Continuing its association with blues and rhythm and blues music from the regions of Tennessee and Arkansas is the fine album series ‘Southern Bred R&B Rockers’. Issued by Koko Mojo, Southern Bred R&B Rockers reaches album #24 and includes more records where a fuller sound was beginning to emerge due to the recording studios used, and many of the artists involved beginning to make a serious name for themselves due to a blues revival occurring in the 60s. As with previous volumes of this series, and more in line with the regions of Tennessee and Arkansas in focus, a few of the musicians featured make further contributions such as Cecil Gant (‘Hit That Jive Jack’), Larry Birdsong (‘Do You Love Me’), and Memphis Slim, and this time with His Orchestra, and song ‘No Mail Blues’. Starting your listening experience of album #24 with ‘No Mail Blues’ by Memphis Slim and His Orchestra is as good as any place to begin given the “fuller” sound coming together and creating a very classy slice of rhythm and blues. In comparison, Washboard Sam and ‘Diggin’ My Potatoes’ is an altogether different record yet one performed with the same amount of expertise, but this is a song with one foot in the past and the other welcoming the present where simplicity combines with higher production values of the recording studio. From two such quality records, the rest of the album continues in the same way but with added variety and heard from excellent Willie Cobbs’ ‘You Don’t Love Me’, and possessing a very noticeable groove mainly carved out by its guitar and supplemented by saxophone and relaxed tones of Cobbs’ vocal. There are some surprises to be had and comes by way of phenomenal track ‘All Shook Out’ offered by Moohah, which is classic rhythm and blues territory and sounding even older than its original release date of 1954 with its reminders of packed dancehalls, black and white films, etc. Similarly, Crown Prince Waterford repeats this formula with ‘Leaping Boogie’, but it is the frayed edges of its production and the strong vocals that add something different and attract the most. Just when you think you have heard all the records from Tennessee and Arkansas with a blues and rhythm and blues flavour, another album from the Koko Mojo stable materialises with yet more compelling records to keep this series going. Long may that continue!

The concept of Southern Bred Tennessee and Arkansas allows the sourcing of a variety of wide-ranging black music chosen by the theme of birth to be collected onto the albums. The series like its predecessors are made by people who are active on the music scene, for people who enjoy the excellence of sound and quality of music. The series concept is to research an artist's birth state and compile albums around their Southern Bred heritage. By doing so the musical concept radically differs from that of a regional or label-based compilation and therefore opens the variety of sound within the album and series. Rough Lover, Southern Bred Tennessee and Arkansas Koko Mojo (KM-CD-89) is the third look at the birth heritage of Tennessee and Arkansas which is consolidated into the anthology due to it being referred to as West Memphis. The performers on the third episode have a fresh and often different musical approaches and variety is the spice of life. From the Blues arena are, the Gunter brothers Al and Arthur, and Joe Hill Louis. Rhythm & Blues artists of excellence include; Big John Greer, Ted Jarrett, a man at the dawn of his career Jimmy McCracklin, and hard drinker Cecil Gant. The changing direction of the sound is from; the over-looked Bobby Hebb, the future Lady of Soul Music Aretha Franklin, and two soloists who teamed up for a 45 rpm Charlie & Rosie. More tracks freshly picked at Koko Mojo to feature on the latest album in the Southern Bred R&B Rockers series and that being Volume 22. The latest addition in the series continues its focus on the artists who either featured strongly or only fleetingly in the regions of Arkansas and Tennessee. As with previous albums, this series has broken the grading scale when it comes to consistency and quality because quite simply, there hasn’t been a dud issued so far, and judging by initial impressions, the current CD continues this trend. From the variety of performers selected, the listener will experience a range of blues variations from Jump Gospel, Blues Rockers, Rhythm and Blues guitar rockers and plenty of tracks considered more straightforward Rock ‘n’ Roll. With its by now standard three-fold design complete with sleeve notes adding to the story given by the music supplied here, ‘Southern Bred R&B Rockers Vol. 22’ starts with some classy rhythm and blues complete with orchestra via Tiny Davis and Her Orch. and song ‘Race Horse’. Continuing in similar style is Memphis Slim and His Orch. ‘The Girl I Love’, and further musical sophistication from Louis Jordan and His Tympany Five ‘That Chick’s Too Young To Fry’. The introduction of Big Maybelle and ‘Whole Lotta Shakin’” is where the pattern of music changes, albeit slightly, given the voluminous nature of the recording. You can hear the early foundations of rock ‘n’ roll emerging in Washboard Sam and His Washboard Band’s ‘Evil Blues’ and, similarly, with Earl Forest and The Beale Streeters’ ‘Pretty Bessie’. A different track of sorts is thrown into the mix and comes from the SUN stable and applies to compiler Mark Armstrong’s words regarding “cross-over recordings which for many people means Rock ‘n’ Roll music” as this track attests to. Such a label also applies to Gene Allison and the rhythm and blues meets rock ‘n’ roll of ‘Somebody, Somewhere’ and this continues, but also leans back to where this album started by not forgetting the big band orchestra once the likes of Jimmy Witherspoon’s ‘Drinking Beer’ comes into view. Further crossover appeal can also be heard during Roscoe Gordon’s ‘What I Wouldn’t’, which closes the album. Koko Mojo cracks it again with another “classic” album to add to the previous twenty-one editions of this genuinely great series known as Southern Bred R&B Rockers.

