Drummer, vocalist, and bandleader Roy Milton was born of Chickasaw Native and African-American parents on a reservation near Wynnewood, OK, in 1907. He grew up in Tulsa, got involved in the music scene there, migrated to California, and put together his first working band, the Solid Senders, in 1938. This first volume in the Classics Roy Milton chronology presents all of his earliest recordings, which predate his debut on Specialty Records in 1947. Right from the first few notes of pianist Camille Howard's introduction to "I'll Always Be in Love with You," it is clear why Lionel Hampton hastened to give Milton his first break by letting him cut four sides for the Hamp-Tone record label in September of 1945. This little band, with a gutsy front line of trumpeters Jimmy Nottingham and Hosea Sapp alongside growling tenor saxophonist Lorenzo "Buddy" Floyd, was firmly supported by Dave Robinson's walking string bass. The producers of this compilation were able to splice together the two parts of "Burma Road Blues," originally bifurcated for issue on both sides of a 78-rpm platter. The resulting seamless six-minute performance is a sobering testimonial describing a soldier's plight in the Pacific during World War II. Singing lyrics apparently written by Lionel Hampton, Milton describes leaving San Francisco when "everything was in bloom," landing in Australia, preparing for armed conflict in the Philippines, and ending up in Burma where the sky appeared to be on fire. Camille Howard proves herself a formidable boogie-woogie pianist capable of turning in the occasional tidy vocal. When Milton's band reassembled to wax four sides for the Juke Box label in December 1945, he had added alto saxophonist Earl Simms and cut down to one trumpeter, Hosea Sapp, an accomplished expressive manipulator of the mute. "Rhythm Cocktail" sounds like it came right out of the John Kirby Sextet band book. Both "Milton's Boogie" and "R.M. Blues" made it onto the Billboard R&B chart during the year 1946, Milton's first year as a record company owner and producer. Heard here in numerical sequence, 17 tracks document the very beginnings of Milton's record label, with ex-Basie alto saxophonist Caughey Roberts replacing Earl Simms. This allows listeners to enjoy a fairly unprecedented quantity of meaty alto sax solos from Roberts, who only made it onto eight studio recordings with Basie before being replaced by Earle Warren in early 1937. There are a few remakes of earlier recordings and a whole lot of pleasant surprises in this mixed bag of danceable blues, ballads, and swing. The closing track, a swell version of "My Blue Heaven" (with the mischievously altered lyric "...and the baby makes eight") issued on Special Records in 1946, appears to have been recorded live with additional doo wop backing by an unidentified squad of cool vocalists. ~arwulf arwulf

As in-the-pocket drummer of his own jump blues combo, the Solid Senders, Roy Milton was in a perfect position to drive his outfit just as hard or soft as he so desired. With his stellar sense of swing, Milton did just that; his steady backbeat on his 1946 single for Art Rupe's fledgling Juke Box imprint, "R.M. Blues," helped steer it to the uppermost reaches of the R&B charts (his assured vocal didn't hurt either). Milton spent his early years on an Indian reservation in Oklahoma (his maternal grandmother was a Native American) before moving to Tulsa. He sang with Ernie Fields's territory band during the late '20s and began doubling on drums when the band's regular trapsman got arrested one fateful evening. In the mood to leave Fields in 1933, Milton wandered west to Los Angeles and formed the Solid Senders. 1945 was a big year for him -- along with signing with Juke Box (soon to be renamed Specialty), the band filmed three soundies with singer June Richmond.

"R.M. Blues" was such a huge seller that it established Specialty as a viable concern for the long haul. Rupe knew a good thing when he saw it, recording Milton early and often through 1953. Drummer and vocalist Roy Milton was one of the first artists signed to Juke Box Records, the label that became Specialty, and his "R.M. Blues" was a factor in getting the label capitalized. The Solid Senders came about, in part, because of the growing economic unfeasibility of the big bands. The streamlining that followed had a dramatic and interesting effect, first highlighting simpler, punchier, and more direct arrangements over a firm rhythmic backing, and then by the directions it led -- listening to the 1947 "Milton's Boogie" is an instant education in the roots of rock and roll. The powerhouse piano riffs and short solos from Camille Howard will be nothing unusual if you've heard many of the primary white rock and roll records. Roy Milton, though, specialized in solid rhythm and blues with a big dose of boogie (here given the assistance of Camille Howard's smokin' piano -- the delicate, fluttering right hand, and the stomp-boogie left; she's one of the great unsung r&b piano players). There are elements of big band arrangements creeping in amongst the horn riffs and walking blues basslines -- "Everything I Do Is Wrong" sneaks in more than a few horn mutes and wahs. For the most part, Milton's drumming is serviceable, rather than great (he does take a solo here and there, and sounds fine doing so, but the dictates of drumming and singing make both something of a compromise). In audio terms, the digital transfer is superb -- there's still acetate noise, but far less than on some of these releases, and it's not a bother. The sound is well rounded, with a nice bass and midrange and clean highs. The original recording media was free (thankfully) of tape hiss, so the end result is excellent, and certainly very easy to recommend. In keeping with Specialty's "Legends" releases, the CD is loaded up with bonus tracks -- nine in this case. That only makes it more of a value. This is good music, folks -- don't pass it up because of its age. People will still be listening to Roy Milton and company when the latest hype has gone to cutout heaven, never to be seen again. -- Allmusic.

