Studebaker John Grimaldi was born in an Italian-American section of Chicago and started playing harmonica at age 7. Under the spell of music he heard on Maxwell Street, Chicago’s famed blues melting pot, Grimaldi began performing as Studebaker John and the Hawks in the ‘70s. The band name referenced the Studebaker Hawk, a car Grimaldi still owns today, and was also intended as a tribute to his friend, J.B. Hutto and the Hawks. John began playing guitar after a life-changing experience of seeing Hound Dog Taylor and the Houserockers perform. “…Hound Dog started playing, hitting notes that sent chills up and down my spine. He was versatile and powerful and would play rhythm as well as leads. I left there knowing what I wanted to do. I had to play slide guitar.”

Avanti Records is pleased to release a brand new album by Studebaker John, master slide guitarist and blues harpist. Self-Made Man features the trio format that Studebaker John has used in his live performances for the last few years, and was recorded with two of Chicago’s best rhythm players and frequent Studebaker John touring partners, bassist Bob Halaj (Big Twist, Chicago Rhythm & Blues Kings, Eddy Clearwater, Son Seals) and drummer Willie “The Touch” Hayes (Big Twist, Chicago Rhythm & Blues Kings, Magic Sam, Junior Wells, Buddy Guy, Luther Allison, Koko Taylor, Son Seals, Carey Bell).

Self-Made Man contains nearly 80 minutes of all original steamy blues and smokin’ blues-rock, incorporating Chicago, boogie, swamp, swing, and harmonica blues, all recorded with a live-in-the-studio sound that is true to Studebaker John’s stage performances.

It is undeniable, this Covid-19 pandemic, better known as Coronavirus, has destabilized us all, put us almost on our knees and for this reason today it is even more necessary to get up to study how to start again.

This is what Max De Bernardi and Veronica Sbergia are doing, from their Milanese home. After seeing their region get sick, after having to give up a full-bodied series of concerts, including a long tour on British soil that would have seen them busy throughout the month of June, the most folk couple in Milan decided to take advantage of the "forced confinement" time to work hard. And for a musician to work is to study, the instrument but also the culture of music that they propose, to make it more and more them, giving their songs that personality that elevates them compared to the simple performances of known songs.

Veronica, moreover, as a recent member of the board of Italian Blues Union is quite active in her new voluntary activity in favor of a "just cause", studying together with her travel companions modern proposals. This is knowing how to react and, meanwhile, here they come out with a new record, a 7-track EP where together with Max & Veronica we find the trusted Dario Polerani and his magical double bass and the Hispanic (but of Argentine origin) friend Chino Swinglide on resophonic guitar and vocals. " Don't Knock !!! "Is the title of this CD on behalf of Veronica Sbergia Quartet , a dip in the American sounds of the years between the two wars, where the blues had started to sprout also contaminating white music, in that explosive mixture that would have - a few decades later - led to the birth of rock'n'roll.

It seems easy to be able to play a music of almost a century back and, instead, there is nothing more difficult and you must be a true and prepared professional with a lot of love in your heart to be credible and convey the right atmosphere. In Italy and Europe few like Max De Bernardi and Veronica Sbergia are able to interpret this mix of blues, hillbilly, swing, doo-wop and gospel with such naturalness, the Americans themselves tell us.

Othman Wahabi is a Moroccan-Canadian singer-songwriter, guitarist, multi-instrumentalist and music producer who has carved out his own niche in blues. Best known for his slide guitar work, versatile vocals and eclectic records that are diversity of moods and styles.

Othman's sound is a mix made of blues, rock, roots, soul, jazz, reggae as well as other formats of musical expression.
Some of his imaginative compositions are marked by a deliberate eclecticism while other songs stay true to the traditional blues formula of compelling vocals and down-home guitar.
Creating a perfect balance between tradition and contemporary experimentation, Othman is a truly unique artist in today's music. He is also the founding member of the spiritual muslim jazz Mu'min Flow and the Co-founder of the punk reggae rap collective Raging Indigenous under the nickname of Oth L'indigene.

Born September 26, 1983 in Casablanca Morocco and based in Montreal, QC Canada since 2005.
He grew up hearing and listening to the blues, Jazz, reggae and rock & roll records that his father, a big time music lover played in the house.
Othman picked up the guitar around the age of 12 and played his first show at the age of 15 with his co founded band Keops he also fronted a short lived blues rock band called Voodoo.

