Robert Johnson, born May 8th, 1911 in Hazelhurst, Mississippi is one of the most influential American musicians of the 20th Century and considered by many to be the greatest bluesman to ever live. His influence extends well beyond the Mississippi Delta region where he spent most of his short life. He was noted during his lifetime for not simply playing Delta blues but for incorporating and mastering styles such as gospel, country, popular music, and urban blues into a new blues sound. His guitar playing was so masterful it gave rise to a myth that he sold his soul to the Devil at the crossroads. Unfortunately, his premature death at age 27 in 1938 left him nearly forgotten until Columbia Records reissued his recordings in 1961 and provided an inspiration for much of the rock & roll to follow. In fact, most of the great rock & roll legends of the 1960's were merely doing an electrified version of what Robert Johnson was doing 30 years earlier.
