Chief may not have been the most successful or prolific of blues labels, but few can doubt that its musical impact far outweighed its output. Spanning just five years from 1957 to 1961, this compilation contains many of the musical highlights that resulted. Including the likes of Elmore James, Earl Hooker, Lillian Offitt and Junior Wells.
While only in business for five years (1957-1961) the small Chief label nonetheless recorded some fine examples of post-war electric blues. This set focuses primarily on several well known artists--Earl Hooker, Junior Wells, Magic Sam, and Elmore James. But also here are good sides from Lillian Offitt, Melvin Simpson, Frank Butler, Bobby and Lucy, and G. "Davy" Crockett. These lesser known performers really add some depth and even more interest, in contrast to the harder blues styles of the name artists.
Besides some well known tracks by Junior Wells, Elmore James, and Magic Sam, there's some good instrumentals by Earl Hooker (sometimes with Wells on harp) that are great, swinging examples of Hooker's incendiary, guitar playing. Junior Wells acquits himself just fine with several examples of his soulful vocals and bluesy harp style. Magic Sam does have some good examples of his West Side guitar style, but his sides here don't quite match his earlier Cobra singles for pure excitement. Elmore James is frequently on fire ("The Twelve Year Old Boy") and he does a good job on his cuts. And when you include some pretty good sides from Butler ("I Can't Believe It"), Offitt ("The Man Won't Work") and Simpson ("I Love My Baby"), this set is well worth hearing.
