Living Blues Most Outstanding Musician (harmonica) award winner Omar Coleman was born and raised on the West Side of Chicago. A powerhouse vocalist and harmonica player with a commanding stage presence, Coleman is one of the leading voices in modern Chicago blues with a style deeply rooted in West Side soul. He has toured internationally, bringing gritty blues authenticity with funk-driven grooves and high-energy showmanship to audiences the world over for more than 15 years, earning him a reputation as a modern torchbearer of Chicago's strong musical legacy.

Blues Music Award nominee Igor Prado is widely-regarded as one of the most exciting contemporary blues guitarists on the international scene today. The self-taught, left-handed Prado, who plays a right-handed guitar upside down, delivers scorching solos and vintage tone with an ability to move seamlessly between blues, soul, and funk. His 2015 album with Igor Prado Band, Way Down South, with the Delta Groove All Stars held the number one slot on the Living Blues Radio chart for two months, placed #6 for the year and earned a BMA nomination for Best New Artist Debut. It’s the core philosophy of astute curiosity that’s established Omar Coleman as a rising star with iron-clad longevity in the national blues scene. Hailing from the West Side of Chicago, Coleman grew up entrenched in soul music and black music that defined the era in the mid-90s. Working as a barber by trade, Coleman recalls being bored at his shop on Michigan & Adams in Downtown Chicago and sauntering to the music shop down the street to pick up an instrument to pass the time. He landed on the harmonica thinking it would be easy to learn quickly and would fiddle around on it between cutting hair and usurping the shoeshine guy’s chair when he went to shine shoes in the back. With many clients being musicians, Coleman would learn about Chicago being heralded as ‘Home of the Blues’ and was tipped off to legends such as Buddy Guy, Howlin’ Wolf, and more. Another world opened up.

Fast forward to 2020 after tours to Brazil, Japan, and Europe and headlining shows & festival plays as both a solo artist and harmonica player (including the award-winning Sean Carney Band who won the International Blues Challenge) where Coleman found himself flying to Denver, Colorado to work on ‘Strange Times,’ produced by Eddie Roberts of The New Mastersounds. With Roberts at the helm as a master of analog recording techniques and capturing vintage tones, much of the composition work was done in the studio that allowed Coleman the space to expand his style into danceable, soulful groove music and craft lyrics to float over them. The result lands him in the same blues and soul revival category with artists like Charles Bradley, Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, Gary Clark Jr. and more.

Omar Coleman brings his band from the west side of Chicago to forge one of the best blues or soul resurrection albums in recent recollection, maybe longer. There is definitely a funkiness to the album, not an overproduced product of drum machines and industrial noises, but the sound of an ultra-tight band that demonstrates its capabilities through its wide range of music influences. However, a cohesive sound, the album delivers what albums used to deliver, a definitive sound for the band and its voice Omar Coleman.
This is the third album from Chicago blues vocalist and harp player Omar Coleman. The two prior releases are found on legendary Delmark Records and also features the same lineup. This album focuses on west side favorites and originals by Omar Coleman and his band leader Pete Galanis (guitar), who also serves as producer to the album. A fat layer of funk permeates the album throughout, with soul numbers and blues from opposing corners of the spectrum lay the blanket of American music across the room that is Westside Soul. The album starts off running with the funky upbeat number Sweet Little Woman , and immediately followed by an up-tempo rendition of the Ray Charles classic Lets Go Get Stoned. Let The Babies Live, a powerhouse groove number with some blistering guitar licks, provides social commentary on Chicago and National headlines, while Jody Got Your Girl and Gone brings back images of the early 1970s with that funk number. I Let A Good Girl Go is a dead-on cover of the Syl Johnson classic, while Good Provider proves Coleman is nothing short of a soul artist himself, who may be known more as a bluesman. Additional originals: Rotten Old Lady and Someones There When I m Not Home and Give Me the Green Light add the up-tempo funky soul and blues numbers to the pot of soul stew the band is cooking. The powerhouse blues number Going Down that was popularized by Freddie King, gives the original a run for its money, and may be the only cover of that song that has done so over the past 40+ years. Poignantly, the haunting Whisper to a Moan rounds out the album as the finale in this soon to be classic album. The Band:This marks the fourth release for the band, the third release with Omar Coleman on vocals ( Born and Raised , Omar Coleman Live ) both released on Delmark Records. Pete Galanis (Howard and the White Boys) contributes songwriting and a lyrical pen to a few songs, as well as production. Gifted grinder Neal O hara (The Heard) makes his mark on several tunes, playing Hammond organ and grand piano that give depth to the sound. Jazz guitar player turned blues bassist Ari Seder shows just how low can you go, keeping an anchor on this bunch with veteran blues drummer Marty Binder (Albert King, Albert Collins) keeping the rhythm section pumping. When not touring Europe, south America, or around the USA playing rhythm and blues festivals, the band in some shape or form can be heard playing live in Chicago, in particular, at Rosas Blues Lounge on the west side of Chicago.

