John Grimaldi, known as Studebaker John, was born in Chicago in 1952. With over fifty years in the music scene, he’s a true veteran of Chicago blues. Instead of sticking to the usual covers, John writes his own songs, blending raw power with skillful technique. His authenticity, dedication, and originality have earned him praise worldwide.

Growing up in an Italian-American neighborhood, John was influenced by his father and picked up the harmonica at just seven years old. He spent a lot of time on the iconic Maxwell Street, where the blues he heard laid the groundwork for his artistic identity. A pivotal moment came when he saw Hound Dog Taylor & The Houserockers perform. Captivated by the slide guitar and the energy of the music, John committed himself to slide guitar and Chicago blues.

In the 1970s, he formed his band, Studebaker John & The Hawks, and released his first album, ‘Straight No Chaser’, in 1978. In the early 1990s, he gained recognition in Europe with albums like ‘Born To Win’ and ‘Nothin’ But Fun’, and he has remained a fixture on the international stage ever since. With 21 albums under his belt, his live shows are known for their high energy and connection with the audience. John delivers the blues as he knows it: raw and genuine. His performances in clubs and festivals worldwide affirm his reputation as a skilled artist.

Some musicians are triple threats, but Studebaker John Grimaldi ups that to quintuple. He's a talented guitarist, harp player, and singer, along with being a more than adequate songwriter and sturdy producer. His tenth release since 1994 is overstuffed with a dozen solid blues-rockers and boogie tunes that maxes out at just over 78 minutes. While a few tracks could perhaps have been pruned and some left off entirely, this is still an exciting, even explosive set that will satiate old fans and might even bring new ones into the fold.

Grimaldi expands his basic Chicago electric blues palette by adding organ and especially Latin percussion to a handful of key songs such as the opening eight-minute "Down at the Bottom" and the nearly 12-minute "Follow Your Soul." The results help energize the already spirited proceedings, even if it plants him firmly in classic Santana territory. As usual it's a toss up between whether he's a better harpist or guitarist, in particular when he pulls out his Paul Butterfield/Little Walter styled harmonica on the Chicago shuffle "Tell Me So" and blows tough on the throbbing swamp beat of "Natural Born Boogie," one of this disc's more jaw-dropping performances.

Most impressive, though, is that once again these songs raise the lyrical and melodic ante with the midtempo closing title track an album highlight. Vocally Grimaldi falls somewhere between the Fabulous Thunderbirds' Kim Wilson's road hardened croon, and John Hiatt's Midwestern gruffness. His singing is gutsy, impassioned, and far superior to many other guitar slingers that treat vocals as little more than a necessary evil. As producer, he even overdubs his voice occasionally to stirring effect. The result is another quality project from a guy who has a history of remarkably consistent music that displays his many talents. Taking his stage name from an automobile he once owned, Studebaker John Grimaldi was a product of the vibrant blues scene of Chicago's West Side. Born November 5, 1952, his father was himself an amateur musician, and as a youngster, Grimaldi began playing the many instruments lying about the house. Becoming a fixture at the open-air flea markets in the Maxwell Street area - a venue for countless blues buskers - he began focusing on harmonica after catching performances from the likes of Little Walter and Sonny Boy Williamson; after taking in a Hound Dog Taylor club date, Grimaldi also turned to guitar.

He formed the blues-rock band the Hawks during the early '70s as a showcase for his reedy vocals, primal harp sound, and blistering slide guitar skills, and in the years to follow also developed into a fine songwriter. While keeping his day job as a construction worker, Grimaldi began recording during the mid-'80s, issuing a live Netherlands set later re-released domestically as Rockin' the Blues '85. His next major release was 1994's Too Tough, followed in 1995 by Outside Lookin' In. Growing up in Chicago, Grimaldi’s father played guitar and he heard live performances by several noted blues masters including Howlin’ Wolf, J.B. Hutto, Little Walter, Muddy Waters and Sonny Boy Williamson. He taught himself to play harmonica and guitar, building his style on these artists but swiftly developing a distinctive manner. In the 70s he formed a band and adopted his stage name in reference to a prized car he owned, a 1963 Studebaker Silver Hawk. Meanwhile, Grimaldi maintained employment on construction sites, playing the blues at night in Chicago’s clubs. Grimaldi recorded in the late 70s with Robert ‘Mojo’ Elem, Mojo Boogie (1978), and his own-name debut came in the mid-80s. However, the album was not released in the USA until the mid-90s. Meanwhile, Grimaldi had secured a recording contract with Blind Pig Records that soon brought his hard-edged no-nonsense playing to a wider audience. In 2004 he made his mainstream solo debut, releasing Between Life & Death on the Avanti label (an earlier acoustic release was only available from the artist’s own website).

