Rita’s influences are mostly American folk music from districts and areas not very familiar to the mainstream audiences. Dusty roads, back and forth from the Appalachian Mountains to the Mississippi Delta are areas she travels musically. Her intense nerve, her strong and rich voice mixed with deeply rooted soul form her personal musical expression. Many songs rooted in Rita’s musical landscape are often formed upon a simple, repetitive chord progression with intensely felt emotions and the raw power of trance. Margit Bakken (born 8 April 1967) is a Norwegian musician (vocals, guitar) and songwriter. She is one of the most established blues musicians in Norway, and often performs with Rita Engedalen as the duo Women in Blues. She has performed as a singer since the age of 8. In 1997, she was a contestant in the Norwegian version of the musical television show European Soundmix Show, where she was one of the finalists. Her debut album, On The Other Side, was released in 2009. In 2012, she released her second album, Women in Blues, with Rita Engedalen.
Rita Engedalen and Margit Bakken make huge success with their first release as “Women In Blues”. Both of the ladies have released solo projects before on their own, but now they made a fantastic album together.

Rita Engedalen is Norway's definitive Blues Queen and one of the most profound female blues artists in Europe.

Engedalen debuted as a blues performer with the 2004 recording of her album "Hear My Song". She has since recorded five albums under her own name while receiving the Spellemannsprisen for her album "Heaven Is Not Ready For Me Yet" in 2006. Rita Engedalen has an international audience and she was the winner of the European Blues Challenge in Berlin in 2012.

She has recently returned from a musically rich trip to Mississippi, where she, in Clarksdale, was in a studio recording new version of "Heaven Is Not Ready For Me Yet". This time with the city's best gospel choir. This recording can be heard on the forthcoming album "Best Of Rita Engedalen", to be released at the Notodden Blues Festival 2018, both as a CD and on vinyl (LP).

The music: The style, directly inspired by music from the American South states. is a solid mix of American Blues, Gospel, Norwegian Folk Music, Roots Music and Hill-Country Music. Rita’s songs are original material she has written and which she performs in a distinctive and personal style.

The Notodden Blues Festival, founded in 1988, has hosted dozens of artists from Mississippi, including B. B. King, Otis Rush, Bo Diddley, Pinetop Perkins, James Cotton, Bobby Rush, Charlie Musselwhite, and Super Chikan. In 1996 Notodden and Clarksdale, Mississippi, became sister cities, and cultural exchanges have included performances by Norwegian artists at Clarksdale’s annual Sunflower River Blues and Gospel Festival.

Norway is both geographically and culturally distant from Mississippi, but as the popular Notodden Blues Festival demonstrates, there seem to be no boundaries for the appreciation of the blues. African American entertainers were performing in Norway by the end of the nineteenth century, and blues was featured on traveling vaudeville shows and musical revues such as “Plantation Days” and “Chocolate Kiddies” that toured Scandinavia in the 1920s. The Mississippi-based Utica Jubilee Singers appeared in Norway in 1930, and in 1937 the swing band of Mississippi native Jimmie Lunceford, which included blues in its repertoire, began its first European tour with two performances in Oslo. The first American solo blues artist to appear in Norway was Josh White, who visited Oslo in 1950, and during the latter 1950s blues vocalists Joe Williams, Jimmy Rushing and Big Joe Turner (with pianist Pete Johnson) all appeared on jazz shows.

The brand new album Chapels And Bars consists mainly of newly written original material and was released in connection with the Notodden Blues Festival in early August 2011.

Musical guests on the album include names such as Bjørn Berge, Tuva L. Syvertsen (Valkyrien Allstars), Knut Hem (Hem Strengelag, Reidar Larsen) and Margit Bakken (Women In Blues) and the Swedish blues champion Sven Zetterberg. Stringmachine Bjørn Berge also contributes to the album with great guitar playing and his powerful singing on the title song "Chapels And Bars". Sven Zetterberg contributes with soulful singing and wonderful harmonica in a version of Rita’s concert favorite "Ball And Chain". The guest list is topped by a gospel choir from Mississippi. It was a dream come true when Engedalen traveled to Mississippi and recorded the song “Holy Land” with Coahoma Community College Choir. All these wonderful guest appearences contributes to make Chapels And Bars Rita Engedalen’s most varied and consistent album release to date.

In 2010 Rita Engedalen was awarded the prestigious honor Notodden Blues Festival Blues Award. In the same year, Rita also received the prestigious “Gammleng Prize” awarded by the Fund for Performing Artists in Norway. During this year’s Kongsberg Jazz Festival Rita Engedalen, as the second woman in history, was awarded “Kongsberg City of Merit”.

July 31 Rita Engedalen releases her 5th album «My Mother’s Blues». The same day she will play at the opening of Notodden Blues Festival and later play a full concert at the main stage «Hovigs Hangar». Rita Engedalen has built a large audience through an impressive series of festival appearances and touring at home and abroad. So it is with good reason that she is often referred to as Norway’s Queen of the Blues. «My Mother’s Blues» is the fifth solo album from Grammy Award winner and audience favorite Rita Engedalen. The new album contains 12 songs and includes everything from gospel, folk, acoustic, blues and rock. "The album is personal and describes the meeting with strong musical influences in rock and deep blues," says Rita Engedalen. One of the album’s real highlight is the duet “She Let The Eagle Fly” where Rita sings together with the great American blues singer Ruthie Foster.