There’s a whole lotta history between the Grateful Dead and Pennsylvania. The Dead performed 101 shows in the Keystone State between 1968 and 1995, placing it third on the list of states played, behind only California and New York. And various offshoots of the GD have continued to visit frequently in the quarter century since. Keybank Pavilion, in a suburb of Pittsburgh, opened in the early 90s, just in time to host the Grateful Dead one time (albeit several corporate re-namings ago), and so was fully prepared to welcome back the distinguished alumni and newer recruits that comprise Dead & Company on a warm nearly-summer evening in June of 2017.

Heading into the second half of the tour, the band’s momentum continues unabated with one of the most dependable of opening selections, “Feel Like A Stranger,” Bob Weir and John Barlow’s tale of romantic alienation set to a dance beat. John Mayer takes over for the beloved Pigpen standby “Easy Wind,” which is followed by such first-set faves as “Cassidy,” “West L.A. Fadeaway,” “Row Jimmy, “Cumberland Blues” and a ferocious (and, all these years later, still all-too-timely) “Throwing Stones” to bring the opening stanza to a powerful close.

“Jack Straw” takes an unusual spot in the setlist as a second-set opener and, even more surprisingly, ends not with its customary harmonious major chord but with the gloriously dissonant and gnarly tonal cluster that signals the start of “Viola Lee Blues,” the Dead’s electrified reworking of one the earliest items from their jug band prehistory. “Viola” morphs into “He’s Gone,” followed by “The Wheel” (with John playfully paraphrasing the Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs classic “Stay (Just A Little Bit Longer)” in the song’s “Won’t you try just a little bit harder” refrain. A deceptively gentle reggae-flavored groove on the coda only makes the thunderous transition into “The Other One” that much more potent, and the ensuing “Drums>Space>Other One Pt. 2” serves to heat things up even more. The band slows the pace for a tender “Wharf Rat,” only to turn it right back up for a hard-driving “Casey Jones” to cap the set, and the high spirits continue through the upbeat “Liberty” encore.

Andrew Alli is a Richmond, Va native.He took up music relatively later in life at the age of 20. After being inspired by a busker playing harmonica on the street one day, he hit the local music store and a harmonica of his own. From that point on, Andrew committed himself to learning the history of the instrument. He very soon fell in love with the blues and began studying all of the harmonica greats including Big Walter Horton, Little Walter, Sonny Boy Williamson, Junior wells, and more.

He has developed his own unique style of playing, while still paying his respects to his biggest influences from the past. Throughout the years he has toured with dozens of musicians both domestically and abroad. Currently he leads the band "Andrew Alli and the Mainline" with Ivan Appelrouth on guitar, Chaz Hibbler on drums, and Ken Kellner on bass.

Andrew plays in a duo with local musician Josh Small and Georgia based musician Jontavious Willis. Andrew and Josh provide a unique blend of acoustic blues, folk, and soul music with a honest and loving approach.

Stoney and the House Rockers' latest release Cruisin' For A Bluesin' is a surprisingly good release from this Florida-based group led by Exeter native Stoney, aka Barry Burnham. It's really hard to capture a classic blues sound in this day of contemporary blues, where shredding guitar solos and horn heavy backing sections rule the genre. Stoney and his mates do a good job of celebrating the essence of the blues, which is, get people up and movin' — with the band seamlessly making themselves a part of the audience.

Stoney himself has great vocal capabilities backed with stellar harmonica playing. He takes pride in letting his influences ooze from the instrument and he does so very tastefully all the while adding his own flavor to the mix. One of the better tunes on the CD that showcase Stoney's versatility as a harp player is his ode to the great harmonica player Toots Thieleman, "Tribute to Toots". Guitarist Freddie King rode to fame in the early '60s with a spate of catchy instrumentals which became instant bandstand fodder for fellow bluesmen and white rock bands alike. Employing a more down-home (thumb and finger picks) approach to the B.B. King single-string style of playing, King enjoyed success on a variety of different record labels. Furthermore, he was one of the first bluesmen to employ a racially integrated group on-stage behind him. Influenced by Eddie Taylor, Jimmy Rogers, and Robert Jr. Lockwood, King went on to influence the likes of Eric Clapton, Mick Taylor, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and Lonnie Mack, among many others.

