Covering the Peter Green title track may be a subliminal (or subconscious) way of reminding listeners of his early-’90s stint with Fleetwood Mac, but Vito was a Green devotee well before Green had vacated the band 20 years prior, let alone before joining the group himself. And that was just one stop on a road that’s also seen the guitarist popping up with Bob Seger, Roger McGuinn, Bonnie Raitt, Maria Muldaur, Jackson Browne, Glenn Frey, and the blues vanguard Green apprenticed with before forming Mac, John Mayall.

As the list above suggests, Vito can adapt to a multitude of situations, but here he and his Lucky Devils don’t stray far from roadhouse blues – the tone set by the opening Elmore James-inspired “My Baby’s Hot.” As evidenced by his original “The Lucky Devil,” Magic Sam is another of Rick’s heroes; he’s put words to Sam’s boogie instrumental “Lookin’ Good” – no mean feat, since playing the thing is hard enough, forget about trying to sing at the same time.

He reverses the formula on “A Change Is Gonna Come,” a moving instrumental arrangement of Sam Cooke’s timeless classic, featuring Vito’s haunting slide. The CD includes two other instrumentals: the relaxed, self-explanatory “Slide The Blues” and another Mac cover, “Albatross.” Even transferring parts of the melody to slide, as with “Rattlesnake,” Vito stays close to the original – perhaps a bit too much, instead of injecting more of his own personality. /Dean Danielson, Vintage Guitar Magazine

Founding member of this band that, during the boom of rock in Spanish in the 80s, performed in practically all the forums of the rock scene of that time (Rockotitlán, Tuttifrutti, El 9, Rock Stock, El Alicia, etc.), at national festivals and university events.

He was the founder, songwriter, and leader of this blues band from 2000 to 2019. During this period, they became the resident group of the iconic Ruta 61 space in Mexico City, where they played for thirteen years.?

Octavio describes his style as "eclectic blues," where the aesthetics of blues, rock, and jazz interact constantly. Among his musical influences are artists as diverse as B.B. The Bihari Brothers launched Flair, their third subsidiary of Modern Records, in 1953 with the intention of releasing nothing but country music. As it turns out, they had no flair for hillbilly. Spooked by their immediate flops, they refashioned Flair as another blues and R&B imprint, signing Elmore James as their first artist, either not knowing or caring that he was still signed to Trumpet at the time. As he waited for his Trumpet contract to expire, James and his band functioned as a bit of a house band for Flair, backing Little Johnny Jones on "Dirty by the Dozen (Sweet Little Woman)," and, appropriately enough, Elmore James was the flagship artist for the label, releasing 11 singles between 1953-1955, which is roughly an eighth of the 45s Flair released in its short time.

Seven of these songs anchor Ace's 2014 compilation Dust My Rhythm & Blues: The Flair Records R&B Story 1953-1955 but the intent is not to showcase Elmore, even though he is the labels' best-known artist and his Flair sides are among his finest recordings. Often using alternate takes that sound as potent as the released sides, this showcases the entirety of the label and, as such, there's a lot more rhythm & blues than there is straight-up blues, with Richard Berry - the songwriter of "Louie Louie" - responsible for a fair chunk of it. He wrote and recorded, both on his own as part of the Ricky & Jennell duo and as part of the vocal group the Dreamers, he ran sessions and helped push a swinging modern sensibility that stands in contrast to the jump blues of Big Duke.

Elsewhere, the Bihari Brothers Modern mainstay Ike Turner can be heard - both on his own and as the driving force behind Matt Cockrell and Billy Gale - and his grittiness works well alongside James. Usually, Flair didn't play too smooth - Saunders King was an exception - but they never quite got as down and dirty as Chess or Sun, and that's the appeal: they're at a halfway point between jump blues and modern electric blues, an R&B label in the truest sense, and illustrating this clear distinction is why this collection is so valuable. /Stephen Thomas Erlewine, AllMusic

The great veteran pianist Jay McShann (also known as Hootie) enjoyed a long career and it is unfair to primarily think of him as merely the leader of an orchestra that featured a young Charlie Parker. He was mostly self-taught as a pianist, worked with Don Byas as early as 1931 and played throughout the Midwest before settling in Kansas City in 1936. McShann formed his own sextet the following year and by 1939 had his own big band.