The Historic Rhythm & Blues Extravaganza That Rocked The 1970 Monterey Jazz Festival

The blues never has been, to my recollection, the occasion for a more joyous celebration of its uniquely vibrant spirit than on a certain day in the late summer of 1970, when Johnny Otis brought his entire azure-indigo caravan of giants to spread their talents over an afternoon on the fairgrounds at Monterey, California. Here was the consummate proof that where today's music may set up communication and generation gaps, the blues destroys them. On stage, where Shuggie Otis, 16; rhythm guitarist Jim (Supe) Bradshaw, 23; singers Margie Evans and Delmar "Mighty Mouth" (no relation) Evans, both in their 20's; and the rest of the singing and blowing battalion representing every decade on up to Pee Wee Crayton and Big Joe Turner, both in their very late 50's, and Roy Milton, who's up there at the Social Security borderline.

The same with the roaring receptive, over capacity audience. Those who stood up on their seats hollering and testifying, or boogalooed along the aisles, were mostly in the 15-25 bracket, while others, less extroverted, exchanged reminiscences about the first time they had heard the call of the blues, perhaps at some half-remembered dance in the 30's, or on a 78 record player at high school in the 40's and 50's. That's what this album is all about. This is no gallery of museum pieces set up to rekindle a lost past, no futile exercise in nostalgia; instead it is a meeting ground were ages, races, and backgrounds coalesce, where grooving together is all that matters. /Leonard Feather

Think about the Dootone label. Chances are, you'll initially think about the great group records that 'label prexy' - as the trade mags used to say - Dootsie Williams cut and issued (or sometimes didn't issue) in the label's decade-plus of active life. Not too surprising really, especially when you review a roster that, during its life span, included the Penguins, Medallions, Calvanes, Cuff Links and Meadowlarks, and recordings that include such doo wop perennials as Heaven And Paradise, Hey Senorita, Buick '59 and Earth Angel... But to regard these magnificent groups, and their equally magnificent recordings, as the be-all and end-all of Dootone is to do the rest of the label's output a terrible disservice. Dootsie Williams also recorded lots of classy West Coast blues, raucous honkers, cool South Central cocktail grooves and a copious quantity of riotous R&B rockers. And all this without taking into account a vast trench of "Party Records" by the late African-American comic Redd Foxx - which, as the saying goes, is another story...

Stalwart Ace aficionados have been hoping for this set for a long time. I'm happy to tell 'em that the wait was worth it. Dootone R&B is yet another valuable addition to Ace's ongoing documentation and preservation of California-created Rhythm And Blues. Hey Dig this Groovy Boogie from Dootsie's tape booty. As in-the-pocket drummer of his own jump blues combo, the Solid Senders, Roy Milton was in a perfect position to drive his outfit just as hard or soft as he so desired. With his stellar sense of swing, Milton did just that; his steady backbeat on his 1946 single for Art Rupe's fledgling Juke Box imprint, "R.M. Blues," helped steer it to the uppermost reaches of the R&B charts (his assured vocal didn't hurt either).

Milton spent his early years on an Indian reservation in Oklahoma (his maternal grandmother was a Native American) before moving to Tulsa. He sang with Ernie Fields's territory band during the late '20s and began doubling on drums when the band's regular trapsman got arrested one fateful evening. In the mood to leave Fields in 1933, Milton wandered west to Los Angeles and formed the Solid Senders. 1945 was a big year for him -- along with signing with Juke Box (soon to be renamed Specialty), the band filmed three soundies with singer June Richmond.

Two discs 75 and 76 minutes each approximately. The sound is good to fair, with occasional surface noise. These sides, all recorded between 1946-1949 are from a man known to most as an r&b artist of some repute. Milton himself shows up on several tracks here, with his group the Solid Senders.

This collection is a treasure trove of r&b with a few blues sides, from both well known artists and some lesser known. The more well known singer/musicians include, besides Milton, Maxwell Davis and his Orchestra, Paul Gayten Trio and Roy Brown and his Orchestra. As is often the case, it's the lesser known artists here that are the greatest surprise. This collection has a number of artists like Effie Smith, Jesse Thomas and Little Miss Cornshucks, who will be unknown except to real fans of this music. However, their tracks are every bit the equal of the well known people above. Together, these tracks make up some of the best big-city r&b of the era. Percy Mayfield - Specialty Profiles (2-Disc set)

Percy Mayfield was blessed with an emotive Louisiana baritone and a poet's sensibility to sadness and pain, and few songwriters in the history of pop or R&B have written a body of work so drenched in beautiful suffering. This set features Mayfield's major hits for Art Rupe's Specialty Records, a label that Mayfield recorded for from 1950 until 1954 before leaving for Chess Records (the bonus disc included here is simply a sampler for other artists who recorded for Specialty). Given depth and atmosphere by Maxwell Davis' saxophone textures, songs like "Cry Baby" and "Please Send Me Someone to Love" were carefully written R&B symphonies to the harsh realities and downside of romance, and at times that downside morphed into relentless darkness, as is the case with the excessively maudlin "The River's Invitation," which is just this side of a melodic suicide note. Also here is the wonderful (and relatively upbeat) "Louisiana" as well as Mayfield's original version of his signature song, "Hit the Road Jack," which Ray Charles would cover and turn into a huge hit. In all, this makes a nice introduction to Mayfield's early work and spotlights his considerable skill as a songwriter.
