For a sense of the blues at its most tangible, one needs to look no further than singer/guitarist Percy Strother, who triumphed over incredible tragedy to create music of genuine pain and sorrow. Born July 23, 1946 in Vicksburg, Mississippi, he was still a child when his father died violently; his mother passed away shortly afterward, and rather than submitting to life in an orphanage, Strother simply took to the road. He drifted from job to job for a number of years, all the while fighting a battle with alcoholism; discovering the blues turned his life around, however, and after sobering up he began teaching himself guitar, honing his chops in virtual anonymity before recording his debut LP A Good Woman Is Hard to Find in 1992. The Highway Is My Home followed in 1995, and in 1997 Strother returned with It's My Time. He toured Europe several times and recorded Home at Last there, which saw release in 2001. A legend in his adopted home of Minneapolis, Percy Strother was diagnosed with liver cancer and passed away May 29, 2005. ~Bio by Jason Ankeny

Bridget Kelly Band's "Bone Rattler" CD entered in at #2 on the RMR "Electric Blues" Album chart the week of May 20th, 2017. For the week of May 27th, 2017, Bone Rattler remained at #2 on the "Electric Blues" chart, was #47 on the RMR Top-50 "Blues Album" chart; entered in at #8 on the RMR Blues Singles chart, with the song "What You Need".

Based out of North Central Florida and inspired by classic & contemporary blues, the Bridget Kelly Band has placed their unique stamp on the "electric blues" genre, with high-energy live performances and a hybrid sound that mixes Texas, Chicago, and Memphis Blues with various Southern Blues traditions and blues-rock of the 1960's and 70's. The powerful and sultry vocals of singer Bridget Kelly and the incendiary lead guitar work of Tim Fik forge a signature hybrid sound that combines female urban blues with riff-driven rockin' blues guitar; held together by a dynamic rhythm section comprised of Alex Klausner on drums and Mark Armbrecht on bass. The Bridget Kelly Band has been performing at blues clubs, concerts, and festivals throughout the United States, and recently at the "Women in Blues" Showcase in Memphis, TN during the International Blues Challenge (IBC) (Jan 30-Feb 4, 2017). R.I.P. Sandy Ross: June 24, 1950 - May 6, 2017

Sandy Ross has been entertaining audiences with her own special blend of contemporary folk and acoustic blues for more than four decades. Originally from Phoenix, Arizona, she spent the '70s in Los Angeles, working as a staff songwriter for Warner/Chappell Music and producing demos on a single-song basis for nine other major song publishers including: Filmways Music, MCA Music, and Screen Gems/EMI. During that decade she had songs recorded by Kim Carnes and Anne Murray at a time when they were at the height of their careers, and indie released an LP of her own performances (A Lady of a Different Time - 1971). She was a regular singer-songwriter throughout the greater Los Angeles area and also booked other performers of many different genres at various Hollywood live-performance venues, including the Los Angeles Performing Arts and Folklife Festival and the internationally-renown Bla-Bla Cafe.

Sandy released three indie recordings in the 90s and toured the greater US four times doing more than 48 live syndicated radio shows and 120 coffeehouse/bookstore performances. In 1995, her third album (and first CD), Portraits of Innocence made the FOLKDJ-L Top 50 and received airplay on folk shows on 387 radio stations including rotation play on 17 Americana reporting stations. The Portrait of Innocence cut, "All My Heroes Sang the Blues," not only made the Americana rotation, but was featured on the CBC in Canada and made Top 40 rotation play in Hong Kong, China during that same time period. In 1998 her CD, Coloring Outside the Lines also made the FOLKDJ-L Top 50 (at number 9) when it debuted and in 1999 both CDs were incorporated into the Smithsonian Institute Folkways catalog, in addition to the Fast Folk recordings she made for the two Los Angeles compilation albums. (Sandy has the distinction of being the only Los Angeles singer-songwriter to have been included on both LA Fast Folk compilations.)