In 1940 at a radio station in Wichita, KS, McShann and an octet out of his orchestra recorded eight songs that were not released commercially until the 1970s; those rank among the earliest of all Charlie Parker records (he is brilliant on "Honeysuckle Rose" and "Lady Be Good") and also feature the strong rhythm section team McShann had with bassist Gene Ramey and drummer Gus Johnson. The full orchestra recorded for Decca on two occasions during 1941-1942 but they were typecast as a blues band and did not get to record many of their more challenging charts (although very rare broadcasts have since surfaced and been released on CD by Vintage Jazz Classics). In addition to Bird (who had a few short solos), the main stars were trumpeter Bernard Anderson, the rhythm section, and singer Walter Brown.

McShann and his band arrived in New York in February 1942 and made a strong impression, but World War II made it difficult for any new orchestras to catch on. There was a final session in December 1943 without Parker, but McShann was soon drafted and the band broke up. After being discharged later in 1944, McShann briefly re-formed his group but soon moved to Los Angeles, where he led combos for the next few years; his main attraction was the young singer Jimmy Witherspoon. McShann was in obscurity for the next two decades, making few records and mostly playing in Kansas City.

In 1969 he was rediscovered and McShann (who had first sung on records in 1966) was soon a popular pianist/vocalist. Sometimes featuring violinist Claude Williams, he toured constantly, recorded frequently, and appeared at many jazz festivals, being active into the mid-'90s. Jay McShann, who recorded through the years for Onyx (the 1940 radio transcriptions), Decca, Capitol, Aladdin, Mercury, Black Lion, EmArcy, Vee Jay, Black & Blue, Master Jazz, Sackville, Sonet, Storyville, Atlantic, Swingtime, and Music Masters among others, was a vital pianist and an effective blues vocalist who keept a classic style alive. A live album, Hootie Blues, recorded in 2001 in Toronto and released in 2006 by Stony Plain, showed that McShann could still bring it at the age of 85. He died at the age of 90 on December 7, 2006. /Biography by Scott Yanow, AllMusic

Her catalog spans jazz standards, blues, country, rock, and modern electronic influences - reflecting a lifelong evolution shaped by both tradition and independent creation. She began in musical theater and jazz, later pursued country music in the ’90s, performed in rock bands in the 2000s, and eventually expanded into self-produced songwriting that explored electro-pop and electro-rock. After years of musical exploration, Stapler’s current work marks a focused return to blues-centered songwriting, where vintage influence meets a modern independent voice.

A wave of attention followed. Today, however, Amacher is back where he truly belongs: with an electric guitar in his hand and a killer band behind him. Even during his time on The Voice, the mid-thirties musician knew he wanted to leave the glitz and glam of pop stardom behind. He wanted to create an earthy, raw album that reflected his musical preferences and authentic character. Roadhouse is that album.

With Roadhouse, he has lived up to his very high standards – including those he sets for himself. The rising star of blues-rock holds nothing back and delivers an album that convincingly conveys the pure power of the blues.

Reviews

"Rather, he relies on a powerful blend of various blues and boogie styles with rock, raw and decidedly edgy, recorded live in the studio without any subsequent overdubs for polish." (...) This down-to-earth Swiss musician has something special – his career is one to watch.

Johnny Vincent founded Ace Records in 1955 after being laid off from his job as an A&R man at Specialty Records - he had also founded Champion Records earlier in the decade - and although he based his operations in Jackson, Mississippi, he was also very much in tune with the New Orleans R&B and blues scene, signing and releasing singles by several Crescent City artists, including Huey "Piano" Smith & the Clowns ("Rockin' Pneumonia and the Boogie Woogie Flu"), Frankie Ford ("Sea Cruise"), and Jimmy Clanton ("Venus in Blue Jeans").

