With Get Your Back Into It!, Chicago native, guitarist and vocalist Nick Moss and New Jersey native, harmonica player and vocalist Dennis Gruenling – together with Rodrigo Mantovani on bass, Taylor Streiff on keyboards and Pierce Downer on drums – deliver a deeply rooted, timeless blue collar blues album. According to Moss, “We are a rare breed as far as how authentic we like to keep the music." That's not a surprise to longtime fans, as Moss proudly represents the city of Chicago as one of the few bluesmen working today to have learned his craft firsthand directly from many of the genre’s original creators.

Get Your Back Into It! was produced by Moss and Mantovani and contains fourteen original songs -- twelve by Moss and two by Gruenling. Guests include saxophonist “Sax” Gordon Beadle and organist “Brother” John Kattke. The album is inspired by the electrifying blues sounds of the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s, and is performed with taste, restraint, sly humor and pure joy. In addition to the expertly crafted lyrics, the album features three wild instrumentals that simply dare you to stay seated. “We're not reinventing the wheel," says Moss of the songs and performances on the new album, "but we like to push ourselves out of our comfort zone, and I feel like we accomplished that.”

Moss first made a name for himself playing bass for bluesman Jimmy “Fast Fingers” Dawkins. Dawkins encouraged Nick to unleash his fire and passion. From there, Moss was chosen by Willie “Big Eyes” Smith to join his Legendary Blues Band, but Smith insisted Moss switch to guitar. Blues icon Jimmy Rogers (whose best known songs included "Walking By Myself" and "Ludella") hired Moss as his touring guitarist, mentoring him on the blues lifestyle along the way. Today, Moss’ blistering fretwork, impassioned, soul-charged vocals and memorable original songs place him in a league of his own.

Dennis Gruenling, Moss’ friend of over 20 years, is considered among today’s most innovative and creative blues harmonica players. His high-energy, full-throttle reed work has earned him comparisons to many of the greats, including the late James Cotton. A self-taught player and a natural entertainer with seven solo albums and numerous guest appearances to his credit, Gruenling’s giant, fat-toned harp work, raw-boned singing and untamed energy are a perfect foil for Moss’ inspired guitar playing and straight-from-the-shoulder blues vocals. Vintage Guitar says, “Gruenling’s harp, along with the Midwestern intensity of Moss’ blues guitar, is pure ecstasy.”

Lucky Guy! finished in the Top 10 on the Living Blues Radio Chart’s Top 50 Albums of 2019. Internationally, the album peaked on blues charts at #1 in Australia, #3 in France and #7 in the UK. Songs from Lucky Guy! were also prominently featured on BBC2 in Britain and CBC in Canada. The title track became one of the most played songs on SiriusXM’s Bluesville.

The Nick Moss Band Featuring Dennis Gruenling makes their Alligator Records debut with 'The High Cost of Low Living'. April 28th, 2013, Liz Mandeville was honored for her life long commitment to the blues with induction into the Chicago Blues Hall of Fame! Liz, who started her career in 1983 with a string of gigs at the notorious “Deadwood Dave’s Saloon” on the city’s north side, won the Windy City Blues Society’s 2011 Blues Challenge. Liz’s highly engaging shows often end in standing ovations; at the 2011 Lansing Blues Fest they were dancing in the street. They were on their feet in South Carolina, in Florida, and at WCBS’s show at Buddy Guy’s Legends in Chicago.

Clarksdale, her first release for the new Blue Kitty Music label, an idea fostered by Grammy winner Willie “Big Eyes” Smith, dropped in May of 2012. Smith, best known for his work with the late Muddy Waters, contributed five tracks to the new disc. Clarksdale also features a riotous performance by long time friend and Howlin’ Wolf alum, the Legendary Eddie Shaw and includes tracks with Nick Moss and Donna Herula who was Liz’s partner in the IBC challenge.

Liz Mandeville’s Red Top builds up a contemporary blues sound based on the stylistic bricks from its past.

