In this album, Ivan has written a picture through words and songs of his experiences traveling through local communities in Kimberley over a 20-year period. Charming to say the least. And I will present this footage in the not too distant future for your viewing pleasure. Born in Alexandria, Egypt and migrated to Perth in 1963, Ivan Zar was drawn to the Blues at an early age and taught himself the harmonica and Delta Blues style Guitar. In 1968, he formed his first band "King Biscuit Co", as well as writing his own songs. After playing in several bands, Ivan formed a band called The Elks in 1975, which was to introduce the Chicago style of Blues to the mainstream. The band toured the South West and across to major cities in the Eastern States. They had the opportunity to support B.B King, Rory Gallagher, Joe Cocker and Ike and Tina Turner, and recorded an album Refer to Drawer, which is now a sought after Australian Blues album by blues affeciandos. In 1981, Ivan recorded some of the material that he had written and worked in a duo with Brian Fitzgerald called The Deltatones. They worked in cafe's, folk festivals, small bars and supported John Mayall, Mick Jagger, John Hammond and Leo Kottke. In 1983, they recorded Me and the Devil as well as a cassette Harp of the West, which featured some of WA's most prominent harmonica players. Both of these recordings are also sought after blues fans alike. Going solo again, Ivan had the opportunity to play with such acts as The Black Sorrows, Paul Kelly, Bondi Cigars and Cold Chisel. From 1992-95, he opened The Bindoon Rock Festival and has been a part of Blues at Bridgetown since it's inception in 1993. During this period Ivan was busking in the streets of Northbridge every friday and saturday night - occasionally with other players. He also got the chance to start touring throughout outback WA, playing in pubs, Aboriginal communities, schools and many royal shows. 1995 saw the release of Ivan's first CD Track me Down, for which he received the 'Outstanding Recording Award' at that year's Blues at Bridgetown. In 1996, with John Wilson, he toured Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania. 1998 saw the release of Ivan's second CD Afrika Tide and he again toured the eastern states. While there he had the opportunity to record with some friends from Perth and came up with the next CD Ivan Zar's Deltatones. Back in Perth, a chance meeting in May 2003 with 13-yr-old Ben Witt saw the two working in local pubs and a live recording at the Perth Blues Club in June. They also performed at Bridgetown Blues in 2004 and 2006. Both Ben and Ivan were invited to be part of the West Australian showcase at Goulburn Blues Festival in NSW in 2007.

Born in Eqypt in 1925, the Chief was the first son of a tribal Chief and was raised in the tribal traditions. He moved to America in 1969 and began singing in a place called Momma Leones in New York. After that he moved to Arkansas and ended up getting a job singing with Charlie Rich. He loved singing country music but it was in Dark Hollow, Arkansas where he heard the “Blues” and his destiny was clear. He got a job working as a roadie for Arkansas Larry Davis and Albert King. One night he filled in singing for Albert King , who had laryngitis, and his Blues career was born.

He moved to Tucson in 1981, where he met harmonica player (and producer) Bob Corritore and developed a friendship that has eventually resulted in the recording and release of ‘Snakes Crawls At Night’. The music comes from four sessions of varying musicians in Clarke Rigsby’s Tempe studio in 2001 and 2002.

In 1989 he moved to Phoenix and quickly made friends with local legends, Bob Tate and Dennie Hartnet., who helped him learn about the music business. The Chief has performed at the Monterey Jazz Festival, The Celebrity Theatre and many other venues around the Valley.

He has been a mainstay of the Phoenix blues scene for the past 23 years. A stout, jolly man who calls Voodoo his religion, Chief is a lover of women and he claims to have 7 wives and 17 children.” Ain’t that a man?

The Chief performs ten of his original blues backed by four distinguished electric band ensembles, giving the listener a double treat: not only in the excellent blues of Chief Schabuttie Gilliame and the bands backing him, but also in providing a most interesting exercise in blues redux—what would the great Howlin’ Wolf have sounded like backed by differing blues bands that played other styles than his classic West Side Chicago band sound of guitar, sax and piano?

For this set, Corritore has assembled some of the best musicians on the current blues scene, including heavyweight guitarists like Kid Ramos, Junior Watson, Rusty Zinn, Kirk Eli Fletcher, Louisiana Red, Teddy Morgan, Johnny Rapp and Buddy Reed; the drummers include Richard Innes, Paul Fasulo and Chico Chism; Tom Mahon and Matt Bishop provide piano, whilst Corritore is featured with his own superb harp.

With a line-up like that it would be difficult to fail, but Gilliame more than holds his own in such illustrious company, being the possessor of a gravelly voice, permeated with humour, that was always intended to sing the blues. Gilliame possesses one of those great, deep blues voices that cuts right to the bone. The Chief is known for his wild stage antics and his gargle-with-gasoline-and-rinse-with-asphalt voice.

The music here is tough, vintage blues circa 50’s era Chicago/Southern blues and like the best of that music features excellent ensemble playing from all involved.

Egypt is a UK blues rock three piece band formed in 1987. All three are former members of legendary progressive blues outfit The Groundhogs, featuring in several albums and touring throughout UK and Europe over many years. Alan's credentials also include playing with members of Welsh heavy rock pioneers Budgie in the band Tredegar, two albums for ex-Bo Diddley harp player Billy Boy Arnold, and a European tour for Chuck Berry among other things. Egypt are currently gigging mainly in the UK and Europe.