Trickbag's newest album’s title 25 Years of Houserockin’ Rhythm’? N’ Blues!? might lead some fans to think that this is some kind of career retrospective, compilation or a re-hashing of older material. It isn’t. It is all brand new, original material which is a celebration of what makes this Stockholm, Sweden, based ensemble of international musicians so good.

Maybe a little trickbag history is in order here. 25 years have passed since vocalist Tommy Moberg began playing under the name trickbag. The band name came by way of New Orleans rhythm & blues pioneer Earl King and his song of the same name. Many personnel changes have taken place and as Tommy Moberg states in this album’s liner notes, “…the list is too long to mention but the recruiting of double bass player Lars Näsman turned out to be a milestone in the band’s history.” Joining trickbag in the late 90’s and playing on the band’s second album, Afternoon Mint, Näsman, along with Moberg became the driving force and creative backbone of trickbag.

Now twenty years down the road from that seminal second album, trickbag has just released their 8th album. Here they seamlessly mix blues, rhythm & blues and first-generation rock & roll into a cocktail that is irresistibly fun. One of the entertaining parts of this band is that it is a true ensemble in every sense of that word. The detailed songwriting credits reveal a true collaborative effort.

Of course, any album is only as good as the material and these twelve songs are simply outstanding. From songs that evoke a Gulf Coast R&B sensibility like Come Get It and Ida-Lee to 60’s style garage rockers such as Rimshot and Kakaddoo and nearly everything in between, 25 Years… has it all. A personal favorite is Highways 1. It is an homage to my home state where trickbag has been warmly embraced on their visits here.

Trickbag is of course Moberg and Näsman. They are joined by fellow Swedes Fredrick von Werder on piano and organ and Johnan Swensson on drums. Additionally, harp man extraordinaire, and a star in his own right, Steve “West” Weston, has for several years now been a permanent member of the ensemble. His solo album West Street was the BLUES JUNCTION Productions Blues Album of the Year in 2018. That album included Finnish guitarist Tomi Leino. Like Weston, this Helsinki based musician also has been a member of trickbag for many years. He also has a very active solo career with his very accomplished Tomi Leino Trio. His guitar playing can be heard on numerous recordings from musicians all over the world. His authoritative attack on his instrument is a big part of what gives trickbag their distinctive bravado and makes 25 Years of Houserockin’ Rhythm’? N’ Blues!? so thoroughly enjoyable.

In the blues rich part of the planet known as Scandinavia, trickbag has emerged as heavyweight champions. 25 Years of Houserockin’ Rhythm’? N’ Blues!? is the knockout punch that proves this point. This album receives my highest recommendation and is a very serious candidate for the 2019 BLUES JUNCTION Productions Album of the Year. ~David Mac

If contemporary blues has a long-term future in the 21st century, it's very likely that guitarist Larry McCray will continue to play a recurring role in its ongoing development. Beginning with this 1990 debut album, Ambition, and continuing into the new millennium, McCray has signaled both a strong commitment to the tradition and the vision to usher the genre in exciting new directions.

McCray's first influence on guitar was none other than his sister, Clara, who toured regionally around Arkansas with her own combo, the Rockets. Clara never got to record her Freddie King-styled blues for posterity -- but her little brother has at least partially made up for that omission. Larry followed Clara up to Saginaw, Michigan in 1972. She turned him on to the joys of the three Kings (B.B., Freddie, and Albert), Albert Collins, and Magic Sam, and Larry added superheated rock licks (à la Jimi Hendrix and the Allman Brothers) to his arsenal as he began playing the local circuit with his brothers Carl on bass and Steve on drums.

Working on General Motors' assembly line occupied a great deal of Larry McCray's time after he finished high school. But he eventually found enough free hours to put together Ambition for Point Blank in a Detroit friend's basement studio. The stunning debut set was a convincing hybrid of blues, rock, and soul, McCray combining the interrelated idioms in sizzling fashion. Suddenly, the stocky young guitarist was touring with labelmate Albert Collins. His 1993 Point Blank encore, Delta Hurricane, was a slicker affair produced by veteran British blues maven Mike Vernon that McCray much preferred to his homemade debut. He followed Delta Hurricane with Meet Me at the Lake in 1996 and Born to Play the Blues in 1998. The bluesman has remained active in the 2000s with albums including 2001's Believe It and Blues Is My Business, 2006's Live on Interstate 75 (his first live outing, recorded in Detroit), and the eponymous Larry McCray in 2007. ~Bill Dahl

Sky knew she wanted to play guitar “right then and there” after a 2014 show near her hometown of Buzet, and she soaked up the influence of Rory Gallagher, Albert King and Stevie Ray Vaughan. But it was two years before she took a leap of faith, leaving her hometown and a career as a pastry chef to brave the music scene of Croatia’s capital city, Zagreb.

