Mark “Fatt Max” Hill was born in London, England in 1967. He grew up listening to his parents’ collection of jazz, blues and Rat Pack music, but was always drawn to the blues. He was self-taught to play the guitar – “just listening and learning”. By age 9, he was picking up riffs and tunes from the radio or the family collection. At age 11 he joined his first band which performed a mix of original tunes with covers of blues and Beatles songs. He continued in bands playing in different genres through his teen years and into his 20’s, but the blues was always foremost in his mind. The latter period found him performing in acts throughout UK.

Things changed in 1996 when he got married. His wife was born in New Zealand, and in 1998 they moved to Auckland, New Zealand. Now in a new country with no knowledge of other musicians, he decided to continue his career as a solo musician. He eventually discovered the Auckland Blues Music Club and found a bunch of like-minded people, all dedicated to the blues. He started playing gigs in clubs and festivals all across the country and is looking forward to playing at the 40th Anniversary of the Bay of Islands Jazz and Blues Festival. He continues to play solo but also plays in a band called The Dirty Tones.

Mark builds his own guitars out of scrap materials like cigar boxes and hub caps. In addition to the guitar, he also plays bass, ukulele, banjo, mandolin, keyboards, harmonica and 3-string slide guitar. He does all of his own production, engineering and songwriting in his home studio and he has a regular podcast called Blues Diabolique on the RFS Network. Although now disbanded, he was the founder and president of the Fat Bikers Motorcycle Club which had over 300 members in New Zealand, many of whom were like-minded about the love of blues music. In fact, he notes that blues is still strong in New Zealand with many young people getting involved. “We love our blues down under”.

The Recliner Rockers are a roots/rockabilly/blues band from Auckland, New Zealand featuring Al Lavis on guitar and vocals, Geoff Fitzpatrick on upright and electric bass, Julian Davis on drums and Bruce French on saxophone. The Recliner Rockers history begins in 2005 when Al and Geoff were playing together in a covers band and started talking about their love of rockabilly, blues and other roots music.

Putting on a colourful, energetic show just came naturally with Al's seriously dynamic guitar playing and Geoff's crazy spinning double bass acrobatics. Along with Julian's flamboyant drumming and Bruce's smooth sax style, their flare for showmanship truly matches their musical prowess.

The Flaming Mudcats are a rip snortin', fire breathin' outfit that puts heart and soul into every note they play. Often gritty, sometimes raw, they hold nothing back and play rhythm & blues like they had no choice in the matter. In late 2011 the band just up and played live in the studio, cutting loose on a repertoire comprising of mostly original material, hoping to capture their live gig sound. Their debut album Gave You What You Wanted is the end result which has been critically acclaimed both in New Zealand and the USA.

Gave You What You Wanted seems an obvious title for the album; not only is it the name of a blazing Ike Turner song that the band particularly enjoys firing out at gigs, but it is also the band’s long overdue response to fans clamouring “Got any CDs?”

Grant is a down to earth guy. When we put together the pieces of his biography he said, "Nah man, this is all crap. I'm just a guy with his guitar. You have to tell the story without going four ways. " So we thought, who could better tell his story than Grant himself? Through his music. Some 40+ years ago David Coverdale sang the immortal words, “I love the blues, They tell my story, If you don’t feel it you can never understand” and they are as true today as they ever were. If you get the blues, really get the blues, there is nothing else like it and although I love the electric works of Lightnin’ Hopkins, T-Bone Walker and Muddy Waters, there is something about the pre-war acoustic blues which hold a special place, people like Blind Lemon Jefferson, Blind Blake, Lead Belly and so many others. Just a person with an acoustic guitar (mostly male but check out Elizabeth Cotton if you have never heard her), a microphone, and a heart full of pain.

This is a collection of songs that I've written and recorded over the last 15 years, some were recorded as a soloist, some in a band situation. It’s funny when you look back and think man I should of, would of, could of, done that better and sometimes you just hear a track and say to yourself, actually that's pretty good. So I was really excited to be given the opportunity to rework some of my old tunes with the blessing of my label the good folks at Dixiefrog.

The sound in the room was really good which is half the battle, but what makes this album shine is the people involved. I gathered the best team that I knew of and was fortunate enough that they were available. The musicians are all great people and players that I've been lucky enough to play with over the years. People I respect, people that bring joy and a ton of soul to the songs. It was a joyful experience making this album. Evan who recorded the session is a pleasure to work with and handled the often challenging situation of a live recording with a deft touch like the seasoned pro he is. Tims' mixing and mastering of the audio is nothing short of amazing. I've never had this much fun recording an album, hope you have as much fun listening to it.

Kokomo is a long-standing Kiwi blues & roots group, based in New Zealand's sunny Bay of Plenty.

