When The Blues Band got together in 1979, they caused a sensation that astonished both the group and the record industry. Fans flocked to hear Paul Jones, Tom McGuinnes and friends playing R&B with all the enthusiasm inherited from their days together with Manfred Mann in the Sixties as Dave Kelly performed with the John Dummer Band, touring with and backing Howlin' Wolf, John Lee Hooker (two tours) and Son House. The Blues Band's hits include "Come On In", "Find Yourself Another Fool", "Nadine", "Who's Right Who's Wrong", "Come On In" and "Maggie's Farm", which reached number 22 in the UK charts.

For four decades, and over 20 albums later, The Blues Band has gone on to become acknowledged as being amongst the very finest purveyors of rhythm & blues. Repertoire Records is excited to announce the release of The Blues Band’s new, and final ever studio album – "So Long". Featuring vocals from Gary Fletcher, Paul Jones, Dave Kelly and Tom McGuinness along with performances from a host of famous faces on the blues scene, including boogie pianist Bob Hall (who also appeared on the band's debut album "The Official Bootleg"), Zoot Money, Albert Lee and Steve Simpson, "So Long" offers 16 must-listen tracks for blues fans.

Comprised of a mixture of original songs written by the band members such as "Tough Times", "Don't Let It Be You" and "Come On Give Me Some Blues" and covers of classic rock and blues songs like "To Love Somebody" (the Bee Gees penned song originally written for Otis Redding), and "Hard Times Killing Floor" (the Skip James song written in the 1930s), this album offers a fitting conclusion to the musical genius of a true Blues Band.

Revisiting the songbooks of Slim Harpo ( I'm Your King Bee ), Arthur Crudup ( Mean Old Frisco ), Doc Pomus ( Lonely Avenue ), Hoagy Carmichael ( Georgia On My Mind ), and Robert Johnson ( Crossroads Blues ), this is an essential selection of stone classics enlivened by the band's original numbers.

Now in their 40th year, the Blues Band was formed by Manfred Mann lead singer/harp player Paul Jones and fellow bandmate, guitarist Tom McGuinness. The original line-up included bassist Gary Fletcher, slide-guitarist Dave Kelly (who'd previously played with the John Dummer Band, Howlin Wolf and John Lee Hooker), and drummer Hughie Flint, of John Mayall's Blues Breakers and McGuinness Flint, the outfit he formed with Tom McGuinness. When Flint left in 1982, he was replaced by Family's Rob Townsend.

Acknowledged throughout Europe and beyond as one of the finest exponents of authentic rhythm & blues, the Blues Band continue to cut the mustard, writing and playing with passion and conviction to appreciative cross-generational audiences wherever they go.

12. I Cant Hold On Much Longer (5:11)
13. Boom Boom (4:26)
14. Treat Her Right (5:22)
15. Maggie's Farm (7:16)

All but one of the 15 songs were recorded in concert for the BBC on December 8, 1982 (the one remaining track, a cover of Bob Dylan's "Maggie's Farm," was recorded on March 23, 1981 for a separate BBC broadcast). The Blues Band were, in limited respects, a big deal in Britain in this era: a blues-rock group with integrity and pedigree that had a reputation as an excellent live act. On this record, it must be said, they come across more like an above-average blues-rock bar band, one that happens to feature a singer (Paul Jones) who's much, much better than the typical bloke you'll see fronting a bunch of geezers doing Chess covers at the local pub. Did it make for a good night out? Maybe. Does it make for enlightening listening? No, to be harsh. Even if they know their chops and are enjoying what they're doing, the repertoire is stuffed with unimaginative covers of chestnuts by Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon, Little Walter, and the like, as well as some originals quite derivative of same. It's stating the obvious, perhaps, but Jones (and fellow ex-Manfred Manner Tom McGuinness) are not exactly stretching their creative capacities here; even their blues covers in Manfred Mann were much more exciting. And there's no excuse for Dave Kelly taking the occasional lead vocal, so inferior is he to Jones. There are some bright spots here and there -- the Jones original "I Can't Hold on Much Longer" is a decent tough blues-soul ballad, and the cover of Roy Head's "Treat Her Right" pretty heated for an overplayed standard. Overall, though, it's only fair treadmill blues-rock (accent on the blues) that makes those of us who weren't in the appreciative crowds wonder what all the fuss was about. ~Richie Unterberger