In 2005 Sandy wrote and compiled the book A Place Called the Bla-Bla Cafe, which is an insiders look at Hollywood talent showcasing against the historically political backdrop of the 1970s. The book has received great reviews and accolades from indie book publishing organizations and readers' websites, including a 2007 Independent Publishers Book Award (IPPY).

Sandy's latest CD, Grandma's Got a Boombox, 2015, was exceptionally well received by the folk/acoustic music community. It reached number 14 on the Folk Radio Top 70, was on the charts for 6 months straight after its release, and at year end was the 53rd most played album of the year (out of the top 300). "Distant Campfire," from that album, reached number 6 on the Top Folk Songs chart, and was the 26th most played folk song for 2015.

Sometimes great recordings happen for simple reasons. When Sam Burckhardt asked me to help him put a band together to play the 2017 Basel Blues festival, I thought it was an opportunity to form a dream lineup of Chicago musicians who, because of the realities of making a living playing the local clubs, can’t always afford to play together in one band. Sam is originally from Basel, but he has been on the Chicago blues and jazz scene for over thirty years. He’s been returning to Switzerland to play the fest every year for over a decade, and I’ve had the honor of joining him there a few times with various bands. The idea to record the album, “One Room Blues,” came from a need to have something to sell at the blues festival, but producing this project quickly turned into a true labor of love. It became a unique chance to put together—in one room— musicians who could play many different styles of traditional blues and R&B with great technique and real soul.
Saxophonist Sam Burckhardt, drummer and recording engineer Alex Hall, pianist and organist Pete Benson, and upright bassist Beau Sample, each bring a love and respect for blues, jazz, and American roots music that lets them authentically play these styles without just imitating them for the sake of a recording session. We had a short turnaround time and a small window of only two days to record, but the energy in the sessions was infectious, and with the great Oscar Wilson bringing out the best in the band, we put together a recording that I’m truly proud to be a part of.
The album starts with the tune, “When I Was Young,” by Sunnyland Slim. Sam met the legendary Chicago blues pianist in 1975, and played with him for twenty years until Sunnyland’s death in 1995. Airway Records was originally Sunnyland’s label, and upon his death, Sam asked his widow if it was ok to continue Airway Records as a tribute. She agreed. It was a real treat to hear Oscar Wilson breathe new life into this blues classic, and this set the tone for a really fun session.
About this album, Oscar Wilson said of the experience, “I want to thank Joel Paterson, Sam Burckhardt, and the guys for taking me in another direction, into some jazzy, bluesy type things, you know what I’m saying? Because I knew I could do it, and they gave me a chance to do it.” To me, this record is a testament to Oscar’s blues scholarship and versatility; he does a beautiful job of channeling his heroes (like Percy Mayfield, Jimmy Reed, B.B. King, Ray Charles, and Bobby Blue Bland) as well as adding his own inimitable wit and delivery without mere imitation.
When I asked Oscar for album title suggestions, he mentioned “One Room Blues” in reference to the Mercy Dee Walton tune we recorded called “One Room Country Shack,” and to the fact we recorded in one room with no isolation or overdubs, at the wonderful studio, Reliable Recorders, run by Alex Hall. I think the name perfectly describes the mood of this intimate blues record, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed being a part of it.

A marvellous 4CD Boxset featuring Texas Alexander and friends. 92 tracks,all fully remastered. Compiled and annotated by Neil Slaven with full discography.
Born in Jowett, Texas in 1900, he played with the best - one of his early collaborations was with the guitarist Lonnie Johnson. Where he developed ned his prodigious voice is unknown, but by 1927 he was in Dallas working as a warehouseman and moonlighting as a singer in local clubs and bars. He was discovered by one of those record company scouts who were looking for performers to emulate the success of artists like Blind Lemon Jefferson and Charley Patton.

He was quickly guided to a recording studio where he recorded ten tracks. He had the uncanny luck to be accompanied on six tracks by ace guitarist Lonnie Johnson and on four by pianist Eddie Heywood. He had problems with keeping a regular tempo (probably because he usually sang unaccompanied) and few accompanists were better equipped to accommodate this.