Grimaldi’s slide guitar playing is powerful and exciting as is his harmonica work. His singing, while not as vital as his instrumental work is also interesting, especially when he performs his own compositions. These songs, while couched in traditional form are contemporary in content and attitude. ~AMG

"Between Life & Death" is more modern and rocking blues than some of John's earlier CDs. He doesn't have Stevie Ray Vaughan's or Melvin Taylor dazzling style but possesses a very, very solid technique. His voice is rangy like John Hiatt's, and he knows when to use it and just as importantly, when not to. His blues harp may not be present on every track but he can blow it like the best of them when called for. That live feeling really permeates the record, and the musicians John brought along are seasoned and fit the music like a glove. This one's chock full of the good stuff.

"Promise of Love” began as a personal project (song demo) but after finishing the recording, Studebaker John thought he would offer it to fans as a limited edition CD because it was so different from previous releases. After receiving overwhelming response, it was remastered and new artwork was created. This is a solo acoustic recording of 14 original compositions. Many songs from this CD have gone on to be recorded with the full band. Though partially acoustic, John’s spirit shines through and everything moves along nicely.

A bluesman from Chicago who doesn't perform any covers is a rarity indeed, but John Grimaldi, aka Studebaker John, has stuck to his guns throughout his career, and this 2001 release is a good indication why. While his melodies are serviceable, the guitarist/harpist/singer writes sharp, smart lyrics that are far more provocative than what most contemporary bluesmen churn out. Add tough vocals that place him between Darrell Nulisch and Stevie Ray Vaughan and a sizzling attack that never seems phoned in for a 50-minute set, and you wonder what more it would take for this gutsy, obviously inspired bluesman to get traction, even in a market saturated by talented players.

Along with his other talents, Grimaldi also produced this disc, and the stripped-down yet full sound is raw and driven yet accessible. Songs such as the opening "Burned by Love" and "Rich Man" boast melodies that are far more creative and dramatically arranged than the genre exercises most bluesmen work in. He blows serious Little Walter-inspired amplified harp on the "Juke"-styled instrumental "Harpology," and the driving Bo Diddley beat of "Nothing Comes Easy" pushes this disc into the red zone. The slow, sexy grind of "Lock & Chain" gives Grimaldi a chance to display his impressive vocals and a slide guitar tone with Elmore James nuances.

A few by-the-numbers party boogie burners such as "Don't You Take It" sound like warmed-over Fabulous Thunderbirds, but Grimaldi plays everything with enough enthusiasm and warmth to make listeners forget that they may have heard some of these tunes done by other bands, just with different titles. Regardless, there is plenty here for blues lovers to sink their teeth into, and the best moments are terrific examples of contemporary blues at its most propulsive. /Hal Horowitz, AllMusic

Evidently it must be difficult to grab the attention of blues fans without this type of eye-catching gimmick. Well, as far as the music goes, If This Is Love...I'd Rather Have the Blues contains 13 decent previously released tracks from Blind Pig Records with a heartbreak, romance, and don't-get-caught theme including LLoyd Jones, Jimmy Thackery & the Drivers, Debbie Davis, Studebaker John & the Hawks, Renee Austin, John Mooney, Big Bill Morganfield, and Chris Cain. Let's hope labels like Blind Pig will stick to signing passionate blues players and releasing budget-priced comps to attract listeners without the need to use sexy promotional campaigns. ~ by Al Campbell

Studebaker John Grimaldi was born in Chicago in 1952 and heard the blues firsthand from Big Walter Horton, "One-Armed" John Wrencher, Johnny Littlejohn and other regulars on Maxwell Street. "I can remember a time when you could see Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, he'd play in his own club, Hound Dog Taylor would always be around Maxwell Street. J.B. Hutto, too. Being able to see them perform live was breathtaking. I'm basically self-taught and I'd pick things up by just watching them."