Even then, it took all Sky’s rebel spirit to fight her way into contention. The eyes of the music industry rarely turn towards Eastern Europe, and for all its merits, her homeland is no rock ‘n’ roll launchpad (“Everything is a challenge in Croatia”). But talent wins out, and label boss Thomas Ruf’s faith in Sky was quickly repaid by Bad Penny, plus Blues Caravan appearances that challenged tour veterans Mike Zito and Bernard Allison to raise the bar.

Building on the momentum, Woman Named Trouble debuts eight original songs penned by Sky with guitarist Robert Wendt, plus three classic covers – and a fistful of attitude. “This album has a classic blues-rock vibe, but with my own touch,” she explains. “And it’s much heavier than Bad Penny.”

Tracking at Hamburg’s Schaltona Studios with producer Roger Inniss, Sky caught her songs in the bottle with a studio band completed by Artjom Feldtser (bass) and Hanser Schüler (drums). For heavy riffage, try opener Rock ‘N’ Rolla Train, complete with a bee-in-a-bottle lick worthy of Angus Young’s playbook, and Turn It On, whose vicious intro breaks into a seductive vocal (“Can you stand the heat crawling up your spine,” Sky sings, “when she moves her hips, sucks your fingertips?”)

But Sky and Wendt’s songcraft goes far beyond blues-rock. Myriad genres are explored here, from the gorgeous Stonesy country-blues chime of Hard Times, to What’s Going On’s leap into trilling folk, and the mesmerising bass-led funk of Troublemaker. Elsewhere, there’s the stormy Voodoo Mama and the heartache of Call Me If You Need Me, while the rockabilly rave-up of Let’s Go Wild will make you do precisely that. “That song is about last New Year’s Eve in Stuttgart,” Sky grins – leaving the rest to our imagination.

Even when Sky takes on the titans of blues, she makes these covers her own. Her funky spin on Luther Allison’s Life Is A Bitch would surely make the great Chicago bluesman smile down, while Fleetwood Mac’s Oh Well rattles along with an instrumental virtuosity worthy of its creator, Peter Green. Finally, there’s Shadow Play – a highlight of Rory Gallagher’s 1978 album Photo-Finish, dragged thrillingly into modernity with a high-velocity new treatment.

Still just 26, Vanja Sky’s early career has moved equally fast. From dive bars and dead-ends to headline tours and supports with the mighty UFO – not to mention “meeting so many beautiful people on the road” – the highlights since 2017 would make that young Croatian gunslinger pinch herself. Now, Woman Named Trouble leaves no doubt there’s plenty more trouble to come. “Besides being tons of fun to make,” she reflects, “I think we did a great job with the music. I’m very proud of this album…”

Fresh off their appearance at the 2020 international Blues Challenge semifinals, where they proudly represented their hometown of Santa Clarita, California, Jim Gustin and Truth Jones (Jeri Goldenhar) are set to release their third album, “Lessons Learned.” The eleven new tracks reflect the group’s diversity, talent and experience growing up in the melting pot of Southern California. The new album is a collection of driving blues, funky soul, sultry jazz and American rock ‘n’ roll that speaks to the tales of wild nights in bar rooms, Sunday mornings in church, times of heartbreak, and years of struggle and the wisdom received that fill the songs delivered by two powerful and emotive vocalists. Gustin and Jones are backed by the muscular rhythm section of bassist Scott Duncan and drummer Chuck Strong, along with versatile keyboardist Steve Alterman, and the dynamic saxophonist Lawrence Tamez.

Produced by Gustin, the band once again called on the legendary California music man, Terry Wilson, to co-engineer, mix and master the project, and invited several special guests to join in the sessions, including Tower of Power trumpeter Lee Thornburg, and Harp Attack man Chris LeRoi Hansen, guitar man Tommy Marsh (Crooked Eye Tommy), sax guru Jim Scimonetti, and Jones’ daughter Jill Hormon, who sang on a few tracks. The whole family gathered at Mystic Mountain Sound Studios and followed the directive inscribed on the band’s logo “Verum Quaero” - to seek truth.