Those first sides were successful enough for him to be recalled early the following year - again with Johnson's backing. He was on his way. The following years would see him in collaborations with Lightnin' Hopkins, Lowell Fulson and the Mississippi Sheiks. He would endure the Depression, a short stay in jail (for murder) and indifferent health.

He died in 1954, almost forgotten. His fame started to revive with the 'blues boom' of the 1960s. It's rarely wavered since. There are others here, too - 'Little Hat' Jones, Willie Reed and 'Suitcase' Johnson among them.

Shanda & The Howlers is a Rhythm & Blues revivalist band from Las Vegas, NV playing 50s-60s influenced R&B, Blues, & Soul
reminiscent of the Stax Sound. Influences in their sound can be traced to such artists as Big Maybelle, Ruth Brown, Otis Redding, The Crystals, LaVern Baker, and James Brown.

In the bands’ short history, they have played on bills with such legendary acts as The Blasters, Wanda Jackson and Rev. Horton Heat. Their debut album "Trouble" delivers 11 soul seared songs that speak directly of breakups, heartaches and moving on after surviving both.

Lead singer Shanda Cisneros' raw vocals seem to claw their way through your speakers as the band locks tight behind her with gritty saxophone riffs, a Motown inspired rhythm section and the occasional slide guitar.

Part of the reason the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion is so distasteful to the legions of blues purists is that Spencer cherishes not the mythology of the blues or the songcraft, but the groove, the actual sound of classic blues records. He couldn't care less about songwriting or technique; what's important is the feel and the grit of the performance, whether it's on-stage or on record. Often, that means that the Blues Explosion's records are better when they're playing than they are in memory, but there's no question that ever since Extra Width, the New York trio was exceptionally shrewd in crafting albums that pack real sonic force. They also were sharp enough to subtly explore new territory with each album, gradually moving from the Stonesy blooze of Extra Width through the funky Orange and gutbucket Now I Got Worry to Acme, where pure sound matters more than ever. Like the Stones, the Blues Explosion never abandon their signature sound, even when they're branching into new territory. No matter how many electronic bleeps, hip-hop loops, or cut-and-paste arrangements rear their heads on Acme, or how many producers or remixers are employed (including Calvin Johnson, Steve Albini, Suzanne Dyer, Alec Empire, Jim Dickinson, and the Automator), the primal, two-guitar racket remains at the center of the Blues Explosion's sound. But the electronica and hip-hop flourishes aren't folly, either -- they confirm Spencer's ultimate goal of sound over structure, force over sense. And while there are only a handful of songs to latch onto -- the slow, sexy "Magical Colors," the gonzoid rant "Talk About the Blues," the Jill Cunniff duet "Blue Green Olga" -- the dynamic explosions of sounds guarantee that Acme is a captivating listen, at least the first time through. Bill was raised in a musical family in rural Alberta, Canada. When he was 2 years old, he was known to sleep behind the piano at country dances. His parents played dance music in community halls in beautiful farming country. The love of nature and of music and of people gathering for celebration has been with him for his whole life.

Bill loves to collaborate with friends (musicians). His most recent collaboration is with his own band, The Free Radio Band, which includes his son Pat, Pa Joe, Moses Gregg and Miguel Ferrer. They have released a new recording in 2011 called Bluesland. In 2009 Bill recorded with Jasmine Ohlhauser and Wyckham Porteous in the band 'bop ensemble'. Previous to bop ensemble, Bill collaborated with Eivør Pálsdóttir from the Faroe Islands. He produced and performed on Eivør's third solo CD, 'eivør'. The recording won double at the Danish Music Awards Folk in 2006. Other collaborations: with Alan MacLeod, Shannon Johnson, Hans Staymer and Andreas Schuld, and Lester Quitzau & Madagascar Slim (Tri-Continental), as well as his solo projects, have all attained award status in Canada.