He also took to heart their advice about developing his own style. He recalls, "The old guys, like Walter Horton, gave me the best advice when they told me not to try to sound like them, but to sound like myself. To me, blues is really finding the heart of the music and putting yourself into it."

In addition to the aforementioned artists, John lists his harmonica influences as Little Walter, both Sonny Boys, and Paul Butterfield. On guitar he names Albert Collins, Albert King, Freddie King, and Elmore James.

Studebaker John has always had one foot in the blues and one foot in rock & roll, but always liked the RAW less-is-more sound, that he first heard on Chicago's Maxwell St. Artists that recorded blues and R&B songs like Elvis, Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Jimmy Reed, Freddy King, Slim Harpo all had hit records played on the AM radio Top 100. Then Bob Dylan shook things up with his going electric at the Newport Folk Festival (using the Butterfield Blues Band as his back up). Then came the English bands and some of them were very good, still a RAW sound, even louder and faster than before. But enough of history. This album is one for the people,14 all new original songs called Old School Rockin'.

Taking his stage name from an automobile he once owned, Studebaker John Grimaldi was a product of the vibrant blues scene of Chicago's West Side. Born November 5, 1952, his father was himself an amateur musician, and as a youngster, Grimaldi began playing the many instruments lying about the house. Becoming a fixture at the open-air flea markets in the Maxwell Street area -- a venue for countless blues buskers -- he began focusing on harmonica after catching performances from the likes of Little Walter and Sonny Boy Williamson; after taking in a Hound Dog Taylor club date, Grimaldi also turned to guitar. He formed the blues-rock band the Hawks during the early '70s as a showcase for his reedy vocals, primal harp sound, and blistering slide guitar skills, and in the years to follow also developed into a fine songwriter. While keeping his day job as a construction worker, Grimaldi began recording during the mid-'80s, issuing a live Netherlands set later re-released domestically as Rockin' the Blues '85. His next major release was 1994's Too Tough, followed in 1995 by Outside Lookin' In. In 1994, Blind Pig released John's first nationally distributed album, entitled Too Tough. Fully displaying John's beguiling musical talents, it was an immediate favorite with blues radio programmers and it claimed a strong position on the blues charts for many months after its release. The radio trade Hard Report called it "a sound that could only come out of the collective blues history of Chicago. A CD full of originals is refreshing and when it's this hot, Mrs. O'Leary's cow would be proud." A couple of the tracks appear on the soundtrack of the award-winning Canadian art film called "Exotica", directed by Atom Egoyan.

Note: Studebaker John appears to be entering that point in his life where he's gonna do the kind of music that he wants to do... Though at one time, his blues would melt paint it was so hot (and that was whether he had his guitar or harmonica blazin'), now-he obviously wants to remember the days of the famed Maxwell St up in Chicago. In talking with him a few years ago, Maxwell St and that era of blues music was one of his favorite subjects. I'm glad he's headed this way musically, even though I was a fan of his early hot blues as well. There were some who were critical of those early CD's-though I'm not sure entirely why...Well-here's one for those past critics.
 This new disc is real straight up Chicago Blues, and he even ends it with a very cool twist. He's entirely vintage on this new recording, and like I said in the title of the review-his stuff is original music. I'm not going to go into great details about each tune-go to the samples, they should be enough for any Blues fan to want to purchase this new recording. The twist-to add to the authenticity of this one is this: He found someone with a old "Recordio" machine who still had some old blanks, and recorded the last track onto a old Recordio album, and then put in on CD. This last tune-"Bad Gasoline" is as authentic sounding as it comes, and definitely takes you back to the days of old 78's. (Note-if you don't know what a Recordio or 78 is-you're younger, and you need to look it up). Congrats to you Mr Grimaldi-heck of job (and your great band of musicians), I hope this one will please many, and even turn some folks on to discover a great period of Blues music...