Turning its attention to the States of Tennessee & Arkansas is the album series ‘Southern Bred R&B Rockers’. A new volume and number therefore, the lastest album in this mighty fine series gets off to a flyer with the powerhouse vocals of Little Willie John and ‘Do You Love Me’. Next track worthy of consideration is Gene Allison with ‘If Things Don’t Change’, which is less “in your face” and more restrained than Little Willie John, but is equally full of energy and contains vocals that show their range and still presented in a very similar manner to the aforementioned ‘Do You Love Me’. From rhythm and blues to a straight blues affair is Chicago Sunny Boy and ‘On The Floor’, which is an instrumental and full of piping-hot harmonica and it’s rockin’! Cecil Gant’s ‘Nashville Jumps’ is a sophisticated slice of rhythm and blues and boogie-woogie piano and complete with detailed lyrics drawing one’s attention to the speaker. In other words, fabulous! Something of rock ‘n’ roll spliced with blues shows up during Frank Frost with The Nighthawks and track ‘Now Twist’. There is more rhythm and blues greatness via Billy ‘Red’ Love and His Orchestra with ‘Drop Top’ on the Chess label and reveals itself to be an early precursor to rock ‘n’ roll. With the turn of the Willies to close this first chapter in the Tennessee & Arkansas range of albums with Little Willie John popping by once again and this time with ‘Until You Do’, before the clever combination of blues and very early rock ‘n’ roll influence of Big Willie and ‘Bogey Man’. It just keeps on getting better, the album series that is Southern Bred R&B Rockers that is.

Unquestionably the aural feeling of this album is varied, full of hot recordings and offers an eclectic assortment of recordings. Most importantly due to the time frame of the recordings the sound and style for some artist may have changed, no matter what the songs are “A” grade performances. As always, the sequence of artists and styles sit comfortably side by side and this album focuses on Rhythm & Blues, Rock ‘n’ Roll and up-tempo Blues music.