The Blues Band - The Bootleg Album/Ready (2 CD Set)

The Blues Band is a virtual who's who of the British blues scene. An '80s supergroup of sorts, the band consists of Paul Jones, solo artist and former member of Manfred Mann (lead vocals and harmonica ); Dave Kelly, solo artist and former member of the John Dummer Blues band (lead vocals and slide guitar); Tom McGuinness, former member of Manfred Mann and McGuinness Flint (lead guitar and back-up vocals); Hughie Flint, also former McGuinness Flint (drums); and Gary Fletcher, formerly of Sam Apple Pie (bass and backup vocals).

Although formed in 1979, the band released its debut album, The Bootleg Album, in 1980 as supposedly a one-time live project. The album was originally a private pressing, recorded live and released by the band themselves, but it sold so well it was re-released intact by Arista after signing the band to a contract. The Blues Band became so popular that they got together as a permanent unit and recorded another album in 1980 called Ready.

This release is a part of BGO's reissue program of the Blues Band's original albums in the 2 on 1 CD series. This two-CD set has been remastered from original master tapes and features the original artwork of both albums and additional sleeve notes written by noted British rock writer John Tobler and bandmember Tom McGuinness detailing the history of the band and the albums. The track listing for "Ready" also contains two bonus tracks recorded live by the band. A superb package and a must for any fan of British blues music. Keith Pettipas, AllMusic

The Blues Band is a British blues band formed in 1979 by Paul Jones, former lead vocalist and harmonica player with Manfred Mann, and vocalist/slide guitarist Dave Kelly, who had previously played with the John Dummer Blues Band, Howlin' Wolf and John Lee Hooker. The band’s first line-up also included bassist Gary Fletcher, guitarist Tom McGuinness (also of Manfred Mann) and drummer Hughie Flint, (the two had previously formed McGuinness Flint). In 1982 Flint left and was replaced by former Family drummer Rob Townsend.

Their first album The Official Blues Band Bootleg Album, a mixture of blues standards and original songs featured the Jones and McGuinness composition "Come On In" and their long-standing stage favourite "Flatfoot Sam". This album initially attracted no interest from major record companies, so the band pressed a limited run of 3,000, hand-stamped their logo on the cardboard sleeve and signed them all. After unqualified endorsement from BBC Radio 1 presenter Simon Bates and others, media interest resulted in a recording contract with Arista Records, who re-released the album under the same title. After that they released Ready, Itchy Feet and Brand Loyalty albums and regularly toured through Europe.

They briefly disbanded after recording a live album Bye Bye Blues (1983), but reformed soon afterwards. In the new millennium they recorded albums such as Stepping Out (2002) and Thank You Brother Ray (2004), which paid tribute to Ray Charles. Now in their thirty seventh year as a band, they still perform across Europe with the same line-up. ~Wikipedia

14. You Can Dance To The Blues (w. Southside Johnny) (3:43)

Hallelujah! Yes, it's a brand new album from one of the UK's best loved and most popular bands. We could say it stars the incomparable singer and harmonic player supreme Paul Jones. We could add it also stars Tom McGuinness on lead guitar. But The Blues Band is really a co-operative with a team of superb musicians on board. And, this time, they are augmented by welcome guest artists adding extra blues power. Among those joining the regulars are singers Linda Lewis and Maggie Bell, the legendary Al Kooper on keyboards, Mike Sanchez and Pete Wingfield on piano, and Southside Johnny on raunchy vocals.

Together they tear through a barnstorming selection of mainly originals numbers, many written by bass man Gary Fletcher and slide guitarist Dave Kelly. There are 14 tracks to enjoy, ranging from Paul Jones "Suddenly I Like It" to Tom's thoughtful "My Brother Was A Sailor" - all about the perils of life at sea. Few Short Lines makes a fine addition to the legacy of a band, whose career now spans more than 30 years. Good to know they are still out on the road, playing the music they love. /Amazon

he Blues Band is a virtual who's who of the British blues scene. ~Keith Pettipas