Liz Mandeville draws her inspiration from more traditional sources, not just the electric blues from the 1950s on, but also from the swing and jazz of the 1940s, and, on “Rub My Belly,” from the blues rags of the 1920s, and on “Home Cookin’,” from the double-entendre acoustic folk blues of Mississippi John Hurt. (His classic “Candy Man” comes readily to mind.) Red Top is a CD of artist-penned music, 15 tracks of Mandeville originals that comprise contemporary electric blues, jazz swing, a rocked-up 1920s Bessie Smith-style rag, a straightforward acoustic folk blues, and on the last cut, “Little Queen,” a musically eclectic number that’s a mixture of country-rock with Chuck Berry influence.

Mandeville is not only an accomplished songwriter. She’s also an excellent guitarist and compelling vocalist with a style that’s her own, another showing of the diversity within contemporary blues on the distaff side. ~George Fish

Nick Moss Band's highly-anticipated new CD, Time Ain’t Free was described by Guitar World as “nothing less than a powerful gumbo of Chicago soul, funk, blues, jam band, and rock ’n roll,” as they premiered the gritty track “No Reason”. Time Ain’t Free marks the tenth album by bandleader, songwriter, and groove master Nick Moss, reaching a new musical high water mark.

A decendant of the legendary Lead Belly, Michael Ledbetter makes his Nick Moss Band lead vocal recording debut on this album, marking the arrival of a fiery new vocal and guitar talent.

Billboard.com debuted the soul-drenched ballad “I Want the World to Know”, with Ledbetter’s powerful vocals front and center. Of Moss’ contribution to the track, Billboard’s Lars Brandle writes, “Moss’ class shines through in ‘I Want the World To Know,’ which builds into a showcase of his fluency on the six-string.”

Other praise has come to the band after a recent 36-date national winter tour. KEXP’s Greg Vandy called the band “great” late last year. UT San Diego praised Moss’ “high-octane” sound, continuing, “Their forthcoming new album, Time Ain’t Free, finds the group continuing to expand stylistically, by incorporating gospel, boogie, Southern-rock and more.”

Nick Moss' blues education started early, with the help of his parents' record collection and his sneaking into blues clubs while still in high school.

At eighteen, he played bass alongside his brother Joe as a ribtip in Buddy Scott's band.

At twenty, he was touring the country with Jimmy "Fast Fingers" Dawkins.

At twenty one, Nick replaced Calvin "Fuzz" Jones of the Legendary Blues Band; the longtime bassist of Muddy Waters.

LBB's drummer, Willie "Big Eyes" Smith recommended Nick to the legendary Jimmy Rogers who was heading back to the U.S. early for a tour of his own.

Nick filled and held the coveted guitar spot in the Jimmy Rogers Band for nearly 3 years until the urge to set out on his own began.

Anyone who thinks youngsters don't make blues albums like in the old days needs to be introduced to Nick Moss. His impressive credentials include journeyman work behind windy city mainstays Jimmy Dawkins and Jimmy Rogers, and although he hasn't logged as many miles as either, his sophomore release shows him to be a tough, roots-heavy traditionalist. Planted firmly in the Chicago tradition, Moss plays guitar with authority, tearing into trebly, terse, staccato lines like the old pros he learned from. Only four of these 14 tracks are covers, but even though his self-composed songs don't break new territory -- and some like "Work Your Hips" outwardly cop familiar riffs -- this is blues music of uncommon intensity. Moss occasionally shifts gears into R&B on tunes like "For You." It's just enough to alter, but not water down, the straight-up Chicago vibe that dominates this disc. His playing on Freddie King's "The Boogie Man" slices like the strings are made of razor blades. Occasional sax, credited to the Dez Desormeaux Orchestra, adds a further rough and tumble feel to the palate, as does the ominous Hammond B3 from John Kattke. Vocally, Moss is merely adequate, but he gets by on sheer force of will. A concise, rugged version of Muddy Waters' "My Love Strikes Like Lightening" sounds like it was recorded at the same time as the original, a high compliment indeed. Moss delves into back alley blues on "Two Fools With a Misunderstanding," another original that seems as if it came from the Muddy songbook. A cover of Donny Hathaway's "The Ghetto" is as contemporary as this album gets, but even on this funky instrumental, Moss retains his uncluttered approach. Dedicated and hardcore without being slavishly imitative, Nick Moss' new plan looks a lot like his old one;keep the raw Chicago blues alive. ~Review by Hal Horowitz

