Founder guitarist and songwriter for the 70’s r&b band DR. FEELGOOD, Wilko Johnson’s manic performances and choppy rhythm/lead style became their distinguishing trademark. Four groundbreaking albums, Down By The Jetty, Malpractice, Stupidity (a UK no. 1 chart-topper) and Sneakin’ Suspicion, put Wilko and the Feelgoods firmly on the rock landscape from 1974 to 1977. In that era of turgid progressive and fey glam-rock, their high-energy dirty R&B and be-suited appearance was a mini-revolution, bringing rock’n’roll back to the roots and giving inspiration to both the UK and US fledgling punk scenes.

Splitting from the Feelgoods, Wilko formed the SOLID SENDERS and signed to Virgin for an eponymous album. Then under his own name he released further albums, including Ice On The Motorway, Barbed Wire Blues and Going Back Home, and finding a live audience particularly in Europe and Japan for his frantic, exciting gigs.

Teaming up with IAN DURY & THE BLOCKHEADS for their Laughter album led Wilko to regular guest appearances with them over the years, and the association brought a partnership with Norman Watt-Roy. The much-revered bassist (also known for his sessions with Frankie Goes To Hollywood and The Clash) has been Wilko’s foil for the past eighteen years, providing a solid foundation for Wilko to scatter his wild guitar tricks over. Completing the 3-piece is former Blockheads drummer Monti, who replaced the long-serving Salvatore Ramundo.

Back In The Night, a ‘best of’ Wilko Johnson retrospective from the past 22 years was released in 2002. Now ‘Red Hot Rocking Blues’, the first new studio album since 1998 is released, a collection of Wilko-ised covers of classics by people like Van Morrison, Bob Dylan, Ray Charles, Sonny Boy Williamson, Leadbelly, etc. A Dr. Feelgood live ’75 DVD plus CD is also out on EMI, and now Wilko stars in Julien Temple's engrossing documentary on the Feelgoods, 'Oil City Confidential'.

'Blow Your Mind' is Wilko’s first album of new material in 30 years, and is the sound of a man feeling very much alive. Joining Wilko on the album are his long-standing band; Norman Watt Roy on bass and Dylan Howe on drums along with producer Dave Eringa who worked with them on the gold-selling album 'Going Back Home' with Roger Daltrey. Describing the record as "The album I never thought I’d get to write" it deals with the trials and tribulations that he faced in the last five years, songs such as 'Marijuana' and 'Take It Easy' deal very directly with the terminal diagnosis he was given.

Speaking about the first sets of lyrics that he’d written in three decades Wilko says "It’s tricky when you get to seventy years old, because what am I supposed to be singing? 'I love you, baby, but you done me wrong?' Come on! That’s kind of a problem. But I never thought that I’d be the sort of person to write songs about different sorts of real-life experiences until I got sick".

Anyone expecting that Wilko’s particular brand of R&B to be softened by such heartfelt lyrics is in for a surprise, if anything his guitar style of 'the chop' as he calls it, is even more aggressive. The introspection of some of the tracks on the album is more than balanced out by the good time upbeat party feel of the title track, 'Beauty' and 'I Love The Way You Do' that have the urgency of Wilko’s earliest work with Dr Feelgood. /Amazon

Wilko Johnson & Roger Daltrey - Going Back Home (DeLuxe Edition) (2 CD)

Early in 2013, Wilko Johnson received the news that he had terminal pancreatic cancer and had maybe ten months to live. Instead of whiling away his final days, Johnson set out on a final tour and, finding himself still standing at the end of it, received an invitation from Who singer Roger Daltrey to go into the studio and record an album of whatever songs the guitarist wanted. Wilko had a few new originals, plus the idea to cover Bob Dylan's "Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window," but he mainly stuck to the Dr. Feelgood songbook: the hard R&B and rock & roll songs he wrote and recorded in the '70s that continued to resonate decades later. Supported by his touring band, Johnson entered the studio with Daltrey and knocked out Going Back Home in a week, just like the Feelgoods and the Who did back in the old days.

That twin connection is important, as Going Back Home isn't merely a return to Wilko's roots, it's a homecoming for Daltrey as well, marking the first time in decades that he's sung such tough, blues-based, three-chord rock & roll. It may seem that a generation separates the two rockers - Johnson's first album with Dr. Feelgood, 1975's Down by the Jetty, appeared nearly a decade after the Who's 1965 debut Sing My Generation - but the singer is only four years older than the guitarist, so they share many core American blues and R&B influences, speaking a common language from a different perspective.

Both musicians are notably older than they were back then - Daltrey doesn't bother reaching for the high notes and Johnson's playing isn't as manic as it was during the Feelgoods - but that's what makes Going Back Home special: neither are bothering to hide their age, nor are they desperately attempting to recapture their youth, they're reconnecting to their roots and seizing the present.

Johnson penned the handful of originals not long after receiving his terminal diagnosis, but there isn't a shred of self-pity or sadness here. He's making noise while he still can, and Daltrey matches Wilko's abandon, sounding liberated to be singing songs that aren't racked with Pete Townshend's self-doubt. Roger's lower register is gruff, wearing the scars and weight of his years, while Wilko's guitar slices, pushing and accelerating the beat with alternating precision and recklessness. Digitally remastered edition of this 1988 album from the British guitarist. When Dr. Feelgood burst on the UK scene in 1975 with their energetic R&B, they symbolized a return to the basics and away from the bloated pomposity Rock had become, and paved the way for punk. After four albums, guitarist and songwriter Wilko Johnson left over musical differences, and continued with his own band and his trademark choppy rhythm/lead Blues style.