With volume 20 we dive for the eighth and very last time into the rich musical tradition of Louisiana and New Orleans. As the title of this volume 'Mardi Gras In New Orleans' indicates, composer Mark Armstrong focuses on the music that provides Mardi Gras with the necessary atmosphere.
Mardi Gras or 'Fat Teddy', is the day before Ash Wednesday, better known as Carnival, which is exuberantly celebrated in New Orleans. Parades with colorfully dressed participants are accompanied by energetically playing bands. Mardi Gras also has its typical colors, namely purple, green and gold. During the parades, all kinds of gadgets are thrown out, especially the necklaces or beads are very popular. Whoever wears the most around his neck, therefore, enjoys a lot of attention. As said before, music is of the utmost importance. The 28 tracks, from well-known artists, regional performers and two New Orleans bred Italian artists, provide a captivating glimpse into the amusing and danceable music that brightens up Mardi Gras.
We can certainly conclude that both this album, as well as the seven previous ones that placed the spots in Louisiana and New Orleans, introduced us to formidable recordings that artists from those regions released in the past. That is precisely the advantage of compilations like this, that you only get the most beautiful rhythm & blues presented on a tray. The next volumes in the Southern Bred series will take us through the music of Tennessee and Arkansas.

Also on volume 19 in the 'Southern Bred' series, we remain in Louisiana and New Orleans and we refresh ourselves again with the traditional music from the half of the last century, which is rich in the region. This rich tradition is once again translated into a beautiful mix of blues, rhythm & blues and rock 'n' roll, in short danceable party songs. It is the seventh and penultimate album that places the region in the spotlights. The eighth and final album about the region will focus on the Mardi Gras in New Orleans. Striker Stripper is an instant New Orleans class act. None other than Fats Domino is present with 'Ain't That Just Like A Woman', a typical New Orleans rhythm and blues from 1961. Even more piano, but already rocking James 'Sugarboy' Crawford in 'I Don't Need you'. Although the song dates back to 1957, it still sounds completely contemporary. And so does Jay Nelson's 'Don't You Wanna Man Like Me'. Jay recorded it in 1960 for the Excello label. The song actually had everything to become a hit, but the lack of airplay prevented that. The one who listened to the success-scoring artists of his time was Chuck Martin. His 'Emma Lee' is therefore full of clichés. Better and moreover a typical New Orleans rhythm & blues is Cookie's 'That's What You Do To Me', including the obligatory piano playing, embellished with a nice ripping sax. Saxophonist Herb Hardesty is known for his collaboration with Fats. He can be heard on Domino's classics like 'Blueberry Hill', 'Ain't That A Shame' and 'Blue Monday' to name a few. Here he takes the vocal lead in the bluesy 'Why Did We Have To Part', which he recorded together with guitarist Walter 'Papoose' Nelson. The latter was also occasionally hired as a session musician for Fats. "Why Did We Have To Part" was Hardesty's only vocal recording. Eddie Bo is well known, but chances are you haven't heard 'Hey Bo' yet. After all, it is one of his early recordings and completely different from his later work. It is a mainly, with the exception of the cry 'Hey Bo', instrumental, somewhat exotic-looking beautiful song. This is followed by 'You Better Believe It' a cool jump blues by Paul Gayten. For an authentic New Orleans rhythm you can go to Eddy Lang and 'I'm Beggin' With Tears' afterwards. That he pushed her hard with the nose to the facts that he left her, will be continued in the uptempo 'Cryin' Emma' by Rolling Crew. Together with The Upsetters, Lester Robertson canned the rockers 'Oh Babe' and 'My Girl Across Town'. You will find both songs on this compilation. With his Excello recordings, swamp blues artist Lonesome Sundown enjoyed the greatest successes. You can hear a sample of his skills on the swinging 'Learn To Treat Me Better', released in 1960. The black and white keys are played by Tal Miller. The same Miller closes the album with "B-A-B-Y", a rock song recorded for Hollywood Records in 1958.
Despite the fact that seven compilations have already been devoted to the rhythm & blues and rock 'n' roll from Louisiana and New Orleans, none of these albums contain inferior tracks. We are therefore already looking forward to volume 20, which is scheduled for September 17.