Bassist Nick Moss learned his instrument at a young age, often watching his brother Joe play with Buddy Scott, among others. By the time he graduated from high school, Scott was on the lookout for a new bassist and Moss scored the job. Two years later, Jimmy Dawkins stole him away and added him to his tour lineup. In 1993, the Legendary Blues Band asked him to join and Moss got his first spot on a blues recording with their Money Talks record. Moss eventually moved up to play the guitar in the group, a role bestowed upon him by bandleader/resident blues expert Willie Smith. Moss spent more than two years with the band before joining Jimmy Rogers' band as a guitarist for a three-year stint. Moss eventually grew tired of performing for other musicians, and wanted to explore his own ideas and songs.

Note: The first time Nick Moss & the Flip Tops cut a live set at Chan's blues club in Rhode Island, the resulting album was nominated for two Blues Music Awards - Album of the Year and Traditional Blues Album of the Year, not to mention nominations for Band of the Year and Best Instrumentalist: Guitar for Moss. The band returned to Chan's in the summer of 2008 to wax another live gig, this time joined by legendary Chicago bluesman Lurrie Bell and Kate Moss on bass. The live recordings that add to a band's rep are few and far between, but Moss and his gang have never played a note that doesn't brim over with passion, making Live at Chan's, Combo Platter No. 2 a worthy companion to the fireworks of the original Live at Chan's. The opener, "Spare Ribs and Chopsticks" lets the basic Flip Top quartet loosen up with extended solos from Moss and Piano Willie O'Shawny on piano. Moss is pure Chicago in his tone and style, but there's a hint of country blues (and C&W twang) in his solos, while O'Shawny simply burns up the keys with his right hand throwing off plenty of honky tonk sparks. "Try to Treat You Right," a Moss original from First Offense, is a launching pad for another extended Moss solo full of bent and slurred notes and Gerry Hundt's soulful harmonica, with Kate Moss adding a slinky bassline to the slow smoky tune. Hundt's "Whiskey Makes Me Mean," a boogie-woogie tune from his debut Since Way Back, gives Hundt a chance to show off his expertise on the blues mandolin. He drops a bit of "Choo Choo Ca-Boogie" into his extended solo while Moss blows harp and O'Shawny delivers his usual expert keyboard work. "Lonesome Bedroom Blues," by pianist Curtis Jones gets a down and dirty treatment with Moss singing vocal lines that twist and turn like his guitar solos before standing aside to let O'Shawny deliver a solo full of ripping high notes that send chills down your spine. Lurrie Bell joins the band for the last four tunes on the album. Bell sings lead on "Don't You Lie to Me," the Hudson Whittaker tune made famous by Tampa Red, then trades solos with Moss with able support from O'Shawny's piano. Eddie Boyd's "Five Long Years" is a showcase for the dueling solos of Moss and Bell. Bell gives Willie Dixon's "I'm Ready" a playful feel with a winking vocal and stinging guitar work that makes a nice contrast to Moss' more fluid lead lines. The ensemble takes it home with "I Wanna Know," a rockin' Moss original that features O'Shawny's dynamic right hand, barrelhouse backing vocals from the band, and Moss and Bell setting off more fretboard fireworks.

Notes: Fans of Chicago Blues torchbearer Nick Moss will be thrilled with this long-awaited and eagerly-anticipated live release. The 76-minute set showcases Moss’ strengths as bandleader, musician, and songwriter, as he and his “top-shelf Flip Top combo” burn through their celebrated originals as well as some choice, time-tested (but not overdone) covers.