But Vincent had several Mississippi blues artists on his roster, too, including Arthur Crudup, Sam Myers, King Edward, Pat Brown, and Willie Clayton, among others, and Ace became one of Mississippi's most successful labels in the '50s and '60s. This two-disc, 36-track set collects some of these rare blues cuts, including ten sides that are making their first appearance on CD. /Steve Leggett, AllMusic

Mike Zito returns to his roots on Outside Or The Eastside, a deeply personal new album shaped by memory, place, and renewal. Recorded in the spirit of his hometown St. Louis, the record reflects on second chances, hard lessons, and the joy of reclaimed life. A personal record for Mike shaped by memory, places, and renewal. Walking the streets of his birthplace, St. Louis, Zito reconnects with the sounds, stories, and hard lessons that forged his signature blend of soul-driven blues and fearless storytelling. Thirteen years after Gone to Texas, this album feels like a defining moment, marking a new chapter for Mike, his family, and a life reclaimed in the city that started it all.

The songs paint vivid snapshots of city life and personal reckoning, from late-night regret and self-awareness to raw portraits of neighbourhood survival and street-level truth. Tracks like “Downtown at Midnight” and “Grand Avenue” capture the grit, temptation, and consequences of the past with unflinching honesty, grounding the album in lived experience and emotional weight . Zito’s writing is direct and cinematic, pairing tough reflection with compassion and hard-earned wisdom.

At its heart, Outside Or The Eastside is a celebration of second chances, an album dedicated to better days, family, friendship, love, and joy found in everyday moments. Life’s unpredictable paths open doors you never expect, and for Mike Zito, this record embraces that truth with warmth, humour, and swagger. It’s a record about choosing connection over chaos and moving forward with gratitude, purpose, and the volume turned up. /The Blues Magazine

Octave Lissner was born in Paris on June 30, 1993 to a musical family. At twenty-three, following the success of his debut EP featuring the single ‘Silver Rain’ (2014), with over 24,000 listens on SoundCloud, he is preparing the release of his first album: Wildflower. Recorded in Serbia with some of the country’s best session musicians, the album exhibits Octave’s mournful, soulful, hard-grooving blues rock at full force. It might make you feel like you’re in an open-top car, one careless arm draped out the window over the hot metal, with someone beautiful in the passenger seat.

Octave’s music takes particular influence from musicians like Otis Redding, The Rolling Stones, Marvin Gaye, Neil Young, Burt Bacharach and Paul Simon. But his musical attractions range widely and are diverse, including the more contemporary—Radiohead and Kings of Leon— It’s not surprising that he draws on such a wide range of artistry; he started learning the violin at age six and the guitar at eight; and at eleven he discovered he could sing. Forming a band in which he co-wrote songs with his friends, none of the precocious and embarrassed boys were comfortable putting themselves forward as lead singer. Taking turns at the microphone to see who could sing best, Octave found he had a voice.

Since then it has continued to serve him well, and Octave has composed and performed music in a number of bands, and as a solo artist in venues across London and Paris. In October 2014 he opened for Mr Big at the legendary venue Koko in Camden, London, and in Paris he has played solo concerts at Bus Palladium, Le China Club, La Favela Chic, Le Perchoir and Pile ou Face, to name but a few. Earlier this year at Le Baiser Salé, one of Paris’ most celebrated jazz clubs, he gave weekly performances in a one-month residency for a tribute to jazz guitarist John Scofield.

In April 2016 Octave won a prize for best composition in ‘The Best Musical Mind’: an international competition held in Belgrade. This allowed him to attend a Summer program offered by the Berklee School of Music in Perugia, Italy. A restless composer, Octave has written music for web series (www.mylifeinsourdough.com) and film soundtracks; his song 'Little Mary' featured in Valley of Love (starring Gerard Depardieu and Isabelle Huppert, directed by Guillaume Nicloux), part of the official selection during the 2015 Cannes film festival. He currently lives between Paris and London, where he spends his time composing and drinking chocolate milk.

11. Alice Mae (4:13)

This year, Belgium’s alternative blues rockers Boogie Beasts turn 15 - and they’re celebrating in style. The timing is perfect: it also marks 100 years since the birth of R.L. Burnside, one of the band’s greatest inspirations and a true legend of North Mississippi Hill Country blues. To honour both milestones, the band is releasing a brand-new collaborative album - a tribute to R.L. Burnside. Don’t Be So Mean! goes beyond a tribute. It’s a unique collaboration bringing together artists from both sides of the Atlantic who share a deep love for Burnside and Hill Country blues.

