Early on, guitarist Teddy Morgan joined the James Harman Band, causing a few hundred barstool critics to put down their Shiner Bocks long enough to check him out. Though barely 19 years old (at the time), Morgan was a pure, blazing, retro, blues star. Harman, it seemed, had pulled yet another rabbit out of his hat. Actually, that "hat" was the vibrant blues scene in Minneapolis, where Morgan joined up with R.J. Mischo.

"Ready To Go!" is a fun blend of Mischo's Little Walter-style harmonica, Strother's all-Chicago vocals (he does killer versions of Muddy Waters' "Forty Days" and Howling Wolf's "Evil") and Morgan's T-Bone Walker-meets-Magic Sam guitar. Be aware that this disc captures Morgan in his full-tilt retro phase. It absolutely smokes!

For a sense of the blues at its most tangible, one needs to look no further than singer/guitarist Percy Strother, who triumphed over incredible tragedy to create music of genuine pain and sorrow. Born July 23, 1946 in Vicksburg, Mississippi, he was still a child when his father died violently; his mother passed away shortly afterward, and rather than submitting to life in an orphanage, Strother simply took to the road. He drifted from job to job for a number of years, all the while fighting a battle with alcoholism; discovering the blues turned his life around, however, and after sobering up he began teaching himself guitar, honing his chops in virtual anonymity before recording his debut LP A Good Woman Is Hard to Find in 1992. The Highway Is My Home followed in 1995, and in 1997 Strother returned with It's My Time. He toured Europe several times and recorded Home at Last there, which saw release in 2001. A legend in his adopted home of Minneapolis, Percy Strother was diagnosed with liver cancer and passed away May 29, 2005. ~Bio by Jason Ankeny

The "Good Woman is Hard to Find" CD has 15 tracks and 50 minutes of soulful blues that I found very easy to listen to. All but 5 of the songs were written by Percy and demonstrate his fine song writing and arranging abilities as well as his superb guitar playing and wonderful voice. I especially liked his soulful If You Don't Love Me When I Want It which reminded me of some of Joe Louis Walker's rhythm and blues styled songs. The CD liner notes quote Lazy Bill Lucas as saying "Mercy, Mr. Percy!" after hearing him sing. I hear hints of Eddie Hinton, Otis Redding, Little Buster Forehand and Muddy Waters in his voice that make it a very appealing listening experience.

Another fine song on the CD, "Somebody Else Is Steppin' In" by Denise LaSalle can also be found on Buddy Guy's 1994 Silvertone release "Slippin' In." Both are mighty fine interpretations -- from the heartfelt singing to the great guitar picking. Two other favorites on the CD are "Made A Good Woman Go Bad" and "Can't Let You Go" which features some stinging lead guitar work. Although Percy doesn't play guitar on all of the CD tracks he does take center stage with his fine guitar playing in his live shows. ~Ray Stiles
