Andrew ‘Jr. Boy’ Jones is a Texan guitarist who cut his teeth with Charlie Musselwhite, Katie Webster and Freddie King amongst others before producing a series of eight solid solo albums on labels like JSP, Rounder and Electro-Fi. His latest release is on his own label and features his wife Kerrie Lepai Jones who released her own solo effort Organic Blues in 2017, also on Galex’C. In support here are Tim Tlee Waites on bass, Tommy ‘The Thrill’ Hill on drums, John Street on keys and Debra ‘Bo’ Bohannon on backing vocals. Andrew and Kerrie share the vocals and Andrew plays all the guitar parts. The music is all original, Andrew being the main writer with other band members contributing to four songs.

We start with Andrew and Kerrie inviting us to a “Blues Party” and it sounds like a fun time with Andrew’s Freddie King styled guitar leading the way with John’s warm organ work supporting the leisurely shuffle. “She Shed” sounds an odd title but all is rapidly explained by Andrew as he amusingly describes his girl setting up the equivalent of a man-cave at the bottom of the garden, Andrew becoming increasingly concerned that it may turn into a ‘love shack’ as he plays some excellent, restrained guitar in which you can hear every note clearly. Kerrie then leads the way on a song that warns girls of “Mr Slick” who may be “tall, dark and handsome” but is definitely a danger to the young ladies; that song definitely uses a classic blues theme and nothing is more classic than the excellent “Blues At Sunset”, a superb, late night instrumental, and one of the picks of the album for this reviewer – Andrew plays brilliantly and John’s piano solo is a bonus. Andrew is a little self-deprecating when he describes himself as an “Old Joker”, a fine shuffle with more great guitar work. Kerrie takes center stage on a soulful ballad as her character asks her unfaithful partner “Do You Ever Think About Me?”.

A second instrumental “Just Us” is the four instrumentalists playing a very lyrical piece before Andrew ups the pace with the funky “Road Doggin’”, a tale of how a working band operates. The couple celebrate their love together with “Good Life”, Andrew giving us some nice BB King licks on this rather sentimental number. “Sunday Drive” is an instrumental with a relaxed, slightly latin, vibe and Kerrie sings very well on “Blame It On Me”, another number with a similar musical feel and heartfelt lyrics about keeping love going. The album closes strongly with the upbeat “Don’t Mess With Me” as Andrew overdubs some fine lead guitar over his rhythm work behind Kerrie’s strong vocal.

There is not a weak track on this very enjoyable album – no overlong solos or showboating, good songs and fine vocals – this is a modern blues album with touches of soul, so ticks a lot of boxes. ~John Mitchell

A compilation of music by six relatively unknown Dallas-based blues guitarist singers. Recorded in 1997, the current CD was released in 2010 and includes bonus tracks omitted from the initial release. The total time of the 15-track CD is 69+ minutes. The main appeal of the CD is the chance to hear six guitarist / singers that you probably have not otherwise heard. Indeed, most of these artists were only known locally in the DFW area and toiled for years there in the bars and clubs. But do not let the relative obscurity of the artists deter you from checking out this CD; the quality of the performances is pretty good.

10. What's Goin' On (6:02)

A deep, youthful and fun-loving attitude pervades the music of Andrew "Jr. Boy" Jones and his Texas-based blues. Tacked on to his spare guitar work and easygoing vocal style, Jones makes music all his own, allowing space for two instrumentals, one a pleasant version of Marvin Gaye's "What's Goin' On?." With his locally based band featuring harmonica player Cheryl Arena and keyboardist John Street, Jr., Jones plays a variety of contemporary blues songs rooted in tradition, and sounds like he's lived life beyond his years. Like Ray LaMontagne's "Trouble," "Struggle" sounds like a perfect anthem for tough times in a funky, choogling Southern pace. "Just Playin' the Blues" comes close to a signature tune in a lighter, honest mood, while the slow, low-down "Hell in My House" is so personalized, it could easily become a classic. Jones also digs the 12-bar style as heard on the worn-out blues of "Negative Talkin'," or "Lonely Times." Sans vocals, "Don't Let the Green Grass Fool You" is a swing/shuffle with the instruments telling this cautionary tale, but "Don't Get It Twisted" offers another stern vocal warning in the more standard urban sense, with Street's burning organ emphasizing the point. This is a promising artist and album, proving that roadhouse blues is far from dead, and has new blood to keep the spirits singing. ~by Michael G. Nastos

Andrew "Jr. Boy" Jones is a veteran blues bandleader who's put in time with some of the best, including Jimmy McCracklin, Freddie King, Johnnie Taylor, and Katie Webster. You'll notice that list has a strong southwestern bias, and so does the music on Jones's solo debut, I Need Time (Bullseye Blues): his string-bending leads, obviously derived from B.B. King's, have a mellifluous elegance that recalls Texas trailblazers like T-Bone Walker, and his knack for imbuing even the most raucous flag-wavers with melodic subtlety and emotional depth reflects a long-standing Lone Star roadhouse tradition. Jones can pattern both his leads and his riffs after horn lines,

Andrew ‘Jr. Boy’ Jones was raised in Dallas, Texas, by his mother Gladys, who was a single parent after divorcing her husband when Andrew was very young. The singer for a big band, Gladys retired to raise her family, and the band’s leader, Adolphus Sneed, stayed with the family as a father figure. Andrew received his first guitar from his mother for his seventh birthday, and he practiced every day. After noticing Andrew’s talent, Sneed bought him his second guitar. Andrew has amassed more than 50 years of experience as a professional guitar player. ‘Jr. Boy’ was in his first professional group, the Thunderbirds, backing Freddie ‘The Texas Cannonball’ King by age 16. In the ’60s, ‘70s, and ‘80s, ‘Jr. Boy’ toured the world with several music legends, such as Johnnie Taylor, Tony Coleman, Cornell Dupree, Little Frankie Lee, Bobby Patterson, Russell Jackson, B.B. King, Katie Webster, and Charlie Musselwhite, to name a few.

In 1996, Andrew began his solo career and also released the ¬first album in which he was featured as a vocalist as well as a guitar player. He has since released fi¬ve more solo albums, one of which he released from his own label, GalexC Records and his only live album on 43rd Big Idea Records. ‘Jr. Boy’ has been touring extensively with his blues band all over the country for the past two years, performing at several venues in and around the Dallas area. Andrew and his band have also performed at large festivals, such as the Texas Blues Radio Annual KNON Blues Festival, and international events like the Ottawa Blues Festival.

If you haven't yet heard of Andrew "Jr Boy" Jones, you might just be listening to too much rap and not nearly enough blues. "I Know What It's Like" is his sixth release and during his 50 years in the business he's been the lead guitarist for many other musicians as well. As a matter of fact, during his stint with Charles Musselwhite, the band won a Blues Music Award in the "Band Of The Year" category. What I'm wondering is why haven't I heard the name Andrew "Jr Boy" Jones.....on a hell of a lot more blues festivals’ lineups?

Along with Andrew on guitar and vocals, the musicians appearing on "I Know What It's Like" are: Kerrie Lepai on vocals; Lewis Fluellen, Jr on keyboards; Chris Gipson and Christole on bass; Larry Clemon, Jr and Jamil Byrom on drums; Cheryl Arena on harmonica; Larry Clement on trumpet; and Ron Jones on sax. The CD consists of all original music - of which eleven of the tracks were penned by Andrew and the other two by Kerrie - that cover all styles of blues. ~Peter "Blewzzman" Lauro