Kenny Smith was unquestionably born into blues royalty. He grew up in the same house where Muddy Waters once lived in Chicago, the home of the blues. Throughout his childhood, Kenny was surrounded by Muddy and his friends, which included his own father, Willie “Big Eyes” Smith (1936-2011). These same blues icons helped mold him into the person and drummer he is today and later in life asked him to provide his famous backbeat on some of the largest and most respected stages and recordings in the world. Kenny has played over 9,500 live performances to date and has earned the right to wear that royal blues crown. His father, Willie “Big Eyes” Smith, played drums for the Muddy Waters’ Band in the early 1960’s and then again from 1968 through 1980 and was featured on all of Muddy’s Grammy winning albums. Kenny “Beedy Eyes” Smith, one of the best known living blues drummers today, learned 99% of what he knows about drumming from his father and was also inspired by acclaimed drummers: Odie Payne, Fred Below, Earl Phillips, Louie Bellson, S.P. Leary, Francis Clay and Art Blakey, Sonny Payne, Clifton James and many others who paved the way. And with those experiences Kenny has revitalized and created new interpretations of the blues drummers as he pushes blues drumming to new innovative and tradition styles.

2010 marked year four of Blues For A Cure and our first event at the historic Lincoln Theatre in downtown Columbus. To celebrate that distinction, we welcomed Blues Music Award winner Duke Robillard and his wonderful band from Rhode Island as our headliners. I first saw Duke perform in Columbus in the early '90s at The Big Bear Rhythm & Food Festival, and he quickly became one of my very favorite guitarists – I’m not the only one.
We kept our International Blues Challenge tradition going by welcoming 2005 IBC/Albert King Award winner Jonn Richardson back from Houston, Texas (Jonn’s third year of BFAC!) and expanded upon the “international” theme with a very special appearance from Italian guitarist Enrico Crivellaro. We also decided to include Central Ohio blues legend guitarist/singer Ray Fuller who has been playing the blues in Columbus for well over 30 years. Duke Robillard was incredibly gracious and generous with his time, agreeing not only to hang out all weekend and join us in this recording session, but also to host a Blues Guitar Master Class at The Jazz Academy the next night.
Of course, Blues For A Cure isn’t all about the guitar, and this year we invited two outstanding harmonica players to participate. Young Chicago bluesman Omar Coleman (thanks to Honey Bee Records) has been a part of BFAC since the very beginning, and he’s not missed one yet. Although, this is the first time his schedule has permitted him to record with us. San Francisco based Phil Berkowitz also joined us with his swinging brand of harp work. Hammond B-3 organ boss Jon Eshelman performed with us for the first time, along with veteran drummers Louis Tsamous and Jan Roll. The bassists on this recording are The Sean Carney Band’s Steve Perakis and my dad, Larry Carney.
Our first two Blues Cures recording sessions took place at Central City Recording Studio in Columbus, but due to relocating the studio, we opted for Tony’s Treasures Recording Studio in Cadiz, Ohio. Mark and Cody have done an incredible job with Tony’s Treasures. The studio proved a relaxed and warm atmosphere, following the snowy drive from Columbus that nearly had us pulling the plug!
We went with a guitar “tag team” approach on most of the tunes, pairing guitarists in some masterful combinations on an incredibly varied set of material that ranges from lowdown to uptown and touches all of the bases between. With an abundance of vocalists on hand, this recording offers even more variation, allowing every one of our singers to take the microphone for at least one song, at times taking on a Johnny Otis style revue feeling that truly offers something for everyone.
I started writing these notes with the intention of highlighting a few inspirational moments, but was left with the conclusion that each and every track is magical in its own way. There were just too many moments to recall. I will, however, say that it was a true bucket list item for me to record with Duke Robillard! We selected an old Big Joe Turner classic, “Cherry Red,” as a tribute to our late, mutual friend Jimmy “T-99” Nelson. I also particularly enjoyed Ray Fuller and Omar Coleman going acoustic on Muddy’s “Whose Gonna Be Your Sweet Man When I’m Gone,” a one take thing of beauty that had all of the musicians in the studio on their feet! I’m sure you’ll have special moments of your own as you enjoy this recording. Blues Cures Studio Jam Vol. 3 is an incredible addition to a recorded legacy that already includes such stalwarts as Jimmy Thackery, Henry Gray, Trampled Under Foot, J.P. Soars, “King Saxe” Gene Walker, Bill Stuve, Steve Gerard, Ricky Nye, Micah Kesselring, The Matt O’Ree Band and some of the players on this volume. The collective passion of these musicians, and all involved in this project to battle a dreaded disease, is what brought us together.
