Meet Big Mike & The Booty Papas! Big Mike, Hal, Cuzz have been playing music for an accumulative total of 100 years! That's a lot of gigs! They have been playing interactively for the past 10 years. 1996 was a new beginning for these fellows. After spending 30 years playing every kind of gig known to musicians, Big Mike & The Booty Papas were formed from many jamming Sunday nights at The Back Porch Lounge in Macon, GA. Many different players that include Ronnie Hammond (A.R.S.), Mike Causey (Stillwater), Phil Palma, Ken Wynn, Mike Copeland & Elbert Durham helped to make those nights special, along with lots of other musicians that dropped by. Ronnie Hammond played bass and Mike Copeland played lead regularly with the group, formerly known as "Big Mike & Friends". These hot sessions eventually led to the grouping of the Big Mike, Cuzz, Chris Crider and Greg Stewart on drums and Ed Smith on sax.

Next it was off to a recording session at Phoenix Sound (formerly Capricorn Studios Macon, GA). Skip Slaughter, engineer of Phoenix Sound, added his welcome expertise to the project and 4 cover tunes and 7 original songs were born of the session. 6 of the original tunes were penned by Big Mike, and one instrumental by Chris Crider (CC). Together they show the innovative, exciting and fresh new approach to a style of music that this group truly loves. The band's next project also came from the same line up but, adding Walt Scott on keyboard, Mike Causey on guitar, David Ragsdale on violin, Jimmy Hall sang "She Caught The Kati" with Big Mike and "Harp" and a real 54 voice gospel group The Gospel Movement and the Atlanta Horns.

This CD was also loaded with some real good originals and a really good cover of a Lynard Skynard tune, "Curtis Lowe", and they have just finished a new project with the current line up. The new project was recorded at "Wild Bean Studios" in Macon, GA with the old friend Michael "Goose" Goodrich. They also are on world wide Television on the Food Network, "Food Nation with Bobby Flay". Big Mike & The Booty Papas are: Michael "Big Mike" Ventimiglia (guitar, vocals), Hal Register (guitar, vocals), Glenn "Cuzz" Hutchison (bass guitar, vocals) and Jerome "J.T." Thomas (drums) and Tony Cooper on (keyboards). They have 3 CDs, were nominated for 2 Grammy's in 1998 (first round).

They play 260-300 dates a year and have played with or opened for acts such as SOS Band, Maceo Parker, Jim Dandy and Black Oak, Eddie Kirkland, Johnny Winter, Bob Dylan, Jr. Walker, Government Mule, Warren Haynes, Steve Morse, Les Dudeck, Jimmy Hall, Ronnie Hammond & The Atlanta Rhythm Section, Wet Willie, and Dr. Hook.

Big Mike & The Booty Papas - Red Hot Blues

Year: 1996
Bitrate: MP3@320K/s
Time: 52:28
Size: 121,3 MB
Styles: Electric blues
Scans: Full

1. Stop Doggin' Me Around (4:14)
2. She's Fine (4:05)
3. Rats 'N' Roaches (5:20)
4. Treadin' Water (5:00)
5. Blind Man (5:59)
6. Black Drawers (5:46)
7. Spreadin' The News (4:06)
8. Take A Chance (4:41)
9. Blues Nite Out (4:49)
10. You Win Again (4:15)
11. Slaw Dawg (4:09)

This band began playing together in Macon, GA, in 1995. However, their individual careers began in the '60s and '70s and span genres from country to southern rock to jazz. The musical maturity comes through loud and clear on Red Hot Blues, with seven originals and four covers. Front man Mike Ventimiglia (vocals, guitar) has a big voice similar to that of Colonel Bruce Hampton. The fragmented funk of Hampton's Aquarium Rescue Unit is recalled in a few spots too, especially on "Spreadin' the News."

Red Hot Blues offers a little bit of everything, from the swing of "Black Drawers" to the soulful R&B of "Treadin' Water." They even serve up some acoustic slide on the strangely amusing "Rats-n-Roaches." One of the brightest spots on this release is the alto sax work of Ed Smith. His tone and attack are impressive; sweet yet strong. You really have to appreciate the dual leads he does with guitarist Chris Crider and the jazzy solo in the Hank Williams tune "You Win Again" - one of the nicest songs on the album.

Other standouts include the opener "Doggin' Me Around," which features some very smooth rhythm guitar and fills as well as the instrumental closer, "Slaw Dawg." Red Hot Blues is well-produced, with clean and perfectly balanced instrumentation. An all-around crowd pleaser! /Ann Wickstrom, AllMusic

Big Mike and The Booty Papas have changed some of this project and it is funk on top of the blues and has that European sound and big city feel. Some blues are defiantly here as you know because Big Mike is a real bluesman and the sound is defiantly one you will recognize as Macon, Ga. !!!

In 1995, international blues sensation Big Mike and the Booty Papas began grooving their way into the hearts of audiences the world over. Based in Macon, Georgia, an area rich in musical heritage, Big Mike and the Booty Papas breathe new life into the genre. A two-time Grammy nominated group, with loyal fans who will tell you that it only takes one night with Big Mike and the Booty Papas and you’ll be feelin’ just right. These cats are all about having fun, makin’ you move your feet, a lot of laughin’ and a whole lot of lovin’.

At the core of this seasoned group of musicians is Michael Anthony Ventimiglia better known as “Big Mike” and seasoned guitarist, Hal Register. Big Mike carries a “big” voice and Sir Hal offers up some very tasty guitar offerings. This is a win/win combination that must be heard to experience. These Pros will tell you that they are no young bucks. Yet, everyone knows the finer, most beloved things in life are best seasoned with a lifetime of love, a touch of heartache, investment of time and hard work. It doesn’t hurt to have a little swagger to go with it and there’s no shortage of that with “Big Mike” and his fellow Booty Papas.
