Soul-blues singer Tad Robinson, was born and raised in Manhattan. At the age of 30, he settled in the second city, drawn there by Chicago’s rich blues heritage. His apprenticeship in the Windy City as a harmonica player led him to the blues clubs and his pure soul inflected voice kept him in demand fronting bands and as a top-tier session singer. After signing with the Delmark label in the 90’s, Robinson became a regular on the blues circuit in the U.S. and in Europe, and has collected two W.C. Handy Award nominations and eight Blues Music Award nominations in the ensuing years. Along the way he’s been drawn to musicians and kindred souls whose creativity thrives at the nexus of soul and blues.

It’s been six years since Robinson released the Blues Music Award-nominated "Real Street". Robinson proves on his new Delmark album "Soul In Blue" that he still has plenty of skin in the blues game. Six of these tracks were recorded in Indianapolis with his longtime road band, plus special guests, including long time cohorts and friends, guitarists extraordinaire, Alex Schultz and Dave Specter. Four tracks were cut in Chicago at Delmark’s Riverside Studio with the Delmark All-Stars (Mike Wheeler, Roosevelt Purifoy, Carlos Showers, Larry Williams, Pooky Styx). You’ll savor the sounds of a set of mostly self-penned songs, along with two covers of Wilson Pickett and Arthur Adams rounding out the list. Real Street, the latest soul-blues album from eight-time Blues Music Award-nominated singer/harmonica player Tad Robinson. Produced by Robinson and recorded by Scott Bomar at Electraphonic Recording, the new disc showcases his soul-drenched vocals and harmonica work backed by the legendary Hi Rhythm Section of Charles Hodges – Hammond organ; Leroy Hodges – bass; and Howard Grimes – drums. They are augmented by Joe Restivo – guitar; Kevin Anker – Wurlitzer electric piano; Marc Franklin – trumpet; Kirk Smothers – sax; and Devin B. Thompson – background vocals.

Tad Robinson will celebrate the new disc with special album release party shows in his Indianapolis hometown, starting on Friday, October 4, at the Jazz Kitchen (5377 North College Ave., Indianapolis), with sets at 7:30pm and 9:30pm. And on Friday, October 18, he’ll perform a special lunchtime show (12:15 - 1:15pm) at the Indianapolis Artsgarden, (110 West Washington, Indianapolis). Additional shows are listed at the end of this press release, including a European tour.

For the recording of Real Street, Robinson traveled to the birthplace of Southern soul, Memphis, Tennessee, and the results are ten glorious tracks of blues-infused and passionate soul music. Throughout six originals and four reimagined covers, Robinson’s singing has never been so focused and fluent in the language of the blues and his subtle harmonica playing adds just the right spice to the mix.

“The Hi-Rhythm Section guys - Howard Grimes, Charles Hodges and Leroy Hodges - brought such wisdom, grace and solidarity to my session,” Tad Robinson says. “I couldn’t have asked for a better vibe in terms of how we all approached playing together. I’m forever grateful.”

Robinson’s vocals and harmonica weave seamlessly into the grooves set down by the band, evoking the days of such soul giants as O.V. Wright and Syl Johnson, both of whom enjoyed some of their best-remembered recordings working with the Hi Rhythm Section. His ability to “soul-ify” such pop songs as “You Got It” and “Make It With You” recall the skill that Al Green exemplified during his glory years in taking a pop standard (such as “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart”) and crafting it into a soul classic.

From the ebullient shuffle, opener, “Changes,” to the poignant immediacy of George Jackson’s ballad, “Search Your Heart,” each song is a showpiece with the Memphis groove-makers’ interlocking parts evoking a timeless Southern soul-blues landscape made new again.

Robinson croons the wry, self-deprecating account of the departure of his bored lover in “Full Grown Woman,” gets gritty and gospel-soulful on the wistful and radio-friendly, “Love In The Neighborhood” and riffs and weaves his way through his joyful reworking of Roy Orbison’s, “You Got It.”

The Memphis veterans lay down a beautiful understated backing for Robinson’s story-telling on Real Street, plucking just the right riff, chord change and color out of the Memphis air, bearing witness to their rarified status as architects of the Southern soul sound.

