome sounding handcrafted Biscuit-Tin/Jack Daniels tin guitar and cigar box guitars made by Steve himself, clearly giving the raw rootsey edge to Salty Dog's unique sound.

Marion Turner: Australia's leading female vocal and blues harmonica player completes the other half of Salty Dog and is the 3-times winner Vic/Tas Blues awards Female Artist of the Year.

(Note: Not to be mixed up with a US rock band with the same name.)