The album features three Mississippi musicians who once shared the stage with Burnside. His son, Duwayne Burnside, lends vocals to two tracks. Longtime guitarist Kenny Brown - Burnside’s right-hand man - also appears on two songs. Luther Dickinson (North Mississippi Allstars, ex–The Black Crowes) adds his signature slide guitar. From Philadelphia, G. Love brings a smooth hip-hop twist to “Shake ’Em On Down.” On the European side, Boogie Beasts are joined by Pablo van de Poel of Dutch psychedelic rock trio DeWolff, and Belgian garage rocker Cedric Maes (The Sore Losers, The Sha-La-Lees), each adding their own distinctive energy.

With Don’t Be So Mean!, Boogie Beasts return to the roots of their sound - gritty grooves, hypnotic riffs, and the untamed spirit of Hill Country blues — while staying true to their wild and uncompromising style. One of the most iconic tracks by R.L. Burnside, built around that hypnotic, repetitive riff. We’ve added a driving dance groove underneath as a nod to his remix albums. When Pablo van de Poel, singer and guitarist of the Dutch trio DeWolff, first heard the base track, his immediate reaction was: “Delta disco!”

Jan and Gert have known Pablo for years, going back to when their former band played several shows supporting DeWolff in the Netherlands. While DeWolff isn’t typically associated with hill country blues, Pablo clearly has an ear for it, and a few records by R.L. Burnside sitting in his collection. He didn’t hesitate for a second when asked to join this tribute. He contributes backing vocals (falsetto) and a great guitar part, adding an extra layer that gives the track a distinct psychedelic feel. /Bluestown Music

Personnel: Jan Jaspers (guitar, vocals); Patrick Louis (guitar, vocals); Gert Servaes (drums); Fabian Bennardo (harmonica).

There is no substitute for experience – and after 30 years on stage, Roger C. Wade & The Houserockers have nothing left to prove, but plenty to give. Their new album Shake It Loose! celebrates a rare anniversary: three decades of groove, sweat, and tireless blues passion.

From the first notes of “On My Mind” to the relaxed finale of “Late Night Swing,” this album offers exactly the energy and joy of playing that only a well-rehearsed band with real stage experience can deliver. Between robust original compositions and carefully selected covers, jump blues, classic R&B, and piano grooves à la New Orleans are mixed together - with Roger's distinctive vocals and harp playing always at the center.

The regular line-up – Roger C. Wade (vocals, harp), Marion Wade (piano), T-Man Michalke (guitar), Stephan “Roffi” Roffmann (double bass) and Micha Maass (drums) – is joined by top-class guests such as saxophone legends Sax Gordon and Tommy Schneller. Jaska Prepula adds extra depth with his electric bass on three tracks. Shake It Loose! was recorded and mixed with great attention to detail – in the spirit of the old school.

It's more than just an album: it's a celebration pressed onto vinyl. A tribute to the past, but with an eye to the future. And above all, proof of why this band has held its own for 30 years: strong songs, deep feeling, and an unbroken joy in making music.

Born in Angola in 1957, Nuno Mindelis was building and playing guitars by the time he was nine years old. Nuno's family lost everything in the Angolan Civil War, and he was forced to flee his home at age 17. After a year of separation, he was reunited with his family in Brazil and continued to pursue his music.

Nuno's early work, including the albums Blues & Derivados, and Long Distance Blues, received very positive reviews in Brazilian National media. "Guitar Player Magazine" profiled Nuno in an issue, with editor Jas Obrecht comparing Nuno to Jimmy Page ("think Jimmy Page 'I Can't Quit You Baby'"). Further recognition came in the 30th Anniversary Guitar Player Magazine Competition, where Nuno was named "Best Blues Guitarist". Nuno subsequently recorded "Texas Bound", featuring Tommy Shannon & Chris Layton, Stevie Ray Vaughan's famed rhythm section, "Double Trouble." "Texas Bound" came to be the top seller in Benelux (Belgium, Netherlands and Luxembourg) and brought worldwide recognition.