This is lively music to dance to, music to cuddle up with, music for all occasions. Fred Kaplan is a wonderful pianist/organist, and after spending a bunch of years playing piano for the Hollywood Fats Band (most of that time with Richard Innes on drums) Fred is releasing his "Hold My Mule", seventeen original songs all written by Kaplan and they are all instrumentals. These recordings were an accumulated effort, completed over a two year time period.

All the tracks were recorded live, with no over-dubbing. Nearly every song on this record has a remarkable moment such as in "Jumbalaya Jump" where Junior Watson just kills it on guitar. Each of the guys play beautifully for the whole CD, weaving in and out, front and back, with solid support from the rhythm section. Great musicianship throughout!

Urban Allstars was born from the fertile blues territory of the band Blues Down Town featuring Thomas Grahn playing harmonica (and singing too) and Claes Parmland on guitar. Ealey gets back to basics on the aptly titled Raw, after the disappointing R&B-oriented experiment that was Stuck Between Rhythm & Blues. Raw is a satisfying slab of unpretentious electric blues with some nice guitar work. Ealey's not a fantastic vocalist, but he is a good one, and his singing complements his playing nicely, especially on "Walkin' Blues." There are quite a few covers on this album, which Ealey performs with a kind of low-key energy that suits them perfectly: Bob Dylan's "Meet Me in the Morning," Willie Nelson's "Funny How Time Slips Away," and Ivory Joe Hunter's "Since I Met You Baby." "I've Got the Blues" proves that Ealey can write a traditional blues tune, and the folk-like "A Song for My Daughter" is a pleasant surprise. Highly recommended. ~Genevieve Williams

Australian blues artist John McNamara released his debut album in the summer of 2014. A track from that CD, “Burn, Burn, Burn,” won the Australian Blues Music Award for Song of the Year. And now he has a new album out, Rollin’ With It. It was released in Australia on March 1st, and is now getting a wide release. It features mostly original material, written by John McNamara, but also a few really good covers. I love the combination of soul and blues, and his voice has just the right sound, the right quality, to make it real and true. I saw a promotional video that he did, and was shocked by how young he looks. Must have an old soul, as they say, because that voice is coming from some deep experience. Though John McNamara is from Australia, this album was recorded at Ardent Studios in Memphis, Tennessee, and John is joined by some accomplished and familiar musicians, including Steve Potts on drums, Michael Toles on guitar, James “Jimi” Kinard on bass, Lester Snell on piano and organ (he also co-produced the CD), Marc Franklin on trumpet and flugelhorn, Lannie McMillan on tenor saxophone and Jim Spake on baritone saxophone. Backing vocals are provided by Iseula Hingano and Nicole Nehemia.

He kicks off the album with “One, Two Of A Kind,” a good song with something of a classic soul sound to his vocals, especially on certain lines like “Build it on up just to tear it on down,” while his lead guitar says blues all the way. The horns also help give the song that great Stax feel. “One, Two Of A Kind” is followed by “Bad Reputation,” a fun song with a catchy bass line. It’s a song about leaving his questionable past behind to focus on being a good man to his woman. “That’s all done, that’s all over/I’m all about loving you/Yes, I’m all about loving you.” Do you think by repeating that line he is more convincing? Or is it a case of protesting too much? Ah, let’s give him the benefit of the doubt.

The first time I listened to this album, the song that started getting me really interested was John McNamara’s cover of “Ask Me ‘Bout Nothing (But The Blues”), here titled “Ask Me Nothing (But About The Blues).” It was written by Don Robey and Henry Boozier, and originally recorded by Bobby Bland. John McNamara delivers an excellent rendition, with the perfect amount of ache in his voice. “Ask me why does a tree have to shed its leaves/I don’t know, oh I don’t know/But ask me how does a man feel when he’s got the blues/I’d say, misused, abused, oh, downhearted and blue/The reason that I know this/Is ‘cause the blues is all I was left with.” Everything comes together here to create a powerful and moving version of this song. And it’s followed by another seriously good track, “Wild Out There,” written by John McNamara. I love songs like this that have something of a classic R&B quality, both in the music and the vocal delivery. I love Sam Cooke and Otis Redding, and this song could keep company with the work of those artists. Something about this kind of music always works for me. “And the city ain’t been kind/And I’ve seen a thing or two/I’ve been down so long/Could really use some time with you.” Yes. And yes, it is certainly wild out there. I love John McNamara’s vocal performance here, and of course the horns are excellent. This is one of my favorites.