Real Street is an earthy, straight-from-the-gut-to-the-heart collection that fans of soul and blues music will cherish.

As on his previous four albums, Tad Robinson proves himself an adept soul singer in a very identifiable style on Back in Style. He may be a 53-year-old New Yorker now living in Indianapolis after a long sojourn in Chicago, but from the sound of this record, you would think he had been born and raised in Memphis and that he either was much older or that the disc itself was made 40 years ago.

Robinson's band, beginning with a rhythm section of bassist Steve Gomes (who also contributes heavily to the songwriting) and drummer Robb Stupka, plus keyboard player Kevin Anker alternating on Hammond organ, Wurlitzer, or Fender Rhodes, along with one of three guitarists depending on the track (Alex Schultz, Dan Hovey, or Harold Flood) and a horn section anchored by members of the Memphis Horns, lays down a sound that derives from the Stax Records house band of Booker T. & the MG's and developed through Willie Mitchell's Hi Records band.

Over it, Robinson generally sings in a grainy tenor that sounds like - well, take your pick: Sam Moore, Otis Redding, Brook Benton, Otis Redding, and Al Green all come immediately to mind. As the disc goes on, the listener has the sense of being in a time warp and having been dropped sometime between 1963 and 1973. It's all expertly performed, but since the release date is in 2010, also a bit odd.

Robinson and his fellow musicians do introduce a few minor variations, especially in the album's later tracks. "Half Smile" has an arrangement reminiscent of Norman Whitfield's sinuous Motown productions, bringing to mind Marvin Gaye. "Turn to the Music" has a soul-jazz feel. And the final song, "Get Back to Love," is at least on the road from Memphis to Philadelphia International Records, updating the sound to, say, 1974. On it, Robinson sings in a slightly lower register with a much smoother timbre.

Nominally speaking, the songs are originals written by Robinson and his cohorts, and they are love songs that alternate between contentment and anguish. But that doesn't really matter. The tunes are just platforms for the soul arrangements and Robinson's voice in music that is evocative and sincerely rendered, if derivative by definition. /William Ruhlmann, AllMusic

Sometimes conviction, charm and humor can be as important as performing proficiency. While there's little in the playing or singing of guitarist Dave Specter or vocalist/harmonica player Tad Robinson that you haven't heard before, they so obviously enjoy what they're doing and communicate it so well that you eventually overlook their familiar material and become engrossed in their performances.

The members of the Rockwell Avenue Blues Band have each achieved successes achieved over long parallel careers, but there was some unfinished business to attend to. Longtime bonds, which sometimes elude conscious recognition, drew them to Delmark's Riverside Studio on Chicago's North Rockwell Avenue in October of 2017. It was a joyous musical and artistic reunion. They had all recorded for Delmark over the past decades. Now it was time to join together again, as equals who had shared a lifestyle and craft, each in his own way, each with his own voice. So they took a week away from their routines to share a brief moment, frozen in time on Back To Chicago.

Although Swedish-born and —based saxophonist Jakob Norgren's orchestra has been making waves for several years, Volume 5 is only the second of its recordings to churn up the waters in this estuary. And churn them it does, even though Norgren's blend of R&B, soul, pop, blues and funk far outweighs the album's minimal jazz content.

Norgren's charts, we are told, encompass songs associated with Otis Redding, Beyonce, Etta James, O.V. Wright, Otis Rush and B.B. King, among others, a statement that must go unchallenged here, as none of those performers has earned a place in this listener's lexicon. To put it another way, Norgren's orchestra is swimming and splashing in uncharted waters, which makes a sober appraisal more perplexing than might otherwise be the case. That said, we shall plow ahead with the ardor of a Michael Phelps until that purpose has been achieved.