The set opens with a swinging duet that recounts an all too familiar tale in the blues about the aftereffects of having a few too many, ’I’ve Been Drinking.’ Jones takes the reins on the horn driven ‘I Heard About You’ and gives a would-be-suitor fair warning that she is wise to his wily ways. Gustin then frames some topical social commentary over a gritty boogie for his pointed sermon ‘The Truth.’

Jones shows off her dynamic range on the sultry piano-driven jazz ballad ‘When This Ship Sails,’ with Tamez echoing her heartache on mournful tenor sax. Gustin leads the bump and grind of ‘I Hate To See You Go’ with the smoky bravado baritone and wailing guitar of a seasoned bluesman. The duo then offers Shakespearean advice on the rumba ‘Never Forget,’ spelling out counsel on how a gentleman should treat a lady. Jones digs into the driving Memphis soul of ‘All You Ever Bring Me Is The Blues,’ featuring hot solos from Gustin, Alterman and Tamez.

Everyone then gathers on the back porch for an acoustic session, trading stories of those “lessons learned” in youth on ‘Never Too Big For The Blues,’ with LeRoi and Crooked Eye Tommy offering sweet affirmations. Gustin then offers up some Bobby “Blue” Bland styled testimony of his affections on the burning track ‘Rockslide.’ Dulcet piano and saxophone open the passionate ballad ‘My Love Is True’ that builds to an emotional climax exploiting the power of Gustin and Jones’ vocal and theatrical skills. The gospel rocker ‘Three Things’ brings the album to a finale, with its straightforward message that all it takes is a little faith, hope and love to make the world a better place.

Austin Walkin' Cane is a blues singer, songwriter and slide guitarist that performs acoustic solo, duo & electric band sets. Austin Walkin’ Cane has toured Australia, Nepal, Colombia, France, Germany, England, Wales, and the US, from New Orleans, Louisiana to Juneau, Alaska with only a guitar & suitcase in hand.

Austin walked for ten years with a cane due to an arterial venous malformation at birth. While performing on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, a homeless man called out "Hey Walkin' Cane got some spare change for a brother?!" Austin took the jibe as his nickname. In 1996, after years of battling the inevitable, his left leg was amputated below the knee. A year after the surgery, he returned to the music scene stronger & without need of a cane.

In 2002, Austin & Karen Starks were married at Sun Studios in Memphis, Tennessee and began recording his 706 Union Ave. cd at the legendary studio immediately after the ceremony. "The thought of getting married & recording in the same room where many of my heroes took their first steps was incredible." Austin Walkin' Cane is proud to be sponsored by National Reso-Phonic Guitars, Ernie Ball Strings, Dr. Z Amplifiers & Rocky Mountain Slide Co.

AWC's 2008 cd, Murder of a Blues Singer, was inspired by an after hour diner conversation with blues legend Robert Jr. Lockwood. "The stories were flowing like the grease off our plates", subsequently the album is saturated in classic delta blues, as were the tales of Lockwood's stepfather, Robert Johnson. Mr. Lockwood had agreed to perform on the record, but fate had changed that path. The Walkin' Cane Band captured the perfect "live in the studio" feeling that Austin & co-writer Chris Allen had envisioned for these songs. The band is a well oiled machine. Special guests on Murder of a Blues Singer include Colin Dussault, Eroc Sosinski and one of Cleveland's finest gospel groups, the Prayer Warriors.

In 2011, an acoustic cd, A World Of Blues, was released. The Allen/Charanghat original songs were recorded live at the Brothers Lounge as a testament to Walkin' Cane living on the road. The album uses excerpts of Austin's world travels in addition to the show recorded in the heart of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame city.

During the summer of 2014, One Heart Walkin' was recorded in two days at the historic G.A.R. Hall in Peninsula, OH. Built in 1850, the former schoolhouse & Civil War Veteran's hangout, set the perfect mood for this album. Listening to Cane's most recent album is like being a passenger on the old Illinois Central Railroad. These “Damn Fine Blues”, take the listener from the south side of Chicago, through the deep south of the Mississippi Delta. You’ll stop in Memphis, Clarksdale & Bentonia, and ride to the end of the line of New Orleans, Louisiana.