“Under The Weight Of The Moon” has such a cool vibe right from the start, with those finger snaps and that delicious organ, with that blues guitar adding comments, all before the vocals even come in. “I’m just gonna lie here, baby/You know it feels so good, feels so good.” Yes, it does. And the following lines give the CD its title, “Gonna roll with it, roll with it/I’m gonna roll with it.” This is another of my favorites. It’s followed by another tune with a good groove, “One Impossible Night.”

As I mentioned, songs from this album would feel at home in the company of the work of Sam Cooke and Otis Redding. Well, John McNamara actually covers an Otis Redding tune, “Security,” delivering a good rendition. How can you help but dig that groove, those horns, those excellent vocals? John McNamara follows that with another cover, and actually another song done by Bobby Bland, “Blind Man,” written by Don Robey and Joe Scott. He also ends the CD with a cover, this time a song written by Lloyd Pemberton and Teddy Conyers, “Suffering With The Blues.” This one has been recorded by several artists over the years, including Joe Medlin, Little Willie John, Nancy Wilson, James Brown and Lou Rawls. On this CD’s version, John McNamara gives us a heartfelt, passionate vocal performance. Listen to that heartache. “Why does your love taunt me/And haunt me through the night/’Cause I know you don’t want me/If you did, you’d be right here by my side.” Come on, lady, go see the guy already! ~Michael Doherty

Jeff Stone and I grew up on the southeast side of Chicago. He and I became fast friends in the third grade. I’m guessing that would have made us 7 or 8 years old. Time and circumstances kept Jeff and me on separate musical paths but our friendship knew no such bounds. We talked about making a record together forever. "The Southside Lives” is the record I had to make with Jeff Stone – the record that I knew Jeff would dig deep into because he would know where every word I sang came from. I've been performing since 1964 and I've always been a rock and roller. I was a lead singer/frontman my own band Barry's Truckers for 36 years.

I'm going to try keep this short. I'm a mid-western boy and I was born and raised in Kenosha WI. I first started playing when I went away to college. I got into a band as a drummer/singer and we called ourselves the Benders. We played bars and college parties. In 1966 we traveled to a little recording studio in Wausau WI were we recorded two of our original compositions. The songs were Can't Tame Me and Got Me Down. We made 45 with a picture sleeve and distributed most of them around our college campus. We thought was the end of the story for our little 45 but it wasn't. Years and I mean years later, our 45 became favorite of record collectors around the world. Copies have sold for as much as $2000 dollars on eBay. Go figure.

After graduation from college the band split up and I moved to a suburb of Milwaukee WI and took a job as a Industrial Education teacher. I thought my performing days were over. However, when I went to sell some of my equipment I ended up hooking up with some guys who wanted to try and form a band. We did and we called ourselves Barry's Truckers (to long of story to go in to.) We were a cover band playing oldies. We started out as a simple 5 piece band but over the years it expanded into a full blown 7 piece show band. I sang and was the front man for the group. I was fortunate to have worked with some real great musicians over the years. During that time we became very popular in Wisconsin and Northern Ill. We played nightclubs, many outdoor festivals, made television appearances and won the Wisconsin Area Music Award for the best nostalgia band. We also became the major go to band as an opening act for national oldies acts that came through our area. We opened for The Beach Boys, The Everly Brothers, Ricky Nelson, Paul Revere and the Raiders, the Grass Roots, and the list goes on and on. So I was a weekend warrior. Teacher during the week and rock and roller on the weekend.