One thing is clear at the outset: Sweden boasts a surprisingly large number of singers who seem well-versed in these genres, as no less than eight are featured on the album's dozen tracks. Each of them sounds credible, even though that opinion must be tempered by a general unfamiliarity with the music. The last selection ("Well, I Done Got Over It") is especially poignant, as it showcases Sven Zetterberg, one of Sweden's most celebrated soul and blues musicians, who died last year at age sixty-four. The other vocalists are Kristina Talajic ("Love Addict"), Tad Robinson ("Baby, Don't Lose Your Cool"), Graciela Chin A Loi ("Love, Your Magic Spell Is Everywhere," "Suga Mama"), Marino Valle ("Down in the Valley," "That's How Strong My Love Is"), EllyEve ("All I Could Do Was Cry," "Don't Freeze on Me"), Linn Segolson ("Baby, Please Don't Go") and Knock-Out Greg ("You Don't Know," "Working Man").

While Norgren's charts are persuasive and the ensemble well-grounded, whatever splash the album makes rests on one's penchant for soul, blues and their close cousins, R&B and funk, as the album is by no means aimed at a jazz audience. For what it is, however, it seems to be quite well done. ~Jack Bowers

Jakob Norgren Big Band Splash was started in 2004 and on our first two albums Wide Meadow Soul (2005) and East Of The Arctic Circle (2007) we mixed contemporary jazz with soul, blues and even some electronica. In 2010 we shortened the name to just Big Band Splash and decided to let the band develope into a soul/rhythm & blues/soul-jazz orchestra, which was manifested on the album Another Apple. Contemporary jazz would instead be performed under the name Jakob Norgren Jazz Orchestra.

In 2014 we released (digital only) the album Big Band Splash – “The Soul Collection” where we gathered soul tracks from our first three albums. Featured singers are Sven Zetterberg, Marino Valle, Greta, Stella & Sunniva Bondesson (Baskery), Knock-Out Greg and Graciela Chin A Loi.

From The Soul is a club format created by the Top Dogs band with the intention to introduce US artists working in the soul blues tradition to Swedish audiences. The idea was to arrange a series of tours, each featuring a new performer backed up by Top Dogs. When considering which artist to ask, we wanted to focus on the vocal performance and a strong stage presence, the working principle being that blues, first and foremost, is about a singer telling a story. We also wanted to emphasize the soul element, to make the band horn-driven rather then guitar-based.

Tad Robinson has one of the richest and most powerful voices in soul and blues music, and his latest album is not only a triumph of pure singing, but of old-school arranging and song choice as well. The first thing you notice, of course, is Robinson's rich, chesty, rough-but-sweet voice, an instrument that he can use virtuosically but chooses to wield with restraint. The second thing you notice is the horn charts -- on tracks like the album-opening "Long Way Home" and the album-closing "Back for More," the horns deepen and expand the songs' sound, laying a rich and multicolored carpet for Robinson's voice. The songs, most of them modern originals, are almost all excellent as well (the slightly overwrought "He's Movin' In (To Her Life)" and the slightly preachy "When You're Ready" being the only minor exceptions). Robinson isn't afraid to acknowledge his influences; you'll hear a strong hint of Sam Cooke's melodic style in his delivery on the Johnnie Taylor classic "Ain't That Lovin' You (For More Reasons Than One)," and you'll hear touches of Otis Redding here and there as well. But his influences are all well digested and Robinson's sound, traditional as it is, long ago became fully his own. Highly recommended. -- Allmusic.