Nuno followed with another album featuring Double Trouble, entitled "Blues on the Outside." After his first appearance at the Montreal International Jazz Festival in 2001, Nuno was named by critics as the "best blues guitar" player of the Festival that year.

After the release of his album "Twelve Hours," which featured more original Blues tunes, Nuno released an album, "Outros Nunos", specially dedicated to Brazil. All the songs were recorded entirely in Portuguese and treated listeners to a fusion of other musical elements, including rap, hip hop and samba). The album received laudatory reviews and was considered one of the year's best albums in Brazil. In 2010, Nuno released "Free Blues.' Carol Borrington of Blues Matters Magazine-UK wrote: "In this CD you will find some of the best blues guitaring around".

What is likely to happen when four A-list musical masterminds, with help from other elite musicians, come together to create a piece of artistic beauty? You receive a brilliant recording that is sure to satisfy even the most brutal critics. With that in mind, the way this recording was birthed is amazing in itself. Louisiana-born Marc Broussard’s brand new release, Chance Worth Taking (on KTBA Records), offers fourteen tracks of masterfully done music and is his first venture into creating a total blues project. With bandmates and writing partners like Joe Bonamassa, Josh Smith, Calvin Turner, Reese Wynans, and Trombone Shorty (not to mention some other really great support from others), you can see why this album is an almost sure bet for success.

You can also scratch your head about how it came to be. Calvin Turner sent Broussard fifteen instrumental tracks with the idea of creating a total blues album. Broussard then put lyrics to the tracks in three days, and the cuts were polished up in the studio with the others involved in the recording. In the end, Chance Worth Taking was created. Marc Broussard, already known for his soulful R&B-styled vocals, awards, and successes (along with twelve studio albums, three EPs, and one live album), may have very well found a new place to call home, considering his vocal performances on this album. /Moe Moore, Blues Rock Review

After more than two decades on the road, over 1,300 concerts, countless international tours, and a dozen awards attesting to their excellence, Travellin' Brothers has reaffirmed its position as one of the most solid and respected bands on the European scene. In 2023 and 2024, the band celebrated its 20th anniversary, and as a culmination of this milestone they are taking a bold and exciting step: the reactivation of their big band format, inactive for a decade, to present their eleventh studio album.

A career as long as that of Travellin' Brothers is built on an unusual and powerful fact: having maintained the same lineup since its founding. This cohesion and musical understanding is the driving force that allows them to tackle projects of the magnitude of a big band. The album stems from a desire to revive the spectacular nature of their big band formation. It's a work that reinterprets original songs previously recorded by the band, elevating them to a new dimension with arrangements created specifically for big band.

New this year are covers of songs that inspire the band, treated with the same care and with original arrangements that perfectly integrate them into their sound universe. The album "Back In Business" is a testament to the maturity and absolute mastery that Travellin' Brothers have over their sound. Leveraging this experience, the band opted for in-house production, recording the entire album at their own Hell Kitchen Studios, thus ensuring complete creative control over the final result.

Memphis Slim - All Kinds Of Blues

Album: All Kinds Of Blues
Size: 105,2 MB
Time: 45:30
File: MP3 @ 320K/s
Released: 1963/1990
Styles: Blues, piano blues
Art: Full

1. Blues Is Troubles (3:25)
2. Grinder Man Blues (4:36)
3. Three-In-One Boogie (4:28)
4. Letter Home (3:39)
5. Churnin' Man Blues (6:32)
6. Two Of A Kind (4:16)
7. The Blacks (5:10)
8. If You See Kay (4:29)
9. Frankie And Johnny Boogie (4:09)
10. Mother Earth (4:42)

This early-'60s date was the second - and one of the best - of Memphis Slim's many top-notch Bluesville recordings. Featuring Slim accompanying himself on the piano, All Kinds of Blues is a vintage set of mellow yet deep blues by one of the music's most urbane performers. Whether reveling in his considerable boogie-woogie chops ("Three-in-One-Boogie") or tossing off a wryly sexual romp ("Grinder Man Blues"), Slim always seems to be totally at ease and in command. And while newcomers are advised to start out with one of his early-'50s sets on Chess, this will be one collection no Memphis Slim fan will want to overlook. /Stephen Cook, AllMusic