AVID Roots continues with its Four Classic album series with a re-mastered 2CD Second Set release from Lightnin' Hopkins, complete with original artwork and liner notes. 'Sings The Blues'; 'Lightnin' Hopkins'; 'Blues In My Bottle' and 'Walkin' This Road by Myself' It is not surprising that in an extraordinary musical career that lasted over 50 years, Sam Lightnin' Hopkins became the most recorded of all the legendary bluesmen. Primarily a country blues singer and guitarist from the old tradition that included Robert Johnson, Blind Blake, Blind Lemon Jefferson and Charlie Patton, to name but a few, Lightnin' outlasted them all to become quite literally a living legend when the blues revival hit the US and UK in the 1950s and '60s. He had met Blind Lemon Jefferson at the age of 8 which became a defining moment in his life, and went on to become his accompanist for a while. Just think of that for a moment? The history and the stories the man must have carried around inside his head! Lightnin' had been trying to break into the recording business from the late 1930s but it wasn't until the mid-1940s that he was discovered singing and playing in the streets in Houston and was signed to Aladdin Records of Los Angeles. Houston was to become his home base from then on. But of course, Lightnin' had to earn money, life was very tough, especially for a black man in the USA. He became a prolific recording artist over the years and was one of the spearhead artists during the folk/ blues revival of the early 1960s. Our four fine selections include his album "Lightnin' Hopkins" which saw Lightnin' return to his roots with just a guitar and voice. Our album includes the rare, and lengthy original essay booklet written by legendary blues writer Samuel Charters and re-tells a fascinating story of his search to find Lightnin amongst his perhaps rightly suspicious associates and family before finally tracking the great man down. What followed was music playing by Lightnin' as he used to be heard, just by himself with his guitar, the results as you will hear, are stunning!

Prove It On Me presents Rory's unique take on songs from phenomenal female performers and songwriters: Arizona Dranes, Elvie Thomas Merline Johnson, Madlyn Davis, Helen Humes, Rosetta Howard, Lottie Kimbrough, Gertrude ''Ma'' Rainey and Memphis Minnie. Rory's goal for this release was to spotlight some of the more obscure names of the genre, some of whom did not become widely known ''despite their immense talent''. All songs are given the ''Rory Block Band'' treatment, while showcasing their own individual style and contribution to the genre.

Prove It On Me was produced by Rory Block and Rob Davis. All vocals on the new disc are by Rory Block, who also played all the guitar and bass parts on her Signature Model Martin Guitars. In addition, all drums and percussion heard on the new disc - guitar bongos, hat boxes, plastic storage tubs, oatmeal boxes and wooden spoons - were played by Rory.

Whether real blues, blues rock, roots music or americana, Watermelon Slim is a master of many genres. On March 27th The Boston-born artist, born William P. Homans in 1949, released his latest live album "Traveling Man", which was released as a double CD package designed by A Man Called Wrycraft.

The Blues Foundation ennobled his 2019 album "Church of the Blues" with Blues Music Award nominations as Album of the Year and Traditional Album of the Year. Watermelon Slim received over 20 Blues Music Award nominations during his career and was awarded the prestigious award in the categories Band of the Year, Album of the Year and DVD of the Year.

At home on the concert stages, the blueser feels most comfortable when he does his profession with slide guitar and harmonica: celebrating the blues. "Traveling Man" captures exactly this, the artist's own, live atmosphere. Little Bill and the Blue Notes are an institution more than a band. Since 1956, Bill Engelhart and various lineups have been wowing audiences with their take on rhythm and blues. In 1959 the Bluenotes made the national charts with the teenage love song “I Love an Angel” and since then have released a bevy of recordings.

In 2010, Little Bill was honored with the release of “Big Blues for Little Bill” – a compilation of his songs redone by NW artists such as Duffy Bishop, Billy Stoops and Polly O’Keary. The disc coincided with Bill’s 70th birthday with shows at the Triple Door and the Rialto Theatre. All proceeds from the sales of the cd went to the Dystonia Medical Research Foundation – a cause that is near to Bill’s heart.

Over the years, Engelhart has had the pleasure of working with some of the finest musicians in the northwest including Jo Johanson, Isaac Scott and Buck England. In addition, he has opened for legendary acts such as BB King, Robert Lockwood Jr. and Buddy Guy. The singer, songwriter and bass player has a roomful of awards including NW Hall of Fame, the W.C. Handy Award and the BB Life Time Achievement Award.