Keeping the "gumbo" hot are, Rudy Green, Champion Jack Dupree, Roy ''Baldhead'' Byrd, old-time Blues artist Jessie Thomas who updates his style and Little Eddie has changed identity and became the frantic rocker persona of Eddie Lang. There are two solo recordings from the talented Richard Berry, one of which is as wild as anything by Little Richard and one recording with The Lockettes, all being from different years of his career, and the versatile Tommy Ridgley returns this time with a Rock ‘n’ Roll recording. Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown provides an instrumental which Revival band The Blue Cats covered on their self-titled album in 1980. The riot of rhythm goes on to showcase R&B veterans; Rudy Green, Blind Billy Tate, Ray Johnson, Calvin Spears, Fat Man Matthews and The Four Kitten, Jay Nelson and His Jumpers. Both The Gondoliers and The Hawks contain important local musicians in their line-ups and the sleeve notes tell the story. Two R&B songstresses grace the album, Mickey Champion who has Jazz influences and Irma Thomas who became internationally famous from 1960 onwards with her changing approach to R&B. The sound on I Hate To See You Go is enriched by the inclusion of Rockin’ Blues which brings a punch to the sound, through the inclusion of Drifting Charles, Lonesome Sundown, Little Walter and His Jukes, Guitar Grable and The Musical Kings and the man who participated on so many Excello sessions Lazy Lester. Hitmakers of varying success are, Edgar Blanchard, Ernest Kador, and Huey "Piano" Smith. With "Pass The Gin", already the eleventh volume in the "Southern Bred" series, we continue our search for Texan R&B Rockers. And there are a lot of famous and lesser known artists and their songs to discover. We are immediately treated to a heavy R & B rock song by H.B. Barnum with "Don't Cha Know". Barnum was part of The Dootones in the late 1950's. He recorded "Don't Cha Know" in 1959. We get a fine example of rock and roll from Cledus Harrison and Orchestra with "Rock And Roll In The Groove", pure Little Ricard style. Blues and harmonica man Harmonica Slim can be heard twice. You can hear his phenomenal harmonica performance for the first time on "Drop Anchor". Later he comes up again with "You Better Believe It". Another blues and rhythm & blues celebrity is Charles Brown. Here he is present with the swinging "It's A Sin To Tell A Lie". A super talented saxophonist was certainly Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson. His 'Good Bread Alley' puts that talent in the foreground, although he can also be enjoyed vocally. Also twice present is Joe "Papoose" Fritz, namely with "Real Fine Girl", recorded in 1951 and the in 1954 canned swinging "Honey, Honey" with Johnny Otis in the band. A popcorn rocker, Young Jessie recorded "Teacher Gimme Back" in 1961 for the Mercury label. James Wayne was certainly not a good guest. After an altercation with a motel manager, he returned with a bottle of gasoline, which he promptly emptied. He sounds a lot more distinguished in "Agreeable Woman" and "Two Faced Man". A splendid instrumental boogie comes from saxophonist and clarinetist Little Willie Jackson with "Jackson's Boogie" recorded for Modern in 1948, which also includes a great guitar and piano solo. Good is also the title track of The Meadowlarks, which shows a sublime soft jazz guitar solo in the middle part. One track that is certainly among the most impressive is Barbara Lynn's soulful version of "Don't Be Cruel". Great job! We close with a classic undertone. The instrumental "Nut Rocker" of Jack B Nimble and The Quicks is based on Tchaikovsky's "Nutcracker Suite". The song is also known in the version of B. Bumble and The Stingers. Beyond all this beauty, volume 11 of the gorgeous "Southern Bred" series hides a host of other gems. Like all previous volumes, number 11 is an absolute must. ~Lambert Smits