During this time Barry's Truckers was fun and paid well but I always had this drive to do something different. So over the years I've also been involved in and have recorded with several side projects. The names are Paul Barry and the Remnants, The Convertibles, The DuoTones and Paul Barry and the Del Reys. And not to forget, that after not seeing each other for 40 years the Benders reunited 2 summers ago to record a new version of Can't Tame Me and write two other new songs and release a new 5 song CD. With the side projects we did some of my originals and some obscure covers. We didn't make much money but we sure had a great time.

In 2007 after 36 years with Barry's Truckers I ended the band and moved to Florida. Couldn't take those Wisconsin winters anymore. I still perform locally in a duo doing the oldies and I'm continually working in my home studio on my original material.

For my latest project I reunited with the original guitarist from Paul Barry and the Del Reys, Ryan Rosseo, and we recorded a brand new rock and roll CD in Nashville.

You only have to hear the soulful baritone voice of Bruce Mississippi Johnson to be able to take an educated guess at his musical heritage.

Born in Mississippi, in America’s deep south, submerged in the music of his Grandfather's church from a young age, Bruce was brought up on a musical diet of Al Green, Jackie Wilson (his Cousin), Lou Rawls and Gil Scott-Heron, and that is pretty much the history you would expect when you hear his matchless voice. A 6ft4 ex-US Marine, Bruce is an imposing figure but it’s his incredibly textured voice that really stays with you.

After leaving the military, Bruce immersed himself in the renowned Parisian jazz scene. Having built his reputation in Paris, he was asked to provide the vocals for legendary blues bassist Big Joe Turner’s Blues Caravan.

It was while playing around the world in Turner’s band that Bruce started to collaborate with the keyboard player, Johan Dalgaard, on the songs that would eventually become Bruce’s first album “The Deal Baby”.

Now settled in London, Bruce Mississippi Johnson has released his album “The Deal Baby”. The beautifully soulful journey through the emotions of self-doubt the track contains a heartfelt spoken soliloquy which perfectly adds depth to the story of the lyrics. This is an impressive taster for what’s to come on the album.

Buddy Guy revitalized his career when he signed with Silvertone Records in the early '90s. His first album for the label, Damn Right, I've Got the Blues, was a smash success, earning critical acclaim, awards, and sales hand over fist. Prior to that record, he was a legend only among blues fans; afterward, he was a star. Although it was a bit too rock-oriented and slick for purists, Damn Right was a terrific album, setting the pace not only for Guy but for modern electric blues in the '90s. As the decade wore on, Guy continued to make albums for Silvertone, some of them a little complacent, others quite excellent.

Buddy's Baddest: The Best of Buddy Guy attempts to summarize those years in 14 songs, including three previously unreleased cuts. Not surprisingly, the compilers favor the Guy of Damn Right, featuring four songs from the record and three from its soundalike sequel, Feels Like Rain. Only two tracks from Slippin' In, his hardest blues record for the label, made the cut, while the fine live album Live! The Real Deal and the misguided Heavy Love are represented by a track apiece.

In other words, a lot of good stuff remains on the original albums, which is doubly unfortunate since the three unreleased cuts are all throwaways. By relying so heavily on two records, Buddy's Baddest doesn't wind up being an accurate portrait of Guy's Silvertone recordings. That doesn't mean it's a bad listen, since the first ten songs are all very good and quite entertaining. However, anyone who has Damn Right but wants to dig deeper into Guy's Silvertone albums may prefer to pick up Feels Like Rain, which offers more of the same crossover Chicago blues, or Slippin' In, which is the real deal. /Stephen Thomas Erlewine, AllMusic

On retrouve une version de Black Girl, connue aussi sous les appellations In the Pines et Where Did You Sleep Last Night?, qu’il chante en duo avec Angel Forrest, et que l’on retrouve sur l’album Unplugged in New York de Nirvana.