His current lineup consist of master guitarist Billy ‘Stapes’ Stapleton and the tight and steady multiple award winning Billy Barner on the drums.

Albert Collins (born October 1, 1932, Leona, TX, USA - died November 24, 1993, Las Vegas, NV, USA) was an American blues guitarist, singer and (occasional) harmonica player. Husband of Gwendolyn Collins (married in 1968). Collins was the embodiment of the Texas blues guitar style, using non-standard tuning, and slashing out blocked chords and sharp flurries of treble notes to produce an "ice-cold" sound from his Fender Telecaster as a consequence, he had many nicknames such as the "Ice Man" and "The Master of the Telecaster".

A warm, funky voice, but just as sober and intimate. Bai Kamara Jr’s music is a mix of soul, blues, roots, swamp, voodoo and jazz influences. Bai, son of the former Sierra Leonean ambassador in Brussels, who grew up in the United Kingdom and has lived in Brussels for over 25 years, is a committed singer-songwriter who reveals his African origins in his music. He has shared the stage with international artists such as Habib Koité, Cassandra Wilson, Rokia Traoré, was the opening act of Vanessa Paradis’ ‘Love Album International Tour’ in 2014 (25 dates) and sang in duo with Dani Klein from Vaya Con Dios as well as being her supporting act.

His involvement with NGOs has led to a collaboration with the world star Youssou N’Dour. Two of Bai’s songs were recorded by the Spanish director Paco Torres for the film “El Vuelo Del Tren (The Magic of Hope)”. AVID Roots continues with its Four Classic Roots album series with a re-mastered 2CD release by Lightnin' Hopkins, complete with original artwork and liner notes. 'Lightnin' And The Blues'; 'Country Blues'; 'Lightnin' In New York' and 'Mojo Hand' A Blues man the like of which they write 'they don't make 'em like that anymore'. Born in Texas in 1912, Sam Lightnin' Hopkins began his musical journey into the blues at the age of 8 when he met the legendary and mysterious Blues man, Blind Lemon Jefferson at a local church social. So began a kind of informal apprenticeship when Hopkins accompanied Jefferson to many of his musical engagements soaking up as much as he could from the great man. By his teens he had hooked up with his cousin, another blues man, Texas Alexander with whom he travelled and worked until being discovered in 1946. Re-christened Lightnin' in partnership with pianist Wilson Smith, re-christened Thunder, the pair became Aladdin recording artists. The career of Lightnin' Hopkins then followed much the same path as many fellow blues men. Success of sorts in the 1940's and 1950's before then slipping into obscurity only to be re-discovered during the Blues/Folk revival in the 1960's. He would go on to become the most recorded bluesman in history and was voted in Rolling Stone magazine Top 100, as the 71st greatest guitarist of all time.

Nico Brina is one of Europe's top-class Boogie Woogie and Blues pianists. After more than 3'000 concerts in 19 countries and numerous awards (Prix Walo 1995, entry in the Guinness Book of Records 1996, guest performance at the Olympic Games in Athen 2004, nomination for the German Records Award 2014), Brina celebrated his 35th stage anniversary in 2019 and ended the year with a brilliant performance at an international Boogie festival in French Normandy. On this occasion, Brina called all his faithful backing musicians (the "Lucky Blues Travelers") into the studio and produced an album full of contrasts, which will thrill Boogie fans as well as Blues freaks and Rock'n'Roll lovers.

15 of total 20 tracks have been recorded exclusively for the production, and 5 are from previous albums. This soundtrack to the film written and directed by Craig Brewer is as steeped in the Southern blues as his Hustle and Flow was in hip-hop. The biggest surprise here is how well actor Samuel L. Jackson (who seems to have a thing for "Snake" films) holds his own as a blues singer against selections from Son House and R.L. Burnside. He sounds like a throwback to the classic Delta bluesmen on "Just Like a Bird Without a Feather," does a convincing take on the Blind Lemon Jefferson title track, and rocks the juke joint on "Alice Mae" and a down-and-dirty recasting of "Stack-O-Lee." Produced by the Bo-Keys' Scott Bomar (who also scored Brewer's previous movie), the 17-cut soundtrack features a kaleidoscopic array of blues, from the primal throb of the Black Keys' "When the Lights Go Out" and the funk of Bobby Rush's classic "Chicken Heads" to the spiritual lilt of Precious Bryant's "Morning Train" and the North Mississippi Allstars' expansive finale, "Mean Ol' Wind Died Down." --Don McLeese