Inspired by distinguished soul/R&B singers such as O.V. Wright, Z.Z. Hill, Bobby "Blue" Bland, and Otis Clay (who provides backing vocals on two tracks), ex-Dave Specter vocalist Robinson turns in a spectacular performance on his third solo outing. Passionate and emotional, Robinson shifts from classy soul to relaxed blues and easygoing pop (he resurrects the Cornelius Brothers & Sister Rose's chart hit "It's Too Late to Turn Back Now" with stunning results). The legendary Willie Henderson (Tyrone Davis, Jackie Wilson) arranged and conducted the horns, adding some authentic flavor. But it's Robinson's powerful voice and terrific songs (he co-wrote five tracks) that are responsible for this album's success. Like the best singers in his genre, the singer exudes a sure sense of dynamics, laying down a sexy groove like on the title track then exploding into screams and wails that propel the music forward. His version of Robert Ward's "Your Love Is Amazing" finds the gospel heart of the song while adding a pop feel. Kevin McKendree and Benjie Porecki's keyboards and longtime associate Alex Schultz's guitar color and mold the sound without stealing the spotlight. Whether testifying on Little Willie John's hit "Suffering With the Blues" or getting frisky on the funky horn-accented original "Pockets Full of Nothing," Robinson is totally at ease. He swings and shouts with the confidence of a star, but keeps the focus on the songs, not the performance. The sound and production are nearly perfect. Similar to Robert Cray, who traffics in a similar genre, the mix is clear and clean, but not slick. This wonderful album proves Tad Robinson has the pipes and talent to push him into the realm of Delbert McClinton and Curtis Salgado, two popular contemporary R&B singers who have found success with a comparable approach. -- Allmusic.

Tad Robinson is not only a singer extraordinaire but also a songwriter whose blues have been influenced by many sources including Chicago blues, R&B, soul and pop. And there's his great harmonica playing also. Robinson's main man was the late Arthur Alexander, and Tad's high-quality songwriting reflects Alexander's story-in-song emphasis. As on Tad's first solo album, One To Infinity, long-time friend and musical partner Alex Schultz is on guitar. Alex is best known from his work with Rod Piazza and the Mighty Flyers and William Clarke.
As a vocalist, Tad is a serious candidate for crowning as the most commanding white soul-blues singer since the late Eddie Hinton mad his presence known in the '70s. "Since You've Been Gone" inches along with the singer trying to make sense of loss, with only the sweet, economical guitar of Alex Schultz offering solace. The native New Yorker glides up to let syllables fly when enunciating the heartbreaking words of "No Exit Blues," and his confident tenor voice aches with real feeling when sizing up everyday life in "Another Song, Another Day." He's also a superlative harmonica player, his prose crisp and lively on many songs here, and he has an uncommonly intelligent and resourceful soloist and rhythm player in Schultz. The other players (bassist Harlan Terson, keyboardist Kevin McKendree, drummer Jon Hiller and, on two tracks, a horn section) stay alert to Robinson without drawing too much attention to themselves. -- Amazon

Harpist Al Miller’s blues timeline harks back nearly five decades. He’s had a frustrating habit of surfacing just long enough to cut loose with some succulent, stick-to-your-ribs traditional Chicago blues, only to recede into the shadows again for an extended stretch. The next time he pops up on the radar screen, he sounds just as fine as he ever did. This collection dates back to three sessions spread across 1999 and 2000 and was first released independently by Miller, who also served as its producer, but its appeal is timeless.

Miller was a proud member of the early wave of young white Windy City blues musicians. He gigged on the South Side with veteran mandolinist Johnny Young and Chicago Slim in 1964 before falling in with a crew of snarling blues-rockers, the Dirty Wurds who recorded on Chess Records. Emigrating to the Bay Area, he traded licks for a while with guitar wizard Michael Bloomfield around the end of the decade. Real life interrupted Al’s blues ambitions after that; he returned home to start a family and earn a weekly paycheck at a day job. But Miller never hung up his harp or his musical dreams altogether. In 1995, he released his first Delmark CD, Wild Cards (I had the pleasure of writing the liner notes for that one).

Miller exhibits excellent taste in covers on this album, reaching back for three numbers penned by his old friend Johnny Young as well as obscure gems by Jimmy McCracklin, Eddie Taylor, Percy Mayfield, and Elmore James. Though quite a capable singer, Miller brought in estimable guitarist John Primer to handle the vocal honors on B.B. King’s “I Need You So Bad,” Little Walter’s wry “Dead Presidents” (the only selection sporting a sax section), and Elmore James’ “1839,” adding to the fun and variety. There was room to lay down several rollicking instrumentals showcasing Miller’s mouth organ, Primer and Specter paid tribute to a long-gone (and too often-overlooked) Chicago guitar great on “Lawhorn Special.” Seems like it’s about time that Al Miller takes his spot among Chicago’s blues harp elite. ~Bill Dahl