Oscar LaDell is an American-born, Dunedin-based blues singer, songwriter, guitarist, and harmonica player. Chris Armour is a guitarist and producer from Wellington. Right Kinda Wrong finds the two collaborating for the first time. The album sweats ‘50s and ‘60s blues, inspired by the masters–Willie Dixon, Jimmy Reed, Little Walter, and Freddie King. It is made up of nine short, punchy original songs penned by both LaDell and Armour. Recording took place over two days at The Stolen Cabasa in Wellington, aided by engineer Miklin Halstead.

As well as Oscar LaDell and Chris Armour on their respective instruments, Right Kinda Wrong features Steve Moodie on bass and Richard Te One on drums, while Michael Crawford and Dayle Jellyman share keyboard duties. Armour also produced and mixed the album, capturing the vintage sound that instantly brings to mind classic Chess and Excello records. LaDell, at only 22, sings and plays with an authority beyond his years, absorbing the sound and tradition from his father, Leo LaDell - the Virginia-born musician who has shared the stage with both Bo Diddley and Pinetop Perkins. Right Kinda Wrong is a testament to the fact that, in New Zealand, the blues is in the right kinda hands.

Presumably, the title of singer/guitarist Chris Cain's new CD, King of the Blues, refers not to Cain himself but to one of his idols, the legendary bluesman B.B. King, who passed away in May 2015. Cain, who was born and raised in San Jose, CA, attended his first B.B. King concert at age three, and among the album's nine tracks are a pair written by King, "Whole Lotta Lovin'" and "So Excited." Cain composed four others to complement down-home themes by Nina Simone ("Girl from Joe's"), Carole King/Gerry Goffin ("Heartbreaker") and pianist Alan Broadbent ("Sidewalk Stanley," written for the Woody Herman band when Broadbent was a member).

King of the Blues was recorded in New Zealand, and Cain is backed by that country's premier jazz ensemble, the Rodger Fox Big Band. Unusual for a blues session, perhaps, but the combination works rather well. Although the band is intensely involved, it keeps its distance when Cain commands the spotlight. Cain has a strong, steady voice, sings on key, has a well-honed flair and conspicuous fondness for the blues, and, like King, plays a mean guitar. He also writes well, and his quartet of songs ("Helping Hand," "A Year Ago Today," "Peeties Theme," "Bossa for Josie") are among the album's highlights.

"Peeties Theme" and "Bossa for Josie" are instrumentals, with trombonist Fox and trumpeter Ben Hunt soloing crisply on "Peeties," pianist Anita Schwabe on "Josie." Tenor saxophonist Mike Isaacs adds a solo on "Whole Lotta Lovin,'" while Erna Ferry plays blues harp and Bryn van Vliet solos on alto sax on "So Excited." Cain's raunchy guitar is front and center on "Stanley," which was arranged by Broadbent; New Zealander Daniel Hayles scored everything else. Musically speaking, the album is first-rate; as for its blues quotient, that's harder to reckon, as this reviewer is far from well-versed in that genre. Those who are familiar with Cain's work should know roughly what to expect; those who aren't should check him out.

(NOTE: There are some glitches/cuts on some of the tracks of this album. Unfortunately this is the only copy I have been able to find, so there's nothing I can do about it unless I can find a better copy. Have however decided to keep the post for now and hope that you can enjoy the album despite them glitches. Sorry about that folks!)

The Rodger Fox Big Band played at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1980 and 1981. Both main performances were recorded and released on album in New Zealand. In the years since, from Montreux to Monterey, Fox’s big bands have played most of the world’s top jazz festivals. Now a lecturer at the New Zealand School Of Music, Rodger Fox received an honorary doctorate of music from Massey University in 2005, two years after he was made an officer of the New Zealand Order Of Merit. Rodger Fox has received no fewer than six jazz gongs at the NZ Music Awards.

Keith Douglas "Midge" Marsden was born and brought up in Moturoa, New Plymouth, Taranaki, the son of Les and Elaine Marsden. His musical education started on the piano and included singing in church, though his first musical love was rock and roll. As a teenager, he took guitar lessons from a New Plymouth musician called Leo Davies, who also owned a recording studio in the town, and went on to further lessons with another musician, Johnny Williams. Marsden's career spans four decades, and during that time he has played thousands of concerts in New Zealand and introduced several generations of New Zealanders to the blues. He was voted New Zealand Entertainer of the Year in 1990, and his 1991 album Burning Rain later went gold.

Marsden has toured the USA four times, and each time he has played with and befriended artists such as Little Willy Foster, Bobby Mack, Ronnie Taylor, and Australian Dave Boyle. He has encouraged all these artists to tour New Zealand, and thus broadened New Zealanders' appreciation of blues music. Marsden was a student at the University of Mississippi in 1996, from where he graduated with a Diploma in Southern Studies, and more recently he has tutored at Waikato Institute of Technology in "Bluesology". The Rodger Fox Big Band played at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1980 and 1981. Both main performances were recorded and released on album in New Zealand. In the years since, from Montreux to Monterey, Fox’s big bands have played most of the world’s top jazz festivals. Now a lecturer at the New Zealand School Of Music, Rodger Fox received an honorary doctorate of music from Massey University in 2005, two years after he was made an officer of the New Zealand Order Of Merit. Rodger Fox has received no fewer than six jazz gongs at the NZ Music Awards.