No one in the world today is rooted in Chicago blues as firmly as producer/bassist/keyboard player Alex Dixon, and that comes through loud and clear on this CD. Serving as the recording debut of vocalist Lewis “Big Lew” Powell, it delivers a powerful reminder that the old-school sounds of the Windy City are just as important and viable today as they were in their heyday in the ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s.

Alex was raised by grandfather Willie Dixon – without question one of the most important bluesmen ever, and grew up in a home that welcomed a steady stream of superstars. He took piano lessons from Leonard “Baby Doo” Caston of Big Three Trio fame, his uncle Butch and Little Brother Montgomery. And at age 10, he played keys in various styles as Willie narrated as the duo laid the groundwork for what would become the international Blues in the Schools movement.

Now based in the San Francisco Bay area, Alex toured with Willie for four years and wrote co-wrote 40 tunes with him, including “Study War No More,” a key cog in his grandfather’s last album, the Grammy-winning Hidden Charms. As an adult, he’s a past-president of the Dixon family’s Blues Heaven Foundation, and currently serves as royalty director of Hoochie Coochie Music, Willie’s extensive songwriting catalog that’s been covered by Cream, the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin and hundreds of others.

This is the third CD Alex has written and produced, following The Vintage Room, a 2007 blues-rock collaboration with guitarist Cash McCall billed as The Blues Experience, and Rising From the Ashes in 2009, billed as The Alex Dixon Band. Dixon met Powell – the drummer for Chicago vocalist Nellie “Tiger” Travis – at the 2015 Chicago Blues Festival, fell in love with his voice – a powerful baritone reminiscent, but rougher than his grandfather – and has been developing this project ever since.

Powell’s featured throughout with Dixon doubling on electric and upright bass and piano. They’re surrounded by several of the most important second- and third-generation blues artists today, including Sugar Blue and Steve Bell – Carey’s son – on harmonica and Alvino Bennett (Koko Taylor, Mighty Joe Young) on drums with Melvin Taylor and Gino Matteo on guitars throughout with guest appearances from Rico McFarland and Joey Delgado on two cuts each. Alex’s 13-year-old daughter Leila and Maori sound weaver Whaia sit in on backing vocals. ~Marty Gunther

Composed of seven originals penned by Alex and four familiar covers from Willie’s catalog, this album was recorded at EastWest Studios in Hollywood, Calif., the site of the elder Dixon’s final recordings and fulfills Alex’s desire to deliver music with an authentic traditional Chicago blues sound.

Blue explodes out of the gate to open “Nothing New Under the Sun” with Powell hot on his heels, proving he’s a blues belter of the first order, albeit with limited range. It’s a hard-hitting shuffle that takes its time before flowing into “Spider in My Stew.” A soul-blues hit for Buster Benton in 1973, it gets a complete makeover and comes across with an uneasy feel that enforces the subject: that the singer suspects his lady’s cheating.

The tempo picks up for medium-paced shuffle “The Real McCoy” in which Powell cautions that he can spot a phony in a glance and warns: “The time right here/Is all we got/I’m gonna love you/If you like it or not.” An unhurried harp solo opens the ballad “My Greatest Desire,” the original complaint that the singer’s given his lady everything she wanted, but he’s in agony now that she’s gone.

A block of three Willie numbers — “When I Make Love” first recorded in 1973 by Margie Evans, “Howlin’ for My Darlin’” — co-written with Howlin’ Wolf and released by Chess in 1959 and “Groanin’ the Blues,” first laid down by Otis Rush on Cobra in 1957 – follow before four more originals fill out the set.

The percussive “10,000 Miles Away” – which features Bell and Whaia — revisits the separation theme, this time with Powell stating he has to move halfway around the globe because his love’s still strong before the action heats dramatically for the stop-time pleaser, “Chi-Town Boogie,” featuring McFarland. “I Want to Be Loved” borrows heavily from Willie’s “I Want to Be Loved” before the band reprises the previous song as “Chi-Town Boogie Instrumental.”