The concept of these albums allows a variety of wide-ranging black music chosen by the theme of birth to be collected onto the albums. This makes the aural sound of the series different from that of a label-based collection. The mixed variety of artists include hitmakers, Bobby Day, Ray Sharpe and Marie Adams from the Johnny Otis Show. Piano rockers are heard from; Roy Hawkins, Floyd Dixon, Ivory Joe Hunter, Charles Brown and Amos Milburn and chanteuse Camille Howard all of whom offer different techniques of keyboard playing. The Downhome Blues comes from traditional roots performers; Harmonica Slim and Lightnin' Hopkins. The guitar Blues artists include Pee Wee Crayton, Barbara Lynn, and Freddy King and with horns to drive the song along Cal Valentine and The Texas Rockers have a catchy hook in their instrumental tune. The album climaxes with the wild and raucous Blues rocker from Young Jessie. Together all the artists featured perform a variety of music and many styles of Roots music are featured on I'm Tore Down. As with every album, there is more music to hear and enjoy and the vibrant music has a pleasing up-tempo feel throughout. A Jubilation of Scorching Southern Bred Rockers, Koko Mojo (KMCD086) is compiled to promote the now twenty CD album series Southern Bred, which has so far visited three States; Mississippi, Texas and Louisiana and New Orleans.

It is no grand narrative to say, “A Jubilation of Scorching Southern Bred Rockers is full of vibrant, exciting, and “A” grade titles that are highly danceable.” The promotionally CD album is an introduction to the series and a wonderful opportunity for you to acquaint yourself with Southern Bred R&B Rockers.

It all began with an idea to make available the Rural Rustic Blues recordings of Willie Love and some of his fellow Trumpet artists, and the demand was unprecedented, and from the music-buying public’s interest, the series was continued. The Southern States sofar visited are; Mississippi (KMCD034 – 038), Texas (KMCD039 – 049 and 062), and Louisiana and New Orleans (KMCD063 – 070).

The titles on this promotional disc are selected from the twenty albums and 560 songs used throughout the series. As every song is of quality through our “killer no filler” philosophy this coordinator had great difficulty selecting thirty highlights for your listening pleasure, and through endeavor accomplished the task. I have chosen thirty of my favorite songs from the series for the promotional disc, one of which is my all-time pick from the twenty albums.

Every Southern Bred album has; stunning design, is adorned with photographs, the sleeve-notes are engaging and include short biographical information, interesting facts, and anecdotes about the artist. Within the promotional album sleeve, there is a "standalone" twelve-page booklet that doubles up as a catalog introducing each release with a front cover, full track-listing, and purchasing information.

Rockin' Chair Boogie' Southern Bred Texas R&B Rockers (KMCD039) the journey into artists birth of places continues with this second Koko Mojo series of albums. Here we have the first exploration into the Lone Star State of Texas which serves up a hot bed of Rhythm 'N' Blues musical talent from artists born within this State. The concept of these albums allows to source a variety of wide-ranging choice of music chosen by the theme of birth, which makes the aural sound of the album different to that of a label-based collection. The music mix as always is eclectic and dynamic. Some of the artists featured include; the raw and raucous Little Esther, rocking doo-wop from Vernon Green and The Medallions, Joe Houston during his formative Freedom recordings, the mainly unknown Marcellus Thomas and Eddie Tex Curtis. The legendary Saxophone specialist Jesse Powell leads the band with sexual innuendos from Fluffy Hunter barely hidden. Rural bluesman Lightnin' Hopkins is rhythmic and authentic and from the formative years of Rhythm 'N' Blues, Peppermint Harris and Wild Bill Moore are developing the style. Party man Amos Milburn is the next stage of the music and his piano proficiency is unquestionable. He is featured twice, firstly with an up-tempo instrumental and closes the album with a thundering vocal rocker. This Koko Mojo album is compiled by well-known Dee Jay and face on the music scene Mark Armstrong, who has been Dee Jaying since his early teen years. Our albums have; stunning design, sleeve notes, 28 songs, mastered for the best possible sound available. The disc is housed in an attractively designed cardboard sleeve, specially constructed to avoid the use of plastic and be environmentally friendly. The album is great to play at home and perfect for Dee Jays who will find good dance-floor filling songs.
