Dear Cats and Kittens, dig this cool array of killer black Rock and Roll from the "Golden Age" of American music. So many similar projects were devoted through the years to white rock and rollers (even the most obscure and unknown) and very little to the people that not only "originated" this music and played it long before white musicians started to fool around with it. They also continued to play it when black Rhythm and Blues music was suddenly re-named "Rock and Roll" to appeal to a wider white audience in segregated America and became a multi-racial genre in the mid-1950s. Some tunes are pretty well-known but the vast majority are not. I'm pretty sure you have never heard a lot of the tracks included here - even if a lot of them were pretty popular in the 1950s among both black and white Rock and Roll fans. Most of the artists in this new collection were actually household names in the "Rock and Roll World" of the 50s and early 60s. "The blues had a baby and they called it rock & roll," a statement that comes true in the "Boss Black Rockers" series. After all, long before the whites threw themselves into the black rhythm & blues and renamed it rock-and-roll, the genre was already the perfect outlet for the black community. Just like the previous 3 volumes in this sublime series, volume 4 "Slow Down" also offers 28 beautiful songs from the "Golden Age of American Music", collected by Little Victor. Solomon Burke starts with "Be Bop Grandma" and immediately shows that he could rock quite a bit before he became more known as a soul artist. Lillia Lavell White aka Miss La-Vell, with a powerful voice, also delivers a beautiful performance in "Teen-Age Love". A lady who could certainly outweigh Etta James. Another class bin is "Fat Gal" by Otis Redding & The Pinetoppers. Raw, honest and full of emotion. Otis also had it all before he gained world fame in the soul. Energetic doo-wop in an exquisite rock-and-roll way serve The Midnighters on "Rock Granny Roll". Pretty number! The title track "Slow Down" is a song that was often covered, even The Beatles did it. Nothing beats the original Larry Williams, as it turns out here. Hill Billy Blues from Clear Waters and his Band has a Chuck Berry groove. Top-level doo-wop can be enjoyed to the fullest on The El Venos "Geraldine", a song from 1956. Finally you can go crazy on an instrumental with "The Party Stomp" by The Egyptians.
You should certainly not interpret the title of this compilation literally. There is no question of "Slow Down" at all, of horny, overwhelming rhythm & blues and rock and roll all the more. Wow what an album!

I wonder how the hell they manage at the KokoMojo label, to put together a series every time that is extremely fascinating, where there is no room for inferior songs and that also makes you eagerly looking forward to the next release . All this certainly applies to the "Boss Black Rockers" series. A series that will contain 10 albums and where we have reached 'Part 3 with' Rockin 'Shoes'. Once again, composer Little Victor Mac, aka The "Mojo" Man, has again distilled a fine portion of rock and roll songs from the "golden age of American music". With striker Big Al Downings released 'Yes I'm Loving You' in 1960, we are immediately in that formidable rock-and-roll mood created by Little Victor. The Swallows fit in seamlessly with "Itchy Twitchy Feeling", including a blistering sax solo. From then on, energetic, formidable and danceable fifties rock and roll songs follow each other at lightning speed. It is impossible to name highlights, because all tracks deserve the label 'gandioos'. Just listen to "Boom Chica Boom" by Kenny Esquire And The Starlites, rock-n-roll and doowop masterfully mixed together. Many songs you hear here for the first time and afterwards it is difficult to understand why they could not reach the general public at the time. One who could do that was Ray Sharpe, here with the well known "Linda Lu". Massively rousing, including an overly enthusiastic audience, is Etta James 'version of Ray Charles' 'What I Say'. For an instrumental you have to wait until track number 25. The Duals give away a nice sample of a guitar-driven hot-rod song with 'Stick Shift'.
In short, you will not be given peace of mind on this album, but if you want to go crazy and banish your daily hassle, this is the disc for you. ~Lambert Smits

African American music, especially blues and rhythm "n" blues, gave the hillbilly and country sound of the 30s and 40s the wings, or rather the hips, to start a worldwide triumph as rock "n" roll. Dear Cats and Kittens, dig this cool array of killer black Rock and Roll from the Golden Age of American music. So many similar projects were devoted through the years to white rock and rollers (even the most obscure and unknown) and very little to the people that not only originated this music and played it long before white musicians started to fool around with it. They also continued to play it when black Rhythm and Blues music was suddenly re-named Rock and Roll to appeal to a wider white audience in segregated America and became a multi-racial genre in the mid-1950s. Some tunes are pretty well-known but the vast majority are not. I'm pretty sure you have never heard a lot of the tracks included here - even if a lot of them were pretty popular in the 1950s among both black and white Rock and Roll fans. Most of the artists in this new collection were actually household names in the Rock and Roll World of the 50s and early 60s. I sure hope this new series of 10 complimentary volumes will finally set things straight. Dig it!