The Underdogs' "Blues Band and Beyond" compiles all the material the band ever recorded for Zodiac: their Blues Band LP, Sitting in the Rain EP and 45's featuring the Genius Guitar Playing of Harvey Mann, whose only rivals in the guitar god stakes back in New Zealand were Billy T.K. (Human Instinct) and Neil Edwards (who later joined H.I.). Think anywhere from hard-driving blues to The Music Machine if you are one of the uninitiated. The group was originally started in 1964 by blues fanatic Archie Bowie and guitarist Harvey Mann, both from Mt Maunganui but based in Auckland. They were a hard-core blues band playing mainly traditional American negro blues, which was a brave move in Beatles-obsessed New Zealand. This early incarnation of The Underdogs was the band without an audience. They had to wait for the prevailing British rhythm and blues explosion to gain an audience in New Zealand, and in The Underdogs eyes, save us all from a world of continuous yeah yeah yeahs.

The British R&B invasion spearheaded by the likes of The Yardbirds, John Mayall and The Rolling Stones took hold and The Underdogs Blues Band soon flourished, as New Zealand quickly became a stronghold of the British style of R&B. The Underdogs were a tight musical unit and soon found themselves playing in some of the inner city dances and clubs. Musical divisions within the group started to surface over musical direction, which resulted in group leader and guitarist Harvey Mann taking drastic steps to ensure that his band all travelled in the same direction together. Harvey asked Murray Grindlay if he would like to join The Underdogs as he had just fired Mick Sibley, their singer, who had taken over from Archie Bowie. Drummer Ian Thomson stayed a while then left in protest while rhythm guitarist Tony Rawnsley found himself being replaced by his brother Lou. Thomson later moved to The Brew.

After the dust had settled, there emerged a new Underdogs incarnation that would become the most enduring and best known line-up, with original members Harvey Mann (guitar) and Neil Edwards (bass) now joined by Murray Grindlay (vocals), Lou Rawnsley (rhythm guitar) and Tony Walton (drums). Without missing a beat and using the recently released John Mayall and Eric Clapton Bluesbreakers album as their blueprint the new Underdogs settled in to a Galaxie residency late in 1966 where they played alongside The La De Da’s, The Action and The Pleazers. Eldred Stebbing signed The Underdogs to his Zodiac label. The first single ‘See Saw’/‘Looking Back’ was released in early 1967, with the A-side, ‘See Saw’ showing a slight shift in direction from their blues roots into a more soulful direction. As Murray Grindlay explains, “we started [recording] closer to what The La De Da's were playing, which was a mixture of soul and British R&B, which was a lot more commercial than the hard core blues that that the previous Underdogs line-up had played.” Later in the year the single would be chosen as a finalist in the 1967 Loxene Golden Disc Awards.

Shortly after the release of ‘Sitting In The Rain’, group leader Harvey Mann left the group, also to join The Brew (with Ian Thomson). Miffed that Harvey had left, the remaining members decided not to replace him, to show that they didn't really need him and carried on as a four-piece. Late in 1967 work started on their debut album, which included a cover of the Donovan song ‘Hey Gyp’ that became their next single and included possibly New Zealand’s first drum tape loop. Edwards left after being kicked out halfway through the album recording sessions, as the group’s musical direction started to change yet again. Dave Orams joined the group on bass. The group relocated to Wellington for a short period before returning to Auckland at year’s end. Early in 1968 Orams left to join Wellington group, Quincy Conserve and was replaced by George Barris.

Shortly afterwards the group broke up. Tony Walton went on to join a new group Jigsaw that included as their lead singer, Glyn Mason who by year's end would leave Jigsaw to take over from Larry Morris in The Rebels. Chaz Burke Kennedy and George Barris were also members of Jigsaw. Meanwhile Murray Grindlay and Harvey Mann joined The Australasian Blues Champions who rehearsed but never really got off the ground. After little more than a month Murray and Harvey reformed the Underdogs in April 1968. Filling out this line-up was Lou Rawnsley and Doug Thomas on drums. This line-up of the Underdogs managed to stay together for the rest of 1968. In early 1969 they released the single ‘There Will Come A Time’/‘Fine Jung Thing’. Lou Rawnsley left after the single’s release and was replaced by Chaz Burke-Kennedy from Jigsaw, but by late 1969 the group had disbanded again. Harvey Mann and Neil Edwards got together with Glen Absolum on drums in 1970 and yet again reformed the group. They released the 1971 Bob Gillett-produced album Wasting Our Time as Pig, Mann and Edwards for Pye Records before finally breaking up for good. In 2000 Ascension Records released the CD Blues Band and Beyond, which includes their entire Zodiac output, including their album, EP and singles. /New Zealand Music