Mark “Fatt Max” Hill was born in London, England in 1967. He grew up listening to his parents’ collection of jazz, blues and Rat Pack music, but was always drawn to the blues. He was self-taught to play the guitar – “just listening and learning”. By age 9, he was picking up riffs and tunes from the radio or the family collection. At age 11 he joined his first band which performed a mix of original tunes with covers of blues and Beatles songs. He continued in bands playing in different genres through his teen years and into his 20’s, but the blues was always foremost in his mind. The latter period found him performing in acts throughout UK.

Things changed in 1996 when he got married. His wife was born in New Zealand, and in 1998 they moved to Auckland, New Zealand. Now in a new country with no knowledge of other musicians, he decided to continue his career as a solo musician. He eventually discovered the Auckland Blues Music Club and found a bunch of like-minded people, all dedicated to the blues. He started playing gigs in clubs and festivals all across the country and is looking forward to playing at the 40th Anniversary of the Bay of Islands Jazz and Blues Festival. He continues to play solo but also plays in a band called The Dirty Tones.

Mark builds his own guitars out of scrap materials like cigar boxes and hub caps. In addition to the guitar, he also plays bass, ukulele, banjo, mandolin, keyboards, harmonica and 3-string slide guitar. He does all of his own production, engineering and songwriting in his home studio and he has a regular podcast called Blues Diabolique on the RFS Network. Although now disbanded, he was the founder and president of the Fat Bikers Motorcycle Club which had over 300 members in New Zealand, many of whom were like-minded about the love of blues music. In fact, he notes that blues is still strong in New Zealand with many young people getting involved. “We love our blues down under”.

Big Creek Slim is a bluesman as sure as the day is long. Don't believe it? Listen to that voice. Feel the passion and intensity he brings to the blues. Big Creek Slim's trademark is authentic pre-war country blues and early Chicago blues. Right now he is the hottest Scandinavian blues name and has received a rain of awards, and has wowed the blues crowds all over Europe.

He is supported by double bassist Rodrigo Mantovani, who creates a musical framework that frees Big Creek from the rhythmic constraints of a solo performance. A native of Brazil, Mantovani is an internationally recognized double bassist who, at the ripe old age of 38, has been playing professionally for more than 20 years. He is currently a member of the Nick Moss Band and lives in Chicago.

Each track highlights a different voice and style, with Corritore’s harmonica acting as the connective thread. His long-standing reputation for bringing out fresh, heartfelt performances from established blues singers shines throughout the album.

12. I Know I'm Fallin' (5:23)
13. The Monkey & The Man (3:22)

i was a bit concerned when the liner notes told me i wasn't going to hear any "dirty" amplified harp, exactly what i love, but you don't miss that with norton blowing. his playing is so fully nuanced and textured that a mic might even have distorted some of those wonderful tones. and while you won't find any lowdown swamp boogie here, or delta grinders, or led zep rockers, you will find plenty of smoky lounge crawlers and freeway accelerators with smoldering guitar if that's your taste. in fact norton is a master of styles and playing modes, sounding now like the harmonicats, then like larry adler, and all with a rocking, bluesy feel. he sings almost as well as he plays, too. anybody catch his playing in the movie "the dog pound shuffle" some years back, where norton does the harp work for a canadian drifter played by david soul? beautiful stuff.

Pat Coast is a Northwest native and a serious student of blues guitar. Though proficient in many genres, including rock and roots rock, R&B, funk, country and acoustic finger style guitar, Pat’s first love remains the blues, which he began learning at age 14 with some old T-Bone Walker and B.B. King records. Since 1992 Pat’s bands have ranged from a seven piece powerhouse band with very tasty horn arrangements down to a lean and mean power trio. Having released five CDs receiving air play on stations from Seattle to Kentucky and national publication reviews, Pat’s taken his act on the road as a favorite request for presenters in dozens of festivals and concerts throughout Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Montana.
