Steve "Big Man" Clayton, born in Birmingham, UK, is a highly gifted award-winning piano player and singer. After finishing his classical studies, he decided to dedicate his musical life to his love of blues piano, and has remained true to himself and blues piano for over 45 years.

His own compositions demonstrate his love for this music; a mixture of blues, boogie woogie, gospel and rock and roll, are all available to hear on 13 CDs. He presents himself on the stage totally relaxed and with great humour, although from the very first note, the audience realize that Steve "Big Man" Clayton is a very serious artist, an artist of the highest calibre, an artist that is very much keeping the art of blues piano alive and kicking.

Some people consider a boogie woogie pianist to be something like an animal trainer: Someone who tames the piano instead of wild animals. Viewed from this perspective, Steve "BIG MAN" Clayton is a very humane "animal trainer". Rugged, but nimble and with a lot of feeling. Purposeful, but full of surprises.His blues and boogie woogie has matured into a cultivated form of this primal, foot-stomping, seething barroom music. The "BIG MAN" can do the business - and he really lets it roll! The Man has been playing in the big leagues for over 20 years, and where others have already slipped into a routine, he still repeatedly manages to come up with something new. His boogie is full of elements from different musical directions: jazz, cajun, barrelhouse, soul and rock'n'roll. And he thrives on it! He does not play one role, the "BIG MAN" takes many directions in his musical improvisations. Blues are the unwavering foundation, as solid as the beat of his right foot, which Clayton uses to propel himself through his repertoire, a repertoire that includes hard driving numbers like "Gotta lotta Lovin In Me", tender tunes dripping with irony like "Strange Life I'm Living", and slow songs giving you goose-bumps like "Lay Your Love On Me". There are a lot of familiar sounds, at first striking listeners as something they have heard somewhere before. But Clayton does not linger here, resting on this initial impression. It is listening to him very closely: his solos are soul food for the ears, and the harmonic framework of his own compositions leaves the usual blues progressions far behind. Anyone who the Man from the island leads into his musical jungle for the first time is not allowed to leave very soon. First he captures you with condensed bass lines which he writes on the piano with his left hand as he moves along. This is then electrified with a few loose riffs with his right hand. And then the freight train really gets going. Casting a glance at the audience to make sure everyone has a window seat when the boogie train leaves the station, Steve "BIG MAN" Clayton lets it rip, in the engineer's seat at the front of the locomotive. He has been awarded: Best Piano Player in 1995, 1997 and 1998 presented by the British Blues Connection and, in 2001, the oberschwaebischer Kleinkunstpreis presented by the Zehntscheuer, Ravensburg, Germany.

Clayton was born in Birmingham, England.

He began to show an interest in music at the age of 10. This prompted his father to buy an old upright piano and he promptly shipped him off for weekly piano lessons, which he would keep up for the next 5 years.

Towards the end of his music lessons, his music teacher composed a blues for him to learn. The different tones and rhythms were something totally new to somebody learning the classics.

This new found music had an enormous effect on him; the record collection mounted, spending all his pocket money on records by Cow Cow Davenport, Albert Ammons and Memphis Slim, to name only a few. His time was spent at the piano, trying to reproduce the sounds he was hearing.

It didn’t take long for Clayton to find his way into his first blues band after leaving school, and he would spend the next few years learning his craft in numerous local bands, being hailed as "The Ivory Maradona" and "The Big Man of Boogie Woogie".

The "Big Man" was requested to back visiting U.S. artists like Louisiana Red, Shuggy Otis and Carey Bell. He toured Europe with them and he learnt from them. He is also the man pounding the keys on the award winning CD "He knows the blues", by Otis Grand.

Learning to sing was a real turning point because it led him to song writing, the results of which can be heard on his highly acclaimed debut album "Can’t Stop The Boogie" which he recorded in 1991 with his long-time band "The 44’s". This prompted the German record label Hot Fox, to send him to Chicago to record his second album "I Got A Right", which features legends S.P. Leary and Lester "Mad Dog" Davenport (1993). Four more recordings would follow; "I got to sing these blues" (1999), "You know what I mean" (2000), "Dirty Mistreater" (2004), and "Goin' back to Birmingham" (2007).

The "Big Man" was honoured as best piano player by the British Blues Connection in 1995, 1997 and 1998 before leaving for the Boogie Woogie capitol of the world, Germany, where he now resides.

It didn’t take long for him to make his mark here neither, winning a south German prize as best artist for 2001.

The "Big Man" sings and plays the blues as good as you could hear anywhere in the world. He has taken the old style and put his own personal touch to it, indeed ... "there is no mistaking the unique sound of Steve "Big Man" Clayton".
